Systems-level neuroscience lacks a formal theoretical structure, relying on argumentation based on experimental findings expressed in the primary literature. Theoretical models may typically be represented as summary diagrams in a paper’s discussion. Within a subject as complex and multifaceted as neuroscience, this lack of formalization leads inevitably to problems of information overload for individual researchers as it is a significant challenge to manage and manipulate large volumes of information from a distributed resource such as the literature and scientists’ own individual records. We present ‘NeuroScholar’, a knowledge base desktop application that specifically targets literature- and laboratory-based information, providing a structured knowledge engineering approach for neuroscience. It provides a general object-oriented data model to encapsulate complex data into entities, and a graph-theoretical approach that represents relations between entities edges between nodes in a graph. The system has frameworks for unit testing, plugins (to embed external applications within NeuroScholar), proxies (to export NeuroScholar’s knowledge management capabilities to external applications) and knowledge acquisition based on questionnaires. Specialized plugins include (a) an annotation mechanism for pdf files (built with Multivalent, a third party library), (b) an electronic laboratory notebook component, (c) an annotation mechanism for vector graphics and (d) NeuARt, a neuroanatomical data viewer based on standard atlases which can also use the proxy framework to act as a standalone neuroanatomical data management tool. The knowledge acquisition subsystem provides an easy way to link free-form document annotation with structured knowledge representations for specific types of experiment. We are applying the system directly in two systems-level neuroscience laboratories, one focused on neuroanatomy, the other on neuroendocrinology. It is anticipated that NeuroScholar may provide a platform for theoretical research in neuroscience by delivering knowledge engineering capabilities directly to experimental scientists to facilitate analysis and communication. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. A feasibility study examined the capability of a computer-based system's handling of technical information pertinent to the design of instructional systems. Structured interviews were held to assess the information needs of both researchers and practitioners and an investigation was conducted of 10 computer-based information storage and retrieval systems which could serve as the basis for a technical information system. Question-answering computer systems relying on artificial intelligence concepts were reviewed and considered in terms of providing a prescriptive interactive system. It was concluded that practicable generalized semantic information retrieval systems would require further development. It was further decided that the design and implementation of a natural language automated information retrieval system encompassing the rudimentary features of a prescriptive system was feasible, both in terms of the technical information resources provided and its cost-effectiveness. Lastly, an on-line interactive retrieval system was designed and a model data base of approximately 500 literature-derived comprehensive abstracts was implemented and tested to confirm the feasibility of the system. This document is one of the 5 sections of the Data Element Dictionary developed as part of the WICHE Management Information Systems (MIS) Program. The elements in this section apply to both the current and historical data concerning facilities. The purpose of the WICHE MIS Program is to make it possible to derive data which will be truly comparable for interinstitutional comparisons, while allowing institutional autonomy in such matters as coding and file structure. One of the major purposes of this section of the Dictionary is to obtain longitudinal data depicting changes in characteristics over a period of time. The criteria for inclusion of data elements are: (1) necessary for completion of Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS); (2) likely to be needed for the Student Flow Model, cost exchange procedures, and the Resource Requirements for Prediction Model; (3) necessary to link operational files together for the derivation of information; and (4) basic to institutional record keeping. The categories of facilities-related elements are: facility elements and room elements. To define each element the Dictionary provides: a number, title, description, and comments needed for further clarification. The anticipated utility of each element is indicated. E-learning is a rapidly growing industry with emerging career opportunities that require expertise in business, information technology, and instructional design. However, most academic institutions lack cohesive programs for preparing students for e-learning careers. We argue that information systems (IS) programs have a unique, "blue ocean" opportunity to prepare students for e-learning careers with nominal curricular adjustment. This paper builds on the MSIS 2006 model curriculum to describe an approach for incorporating e-learning as a career track in information systems (IS) graduate programs. An example e-learning curriculum from a large, public university in the western United States is also presented. We believe that an e-learning IS career track can enhance the appeal of the IS major by providing students with access to a multi-billion dollar industry and opening additional employment opportunities as they prepare for a career in business.

We propose a new paradigm for building a Management Information Systems course that focuses on laboratory activities developed collaboratively using Computer-Mediated Communication and Collaboration tools. A highlight of our paradigm is the "practice what you preach" concept where the computer communication tools and collaboration concepts covered in lecture are actually used by both instructors and students to collaborate on labs and projects. Using computer-mediated communication to build a course facilitates stigmergic collaboration where course material is truly the evolving creation of a large group of instructors. Using these communication tools gives instructors additional experience and perspective in teaching computer-mediated communication concepts. Requiring students to use the same communication tools in a course setting gives them collaborative and technical skills to solve problems and communicate solutions to others, while also seamlessly integrating them into the course development process.
