We tend to seek, use, and remember more information in favor of our perspective, belief, or prediction than those against them. This tendency is taken to reflect a confirmation bias, a positive test strategy, or a myside bias. According to the Argumentative Theory of Reasoning, the primary function of reasoning is argumentative, and we reason to justify ourselves, evaluate others, or convince others (Mercier & Sperber, 2011; Mercier et al., 2017). Thus, we should see myside bias—focusing on positive information about our side and negative information about the other side—when producing arguments (Mercier, 2022). Do we also show this bias before producing arguments: when searching for information after selecting a side (the pre-argumentation stage)? In this study, we aim to investigate biases in information seeking across the lifespan depending on 1) the aim of the information search, e.g., seeking information to learn if one made a correct decision versus seeking information to justify one’s decision to someone else, 2) the presence of a conflicting perspective, e.g., whether we are aware that someone made a different prediction than we did.

What institutionally cnaracterizes armies wno successrully navigated through periods of rapid technological, political, and social change? What kinds of leaders were needed? At the risk of addressing a topic that has been analyzed and dissected by historians and military writers for well over 50 years, I submit there is still much we can learn from the German Army. In particular, the interwar German Army, or Reichswehr, was an organization that shared many of the same challenges we do today. Emerging from a major conflict (WWI vs. the Cold War) into an age of breathtaking technological change (the era of mechanization vs. the Information Age), the Reichswehr can provide valuable lessons applicable to the U.S. Army of the 21st Century. Of all the armies to emerge from WWI, it was the German Army that took a systematic, holistic approach to breaking the stalemate of the trenches, first observed in the initial phases of WWII. Initially, the Allies were awed by this new form of warfare that they, not the Germans, dubbed Blitzkrieg, or "Lightening War." In truth, Blitzkrieg was simply the product of an evolutionary process which had its roots firmly set in the traditions of the German Army. Initially, we observe the embryonic stages of Blitzkrieg in the development of Stormtroop Tactics on the Western Front in 1916. Later, building on this wartime experience, General Hans von Seeckt, Chief of the Reichswehr from 1919-1926, established the foundation for combined arms warfare that most conventional armies would eventually adopt by 1944.

This conversation guide is the second companion piece to the Foundation for Child Development's "Getting it Right: Using Implementation Research to Improve Outcomes in Early Care and Education" (ED606115) and "Getting it Right: The Conversation Guide for Preparing the Next Generation of Implementation Researchers" (ED615900) which both provide insights into the value of implementation research in the study of early care and education (ECE). This guide aims to help faculty in institutions of higher education use the "Getting it Right" publication in the preparation of future ECE practitioners -- early educators working directly with children; early education leaders administering programs; and those who support them (e.g., coaches) working in school, center-based, and home-based settings. As a resource, this guide supports higher education faculty to initiate and sustain conversations with students about effective ECE practices and policies, what still needs to be learned, and how to deepen the understanding of young children's development and learning. By understanding and participating in implementation research, practitioners can help shape research agendas in ways that help fill in the existing gaps in knowledge, especially knowledge relevant to instructional practice. The guide can be used when working with senior-level undergraduate students or master's and doctoral graduate students at any point in their degree programs.

Getting it Right from the Start (GIRFTS) is a research study that aims to implement a response to intervention (RTI) framework in early primary school (Foundation and Grade 1) to improve oral language and reading. RTI is a multi-tiered conceptual framework that supports student learning through delivery of high-quality classroom instruction, early identification of students with additional learning needs and early intervention. This research snapshot highlights some real-life examples from the GIRFTS study and outlines strategies schools can use to increase their readiness for change. School staff (teachers and leaders) and implementation support partners (ISPs) provided examples of strategies that increased school readiness for change during focus groups and interviews conducted 12 to 15 months after the GIRFTS project commenced in their school communities. This snapshot focuses on 3 key strategies that school staff and ISPs reported focusing on to increase readiness during the initial stages of implementation of GIRFTS. They are: (1) ensuring buy-in from the school community and external stakeholders; (2) investing in training programs and support systems; and (3) accepting that change takes time, and that readiness for change is dynamic. Getting a student's name right is the first step in welcoming him or her to school. Staff members who work with student-level data also know the importance of accurately and consistently recording a student's name in order to track student data over time, to match files across data sets, and to make meaning from the data. For students whose home language is not English, properly recording their information can be more difficult. School personnel who register students may not be familiar with different naming conventions in languages other than English. For example, Cantonese names usually list the family (or last) name first, followed by the given (or first) name. Typically, Russian male and female last names have different endings, so a brother and sister may use slightly different versions of the same name. Incorrectly entering student names can mean that the same student is listed in different databases in various ways and often with incomplete records. Consequently, students who are eligible for services (e.g., English learner support) can be unidentified or overlooked. This set of naming conventions reference guides can serve as a reference for accurately entering students' names in school, district, and state databases. The guides are currently available for students with home languages of Cantonese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. In addition to facilitating accurate data entry, these guides can help ensure that school and district staff (e.g., front office staff and registrars) address and greet parents and other family members in a culturally responsive and respectful fashion. The naming conventions reference guides provide a general overview of the naming practices in a given language (Cantonese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese). Each guide will help school and district staff become more familiar with what to expect when they encounter students from these cultural backgrounds
