This article examines the interpretive process of social representations of bilingualism by means of discourse and conversational analysis. Representations are to be understood as an interpretive set of assumptions conveyed by discourse, creating recurrent and habitual systems of dispositions and expectations. The article shows how discourse is framed by an argumentative macrostructure, which displays narrative, explicative, and justificative types of discourse. In addition, it is claimed that the use of such types of discourse is generated by and used for interactive purposes. (Author/VWL)

3Women Discrimination In Lynn Nottage’s By The Way, Meet Vera Stark: A Critical Discourse Analysis
The current research paper aims to investigate and reveal the implicit ideologies that are used by Lynn Nottage in her play By the Way, Meet Vera Stark to represent her patriarchal society. The study exhibits critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the representation of women discrimination within Nottag’s play By the Way, Meet Vera Stark. The study delves into the complex construction of American societal stratification, centering on the discursive depiction in the context of women discrimination in the play. The study adopts Reisigl and Wodak’(2001,2009) framework to analyze the collected data qualitatively and quantitatively. The data of this study are four extracts from a different scene of the play to represent women discrimination. The analysis of the data reveals that Nottage criticizes American society for the interplaying between power dynamics, societal status, and the depiction of women exploitation, spotlighting on the multifaceted dimensions of discrimination exemplification within the play. By utilizing all of the discursive strategies, the study concludes that the predicational strategy gets a higher percentage of the total use of the discursive strategies, which indicates the writer’s frequent reliance on predicational strategies to project how characters’ attributes and qualities thereby affecting the depiction of discrimination in the context of the play.

4ERIC ED453209: Going Beneath The Surface: A Discourse-to-Voice-Centered Analysis Of Teaching Philosophies.

In this paper, the author maintains that there are two interrelated levels at which one can analyze data: the political and the psychological. By bringing together the language and concepts of critical theory and relational psychology, the author proposes a method of qualitative data analysis--a discourse-to- voice-centered method--which seeks to embed the psychological concept of voice in the sociopolitical concept of discourse. To illustrate the connections between discourse and voice, the author uses the method to analyze the discursive origins and pedagogical voices of four European American women who have been recognized for their teaching in an open-admissions university serving an ethnically and economically diverse student population. Findings suggest that these women see meaning in their work in part because they have encountered discourse during their graduate work that describes human abilities as malleable and recognizes the social power of individual agency. The paper concludes with recommendations for teacher education programs that want to help preservice educators see value in teaching against the grain. (Contains 14 references.) (Author/SM)

6ERIC EJ1111709: Graduate Students' Construction Of Researcher Identities Explored Through Discourse Analysis

While many research methods courses challenge students to make sense of their own researcher identities as they relate to research paradigms and perspectives, there is a lack of research that examines how students actually go about constructing these identities, particularly at the level of discourse. In this study, we attended to graduate students' talk in an introductory research methods course, taking note of how students used particular discursive resources to construct a research identity in online classroom discussions. We analyzed 93 discussion posts students were asked to make in response to a discussion board prompt after completing assigned readings related to research paradigms and researcher identity. We identified two discursive patterns through our analysis: 1) minimizing knowledge, and 2) justifying paradigmatic orientations. Our findings highlight how being asked to talk about one's research identity is a potentially fragile task, as evidenced by disclaimers of "knowing", and justifications. We highlight implications for teaching research methodology, particularly qualitative methods courses.

Two samples of college student writing, paragraphs from freshman compositions, are analyzed for presence or absence of two characteristics of literate prose, decontextualization and autonomy. Writing is decontextualized and autonomous when whatever is needed for its comprehension is included in the words of the text, and comprehension is not dependent on context or verbal cues, as is often the case with speech. It is argued that the writer's failure to decontextualize is, more specifically, due to violations of the constraints of the organization of given-new information, but that in order to understand this, a new conception of this organization is needed. Two additional discourse organizing principles are identified: (1) all new information must be to some extent given, and the more given information is the more felicitous information; and (2) all discourse constituents are not constrained by equally stringent givenness conditions. Examples are offered and discussed, and these new principles are applied to the texts in question. (MSE)

8The Hindutva Doctrine And Bharatiya Janata Party In 2019 Elections In India: Critical Discourse Analysis

This study is an attempt to understand how the doctrine of Hindutva which considers Hinduchauvinism as the spirit of Indian nationalism has played a central role in the development of populist discourse of Bharatiya Janata Party during the 2019 general elections in India. The BJP has close ideological association with ultra-right-wing Hindu organization the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh which laid foundation of modern-era Hindutva movement, and incidents of persecution and intolerance towards minorities have also increased under rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. Especially the Muslims of India have been tagged as the foreigners by the BJP. This study uses the three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis presented by Norman Fairclough to qualitatively assess the textual and visual discursive texts shared by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its key leaders on Twitter during 2019 election campaign. Additionally, the election speeches of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also been analyzed through development of themes and sub-themes on the basis of the essentials of populism and Hindutva doctrine simultaneously. The mythological and historical basis of Hindutva doctrine, and theoretical debate on populism have also been taken into consideration to find answersto the research questions and it was found that the Hindutva ideology played a central role in the electoral campaign of the BJP and helped it in the construction of the people and the antagonizing others, the identification of a charismatic leader, the portrayal of politically reluctant agenda and the definition of a foreign enemy. It was also found that the BJP excessively used historical and mythological references, symbolism, ritualistic notions and promised Hindutva focused political and constitutional reforms to assert that it was the contemporary political face of the Hindutva doctrine and that it was totally committed to the cause of Hindutva. This study hence demonstrates how the political and public discourse of the world’s largest democracy is being shaped by using ultra right-wing populist discourse as an effective tool of political communication to pave the way for reduced political liberties, undemocratic practices and Hindu chauvinism.

Two studies examined certain aspects of discourse analysis to determine their value in classroom use. The first study explored the relationships among information recalled as assessed by informal reading inventory comprehension questions, unaided retelling, and schema based retelling. Subjects were 15 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students who read two passages each--one at the fourth grade level of readability and the other at their individual grade level. The results showed that using descriptive schema to analyze unprompted retelling bore a reasonable relationship to standard methods of evaluating comprehension. The second study examined the difficulties of first and second language learners in the comprehension of six types of propositions as defined by P. D. Pearson and D. D. Johnson. The study involved 160 seventh grade students, who were divided into groups according to their reading level and by whether they spoke English at home. Results suggested that continued reading assistance should be given to English-as-a-second-language students in order to bring them to the levels of proficiency of their English-speaking peers. (FL)

This study attempted to clarify the concept "program" by systematically examining the use of the term "program." The term was examined as it is used in ordinary language and in adult education literature. After analysis of the term within these two contexts, a typology was developed from the uses identified. The typology was then utilized as an aid in determining those variables affecting the validity of propositions containing the term "program" or concepts referred to in the use of the term. The results indicated that there were five senses of "program," that is, system, plan, document, performance, and planning. The implications that these results have for the adult educator are noted. They are: (1) the term "program" should be explicitly defined if it is to be used as a symbol to communicate a concept within a useful principle; (2) the use of the term "program" should not be abandoned; (3) Hosper's idea of defining and accompanying characteristics can be used as a basis for clarifying other adult education central terms and concepts; and (4) if there is a cause-effect relationship between various senses of "program" then further study is needed of the various things that can go wrong and which mitigate the cause-effect relationship. A study compared functional similarities and differences in the passive in English and Korean, examining several pragmatics theories (given/new information, theme-rheme structure, foregrounding/backgrounding, defocusing, role prominence, emotional function) for their explanations of the functions of the passives. It is concluded that there is a relative similarity in discourse functions of the passive in English and Korean, since the passive can be accounted for best in the two languages by the theory of role prominence. Great difference was found in the emotional function of the passive in the sense that emotional function is much more pervasive in Korean than in English. Implications for learning the passive in English are considered briefly. Contains 18 references. (MSE)

13ERIC EJ939940: Discourse Analysis Of Encouragement In Healthcare Manga

This article examines how healthcare professionals use encouragement. Focusing on GAMBARU ["to try hard"], forty-one scenes were collected from healthcare manga. Each scene of encouragement was analyzed from three perspectives; the contextual background of the communication, the relationship with the patients and the patients' response to the encouragement, and the evaluation of the imposition of face-threatening acts, social distance, and relative power (Politeness Theory). Further analysis was conducted using Leech's (2009) Grand Strategy of Politeness, and each chosen communication event was categorized among ten types of speech acts. The findings suggest some implications to enhance the quality of healthcare communication that offers patients encouragement. (Contains 1 table.)

14ERIC ED562306: Storytelling: Discourse Analysis For Understanding Collective Perceptions Of Medical Education

Using discourse analysis, the goal of this exploratory project was to determine what practitioners of medical education in Sub-Saharan Africa considered key achievements, within the scope of their Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) activities, after their initial two-year implementation efforts. To do so, a series of 58 video stories were analyzed from a 2012 symposium that took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Analysis of the video stories followed an ethnographic method of analysis. Through this analysis common themes emerged from the collective discourse, which unsurprisingly were tied directly to the MEPI themes themselves. The use of discourse analysis helped confirm that the project themes were very much aligned with actual practice. It also enabled a level of transparency of results across all stakeholders. This approach is therefore recommended for informing and supporting future programmatic decisions. [For Full Proceedings, see: ED562127.]

Gender in discourse and feminist ideologies have been more examined in different fields. Regarding the area of Applied Linguistics, there has been more attention to how men and women are represented linguistically, more specifically in feminist studies. The following article examines the chapter “How to charm him with your texts” of a book that provides women with advice on “how to get the man”. I provide a feminist critical discourse analysis (Lazar, 2007) with the support of previous studies on critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2010). This article sheds light on some women categorization made by the author of the book and from a feminist ideology perspective.

This paper examines the ways in which healthcare professionals interact with patients' family members, and/or colleagues. The data are from healthcare discourses at difficult times found in the manga series entitled Nurse AOI. As the first step, we selected several communication scenes for analysis in terms of politeness strategies. From these scenes, we extracted individual events that exhibit any one of five main constraints/maxims that follow Leech's (2009) Grand Strategy Politeness (GSP) framework--generosity/tact, approbation/modesty, obligation, opinion, and feeling. The in-depth analysis was conducted using the following three perspectives: the contextual background of the communication, the relationship with patients' family member and/or colleagues, and the degree of face-threatening acts. This last perspective was evaluated by Politeness Theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987), judging the imposition of face-threatening acts, social distance, and relative power. Each communication event was examined in terms of politeness strategies (Brown and Levinson, 1987; Yoshioka, 2007). At difficult times optimal politeness strategies are required while simultaneously providing urgent medical care for patients or victims. The findings of this study indicate both potential problems with healthcare communication at difficult times such as disasters and also suggest the ways in which the quality of communication may be enhanced.

This study aims at examining the frequency of interpersonal metadiscourse markers in academic written discourse and investigating the way Turkish writers use interpersonal metadiscourse, namely in MA dissertations from one major academic field; English language teaching (ELT). A corpus based research is applied by examining a total of 20 dissertations written recently by Turkish writers writing in a second language. The dissertations were searched for all these expressions and further analysis was made by examining three sections of dissertations-methodology, results, and discussion. In-depth analysis based on the use of interpersonal metadiscourse markers showed that while "hedges", "empathics (boosters)" and "attitude markers" are all used by Turkish writers to a certain extent, "attitude markers" are found to be the most frequent ones. On the other hand, with respect to the use of personal markers, differences were found among the writers. The analysis of dissertation sections revealed common results.

22Critical Discourse Analysis Of Barack Obama's 2012 Speeches: Views From Systemic Functional Linguistics And Rhetoric

In the light of Halliday's Ideational Grammatical Metaphor, Rhetoric and Critical Discourse Analysis, the major objectives of this study are to investigate and analyze Barack Obama's 2012 five speeches, which amount to 19383 words, from the point of frequency and functions of Nominalization, Rhetorical strategies, Passivization and Modality, in which we can grasp the effective and dominant principles and tropes utilized in political discourse. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis frameworks based on a Hallidayan perspective are used to depict the orator’s deft and clever use of these strategies in the speeches which are bound up with his overall political purposes. The results represent that nominalization, parallelism, unification strategies and modality have dominated in his speeches. There are some antithesis, expletive devices as well as passive voices in these texts. Accordingly, in terms of nominalization, some implications are drawn for political writing and reading, for translators and instructors entailed in reading and writing pedagogy.

Representations of Masculinity: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Framing Violence Positively Yusra Qasim Ali Department of English Language, Faculty of Theology, Letters, History and Arts, National University of Sciences and Technology Politehnica, Bucarest, University Centre in Pitești, Romania Abstract Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA henceforth) is applied in this study to examine the representation of masculinity and the positive framing of male violence in social media comments, specifically YouTube comments, in an Eastern society. The study investigates how language is used to normalize and positively justify male violence while consistently shifting blame and putting guilt onto female victims. It also investigates how gendered narratives of masculine culture shape perceptions of violence and victimization. Through an analysis of ten comments, the study identifies two primary patterns: (1) the framing of male violence as justifiable, often by portraying the female victim as responsible or deserving of the violence, and (2) the emotional bias in victim-blaming narratives that position women as responsible for the violence occurred to them. The findings reveal a broader cultural bias in favor of masculinity. The findings are reached by conducting a linguistic analysis and an ideological one in a form of discussion. Those are done adopting: Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional approach, Halliday and Mathiessen’s (1985) Systemic Functional linguistics (SFL), Goffman’s (1974) concept of frame and Entman’s (1993) concept of selection and salience framing. As a typical multimodal discourse, a video can construct its meaning through various modalities, such as image, sound, action, and language. From the perspective of systemic functional grammar, taking the visual grammar of Kress & van Leeuwen as the theoretical framework, this paper analyzes the multimodal video “Union Is Strength” from the representational meaning, interactional meaning and compositional meaning, and discusses the meaning construction of the multimodality such as image and speech. The study has found that the video constructs union is strength in a variety of narrative ways, and union can realize the theme significance of the weak winning over the strong.

27Discourse Analysis Of Multilingual In-door Advertisements Of Dili, Timor Leste

This article presents a study on multilingual in-door advertisements in Dili Timor Leste (TL). The multilingual in-door advertisements were collected by photographing them for the data. They were also collected from written documents and internet. The data were in language but in syllables of advertisements. The 402 multilingual syllables were used as data samples. It was found that most of the advertisements obtained used words of four different languages: Tetun, Portuguese, English, and Indonesian in advertisements. By applying discourse analysis model of Norman Fairclough to analyse the data, the study reports the following results: (1) Most of the multilingual in-door advertisements have completed the instruction of TL constitution that Tetun is used as national language; (2) Most of the advertisement texts produced, distributed and consumed are regarded as segements of four languages mentioned above; (3) The advertisement text messages show socio-cultural meanings regarded as text backgrounds. The theoretical implication of the study is that, the discourse analysis model of Norman Fairclough is not so precise to analyse texts without certain contexts. However, this research contributes much to TL government to design a regulation or other guides for processing bussiness advertisements in TL.

The present study investigates longitudinal trends in emotional tone and measures of foresight (positive vs. negative anticipation, anticipation vs. fear) in artificial intelligence (AI)- related discourse from 2018 to 2024, with a particular focus on the public response to the releases of GPT-1, GPT-3, and Chat-GPT. Using a natural language processing (NLP) approach and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC)-based linguistic analysis, this research examines overall shifts in sentiment over time and the impact of major GPT model releases. Additionally, the study explores the moderating effect of political orientation on sentiment changes. Data are collected from TDM Studio (ProQuest), which provides access to major news media articles with established political bias ratings. A linear mixed-effects modeling approach (lme4) is applied to test hypotheses concerning long-term sentiment trends, event-driven shifts, and ideological differences in response patterns. Results are expected to indicate significant sentiment changes surrounding GPT release events, with Chat-GPT producing the most pronounced effects. We also explore moderating effects of political leanings of media. These findings will contribute to the broader understanding of public perception of AI advancements and the role of political ideology in shaping discourse on emerging technologies. Part of a more extended study, a study used discourse analysis to examine how instructors and students talk about sexist language in an attempt to discover their implicit language theories. Subjects, six instructors and six undergraduate students chosen from a convenience sample at a large western university, were interviewed and asked to comment on their own particular view of nonsexist language and the educator's role in the classroom. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Results indicated that many respondents provided comments that were consistent with the referential view of language. They stated that language is unimportant, a habit, and a reflection of society. However, some respondents looked at language as more of a system and provided responses consistent with both the objective systemic and subjective systemic view. The two implicit language theories that the student and instructor discourse seemed to center around were language as a system of signs that people create and use, and language as a system of signs, but as a constantly changing and evolving system that has the power to create, shape, or blemish. 39ERIC ED466542: A Discourse Analysis Of Student Perceptions Of Their Communication Competence.

This paper presents the conclusions of a study of student perceptions of communication competence. Discourse analysis data was collected on students in university systems in six different American states in the East, Midwest, and South. Student discourse was analyzed for differences in the ways in which students described their perceptions of their communication competence. Three dimensions differentiated students in all regional samples: negativity/positivity; physicality/intellectuality; and social bonding/social alienation. Hypotheses regarding relationships between student discourse on the three dimensions were tested. Statistical support was found for associations between negative evaluations of perceived communication competence and conceptualizations of communication competence as a primarily physical activity. Statistical support was also found for associations between negative associations of perceived communication competence and descriptions of social alienation. (Contains 21 references.) (Author/RS)

The career preparedness component of British Columbia's Career and Personal Planning (CAPP) curriculum commits two fundamental category mistakes in its classification of employability skills, both with potentially serious consequences for education. The first type of category mistake is incorrectly conflating distinct categories of concepts under the general rubric of generic skills and, thereby, disregarding the contextual understanding, background knowledge, and epistemic attitudes required to achieve certain desired cognitive competencies. Concepts describing mental process such as understanding, problem solving, and critical thinking are applied in the same logical fashion as those denoting physical operations. Their evaluation in the prescribed fashion presents insurmountable difficulties for teachers since mental process concepts are inseparable from the context in which they are used. CAPP makes available no pedagogical approaches that include a context for and adequate background knowledge of the problem to be solved; adequate content knowledge of the subject being communicated and the context in which the communicative act occurs; or facts relevant to the matter being critiqued. The second type of category mistake committed by CAPP is including values and attitudes under the rubric of generic employability skills and, in so doing, obscuring important ethical distinctions between the contentious area of values education and basic skills instruction. 50Exploring Substance Discourse: An Analysis Of Reddit Posts Across Substance Types, Canadian Cities, And Political Standings

Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) have developed into a global epidemic, creating a significant burden worldwide. The SUD crisis persists due to limited awareness, treatment accessibility misconceptions, stigmatization, and prejudice against individuals who use substances, particularly if they are diagnosed with SUD. Public attitudes and stigmatizing beliefs towards individuals with mental health and SUDs are shaped by the language utilized to label individuals with these disorders. As such, emerging movements from people with lived/living experience (PWLLE) suggest changing the language we use to speak about individuals who use substances, e.g., person-first versus identity-first language. While the conceptual lens of stigma has been developed through research, the symbolic forms of stigma, such as language, are not as often updated. Given that stigma is recognized as a social and cultural process that is continuously evolving to reflect changes in substance use patterns, the lexicon used to determine stigmatizing language may shift with changes in preferred substances and substance use patterns. As such, the aim of this study is to provide an updated list of current stigmatizing terms used to describe substance use or those who use substances, obtained from conversations about substance use on Reddit. In addition, we would like to see how stigmatizing language changes across substance types, major cities in Canada, and their affiliated political parties.
