6Individual And Community Level Risk-Factors For Alcohol Use Disorder Among Conflict-Affected Persons In Georgia.
By Roberts, Bayard, Murphy, Adrianna, Chikovani, Ivdity, Makhashvili, Nino, Patel, Vikram and McKee, Martin
This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Background: The evidence on alcohol use disorder among conflict-affected civilian populations remains extremely weak, despite a number of potential risk-factors. The aim of this study is to examine patterns of alcohol use disorder among conflict-affected persons in the Republic of Georgia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 3600 randomly selected internally displaced persons (IDPs) and former IDPs. Two alcohol use disorder outcomes were measured: (i) having at least hazardous alcohol use (AUDIT score ≥8); (ii) episodic heavy drinking (consuming >60 grams of pure alcohol per drinking session at least once a week). Individual level demographic and socio-economic characteristics were also recorded, including mental disorders. Community level alcohol environment characteristics relating to alcohol availability, marketing and pricing were recorded in the respondents' communities and a factor analysis conducted to produce a summary alcohol environment factor score. Logistic regression analyses examined associations between individual and community level factors with the alcohol use disorder outcomes (among men only). Results: Of the total sample, 71% of men and 16% of women were current drinkers. Of the current drinkers (N = 1386), 28% of men and 1% of women were classified as having at least hazardous alcohol use; and 12% of men and 2% of women as episodic heavy drinkers. Individual characteristics significantly associated with both outcomes were age and experiencing a serious injury, while cumulative trauma events and depression were also associated with having at least hazardous alcohol use. For the community level analysis, a one unit increase in the alcohol environment factor was associated with a 1.27 fold increase in episodic heavy drinking among men (no significant association with hazardous alcohol use). Conclusion: The findings suggest potential synergies for treatment responses for alcohol use disorder and depression among conflict-affected populations in Georgia, as well as the need for stronger alcohol control policies in Georgia.

14Conflict Is Not Abuse : Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, And The Duty Of Repair
By Schulman, Sarah, 1958- author
There were a lot of expectations for a stable world at the end of the cold war. while this is generally true, Africa has experienced more devastating conflicts in the post cold war era. Past efforts to conclusively end these conflicts have proved futile. This paper will give a brief background of the external intervention's influence on the continent's evolution. It will discuss in detail the common causes of the conflicts, highlight the roles of external players, the challenges and roles of the international community, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the sub-regional organizations in their resolution.

18ERIC ED219222: Coping With Conflict: Strategies For Extension Community Development And Public Policy Professionals.
By ERIC
Particularly in the area of community resource development and public issues, Extension personnel in recent years have had to deal with an increasing amount of conflict as professional educators. Extension workers with limited training in conflict management have had to cope with situations usually involving the nature of the problems, the data and information available, establishment of goals, alternative policies for goal achievement, allocation of scarce resources, and vested interests of individuals, informal groups, organizations, and communities. As a follow-up to a 1977 North Central Region Staff Development Workshop on Coping with Conflict, it was decided to develop a resource publication for staff development which would contain the major workshop presentations regarding social conflict. These papers relate to (1) social conflict in community resource development and public policy education, (2) the nature of social conflict and how it operates, (3) understanding conflict strategies and developing skills to deal with it, (4) managing stress in conflict situations, (5) coping with conflict among organizations, and (6) the role of the educator's values in conflict intervention. A final section presents an annotated bibliography of selected resources for dealing with social conflict. (BRR)

22ERIC ED071927: Community Status And Conflict In Suburban School Politics.
By ERIC
Research reported here focuses on the effects of community status upon citizen participation and conflict in school politics. One objective was to test Minar's studies which showed higher levels of participation in lower status districts due to the differential possession by higher and lower status school districts of resources of conflict management skills in their respective populaces. A second objective was to investigate factors which operate to minimize and/or contribute to conflict. A sample of eight districts were selected. The theoretical framework drew upon Minar's work, employed Easton's model of the political processes, and investigated Gamson's study of the structural effects upon the incidence and intensity of conflict. Key findings show that: 1) the overall conflict ranking proved to be highly correlated with the referendum dissent ranking; 2) the rankings on the structural variables proved to be unreliable predictors of overall conflict; 3) leadership by the school authorities and political culture of the blue and white collar districts accounted for most of the variation in conflict levels. The present study shows that low conflict, and vice versa, is due both to differences in cultural ethos and to the level of management resources. An obvious implication of the findings is that school authorities might find training designed to raise their "political consciousness" useful. (Author/SJM)

27ERIC ED056407: School Desegregation And Community Conflict. School Desegregation Bulletin Series.
By ERIC
This report examines the varying degrees of controversy and conflict experienced by two cities when they attempted to desegregate their public schools. Using these experiences as examples, the report shows how education boards can implement desegregation plans to avoid community controversy. The author stresses that issues basic to avoiding conflict are that (1) an administrator know the kinds of questions to ask, and that (2) he be aware of the way in which controversy is likely to develop given the uniqueness of his situation. 28ERIC ED491649: Conflict, Development And Community Participation In Education: Pakistan And Yemen
By ERIC
In development policy, community participation has increasingly come to be seen as a way to encourage community interest, involvement, ownership and ultimately, sustainability of projects. Education has also been affected by this discourse. The following paper examines two countries affected by conflict (Pakistan and Yemen), asking what type of community participation is possible in areas with complex conflict situations, since "community participation" demands some form of "democracy." The conflict scenario and the locus of control and power in these countries is examined in two rural areas. Finally, the paper questions what type and degree of community participation is possible in education and whether it can become a catalyst for peace, or an indirect mechanism for power elites to control decision-making. (Contains 28 footnotes.)

29ERIC ED404426: Conflict Resolution Education. A Guide To Implementing Programs In Schools, Youth-Serving Organizations, And Community And Juvenile Justice Settings. Program Report.
By ERIC
This guide was developed for educators, juvenile justice practitioners, and others in youth-serving organizations to increase awareness of conflict resolution education and its potential for the peaceful settlement of disputes. Conflict resolution programs can help schools promote both the individual behavior changes necessary for responsible citizenship and the systemic change necessary for a safe learning environment. The guide is designed to provide sufficient information and tools to initiate the development of comprehensive youth-centered conflict resolution programs. Chapter 1, "Understanding Conflict Resolution," defines conflict as a natural condition and presents the essential principles of conflict resolution. Each of the next four chapters discusses one of the following approaches to conflict resolution: (1) the process curriculum approach; (2) the mediation program approach (peer or other mediation); (3) the peaceable classroom approach; and (4) the peaceable school approach, a comprehensive whole-school approach. The next two chapters address conflict resolution in juvenile justice settings and in parent and community initiatives. The final three chapters consider research on conflict resolution, developmentally appropriate practices, and conflict resolution program development and implementation. Nine appendixes offer a variety of resources for establishing conflict resolution education programs, including lists for further reading, a glossary, sample forms, and a strategic program plan. 30ERIC ED397021: Conflict And Collegiality: A Dialectic Of Community-Building In An Interdisciplinary Teaching Team's First Year.
By ERIC
This paper is based on a reexamination of data from implementation in 1993-94 of the "Connections" program, a voluntary interdisciplinary program option for ninth-grade students in Cedar City (Ohio). Data gathered from the four teachers (representing English, Physical Science, World History, and Learning Disabilities) and 80 students (including 10 with learning disabilities) included observations of classes and meetings, teacher interviews, and implementation documents. Anecdotes of triumphs and crises the teachers experienced are shared, as are details of the evolving interpersonal and interprofessional dynamics between teachers attempting to transcend their traditional curricular isolation. The experiences of the Connections teachers are compared with existing literature on what can be done to facilitate such team bonding and cooperation, including how conflict can be used to highlight important issues that might otherwise go unaddressed. 31ERIC ED105028: Conflict, Adaptive Community Organization, And Educational Participation.
By ERIC
The purpose of this paper is to report on part of a research study designed to learn about the interrelationships of racial conflict, change in the institutionalization of social power within an educational system, and adaptive organization of the black community within Newark, New Jersey between 1958 and 1972. The central fact informing the participation of the black community in educational affairs of Newark is that power is institutionalized, as are the rules which govern and influence the educational system. The significant question then becomes how did the black community, between 1958 and 1972, organize to deal with this fact, and with what success. The approach adopted here features an orientation toward black group survival, and successful adaptation with scarce resources, within a particular situational context. The emergent organizational structure and the strategic designs for inducing social change created by the black community, while coping with the pattern of environmental stress of particular situational conditions and forces, are the dominant orientations of this approach. The consequences of black participation in a particular sphere of public policy determination, and the processes and structures contributing to such consequences, were the focus of this work. 33ERIC EJ1093028: Violence, Conflict, And Community Service-Learning: Measuring Impact On Students And Community
By ERIC
University students were involved in the design, implementation, and assessment of a program in local schools on conflict and violence in the media and in one's own life. The community partners were sixth graders in five area classrooms in the community surrounding the university. This study assesses the impact of a project-based community service-learning (CSL) partnership on both the university students involved and the sixth graders for whom the project was designed. The data suggest that both the sixth graders/community members and the university students learned valuable information and developed critical thinking skills from participation in the project. The analysis of the data gives us important insights into the ways such work can and does make an impact on all parties involved.

38Association Between Exposure To Traumatic Events And Anxiety Disorders In A Post-conflict Setting: A Cross-sectional Community Study In South Sudan.
By Ayazi, Touraj, Lien, Lars, Eide, Arne, Swartz, Leslie and Hauff, Edvard
This article is from BMC Psychiatry , volume 14 . Abstract Background: The negative effect of exposure to traumatic events on mental health is well known. Most studies of the effects of trauma on mental health in war-affected populations have focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Although some studies confirm the existence of anxiety symptoms in war-affected populations, the extent to which exposure to traumatic events is independently associated with anxiety diagnoses (other than PTSD) has received less attention. The study aimed to determine whether having an anxiety diagnosis, other than PTSD, was associated with experiencing traumatic events in a post-conflict setting, across genders and after controlling for demographic and socio-economic variables. Methods: In this cross-sectional community study (n = 1200), we applied the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ) to investigate the extent of trauma exposure and PTSD. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) was used to investigate the prevalence of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and agoraphobia. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between these disorders, previous trauma exposure, and socio-economic factors. Results: The participants were 56.4% male and 43.6% female. The age ranged between 18 and 73 years old (Mean 34.63, SD = 12.03). The estimated rates of GAD-only and PD-only (without comorbidity with PTSD) were 5.5% and 3.1%, respectively. Exposure to traumatic events and socio-economic disadvantage were significantly associated with having one or more anxiety diagnoses. After controlling for age, sex, rural/urban setting, and socio-economic disadvantage, exposure to trauma was independently associated with anxiety diagnosis. There were gender differences in the pattern of risk factors for having PTSD, GAD or PD. Conclusion: In individuals with a history of war-related trauma exposure, attention should be given to symptoms of GAD and PD, in addition to PTSD symptoms.

47Encounter Lesson 6 - Courage, Community, And Conflict: A Recipe For Deliverance
In his early years, Moses tried to do Godâs will in his flesh and on his own. His impulsive actions revealed the need for a humbling process. Through the desert experience, he learned the value of community and when the time came for him to move out in obedience, he was humble enough to receive counsel and support from the people that God assembled around him. His father-in-law provided blessing, encouragement, and counsel. His wife sacrificed to make his obedience possible. His brother served alongside him to supply what was lacking in gifts and credibility. This support was important because Moses would soon realize that obedience to God is an engagement in spiritual warfare. In the same way, God leads us to a community of faith, through which we gain courage, to engage in the spiritual battles necessary to walk in freedom and influence others toward Godâs purposes.

49ERIC ED153293: Relational Conflict Between Members Of Teacher's Unions And Community Members As A Result Of Collective Action: Isolation And Resolution.
By ERIC
An identity identification model may be used to isolate and understand the conflicts in communication that teacher's unions experience with the surrounding community when they strike. A union's identity is those attitudes held in common by the members; its identification is the attitudes toward it held by those in the surrounding community. During a strike, the previous patterns of identity identification are disrupted; community members who saw the teachers as neighbors jointly engaged in educating their children may now see them as unreasonable and greedy. After a strike, teachers may view themselves as no longer in servitude, while community members may view them with less respect for being "unprofessional." These identity identification discrepancies can be resolved if teachers' unions enact the following three suggestions: increase visibility in the community on an on-going basis so that the union is not heard of only during strikes; make more contacts with leaders of other community groups, turning their potential resistance into advocacy; and convey a clear, consistent, and factual message to the community.
