This paper describes a communication test, which successfully demonstrated the transfer of losslessly compressed images in an end-to-end system. These compressed images were first formatted into variable length Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) packets in the Advanced Orbiting System Testbed (AOST). The CCSDS data Structures were transferred from the AOST to the Radio Frequency Simulations Operations Center (RFSOC), via a fiber optic link, where data was then transmitted through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The received data acquired at the White Sands Complex (WSC) was transferred back to the AOST where the data was captured and decompressed back to the original images. This paper describes the compression algorithm, the AOST configuration, key flight components, data formats, and the communication link characteristics and test results.

This paper considers the analysis and design of resilient/robust decentralized control systems. Specifically, we aim to assess how the pairing of sensors and actuators lead to architectures that are resilient to attacks/hacks for industrial control systems and other complex cyber-physical systems. We consider inherent structural properties such as internal fixed modes of a dynamical system depending on actuation, sensing, and interconnection/communication structure for linear discrete time-invariant dynamical systems. We introduce the notion of resilient fixed-modes free system that ensures the non-existence of fixed modes when the actuation-sensing-communication structure is compromised due to attacks by a malicious agent on actuators, sensors, or communication components and natural failures. Also, we provide a graph-theoretical characterization for the resilient structurally fixed modes that enables to capture the non-existence of resilient fixed modes for almost all possible systems' realizations. Additionally, we address the minimum actuation-sensing-communication co-design ensuring the non-existence of resiliently structurally fixed modes, which we show to be NP-hard. Notwithstanding, we identify conditions that are often satisfied in engineering settings and under which the co-design problem is solvable in polynomial-time complexity. Furthermore, we leverage the structural insights and properties to provide a convex optimization method to design the gain for a parametrized system and satisfying the sparsity of a given information pattern. Thus, exploring the interplay between structural and non-structural systems to ensure their resilience. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a power grid example.

A study was conducted to determine whether there is a significant correlation between the scores obtained on a communication functional dominance instrument and those obtained from an instrument of the Ohio State Leadership Scales. Subjects, 102 freshman speech students, completed the Human Communication Functional Dominance instrument, which measures linking (social) and regulation (verbal control of others) functions of leadership behavior. They also completed the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (from the Ohio State Leadership Scales), which measures the consideration (mutual trust) and initiating structure (directing subordinates) dimensions of leadership. It was hypothesized that subjects scoring high in one or the other of the functional dominance characteristics would also score high on the parallel function of the leadership behavior questionnaire. The total number of linking and regulation responses was recorded from the functional dominance instrument and the number of initiating and consideration responses was recorded from the leadership behavior questionnaire. The subjects were then rank ordered on the four characteristics. The correlation coefficients found between the variables were extremely low and did not support the hypothesis. Candidate data communication techniques are identified, including dedicated links, local buses, broadcast buses, multiplex buses, and mesh networks. The design methodology for mesh networks is then discussed, including network topology and node architecture. Several concepts of power distribution are reviewed, including current limiting and mesh networks for power. The technology issues of packaging, transmission media, and lightning are addressed, and, finally, the analysis tools developed to aid in the communication design process are described. There are special tools to analyze the reliability and connectivity of networks and more general reliability analysis tools for all types of systems.

The application of communication structures to advanced transport aircraft are addressed. First, a set of avionic functional requirements is established, and a baseline set of avionics equipment is defined that will meet the requirements. Three alternative configurations for this equipment are then identified that represent the evolution toward more dispersed systems. Candidate communication structures are proposed for each system configuration, and these are compared using trade off analyses; these analyses emphasize reliability but also address complexity. Multiplex buses are recognized as the likely near term choice with mesh networks being desirable for advanced, highly dispersed systems.

A new class of ionospheric irregularities in the auroral oval associated with large structured plasma flows has been recently isolated with radar and satellite in-situ measurements. These density irregularities have large power spectral densities (psd) at short scale lengths (approx. hundreds to tens of meters). The paper characterizes the density and velocity spectra in such regions and discusses their impact on scintillation observations and radar performance. The structured plasma flows may occur in association with large (approx. 10 micro A per sq m) or small (approx. 1 micro A per sq m) field aligned currents. The velocity spectra have fairly shallow power spectral indices (approx. -1.5) in regions of large field aligned currents and are steep (approx. -3) in regions of small current flows. The density spectra, on the other hand, can be described by a power law index approx. -2 in both the large and small field aligned current regions. The temporal structure of scintillations will thus be dictated not only by the scattering strength but also by the large flow velocities encountered in the auroral oval. The density structures with large psd at short scale lengths are expected to introduce considerable ionospheric clutter in HF radar systems. The effect of E-region conductivity in modifying small-scale (1 km) F-region structure and its implication for communication and radar systems is discussed. (rh)

This project is to develop antennas which enable beyond line of sight (BLOS) command and control for UAVs. We will take advantage of newly assigned provisional Ku-band spectrum for UAVs and use unique antenna designs to avoid interference with ground systems. This will involve designing antennas with high isotropic effective radiated power (EIRP) and ultra-low sidelobes. The antennas will be made with polymer aerogel as a substrate to both reduce weight and improve performance, as demonstrated in an Aero Seedling. In addition, designing the antennas to be conformal to the aircraft fuselage will reduce drag.

The U.S. government technical report is a primary means by which the results of federally funded research and development (R&D) are transferred to the U.S. aerospace industry. However, little is known about this information product in terms of its actual use, importance, and value in the transfer of federally funded R&D. To help establish a body of knowledge, the U.S. government technical report is being investigated as part of the NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. In this report, we summarize the literature on technical reports and provide a model that depicts the transfer of federally funded aerospace R&D via the U.S. government technical report. We present results from our investigation of aerospace knowledge diffusion vis-a-vis the U.S. government technical report, and present the results of research that investigated aerospace knowledge diffusion vis-a-vis the technical communication practices of U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists who were members of either the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society for Testing and Materials, or the Society for the Advancement of Material & Process Engineering.

The purpose of the paper is trying to summarize the international conference "Noetics versus Computer Science: the New Structures of the Scientific Communication", held in Rome 19 to 20 November 2013. In the light of the epistemic conflict, as set out in the title, I tried to highlight the main conceptual issues emerged during the four working sessions, that suggest a careful reconsideration of the role of bibliography, library services and the traditional paradigms of information organization, especially in light of the latest trends related to the development of the semantic web, discovery tools, social networks, open access and digital libraries. The emphasis is particularly on those contributions that have activated critical thinking about the current state and prospects of digital knowledge ecosystem, considering that it seems essential to adopt semantic ontologies, cognitive maps and indexical infrastructures that are able to explode the epistemological potential of the recorded knowledge.

This study analyzed the textbooks titled "Arabic for Non-native Speaking Children", Level I by Zakirov, Mingazova, and Mukhametzyanov (2011), and "Arabic for Non-Native Speaking Children", Level II by Mingazova, Zakirov, and Mukhametzyanov (2013) which are used to teach Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) to elementary school children in Tatarstan. The textbooks were then evaluated in the light of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) criteria. Results showed that the textbooks do not meet the CEFR language teaching and learning criteria, as they focus on the reading and writing skills, not oral skills and communication. They focus on the Arabic alphabet letters and basic Arabic grammatical structures and categories. The words taught are selected based on whether they contain the alphabet letter under study, not on the basis of belonging to a certain semantic category. In addition, the textbooks have adopted a grammar-translation approach, not a communicative, functional approach. The study recommends restructuring the textbook aims, skills and subskills taught, language elements selected, syllabus design adopted, and language teaching approach followed so that focus is on learning Arabic for communication. The whole Arabic lesson should be conducted in Arabic (L2). The students should practice oral skills before they move on to reading and writing sentences and paragraphs. The form and meaning of the words and grammatical patterns should be taught together using real objects, drawings, gestures and dramatization. The textbooks should adopt a functional situational syllabus design and follow a communicative language teaching approach. [This paper was published in: "Proceedings IFTE-2020" (pp. 101-129). This paper presents how information organizational structures with point-to-point communication structure impact team coordination in a distributed task-asset allocation problem. A key distinguishing characteristic of this problem is that each DM knows only a part of the weight matrix and/or controls a subset of the assets. Here, we extend the distributed algorithm developed for blackboard communication structure in [11] to the point-to-point communication structure. Our results indicate that edge organizations with horizontal and vertical information structures exhibit shorter delays than block diagonal and checkerboard information structures.

Echolocating bats produce very diverse vocal signals for echolocation and social communication that span an impressive frequency range of 1 to 120 kHz or 7 octaves. This tremendous vocal range is unparalleled in mammalian sound production and thought to be produced by specialized laryngeal vocal membranes on top of vocal folds. However, their function in vocal production remains untested. By filming vocal membranes in excised bat larynges ( Myotis daubentonii ) in vitro with ultra-high-speed video (up to 250,000 fps) and using deep learning networks to extract their motion, we provide the first direct observations that vocal membranes exhibit flow-induced self-sustained vibrations to produce 10 to 95 kHz echolocation and social communication calls in bats. The vocal membranes achieve the highest fundamental frequencies ( f o ’s ) of any mammal, but their vocal range is with 3 to 4 octaves comparable to most mammals. We evaluate the currently outstanding hypotheses for vocal membrane function and propose that most laryngeal adaptations in echolocating bats result from selection for producing high-frequency, rapid echolocation calls to catch fast-moving prey. Furthermore, we show that bats extend their lower vocal range by recruiting their ventricular folds—as in death metal growls—that vibrate at distinctly lower frequencies of 1 to 5 kHz for producing agonistic social calls. The different selection pressures for echolocation and social communication facilitated the evolution of separate laryngeal structures that together vastly expanded the vocal range in bats.

A study examined the power of communication apprehension, person perception, network connectedness, and course satisfaction to predict learning outcomes in a college communication course. Subjects, 81 students from a multisection course, completed a variety of self-report instruments measuring their communication apprehension levels; perceptions of teacher attraction, character, sociability, extroversion, competence, and composure; satisfaction with the course; and perceptions of class social structure. In addition, the students' final grades in the course were recorded. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that approximately 60% of the variance in learning outcomes was accounted for by the interaction of psychological and social structures. (FL)

Communication, the flow of ideas and information between individuals in a social context, is the heart of educational experience. Constructivism and constructivist theories form the foundation for the collaborative learning processes of creating and sharing meaning in online educational contexts. The Learning and Collaboration in Technology-enhanced Contexts (LeCoTec) course comprised of 66 participants drawn from four European universities (Oulu, Turku, Ghent and Ramon Llull). These participants were split into 15 groups with the express aim of learning about computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). The Community of Inquiry model (social, cognitive and teaching presences) provided the content and tools for learning and researching the collaborative interactions in this environment. The sampled comments from the collaborative phase were collected and analyzed at chain-level and group-level, with the aim of identifying the various message types that sustained high learning outcomes. Furthermore, the Social Network Analysis helped to view the density of whole group interactions, as well as the popular and active members within the highly collaborating groups. It was observed that long chains occur in groups having high quality outcomes. These chains were also characterized by Social, Interactivity, Administrative and Content comment-types. In addition, high outcomes were realized from the high interactive cases and high-density groups. In low interactive groups, commenting patterned around the one or two central group members. In conclusion, future online environments should support high-order learning and develop greater metacognition and self-regulation. Moreover, such an environment, with a wide variety of problem solving tools, would enhance interactivity.

Studies of natural dialogue indicate that people interact according to established patterns which are organized around the participants' goals. These patterns have been represented by a set of knowledge structures called "Dialogue-games" which are founded on conventional knowledge about communication and its uses to achieve goals. The "Components" are the expected sequence of intermediate states that occur during an instance of a particular conventional pattern. We give a purely logical account of a process algebra operation which strictly includes the behavior of restriction on actions we find in Milner CCS. This is possible inside a logical system in the Calculus of Structures of Deep Inference endowed with a self-dual quantifier. Using proof-search of cut-free proofs of such a logical system we show how to solve reachability problems in a process algebra that subsumes a significant fragment of Milner CCS.

Studies of naturally occurring human dialogue have led to the recognition of a new class of regularities which characterize important aspects of communication. People appear to interact regularly according to established patterns which span several turns in a dialogue and which recur frequently. These patterns appear to be organized around the goals which the dialogue serves for each participant. Many things which are said later in a dialogue can only be interpreted as pursuit of goals established earlier in the dialogue by goal- setting parts of these patterns. These patterns have been represented by a set of knowledge structures called Dialogue-games, capturing shared conventional knowledge that people have about communication and how it can be used to achieve goals. A Dialogue-game has Parameters, which represent those elements that vary across instances of a particular pattern. The Parameters identify the particular dialogue participants and the content topic. The states of the world which must be in effect for a particular Dialogue-game to be employed successfully are represented by specifications of these Parameters. Finally, the expected sequence of intermediate states that occur during instances of a particular conventional pattern are represented by the Components of the Dialogue-game. This report describes a representation for several Dialogue-games, based on our analyses of different kinds of naturally occurring dialogue. A process model is described, showing Dialogue-game identification, pursuit, and termination as part of the comprehension of dialogue utterances. This Dialogue-game Model captures some of the important functional aspects of language, especially indirect uses to achieve implicit communication.

The U.S. government technical report is a primary means by which the results of federally funded research and development (R&D) are transferred to the U.S. aerospace industry. However, little is known about this information product in terms of its actual use, importance, and value in the transfer of federally funded R&D. Little is also known about the intermediary-based system that is used to transfer the results of federally funded R&D to the U.S. aerospace industry. To help establish a body of knowledge, the U.S. government technical report is being investigated as part of the NASA/DoD Aerospace Knowledge Definition Research Project. In this report, we summarize the literature on technical reports, present a model that depicts the transfer of federally funded aerospace R&D via the U.S. government technical report, and present the results of research that investigated aerospace knowledge diffusion vis-a-vis the technical communication practices of U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists who were members of either the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society Testing and Materials, or the Society for the Advancement of Materials & Process Engineering.

This paper discusses an ongoing study that uses a recent development in communication control technology to implement hybrid hypercube structures. These architectures are similar to binary hypercubes, but they also provide added connectivity between the processors. This added connectivity increases communication reliability while decreasing the latency of interprocessor message passing. Because these factors directly determine the speed that can be obtained by multiprocessor systems, these architectures are attractive for applications such as remote exploration and experimentation, where high performance and ultrareliability are required. This paper describes and enumerates these architectures and discusses how they can be implemented with a modified version of the hyperswitch communication network (HCN). The HCN is analyzed because it has three attractive features that enable these architectures to be effective: speed, fault tolerance, and the ability to pass multiple messages simultaneously through the same hyperswitch controller.

Captain John Smith (c. January 1580 – June 21, 1631) Admiral of New England was an English soldier, explorer, and author. He was knighted for his services to Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania. He is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with the Virginia Indian girl Pocahontas during an altercation with the Powhatan Confederacy and her father, Chief Powhatan. He was a leader of the Virginia Colony (based at Jamestown) between September 1608 and August 1609, and led an exploration along the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay.<br /><br />His books and maps may have been as important as his deeds, as they encouraged more Englishmen and women to follow the trail he had blazed and to colonize the New World. He gave the name New England to that region, and encouraged people with the comment, "Here every man may be master and owner of his owne labour and land...If he have nothing but his hands, he may...by industrie quickly grow rich."<br /><br />In 1614, Smith returned to the Americas in a voyage to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay. He named the region "New England". He made two attempts in 1614 and 1615 to return to the same coast. First a storm dismasted his ship. In the second attempt, he was captured by French pirates off the Azores. Smith escaped after weeks of captivity and made his way back to England, where he published an account of his two voyages as A Description of New England. He never left England again. After the Lensman series became popular, Smith took his Triplanetary story and turned it into the first of the Lensman series, using it as a prequel to give the back story for the protaganists in the Lensmen series. He added 6 new chapters, doubling it in size and it's really a different book from the serialized novel, being published 14 years after the first. It was put into Gutenberg just last year.<br /><br /> The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman. Note that these are presented as educational 'lessons' on the various animals found near the sea and each lesson or chapter ends with a few questions called 'Exercises' which the student is asked to see if the main points of the chapter are retained. The richness of the truths explained, will make one want to listen to it over and over again. The book writes about our part and God's part in the Christian life. It also reveal many secrets to the Christian life.
