5ERIC ED379796: Building Community In An Administrator Development Academy.

By

The Administrator Development Academy (ADA) is a 6-week preparation program for aspiring school administrators, developed by the Department of Educational Administration at a large state university in a midwestern city. Since 1983, the program's approach has shifted from one based on traditional discussions and lectures to one centered on the participants. This paper presents findings of an ethnographic study that examined program participants' patterns of behavior, beliefs, and practices. Data were obtained from observation, interviews, and document analysis. The program, based on the tenets of adult learning theory, emphasizes the development of reflective practices and interpersonal communication. Through group work, students learned trust and interdependence and began to view others as resources. Findings indicate that participants developed collegial relationships, the norm of shared work, and interpersonal communication skills. One figure and one table are included. Contains a 6-item reading list and 42-item bibliography. (LMI)

7Building Community To Move Forward With Michelle Wolfe

By

Over the last 18 months, our social lives have been impacted. We have likely made new connections but have lost connection to some of the most important people in our lives. We have been forced to grieve and manage this ever-changing life in ways that we (for the most part) were NOT ready for.My guest today is Michelle Wolfe, and she is one of those charming, inspiring, high vibrational women who just makes you feel good about yourself. And so as soon as we became friends, I wanted to share her light with you all.Michelle is all about building community, sharing struggles and working together to help you MUVE forward. Her own personal struggles, her trauma, her grief have all lead her down a very dark road that had difficult and challenging impacts on her life. However, she was on a mission to do \"the work\" and knew deep down that life was bigger than the way she was experiencing it. The foundation of her healing journey (and adapting to her ever-changing life) is to keep moving forward. Making one decision at a time, one move at a time, one step at a time. The idea is that we don't get stuck in the past or project ourselves into the future... We stay present and keep moving forward in this moment. Time moves, and thus, so must we.So Michelle created something called The Muve Collective, which is an online space for women to share their stories, learn from others, connect with each other and be inspired by stories of overcoming struggle. How cool is that?Health and Wellness is her passion, a self-care advocate, a motivator and beautiful thought leader and today's episode is a fun, inspiring and genuine chat about life, our struggles and what is all means. I think it's Michelle's goal in life to come together as strangers and leave as friends... so let's get into this episode so you can fall in love with her just like I did.Listen to the episode and find out more about Michelle at:http://www.themichellewolfe.com/ (www.themichellewolfe.com)Or on Instagram at: http://www.instagram.com/themichellewolfe (www.instagram.com/themichellewolfe)

8Building Community At Birney

By

BUILDING COMMUNITY AT BIRNEY means sharing an experience together every day. Each morning, all Birney students staff gather in the gym to kick off their day. They laugh, they talk about the day’s schedule – and they come together as the Birney All Stars to just enjoy each other’s company. Watch as Family Liaison Megan Clark describes why the morning meeting matters to her and why it's an essential part of their Whole Child work. Birney Elementary –a regional Deaf and Hard of Hearing school – was built with funds from the   2013 voter-approved construction bond. This building and the work that happens in it are the way we build community.

10ERIC EJ1068840: Acts Of Invention: The Afterschool Program As A Site For Building Community

By

Kirsten Cole, the Director of FUN (Family University) Afterschool Program at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus, shares her experience of working with children in an afterschool program where nightly community meetings address topics the children want to discuss. The topics change, but the underlying themes are often the same: issues of respect, and feelings of anger that come from feeling disrespected. The fact that someone has listened and said to them, "The way you were treated was wrong," seems to empower and enliven them. Although the meetings can seem redundant, they allow the children to find their voice, and create a space where they feel that adults support them in expressing their concerns and articulating the kind of world they want to build together.

11Building A Culture Of Health Through The Built Environment: Adaptable Solutions To Community Well-Being

By

Characteristics of the built neighborhood environment have been associated with Action Area 1 drivers, but few studies have examined changes in built environment conditions on such drivers. The proposed project will: 1) test the effectiveness of a blight reduction intervention in cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) on altering specific Action Area 1 drivers—well-being and health interconnectedness, sense of community, and civic engagement—as well as 2) test the causal relation between changes in the drivers and resultant health and social outcomes—specifically, family and youth violence, substance use and mental health. The RCT will be conducted over four years across neighborhoods experiencing high rates of poverty and violence in New Orleans, LA and coupled with qualitative data collection. Findings will provide critical information for policy and prevention efforts and will be immediately translated locally and easily adapted to other urban areas in the U.S.

1347. Kristin Goodrich: Building Community In The Military Sisterhood

By

What do you think of when I say, \"Military Sisterhood\"? That was the question Kristin Goodrich posed to about 50 women at the beginning of a weekend retreat last March at OCF's White Sulphur Springs Conference Center. One West Point cadet's response stood out amid the varied responses, \"Sisterhood? What sisterhood?\" Today you're going to hear from Kristin, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate who is now the Executive Officer for Planting Roots, a ministry for Christian military women. She will talk about the importance of building community among women within OCF, the importance of friendships, and will zero in on a couple points of author Peter Scazzero's list of the \"Top 10 Symptoms of Emotionally Unhealthy Spirituality.\" You can also read more from Scazzero in his book \"Emotionally Healthy Spirituality.\" A second Leading Women Retreat is scheduled in 2020 from March 26-29 at White Sulphur Springs Conference Center in Pennsylvania. So mark your calendars now. Check out the OCF and White Sulphur Springs websites for more information about the retreat. Those sites will be updated as details and registration become available. You can also join the Leading Women private Facebook group by clicking here (or by sending an email to Kristin if you have trouble accessing the group). // WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT Introducing Kristin Goodrich, her involvement in USNA OCF and later OCF Council, and her calling to military women ministry. What was the purpose behind the Leading Women Retreat at WSS? More about the question \"What do you think of when I say Military Sisterhood?\" and why you asked it. What sorts of answers did you get, and what did those answers tell you? How did others respond, and then how did you follow up to continue that discussion? You said friendship in an art, not a science. How so? What is a key takeaway for listeners regarding friendship? Peter Scazzero's \"Top 10 Symptoms of Emotionally Unhealthy Spirituality.\" Kristin talks about two of the ten points: Dying to the wrong things, and doing for God rather than being with God. \"We have become human 'doings' rather than human 'beings.' We work for God rather than with God.\" How does emotionally unhealthy spiritually tie back into military sisterhood? What kind of questions were generated by going through that Top 10 list? Kristin talks about the military community largely being Type-A, mathematical, with strategic mindsets leaning towards a \"science mindset.\" But the art of friendship is subjective on how to make it happen. Any books you recommend? One book used during the retreat last year: John Ortberg book \"Soul Keeping.\" Kristin recommends \"Free to Be Brave: Moments with God for Military Life\" and \"Flourish Wherever the Military Sends You\" for those wanting resources that point women to Christ so they thrive in military life. More information can be found at the Planting Roots website. You can hear from Planting Roots Director Kori Yates in Episode 25, when she appeared as a guest on Crosspoint. What's the takeaway for listeners from our conversation? Kristin's final thought: That Christian military women accept the challenge to develop a healthy sisterhood, to view each other as a sisterhood-encouraging, exhorting each other, telling the family stories where we can poke at each other, and yet we are all for each other.

14ERIC EJ864433: Building Capacity Through Sustainable Engagement: Lessons For The Learning Community From The "GraniteNet" Project

By

This paper reports an exploration into critical success factors for the sustainability of the partnership between the University of Southern Queensland and the Stanthorpe community during the GraniteNet Phoenix Project--the first phase of a three-phase participatory action research project conducted during 2007-2008. The concepts of learning community, social capital, university-community engagement and partnerships, and co-generative learning through participatory action research and evaluation are brought together to provide a framework for evaluating the sustainability and efficacy of the university-community relationship in the context of the GraniteNet project. Implications of the findings for the ongoing sustainability of the partnership are discussed, as well as for the relevance and utility of identified critical success factors. The paper also discusses implications of the findings for university-community engagement partnerships that utilise participatory action research and evaluation processes to build capacity through co-generative learning. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

15ERIC ED496218: Building Pathways To Success For Low-Skill Adult Students: Lessons For Community College Policy And Practice From A Longitudinal Student Tracking Study (The "Tipping Point" Research). Research Report No. 06-2

By

This Brief summarizes findings from a new study that seeks to fill information gaps about older community college students. Researchers used student record information from the Washington State Community and Technical College system to examine the educational experience and attainment as well as the employment and earnings of a sample of adult students, five years after first enrolling. The students in the sample were age 25 or older with, at most, a high school education. The study was conducted by staff at the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC), with assistance from the Community College Research Center, as part of Ford's Bridges to Opportunity initiative. Its goal was to provide educators throughout Washington's community and technical college system with a detailed profile of their low-skill adult students, who make up about one-third of the approximately 300,000 students served by the system annually. The study also sought to identify the critical points where adult students drop out or fail to advance to the next level in order to help SBCTC staff stimulate thinking among educators throughout the system about how to bridge those gaps and thereby facilitate student advancement. [This Brief was developed at the Community College Research Center (CCRC), Teachers College, Columbia University. It was drawn from a longer report entitled "Building Pathways to Success for Low- Skill Adult Students: Lessons for Community College Policy and Practice from a Statewide Longitudinal Tracking Study." (ED485342). This content was also published by Community College Research Center, Teachers College, Columbia University (ED489093).]

26ERIC EJ1073197: Hiding In Plain Sight: Building Community Social Capital In Distance Education Graduate Programs

By

There is an increasing global demand for a broad range of academic programs to be offered by distance education. The development of flexible online technology has made studying for a degree "anywhere and anytime" possible and this option has significant appeal for many people. However, there is limited knowledge available to guide faculty in the strategic development of supportive learning environments for distance education students that fosters connectedness for academic success. The purpose of this three-phase study was to introduce the concept of community social capital to a cohort of graduate nursing students (N = 97) and then track implementation and impact in their on-line academic learning environment. Understanding social capital at the onset of graduate school can lead to an improved sense of how students can utilize and grow social capital, enhance bonding, and increase their academic advantage. The findings inform future education curricula, innovative strategies, and educational research agendas by suggesting that social capital awareness is beneficial to students enrolled in distance education.

35ERIC ED545650: Creating A Successful Educational Environment For The Latino/a Community: Building Home-School Communication

By

California has a large population of Latino/a students, and for most of them Spanish is their native language. The problem is the miscommunication between Latino/a families and educators in the school setting. Teachers often do not understand Spanish and are unable to communicate with parents or students. Latino/a families are not aware of the ways to support their children, given this lack of ability to communicate. A review of the literature reveals the cultural and language barriers that teachers face. Teachers also lack support within their school in providing appropriate instruction for Latino/a students and in communicating with Latino/a families. This study follows qualitative design using classroom observations in a field placement and school setting as well as interviews with teachers who have a majority of students in their classrooms who are Latino/a. Purposively elected teachers with experience in working with English language learners were recruited for interviews. Parents of Latino/a students were interviewed about the quality of the communication between school and home that is provided by the school. They were interviewed for an hour responding to a series of open-ended questions. Interviewees were purposefully selected because they are part of the Latina/o community who try to create home-school communication. Results indicated that having home-school communication with Latino/a students increased their academic performance. Students felt they had support from their parents. Parents were also more inclined to be a part of their child's education if they could communicate with the teacher. Implications from the results include the need for teachers to make home-school communication a priority for Latino/a students and their families.

38Community Stories: An Elegant Utility – Building Across Generations

By

Using everyday 20th century artifacts from his grandfather's life -- a paint can, family photographs, legal ledgers, and old magazines -- artist and filmmaker Inye Wokoma delves into his past exhibition, "An Elegant Utility," at Northwest African American Museum. Wokoma captured the enduring legacy of an African-American family's daily life in Seattle's gentrifying Central District. He examines the ways his family navigated the political landscapes of the times by learning and building in the trades and how others in his family's orbit continue to influence and empower people across the community.

40ERIC ED661776: Building Strong Teacher Residency Programs: In Support Of Sustaining A Diverse, Community-Based Teacher Workforce

By

Traditional teacher preparation pathways begin with a teacher preparation program based in an institution of higher education (IHE) and often include a student-teaching component at a local education agency (LEA). Teacher residency programs, on the other hand, offer an alternative pathway rooted in partnerships between IHEs and LEAs. In this paper, we explore the characteristics of teacher residency partnerships, examining several examples between one IHE, the Alder Graduate School of Education (Alder), and LEAs in California. We begin by providing an overview of residency programs in general and aspects of Alder's model specifically. Then, drawing on a rich collection of data, we explore considerations of how partnerships may be effectively established, prepared, implemented, and sustained. We find that many of the unique aspects of the Alder model--including residency directors, root and branch structures, generous stipends, and impact reports--warrant further examination to better understand how these practices may affect alumni and student outcomes, as well as program sustainability and replicability more broadly.

41ERIC ED657279: Building Stronger Community College Transfer Pathways: Evidence From Massachusetts

By

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE) and the state's 28 public colleges and universities have collaborated over the last fifteen years to make easier and more transparent the process of transferring from a community college to a bachelor's degree program in one of the state's public colleges or universities. In this report, we follow 10 cohorts of Massachusetts high-school graduates who entered Massachusetts community colleges (MACCs) from fall 2005 through fall 2014. We track the students in each entry cohort over their academic careers. We address two research questions: 1) whether cross-cohort trends in the proportion of students who transferred and the proportion of transferring students who earned bachelor's degrees within the next four years are consistent with the hypothesis that the state's collaborative efforts successfully facilitated these events; and 2) whether trends in transfer and bachelor's degree receipt differ across recognized sources of educational inequality in the United States. We find a mixture of good news and troubling patterns. While the overall transfer rate remained stable over this period, the transfer rate of students from higher-income families increased, while students from low-income families did not experience the same change. Smaller percentages of Black students and Latinx students transferred within six years than the percentages of Asian and White students who did so. In addition, the overall proportion of transferring students who earned a bachelor's degree within four years increased over time. The percentages of Black and Latinx students who earned bachelor's degrees within four years are lower than the comparable percentages for Asian and White students. [The Boston Foundation provided additional funding for the production of this policy brief through a grant to MassINC.]

42ERIC EJ1055580: Teaching For The Millennial Generation: Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Community Building And Individual Pedagogical Techniques

By

As a new generation of learners enters higher education classrooms, effective teaching strategies must adapt to match their learning styles. This research explored student and teacher perceptions of effectiveness of teaching methods, with particular comparison between techniques emphasizing community versus individual learning. Fifteen psychology teachers and 120 undergraduate students rated how interesting and effective they found 17 pedagogical techniques ranging from lecture to simulation gaming. Results suggested that students perceived techniques that connected them to the classroom community, such as discussion and sharing stories from teachers' and students' lives, as more effective than did teachers. Teachers gave higher effectiveness ratings to techniques emphasizing individual learning, such as papers and quizzes. Findings suggest that teachers may want to spend more time on activities that build connections between students and linking academic material to students' lives.
