3Triadic Closure As A Basic Generating Mechanism Of Communities In Complex Networks

By

Most of the complex social, technological and biological networks have a significant community structure. Therefore the community structure of complex networks has to be considered as a universal property, together with the much explored small-world and scale-free properties of these networks. Despite the large interest in characterizing the community structures of real networks, not enough attention has been devoted to the detection of universal mechanisms able to spontaneously generate networks with communities. Triadic closure is a natural mechanism to make new connections, especially in social networks. Here we show that models of network growth based on simple triadic closure naturally lead to the emergence of community structure, together with fat-tailed distributions of node degree, high clustering coefficients. Communities emerge from the initial stochastic heterogeneity in the concentration of links, followed by a cycle of growth and fragmentation. Communities are the more pronounced, the sparser the graph, and disappear for high values of link density and randomness in the attachment procedure. By introducing a fitness-based link attractivity for the nodes, we find a novel phase transition, where communities disappear for high heterogeneity of the fitness distribution, but a new mesoscopic organization of the nodes emerges, with groups of nodes being shared between just a few superhubs, which attract most of the links of the system.

13ERIC ED410597: Learning Communities: Linking The Basic Course To The Greater University Community.

By

Learning communities, freshman interest groups, or cluster classes are a relatively new trend on college and university campuses. In addition to improving freshman retention and performance, these courses create a bridge between the basic course and other courses. Learning communities are curricular structures that promote academic success by emphasizing student-student and student-faculty interaction and interdisciplinary linkage of courses. Themes around which the courses are structured are broad concepts usually selected by the participating faculty of the linked courses. Some learning communities have implemented peer advisors and incorporated some kind of social activity combined with learning. Some have a seminar for the students involved in the community. Promoting a basic course as an important component in the learning communities especially when team teaching is utilized is also a way of breaking the isolation experienced by many faculty members. Learning communities have the potential to decrease communication apprehension. They also make the transition to college less scary for many students by giving them peer advisors. Learning communities have been very effective nationwide in improving retention. (Contains 17 references.) (CR)

19ERIC EJ773397: Basic Writers And Learning Communities

By

This study investigates a basic writing course within a freshman learning Community at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Multiple layers of data, both qualitative and quantitative, provide a thick description of what occurred overall in that classroom over the course of one semester. My findings suggest that basic writing classes are more successful within a learning community in terms of student pass rates and increased engagement. Thus, further study of basic writing courses as an integral part of first-year experience programs, especially those that utilize learning communities, should be a priority. (Contains 4 tables and 1 note.)

22Does The Design And Implementation Of Proven Innovations For Delivering Basic Primary Health Care Services In Rural Communities Fit The Urban Setting: The Case Of Ghana's Community-based Health Planning And Services (CHPS).

By

This article is from Health Research Policy and Systems , volume 12 . Abstract Background: Rapid urban population growth is of global concern as it is accompanied with several new health challenges. The urban poor who reside in informal settlements are more vulnerable to these health challenges. Lack of formal government public health facilities for the provision of health care is also a common phenomenon among communities inhabited by the urban poor. To help ameliorate this situation, an innovative urban primary health system was introduced in urban Ghana, based on the milestones model developed with the rural Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) system. This paper provides an overview of innovative experiences adapted while addressing these urban health issues, including the process of deriving constructive lessons needed to inform discourse on the design and implementation of the sustainable Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) model as a response to urban health challenges in Southern Ghana. Methods: This research was conducted during the six-month pilot of the urban CHPS programme in two selected areas acting as the intervention and control arms of the design. Daily routine data were collected based on milestones initially delineated for the rural CHPS model in the control communities whilst in the intervention communities, some modifications were made to the rural milestones. Results: The findings from the implementation activities revealed that many of the best practices derived from the rural CHPS experiment could not be transplanted to poor urban settlements due to the unique organizational structures and epidemiological characteristics found in the urban context. For example, constructing Community Health Compounds and residential facilities within zones, a central component to the rural CHPS strategy, proved inappropriate for the urban sector. Night and weekend home visit schedules were initiated to better accommodate urban residents and increase coverage. The breadth of the disease burden of the urban residents also requires a broader expertise and training of the CHOs. Conclusions: Access to improved urban health services remains a challenge. However, current policy guidelines for the implementation of a primary health model based on rural experiences and experimental design requires careful review and modifications to meet the needs of the urban settings.

This document reflects work that began prior to the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act. In 2015 the Arkansas Department of Education began engaging with stakeholders to determine how the Department could better support students, educators, school and district leaders, and communities in their efforts to improve student outcomes. The intention was to maximize the flexibility offered under No Child Left Behind to rethink the approach to accountability, moving from a compliance-focused system to one of support. The goal is to unleash the professionalism and creativity of educators to provide student-focused learning opportunities for all students. 29ERIC ED285750: Open Space And Land Development. A Basic Guide To Management And Preservation Of Open Space, Parks, And Recreation Areas In Urban Communities.

By

Control of urban development and preservations of open space have become increasingly controversial issues in recent years. This booklet was prepared to help citizens and local officials resolve these types of issues. It is intended to provide a framework for positive discussions between citizens and local officials, and includes an introduction to some of the philosophical and technical issues which generally underlie the creation of a systematic policy for managing local open space. The emphasis of the document is on citizen initiation of local government actions. It contains seven chapters concerning: (1) open space development in the United States; (2) a review of open space situations across the United States; (3) identification of needs; (4) planning, goals and needs; (5) importance of selectivity; (6) open space site analyses; and (7) implementation of open space acquisitions, funding and management. Sources for more information on these topics are also included. (TW)

30ERIC ED391069: Structural-Cultural Factors Of Nonparticipation In Adult Basic Education By Chicano/a Adults In Urban Communities In Colorado. Final Section 353 Project Report FY 1994.

By

A study focused on the extent to which historical and contemporary subjectivities interplay with structural and cultural constraints to influence the decision making and human agency of Mexican American adults of the Southwest in nonparticipation in adult education. The issue of nonparticipation was explored from a social action paradigm. Data were also gathered regarding the action taken in response to perceived educational needs and desires. Information was collected from open-ended interviews with 30 Mexican American and Chicano/a adults (22 females and 8 males) in 2 urban communities in Colorado. Findings of the study include the following: (1) study participants exhibited tremendous cultural pride and identity, which influenced individual decisions and actions to engage in culturally insensitive social institutions; (2) a majority of individuals reported past efforts to upgrade academic and vocational skills; (3) almost all study participants indicated a lack of faith in the dominant enterprise of education based on experiences of educational exclusion in childhood or adulthood, intercultural struggles, and larger social and economic inequalities; (4) participants resist discriminatory educational practices by refusal, by creating their own opportunities for learning, by relying on cultural norms and values, and by proving themselves by character instead of by educational credentials. Adults who had participated in adult education reported teacher insensitivity, monocultural curriculum, poor quality programs, and a lack of intercultural understanding. (Contains 93 references.) 1Journal of Lewis and Clarke (1840)

By

"The expedition of Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, for exploring the river Missouri, and the best communication from that to the Pacific Ocean, has had all the success which could be expected. They have traced the Missouri nearly to its source; descended the Columbia to the Pacific Ocean, ascertained with accuracy the Geography, of that interesting communication across the continent; learned the character of the country, its commerce and inhabitants; and it is but justice to say that Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, and their brave companions, have, by this arduous service, deserved well of their country." This volume is the 1840 edition with woodcut images and an Indian vocabulary. 2Rhymed Receipts for Any Occasion

By

In addition to being amusing, recipes written in a poetic form were easy to remember and used as learning tools for the young housekeeper. Many of the poems in this 1912 publication were originally published in Woman's Home Companion, Good Housekeeping Magazine, the Housewife, Table Talk, and the Boston Cooking School Magazine. 4Sun and Saddle Leather

By

Book's cover

Cowboy Poetry began as a 19th Century Performance Art staged around a crackling campfire, referencing tall tales and personal stories, lost girlfriends, and love of the vast unboundaried West. It was best accompanied by a hot tin cup of boiled coffee, dunked biscuits, and beef jerky. The rhymed couplets were easy to remember, and once the day's drive was done, everybody had a few hours to listen to friends and wonder at the stars. Badger Clark gave voice and record to this unique American folk art, and built on it to express his own creative genius. He was declared the first Poet Laureate of South Dakota, or as he liked to say, “Poet Lariat.” Summary by Ed Humpal

6Pascal and the Port Royalists

By

Pascal is of the small number of those [men] in whom the man infinitely transcends his actions. The writings of Pascal are the finest that France possesses; yet they contain nothing of equal value with the Life of Pascal written by his sister in a few pages. It is of such writings and of such a life that we have to speak in this volume; and it is of unspeakable advantage to the student that he should possess a source of information respecting the early days of Pascal of such unquestionable authority. Nearly all that we know of Pascal is derived from this Life and from his own writings, and especially from the Provincial Letters and the Thoughts. These works have been commented upon, controverted, and defended; and there is little to be said on either side which has not been said already. In the present volume Pascal chiefly speaks for himself, and the comments upon his statements are generally brief. - Summary by Adapted from Preface
