8H. Glenn Penny, "Kindred By Choice: Germans And American Indians Since 1800" (UNC Press, 2013)

By

If you have spent a bit of time in Germany or with German friends, you may have noticed the deep interest and affinity many Germans have for American Indians. What are the origins of this striking and enduring fascination? In many ways, it might be said to go back to Tacitus' Germania - or at least, to 19th-century Germans' readings of Germania - but it was also indelibly shaped by the writings of explorer Alexander von Humboldt and by James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, which were enormously influential in Germany and on Germans abroad. German landscape painters also created some of the most enduring and iconic images of the American West. When Germans in America fought with American Indians over land, their compatriots in Europe tended to side with the Indians. Later, over the successive ruptures of 20th century German history, Germans always found new ways of engaging with American Indians, whether through hobbyist organizations, Wild West shows, through their political commitments to Indian political causes - like the American Indian Movement - or through the astoundingly popular novels of Karl May.Exploring with great verve the transnational connections between various groups of Germans and Native Americans over two centuries, H. Glenn Penny's Kindred by Choice: Germans and American Indians since 1800 (University of North Carolina Press, 2013) engages in a wide-ranging set of discussions that open up new and unexpected vistas onto questions of modern German history, the history of European and American colonialism, histories and legacies of genocide, and a host of other key topics. The proposed act would promote excellence in American education by: recognizing and rewarding schools, teachers, and students for their outstanding achievements; enhancing parental choice; encouraging the study of science, mathematics, and engineering; and exploring the possibility of other means. Contents include policy statements, proceeding transcripts, letters, sample pamphlets, charts, tables, figures, and graphs prepared by subcommittee and committee members. Also presented is the testimony of professional educational organizational leaders; federal, state, and local government agency officers; secondary and postsecondary school board members and executive staff; and civic and business leaders, all of whom are either advocates and opponents of the act. White Paper Roughly One In Five American Adults, Or Approximately 53 Million People, Live With Some Type Of Disability, And Their Unemployment And Poverty Rates Are Nearly Double The Rates Of People Without Disabilities. By

Roughly one in five American adults, or approximately 53 million people, live with some type of disability, and their unemployment and poverty rates are nearly double the rates of people without disabilities. Labor force participation for people with disabilities is just 20.2 percent--less than a third of the rate of participation among people without disabilities. However, this is often not by choice. At least two-thirds of people with disabilities are striving to work, whether they are already working and want more hours or are unemployed and looking for work. Many who do find work face limited opportunities and are likely to earn less. For example, a worker with a disability who has a high school diploma earns $6,505 less per year than his or her peers without disabilities. The National Governors Association hosted a learning lab on May 9-10, 2018, in Madison, Wisconsin, titled "Building Inclusive Talent Pipelines for People with Disabilities." Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Indiana and Maryland were selected to participate in the learning lab, where they learned about Wisconsin's successes and shared best practices with one another and leading subject matter experts. This paper describes strategies that emerged as best practices in participating states and other states across the country highlighted during the learning lab.
