1Affluence And Adjustment Among Adolescents: A Scoping Review
By Joana Salifu Yendork, John Cyrus and Wendy Kliewer
Globally, family income inequality is evident and continues to rise, causing a widening of socioeconomic resources between adolescents of the affluent and the poor. Although growing up in affluence is associated with various psychological risks, the majority of research linking socioeconomic resources and adolescent adjustment has been dedicated to understanding patterns of adjustment, risks, and protective factors among adolescents in low-income families. While some research has been dedicated to adjustment of adolescents growing up in affluence, findings of these studies are scattered and have not been pulled together systematically. Therefore, this scoping review aims to explore associations of growing up in affluence with the patterns of adjustment of adolescents in affluent families, and the unique risks and protective factors shaping the adjustment patterns of adolescents in affluent families.

3Does Leisure Reading Predict Prosocial Behavior And Social Adjustment In Adolescents? A Longitudinal Analysis
By Jan Lenhart, Tobias Richter, Markus Appel and Raymond A. Mar
Reading is a popular leisure activity for children, teenagers, and adults. Several current theories agree that reading might improve social cognition, but the empirical evidence remains tentative, with research on adolescents especially lacking. We will employ a very large, and nationally representative, longitudinal dataset from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) in Germany to examine evidence for this hypothesis. Specifically, we will test whether reading prospectively predicts future self-reported prosocial behavior and social adjustment in adolescents. Two-way cross-lagged panel analyses will probe the longitudinal relationship between leisure reading and these social outcomes from Grade 6 to Grade 9. In addition, we will examine the effect of cumulative reading experience across Grades 5 to 8 on future social outcomes, using structural equation modeling. We also explore the unique contributions of cumulative reading experience in different literary genres (classic literature, popular literature, nonfiction, comic books).

4ERIC EJ1089098: Trinidad And Tobago National Standardization Of The Adjustment Scales For Children And Adolescents
By ERIC
Given relevant cultural distinctions across nations, it is important to determine the dimensional structure and normative characteristics of psychological assessment devices in each focal population. This article examines the national standardization and validation of the Adjustment Scales for Children and Adolescents (ASCA) with a nationally representative sample of Trinidad and Tobago schoolchildren (N = 900). ASCA is a 156-item teacher rating scale that measures sociobehavioral adjustment. Results from exploratory and confirmatory analyses yielded the same Overactivity and Underactivity dimensions observed in international samples. The dimensions were scaled using IRT and Bayesian scoring, with scores evincing expected moderate to strong relationships with other teacher observations and weaker relationships with parent observations and reading achievement. Population performance trends are explored and implications are discussed.

5ERIC ED306329: Southeast Asian Adolescents: Identity And Adjustment. ERIC/CUE Digest No. 51.
By ERIC
This digest reviews the issues of identity and adjustment faced by adolescent Southeast Asian refugees in the United States. Most teenagers from all the Southeast Asian ethnic groups have adopted the dress, hairstyles, and manners of American teenagers, yet their ethnic identity remains strong and specific. This is particularly true for refugees who arrived in the United States as adolescents; they rarely make friends with American students, and have few cross-ethnic friendships with other Southeast Asians. Refugee teenagers are operating out of the following often conflicting identity systems: (1) Southeast Asian; (2) American; (3) refugee; and (4) adolescent. Refugees who migrated after the age of 11 have suffered particular stress. Despite their reputation for having positive attitudes toward education, not all Southeast Asians are excelling academically, because of both school-induced problems and discipline problems. The significant influx of Asian immigrants and refugees over the past decade has led to anti-Asian sentiments, and even acts of violence. Peer pressure on immigrant students is even greater than on the American-born, but school counselors and teachers can help. Parent involvement is also helpful, but it requires bilingual personnel. Refugee adolescents often manifest problems in typically American ways, but the underlying causes of their problems are rooted in their pre-immigration, migration, and post-migration experiences. The stress of their adjustment continues to be great long after their survival needs are met. A 10-item list of references is included. (BJV)

8Parental Divorce And Psychosocial Adjustment Of Early Adolescents In The Bamenda City Council Area, North West Region, Cameroon
By Isaac Gwei Nchindap
Divorces have left children in the hands of single parents, grandparents, other extended family members, even distant family friends to take care of them. This life condition has to a greater extent, caused enormous damage to the psychosocial development of children in general and early adolescents in particular. This study examined the effects of parental divorce on the psychosocial adjustment of early adolescents 12 14years in the Bamenda city council area of the North West Region of Cameroon. Four research objectives and four research questions were drawn from the general research objective and the general research question. A mixed method research design was adopted for this study. A total of 600 children age range 12 14 years served as participants in the study while 30 children and 10 parents took part in focus group discussions and interviews respectively. Data were collected with the use of questionnaires, Focus Group Discussion FGD and interviews. Inferential and Descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze data. From the findings, it was realized that the majority of the early adolescents 72.8 with parental absence due to divorce are affected by it, while 27.2 are not. This represents a significantly strong, and negative effect on all four areas of psychosocial adjustment of the early adolescents p value=0.000, 0.05 with an overall high correlation value of 0.700 . The findings also showed that the majority of the early adolescents 68.5 with parental death suffered from psychosocial adjustment issues, with a significantly strong, and negative effect on all four areas of the psychosocial adjustment p value=0.000, 0.05 , with an overall high correlation value of 0.598 . The findings also showed that 67.5 of the early adolescents suffered from psychosocial adjustment issues due the migration of their parents, with a significantly strong, and negative effect on all four areas of the psychosocial adjustment p value=0.000, 0.05 . Finally, as projected by the findings, 65.9 of the early adolescents suffer from psychosocial adjustment issues due to parental forceful displacements, with a significant, moderate, and negative effect on all four areas of psychosocial adjustment p value=0.000, 0.05 . The significant and strong effect is also supported with a relatively high explanatory power of 58.9 Cox and Snell statistics . Overall, findings showed that parental divorce significantly correlate with all the four dimensions of the psychosocial adjustment of early adolescents. 9Parental Palliative Cancer: Psychosocial Adjustment And Health-related Quality Of Life In Adolescents Participating In A German Family Counselling Service.
By Kuhne, Franziska, Krattenmacher, Thomas, Bergelt, Corinna, Ernst, Johanna C, Flechtner, Hans-Henning, Fuhrer, Daniel, Herzog, Wolfgang, Klitzing, Kai v, Romer, Georg and Moller, Birgit
This article is from BMC Palliative Care , volume 11 . Abstract Background: Parental palliative disease is a family affair, however adolescent's well-being and coping are still rarely considered. The objectives of this paper were a) to identify differences in psychosocial adjustment and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among adolescents and young adults with parents suffering from palliative cancer or cancers in other disease stages, b) to relate psychosocial adjustment and health-related quality of life to adolescent coping, and c) to explore significant mediator and predictor variables. Methods: Cross-sectional data were derived from a multi-site research study of families before child-centered counselling. N=86 adolescents and young adults were included, their mean age 13.78 years (sd 2.45), 56% being female. Performed analyses included ANCOVA, multiple linear regression, and mediation analysis. Results: Adolescents with parents suffering from palliative cancers reported significantly less total psychosocial problems, and better overall HRQoL. There were no significant group differences regarding coping frequency and efficacy. Our set of coping items significantly mediated the effect of parental disease stage on psychosocial problems and HRQoL. Further, parental disease status and general family functioning predicted psychosocial problems (R2adj =.390) and HRQoL (R2adj =.239) best. Conclusion: The study indicates distress among adolescents throughout the entire parental disease process. Our analysis suggests that counselling services could offer supportive interventions which focus particularly on adolescent coping as well as family functioning.

11The Micro-Time Effects Of Parental Care On Children And Adolescents' Psychological Adjustment: A Two-week Daily Diary Study
By Keman Li, Hanfang Zhou, Qingguang Zheng and Xiao-Yi Fang
The purpose of this study is to examine the specific instances and fluctuations of various parental care behaviors in daily contexts, and to understand how different forms and combinations of parental care influence the daily psychological adjustment of children and adolescents. Additionally, the study aims to explore potential differences between the short-term (14 days) and long-term (9 months) relationships between parental care behaviors and the psychological adjustment of children and adolescents. This study conducted a comprehensive baseline data survey involving students and their parents from elementary school (fifth and sixth grades), middle school (seventh and eighth grades), and high school (tenth and eleventh grades). Following this, a continuous 14-day intensive tracking period was implemented, during which both parents and children filled out daily reports on parental care behaviors and children's psychological adjustment between 20:00 and 24:00. Children who completed the 14-day survey were then invited to the laboratory to provide saliva cortisol samples and undergo the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST-C) to measure their physiological stress and sensitivity. The registration for this study was completed during the data collection process to disclose the study design, sample, manipulations, and measures included.

13Who Controls My Emotions And How? Prospective Associations And Underlying Mechanisms Between Parental Psychological Control And Adolescents’ Adjustment
By Martina Zemp, Achilleas Tsarpalis-Fragkoulidis, Rahel Lea van Eickels, Marie Trebo and Theresa Bonkoss
Parental psychological control is an intrusive form of parenting used to control the child’s beliefs and behavior, which can have long-term negative effects on the child's psychological and autonomy development. The influence may be particularly apparent during adolescence, although there is relatively little research on parental psychological control for this developmental phase. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this assumption and understanding the dynamics between adolescents and their parents is essential in understanding their psychological adjustment. In this study, we aim to examine the longitudinal pathways from parental psychological control to adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing problems mediated by socially prescribed perfectionism, shame-proneness, fear of negative evaluation, and emotion regulation problems (suppression and rumination). The constructs of interest will be examined using self-report instruments by an online survey with N > 200 adolescents aged 14 to 17 years. Over a 12-month period, participants will complete four time points (T1–T4), with an interval of four months between each assessment. Data will be collected from March 2023. Longitudinal mediation models will be calculated using the Random Intercept Cross-lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) in order to partition variance into between- and within-person components. Additionally, cross-sectional analyses will be carried out using structural equation modelling (SEM) with T1 data only.

14ERIC ED438327: Stability Of Regular Education Teacher Ratings Of Normal And Exceptional Students On The Adjustment Scales For Children And Adolescents (ASCA).
By ERIC
The short-term (45-day) stability of the Adjustment Scales for Children and Adolescents (P. McDermott, N. Marston, and D. Stott, 1993) was studied with 51 first and fifth graders, seven of whom were classified as "exceptional/disabled." Significant test-retest reliability coefficients were obtained, and mean differences from test to retest did not exceed 0.5 raw score points. Only two scales (Solitary Aggressive/Impulsive and Lethargic/Hypoactive) showed significant changes across the retest intervals for T scores. Individual variation for some scales was at times quite extreme. Syndromic profile classifications and discriminant classifications were also significantly consistent across the retest interval. (Contains 31 references, 6 tables, and 1 figure.) (Author/SLD)

15ERIC ED503483: What Do Young Adolescents Do When School Let's Out? Discretionary Time Use And Its Relation To School Adjustment
By ERIC
In the present research we examined variations in the after-school experience of young adolescents as a function of family background characteristics and the extent to which after-school activities were associated with behavioral adjustment at school. After-school time use was assessed through telephone interviews with 438 young adolescents (sixth-graders, 221 female) who reported their locations, activities, and companions during a three-hour block of time following school on two consecutive days. Teacher ratings and school records provided school adjustment outcome data. The amount of time involved in unproductive and productive activities after school varied as a function of sex and SES. Only modest correlations were found between school adjustment and after-school locations and activities. Unproductive activities and travel were associated with externalizing behavior problems and poorer academic performance only for those children in self care. These results underscore the importance of considering the social context within which young adolescents' after-school experiences take place. (Contains 4 tables and 2 figures.)

16Work-Family Reconciliation Moderates The Link Between Parent’s Work Schedules And Adolescents’ Behavioral Adjustment
By Filipa Nunes, Tiago Ferreira, Paula Mena Matos, Marisa Matias, Teresa Leão, Ana Henriques and Helena Carvalho
In the last half-century, we have witnessed substantial social changes that have posed important challenges in how individuals and families position themselves in the labor market. The transition to a globalized service economy, based on technological development, brought several important implications for people’s and families’ lives. Long and unpredictable working hours, shift work, and/or weekend work can impoverish personal and family life. Work schedules, namely the hourly timeframe and weekly schedules implied in job performance, have potential implications for individuals and their families. Prior research suggests that parents’ nonstandard work schedules are associated with higher parental sleep disruption, physical exhaustion, and emotional difficulties, influencing family functioning (Cooklin et al., 2016; Daniel et al., 2009; Han, 2006; Li et al., 2014). Nevertheless, the link between parents’ work schedules and children’s behavioral adjustment is relatively unexplored. This link is likely influenced by how parents can balance work and family life demands, also known as work-family reconciliation (Andersson et al., 2021; Michel et al., 2011). Work-family reconciliation concerns how well individuals deal with time constraints imposed by their work and family roles, the levels of interference among work and family spheres, and the emotional and instrumental support individuals get from their contexts for easing work-family strains. Results from prior research suggest that parents’ difficulties in work-family reconciliation can have negative implications for children’s and adolescents’ academic adjustment and psychological well-being (Li et al., 2014; Matias & Recharte, 2021; Vahedi et al., 2019; Yang et al., 2021). Nevertheless, no prior research investigated whether work-family reconciliation moderates the association between work schedules and their adolescents’ behavioral adjustment. Based on data from the project cohort “Generation 21– born and raised at the beginning of the millennium (follow-up 13 years)” (https://www.geracao21.com/en/), the current study aims to understand the links between parents’ work schedules, work-family reconciliation and adolescents’ behavioral adjustment. The results will provide an up-to-date view of work schedules patterns of Portuguese parents and clarify how work schedules and work-family reconciliation interacts to explain adolescents’ adjustment.

18Adolescents’ Psychological Adjustment During Challenging Times: The Role Of Mothers’, Fathers’, And Adolescents’ Ratings Of Loving Communication
By Gabriela Gniewosz, Burkhard Gniewosz and Michaela Katstaller
Parent-adolescent communication can be very loving even through adolescence, although parents and adolescents do not always agree. Both, level and discrepancy in parent-adolescent communication ratings serve as an indicator for the inner-family functioning, affecting adolescent’s adjustment. This 4-year longitudinal multi-informant study focuses on warmth communication within the family as a precursor for the change in adolescents’ psychological adjustment. German adolescents (N = 1,817), their mothers and fathers reported on the degree of parent-adolescent communication and, in addition, adolescents rated their emotional and social problems. Combining TIC and LCM models, results indicated that - especially for the adolescents’ social adjustment - a higher level in communication positively affects the adjustment, whereas a discrepant rating is associated with a lower adjustment. However, the effect pattern suggests that it is important to distinguish between the mother-adolescent and father-adolescent dyads. The meaning of family member’s shared and discrepant ratings for adolescent’s adjustment is discussed.

20ERIC ED285375: Relationship Between Illness Severity, Social/Familial Variables And Adjustment In Children And Adolescents With Sickle Cell Disease.
By ERIC
The study examined the effects of social support and family functioning on illness and adjustment in 70 children and adolescents with sickle cell disease. Four sources of information were used: patient interview and standardized tests; parent interview and standardized tests; teacher interview; and medical records. Results revealed several significant correlations between the child's report of family climate and the child's adjustment. As hypothesized, family environment and family/social support significantly affected the children's adjustment. The role of social support was less clearcut. The hypothesis that illness severity and familial/social forces would be closely related was generally weakly supported. It is concluded that data supports the clinical wisdom which recognizes the crucial role of social/family factors in children's adaptation to the illness. Nine slides shown during the presentation are appended. (CL)

22Early Adolescents’ Psychological Adjustment During Primary To Secondary School Transition: The Role Of Equally And Differently Perceived Communication Style
By Gabriela Gniewosz and Michaela Katstaller
The developmental phase between childhood and adolescence is a challenging and sometimes a critical phase which is accompanied by many changes in young people’s lives. Adolescent maturation, increasing autonomy from parents as well as altering demands in school evoke change processes not only for children, but also for close family members such as parents. One aspect that can change over time is the way parents and children communicate with each other. Mother, father and child may have different perceptions of how lovingly or critically the other person communicates. Even though theoretically expected interdependences among parent-child communication styles and child’s psychological adjustment exist, studies examining this perspective on the within-family level across the critical period of school transition are still missing. Therefore, this longitudinal study focuses on the period between the second and sixth school grade of 998 German-speaking schoolchildren and examines the relevance between “mother-child” and “father-child” communication style on children’s social and emotional adjustment. More precisely, it is assumed, that a communication style which is perceived equally between child and parent serves as a resource during school transition, whereas a difference decreases a child’s social and emotional adjustment.

23Perceived Parental Conflict And Adolescents' Social Adjustment: The Chain Mediating Role Of Family Rituals And Parent-child Attachment
By Jiarong Diao and Keli Yin
Many previous studies have suggested that family factors are related to adolescents' social adjustment, but few studies have examined the relationship between parental conflict and adolescents' social adjustment and its mechanism. From the perspective of family system, this study will explore whether parental conflict influences adolescents' social adjustment through the mediating role of family rituals and parent-child attachment. Study 1 will examine the association between parental conflict and adolescents' social adjustment, as well as the mediating role of family rituals and parent-child attachment by using a cross-sectional multi-mediation model. Study 2 will take reform school students as the research participants and examine the relationship between the above variables again. This study explains the social adjustment problems of different adolescent groups from multiple variables and their relationships in the family system, and has reference value for promoting the prediction and intervention of adolescents' social adjustment.

24Assessment Of Adjustment, Decision Making Ability In Relation To Personality Of Adolescents
By Dr. Sandhya Rani Mohanty
Adolescence is a period of substantial changes. As a result, research on adolescent personality change has been on the rise in the last decade Klimstra, 2013 . Erikson 1968 describes adolescence as a developmental period of “assess the identity versus role confusion-. Adolescence is the critical transition period because adolescents become more independent and begin to consider the future in terms of relationships, families, careers, and their own identity. Adolescence is the period of maximum growth with regard to cognitive mental functioning. Intellectual powers like long term memory, logical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, and decision making abilities are developed during their stage. Cognitive development takes place at a fast pace during adolescence. Education plays a major role in shaping adolescents’ life through their adjustment ability, decision making capacity. As a whole, the personality of a person develops in the desired manner in society. In the present investigation, an attempt is made to assess the adjustment, decision making ability in relation to the personality of adolescents. The survey method was used to assess the adjustment and decision making ability of college students in relation to their personalities. 25ERIC ED335542: Project Hand-Up. Helping Adolescents Needing Direction-Unlimited Partnership (HAND-UP): Stimulating Coordination And Linkage Between Occupational Work Adjustment Programs And The Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). Final Report.
By ERIC
Project HAND-UP (Helping Adolescents Needing Direction-Unlimited Partnership) was a 2-year program to enhance dropout prevention services to at-risk youth by establishing a closer linkage between Job Training Partnership (JTPA)-Ohio and the Ohio Department of Education's Occupational Work Adjustment (OWA) programs. The project's major activities included the following: (1) six regional conferences at which more than 150 OWA instructors met with local JTPA representatives; (2) five regional grant-writing workshops for more than 80 instructors who developed or improved their skills in writing proposals for JTPA-supported linkages; and (3) 12 OWA programs successfully formed a new linkage with their local JTPA program; and (4) the awarding of minigrants to 4 OWA programs. Additional linkages and grants were made during the project's second year. (KC)

26Perceived Teacher Stereotypes, Teaching Quality, And School Adjustment Among Ethnic Majority And Minority Adolescents In PISA 2018
By Miriam Schwarzenthal, Birgit Heppt and Jan Scharf
In times of increasing migration, classrooms in many countries, including Germany, comprise students with different cultural affiliations, ethnicities, and migration histories. A central task of teachers in this context is to ensure equal educational opportunities for all students (Kultusministerkonferenz, 2013). However, despite this goal, cultural or ethnic minority students and students of immigrant descent show lower academic achievement than their cultural or ethnic majority or non-immigrant descent peers (Autorengruppe Bildungsberichterstattung, 2016; Henschel et al., 2019, 2022; SVR-Forschungsbereich, 2020), with variations depending on students’ immigrant generation and cultural/ethnic group membership (Henschel et al., 2019, 2022; Kristen & Granato, 2007; SVR-Forschungsbereich, 2020). In educational research and educational policy discourses, educational disparities are often attributed to factors within the students and their families, such as socioeconomic status or language skills, which are expected to be the main driver of lower academic success of immigrant descent students (Hadjar & Scharf, 2019). However, teacher beliefs (e.g., endorsement of stereotypes) and teaching quality (e.g., classroom management, individual learning support, cognitive activation) also need to be considered to be able to explain and reduce educational inequalities. With the proposed study, we therefore aim to investigate students’ perceptions of teacher beliefs (e.g., endorsement of stereotypes) and teaching quality (e.g., classroom management, individual learning support, cognitive activation), as well as associations between these perceptions and students’ academic adjustment.

27Children And Adolescents Adjustment To Parental Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.
By Razaz, Neda, Nourian, Reza, Marrie, Ruth Ann, Boyce, W Thomas and Tremlett, Helen
This article is from BMC Neurology , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Families are the primary source of support and care for most children. In Western societies, 4 to 12% of children live in households where a parent has a chronic illness. Exposure to early-life stressors, including parenting stress, parental depression and parental chronic disease could lead to harmful changes in children’s social, emotional or behavioural functioning. Little is known about the child living with a parent who has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We systematically reviewed the literature regarding possible effects of having a parent with MS on the child’s or adolescent's psychosocial adjustment. Methods: The following databases: MEDLINE, PsychInfo, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Knowledge, ERIC, and ProQuest Digital Dissertations were searched (from 1806 to December 2012). References from relevant articles were also manually searched. Selected studies were evaluated using the Graphic Appraisal Tool for Epidemiology (GATE). Results: The search yielded 3133 titles; 70 articles were selected for full text review. Eighteen studies met inclusion criteria. Fourteen studies employed quantitative techniques, of which 13 were cross-sectional and one was longitudinal. Four studies were both qualitative and cross-sectional in design. Only 2 of 18 studies were rated as having high methodological quality. Overall, eight studies reported that children of MS patients exhibited negative psychosocial traits compared with children of “healthy” parents. Specifically for adolescents, greater family responsibilities were linked to lower social relationships and higher distress. Three studies indicated that parental MS was associated with positive adjustment in children and adolescents, such as higher personal competence, while four found no statistically significant differences. Conclusion: Although having a parent with MS was often reported to have negative psychosocial effects on children and adolescents, there was a lack of consensus and some positive aspects were also found. However, few high quality studies were identified which makes it difficult to draw evidence-based conclusions at this point. There are potentially important, long-term impacts of early life stressors, such as having a parent with a chronic disease, on subsequent life chances and health, and thus more extensive and higher quality research in this area is greatly needed.

28Adjustment Of Adolescents : Cross-cultural Similarities And Differences
By Scott, Ruth

29ERIC ED263215: Social, Environmental, And Cognitive Predictors Of Social And Psychological Adjustment In Adolescents: A Theoretical Model.
By ERIC
This paper outlines a model that could address the interaction between an adolescent's social and personal environment and the impact that this interaction could have on an adolescent's social and psychological adjustment. In addition, a set of mediating variables based on an adolescent's self-concept was presented and discussed. The unique aspect of this model is the inclusion of self-concept as a mediating variable. This model was developed to help analyze data included in a future study that will examine factors that affect the social and psychological adjustment of adolescents enrolled in junior and senior high school (grades 7-12). 31DECISION MAKING AND ADJUSTMENT BEHAVIOUR OF VISUALLY CHALLENGED ADOLESCENTS
By Bincy Mathew, Dr B. William Dharma Raja
Successful decision making in a social setting depends on the ability to understand the intentions, emotions and beliefs of others. Children live and grow in the social world. Individuals think to satisfy their curiosity and mush of their social thought is practical, to attain their goal. Children’s thought about their social world influences how they behave towards it. The main purpose of this paper is to review the influence of decision making on adjustment behaviour of visually challenged adolescents. The sample was purposively selected to study the cases of two of the visually challenged adolescents from Special School, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India. The investigator with the help of Supervisor appraised the observed behaviour of adjustment in these children. It may be concluded that the social cognitive ability of decision making is at least, to certain extent influences adjustment behaviour of visually challenged adolescents. It is solely based on the case study carried out by the investigator.

32ERIC ED324557: Patterns Of Competence And Adjustment Among Adolescents From Authoritative, Authoritarian, Indulgent, And Neglectful Families.
By ERIC
To test Maccoby and Martin's (1983) revision of Baumrind's conceptual framework, the families of approximately 4,100 14- to 18-year-olds were classified into one of 4 groups (authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, or neglectful) on the basis of the adolescents' ratings of their parents on 2 dimensions: acceptance/involvement and firm control. The youngsters were then contrasted along four sets of outcomes: psychosocial development, school achievement, internalized distress, and problem behavior. Results indicated that adolescents raised in authoritative homes scored highest on measures of psychosocial competence and lowest on measures of psychological and behavioral dysfunction; the reverse was true for adolescents raised in neglectful homes. Adolescents raised in authoritarian homes scored reasonably well on measures indexing obedience and conformity to the standards of adults but had relatively poorer self-conceptions than other youngsters. In contrast, adolescents from indulgent homes evidenced a strong sense of self-confidence, but reported a higher frequency of substance abuse and school misconduct and were less engaged in school. The findings suggest that Maccoby and Martin's four-fold classification scheme provides a workable empirical framework for those interested in the study of adolscent socialization. More important, the results illustrate the need to distinguish between two types of "permissive" families: those that are indulgent and those that are neglectful. (Author)

33Psychosocial Adjustment And Quality Of Life Of Adolescents And Adults With Congenital Heart Disease.
By Kim, Gi Beom
This article is from Korean Journal of Pediatrics , volume 57 . Abstract The incidence of people living with congenital heart disease (CHD) has been increasing every year owing to remarkable advances in surgical and catheter intervention techniques and devices, and improved knowledge of critical care for patients with CHD. However, these patients continue to face physical, psychosocial, and environmental challenges, and a number of studies have shown higher rates of depression and anxiety disorders than the general population. To improve psychosocial functioning and quality of life for adults with CHD, health care providers are recommended to inform CHD patients of an accurate diagnosis, and overall treatment process, beginning in adolescence to facilitate a smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood. Active cooperation with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, chaplains, and family members is highly recommended to help CHD patients feel normal and optimistic and to promote good social interactions, close family relationships, and a strong sense of coherence.

34ERIC ED371281: Personal Adjustment Of Puerto Rican Adolescents.
By ERIC
Puerto Rican children and adolescents appear more at risk for below average school achievement and for mental health problems and service referrals than other Hispanic youngsters. This study examined the cognitive style and the emotional and behavioral patterns associated with the personal adjustment of 80 Puerto Rican adolescents from single-parent and dual-parent homes in Brooklyn, New York. Forty youths were from female-headed, single-parent homes and 40 were dual-parent families. To compare the adolescents' personal adjustment, questionnaires and self-reports measuring attribution style, depressive symptomatology, competent behaviors, and problem behaviors were completed by the participants. The mothers of the 80 adolescents also completed questionnaires but the self reports were completed as the mothers believed their sons or daughters would have completed them. Adolescents from the single-parent families reported more external problem behaviors than adolescents from dual-parent families. Puerto Rican male adolescents reported more competent behaviors than Puerto Rican female adolescents and male adolescents from dual-parent families revealed better personal adjustment than male adolescents from the single-parent families. Public programs and policy makers should consider the importance of the parental roles of single-parent and dual-parent families in the long term adjustment of children. (RJM)

36ERIC EJ739551: Fostering Emotional Adjustment Among Nigerian Adolescents With Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy
By ERIC
This study examined the efficacy of Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) in fostering emotional adjustment among Nigerian adolescents. Fifty senior secondary school students were randomly selected and divided equally into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was treated with REBT twice a week for six weeks. The result indicated that REBT effectively reduced the levels of anxiety and stress of the adolescents. Although the experimental group's level of depression dropped, the reduction was not statistically significant. Implications for counselling the Nigerian adolescents includes using the REBT principles to draw up a treatment programme for treating identified maladjusted adolescents within the classroom and using it to manage the classroom climate in order to facilitate the teaching/learning process.

38ERIC ED650561: A Multilevel Examination Of Racial Disparities In School Discipline: Black And White Adolescents' Perceived Equity, School Belonging, And Adjustment Problems
By ERIC
National data have shown for decades that Black students experience more frequent and severe disciplinary actions that remove them from school (e.g., suspension), compared to their White peers. Despite extensive research documenting the sequelae associated with suspension (e.g., school drop-out and delinquency), there has been relatively scant research addressing the discipline gap as it relates to students' sense of belonging and equitable treatment at school, or to potential adjustment problems it make evoke. The present observational study examined the Black-White discipline gap in 58 high schools with a sample of 19,726 adolescents (Black n = 7,064, White n = 12,622) in Maryland. Employing a multilevel framework and leveraging data from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights and the student-report Maryland Safe and Supportive Schools (MDS3) School Climate Survey, we characterized 58 high schools by their excess in Black relative to White student risk of out-of-school suspension. We then assessed whether Black students' excess risk of out-of-school suspension was negatively associated with perceived school equity and school belonging, and positively associated with adjustment problems (i.e., externalizing symptoms) in a stratified analysis of White and Black students. We found that school-level discipline gaps were associated with Black students' perceptions of less school equity ([gamma] = -0.54, p < 0.001), less school belonging ([gamma] = -0.50, p < 0.001), and increased adjustment problems ([gamma] = 0.77, p < 0.001), even when accounting for student demographics (i.e., gender, grade level, socioeconomic status) and school-level contextual factors (i.e., socioeconomic status, student diversity, overall suspension rates), whereas these associations were not significant for White students. Study findings have implications for educational reform in high schools in which out-of-school suspension practices differ by race. [This paper was published in "Journal of Educational Psychology" v109 n4 p532-545 2017.]

39ERIC EJ930786: Culture And Parenting: Psychological Adjustment Among Chinese Canadian Adolescents
By ERIC
This study examined the relationships between adolescents' cultural identification, perceptions of maternal and paternal parenting, and psychological adjustment with a sample of 192 Chinese Canadian adolescents. Participants were recruited from public urban high schools and completed 4 self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using correlation and regression analyses. Results revealed that neither demographic nor cultural variables were significantly associated with psychological adjustment. Perceived maternal/paternal warmth was significantly and positively correlated with psychological adjustment and partially mediated the effect of perceived maternal/paternal control on psychological adjustment. The implications of these findings for counselling practice and future research are discussed. (Contains 4 tables, 1 note, and 2 figures.)

40The Effects Of Different Parental Care Behaviors On Adolescents' Psychological Adjustment: An Experimental Study
By Hanfang Zhou and Qingguang Zheng
Effective parental care consists of three fundamental elements: nurturing (providing acceptance, support, warmth, and comfort in the relationship), setting behavioral norms (i.e., establishing behavioral rules), and supporting autonomy development (i.e., clearly defining the boundaries of the parent-child relationship, reducing intrusiveness, and promoting autonomy; Barber & Xia, 2013; Fang et al., 2022). In the context of Chinese culture, parental care exhibits unique cultural attributes in nurturing, behavioral norms, and autonomy support (Wang & Zhang, 2007; Zhou et al., 2018). In terms of nurturing, Chinese parents show more 'material care' rather than 'emotional care' (Wang & Zhang, 2007). Regarding behavioral norms, the normative domains include personal domains, prudential/conventional domains, and overlapping domains (Chen-Gaddini & Liu, 2020), with Chinese parents exercising greater authority and control over more domains (Fang et al., 2022). In the dimension of autonomy support, parental support for autonomy is divided into promoting independence and promoting volitional functioning (Soenens et al., 2017). The former emphasizes independence after complete separation from parents, while the latter emphasizes achieving independence while maintaining a connection with parents (Fang et al., 2022; Soenens et al., 2017). Research has found that Chinese adolescents often feel autonomous while still depending on their parents, rather than being completely independent of them (Chen et al., 2012; Kagitcibasi et al., 2013; Shen et al., 2023). It is evident that parental care has different dimensions, and each dimension involves various behaviors that may uniquely affect children's psychological adjustment (Bülow et al., 2021; Dix et al., 2004; Leijten et al., 2018). This study, grounded in the characteristics of contemporary Chinese society, constructs types of parental care across seven dimensions: nurturing medium (material care vs. emotional care), behavioral norm domains (personal domain vs. traditional-prudence domain vs. overlapping domain), and degree of autonomy support (promoting independence vs. promoting volitional functioning). We will examine the unique effects of different types of parental care. Using a story induction paradigm, we will create seven parental care scenarios, one overcare scenario, and one control group to explore the unique impacts of various parental care behaviors. Specifically, which parental care behaviors promote children's and adolescents' psychological adjustment, and which behaviors hinder it.

41ERIC ED588178: Early Adolescents' Social Goals And School Adjustment
By ERIC
What are the common types of social goals endorsed by early adolescents and how are they related to their school adjustment? This article discusses the importance of assessing students' social goals during the early adolescent developmental period when peers become increasingly important and youth experience tremendous changes to the school context as they transition to middle school. Commonly endorsed social goals particularly relevant to this developmental period and to youth's social and academic adjustment at school are discussed, including: social status goals (i.e., the goal for popularity and the goal for peer preference); agentic and communal goals; and social achievement goals (i.e., social development goal, social demonstration- approach goal, and social demonstration-avoidance goal). This conceptual review presents research linking social goals to different markers of school adjustment in both the social domain (e.g., aggressive behavior, social worry) and the academic domain (e.g., effort in the classroom, grade point average). A summary of which social goals are related to indices of positive school adjustment is presented. Implications for educators and recommendations for future research on early adolescents' social goals are discussed. 43ERIC ED021350: Personal And Social Adjustment Of Gifted Adolescents. CEC Research Monograph, Series A, Number 4.
By ERIC
The study examined similarities and differences in the personal and social adjustment of intellectually gifted and average adolescents along six criteria: independent-dominant and responsible-cooperative interpersonal behavior, moderation of interpersonal behavior, unity or integration of personality, self acceptance, and accuracy of self perception. Two matched groups of 42 subjects each, one with IQ's from 130 to 150, the other with IQ's between 90 and 110, completed the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) and the LaForge-Suczek Interpersonal Check List. Additional interpersonal ratings were secured from teachers and classmates. Results on interpersonal behavior indicated that the superior students were significantly higher in independent-dominant traits, aggressive-rebellious traits, and responsible-cooperative traits. On the TAT average students expressed a higher proportion of themes of masochism-weakness and conformity-trust. On concepts of ideal traits a significantly larger number of average subjects fell above the median on the responsible-cooperative cluster. On all other items, superior students failed to differ significantly. It was thus concluded that factors other than intellect influence personal and social adjustment. Earlier studies are reviewed, and 76 references are cited. Twenty-five tables and an appendix present data. (JD)

45Interindividual Differences In Mid-Adolescents In Error Monitoring And Post-Error Adjustment.
By Rodehacke, Sarah, Mennigen, Eva, Muller, Kathrin U., Ripke, Stephan, Jacob, Mark J., Hubner, Thomas, Schmidt, Dirk H. K., Goschke, Thomas and Smolka, Michael N.
This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract A number of studies have concluded that cognitive control is not fully established until late adolescence. The precise differences in brain function between adults and adolescents with respect to cognitive control, however, remain unclear. To address this issue, we conducted a study in which 185 adolescents (mean age (SD) 14.6 (0.3) years) and 28 adults (mean age (SD) 25.2 (6.3) years) performed a single task that included both a stimulus-response (S-R) interference component and a task-switching component. Behavioural responses (i.e. reaction time, RT; error rate, ER) and brain activity during correct, error and post-error trials, detected by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), were measured. Behaviourally, RT and ER were significantly higher in incongruent than in congruent trials and in switch than in repeat trials. The two groups did not differ in RT during correct trials, but adolescents had a significantly higher ER than adults. In line with similar RTs, brain responses during correct trials did not differ between groups, indicating that adolescents and adults engage the same cognitive control network to successfully overcome S-R interference or task switches. Interestingly, adolescents with stronger brain activation in the bilateral insulae during error trials and in fronto-parietal regions of the cognitive control network during post-error trials did have lower ERs. This indicates that those mid-adolescents who commit fewer errors are better at monitoring their performance, and after detecting errors are more capable of flexibly allocating further cognitive control resources. Although we did not detect a convincing neural correlate of the observed behavioural differences between adolescents and adults, the revealed interindividual differences in adolescents might at least in part be due to brain development.

47ERIC ED419069: Mothers' Stressful Events And The Adjustment Of African-American Adolescents: Moderating Effects Of Family Organization. Publication Series No. 8.
By ERIC
This study explored the possibility that family organization may moderate the impact of stressful events experienced in the home on adolescents' functioning. Participants were 80 African-American adolescents and their mothers in a large northeastern city. (47 one-parent and 33 two-parent families). A factor analysis was used to measure "stressful life events," forming scales in four areas: family disruption; work-related stress; health problems; and relationship problems. Findings reveal that the more that families experienced disruption and the more that mothers reported health problems, the lower the self-reliance and self-esteem of the adolescents. Mothers' health problems were also linked to an increase in adolescents' problem behavior and psychological distress. Findings also revealed some of the moderating effects of family organization on the association of stressful events with adolescent adjustment. In homes high in organization, an increase in disruption was associated with lower psychological distress, while in homes low in organization increases in disruption were associated with an increase in psychological distress. In highly organized homes, the stability and structure of the family environment may offset the impact of disruptive experiences. Some limitations of this research are discussed. (Contains 2 tables and 28 references.) (SLD)

48ERIC ED141735: The School Adjustment Of Adolescents With Average Intellectual Ability In A High Ability Suburban School District.
By ERIC
Subjects were ninth graders in a highly competitive midwestern suburban school. All subjects had attended school in the district for their entire education. The "average" group of 49 students was compared with the "high ability" group of 124 students. Results were analyzed to determine whether differences were statistically significant. It was found that a competitive, suburban school environment with a large population of highly intelligent students has an adverse effect on the school adjustment of average ability students. Average ability females had poorer attitudes toward school, both males and females had poorer study habits, females had greater absences, and both average ability males and females were lower than a comparison group in reading and mathematics achievement. By ERIC
The self-concept and quality of friendship of 40 adolescents with visual impairments (20 in public schools and 20 in a residential school) were compared to those of 41 sighted adolescents. The findings indicate a similar self-concept profile for sighted adolescents and adolescents with visual impairments, although the scores of the participants with visual impairments were higher in all domains except their fathers' concept of them. The implications of these findings are discussed.

3Rob Roy
By Sir Walter Scott

Rob Roy is a historical novel by Walter Scott. It is narrated by Frank Osbaldistone, the son of an English merchant who travels first to the North of England, and subsequently to the Scottish Highlands to collect a debt stolen from his father. On the way he encounters the larger-than-life title character of Rob Roy MacGregor. Though Rob Roy is not the lead character (in fact the narrative does not move to Scotland until half way through the book) his personality and actions are key to the development of the novel. 4Journals of Robert Falcon Scott; Vol 1 of 'Scott's Last Expedition'
By Leonard Huxley and Robert Falcon Scott

Capt. Robert F. Scott's bid to be the leader of the first expedition to reach the South Pole is one of the most famous journeys of all time. What started as a scientific expedition turned out to be an unwilling race against a team lead by R. Admunsen to reach the Pole. The Norwegian flag already stood at the end of the trail when Scott's party reached their target. All the five men of the Scott expedition who took part in the last march to the Pole perished on their way back to safety.<br><br> Robert F. Scott kept a journal throughout the journey, all the way to the tragic end, documenting all aspects of the expedition. The famous last words of the journal were: 'It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. For God's sake look after our people.'<br> (Summary by Illiterati)

Illegitimacy, false identity, and bankruptcy are the major elements of Sir Walter Scott's 1816 novel, The Antiquary. Set in the period of the French Revolution, the novel's hero, Lovel, struggles to gain repute and the hand of his beloved despite his uncertain parentage. During these pursuits, he befriends the title's antiquary, Johnathan Oldbuck, who finds Lovel a captive audience to his scholarly studies and a tragic likeness to his own disappointments in love. 8Translations & Imitations of German Ballads
By Sir Walter Scott
The narrative poems in this collection are written by Sir Walter Scott - the well-known Scottish poet and novelist. Each of these five poems are based loosely upon German ballads: rewritten in flowing English meter. <br></br> * The Chase - a.k.a. The Wild Huntsman - A profligate, noble-born keeper of the royal forest - avidly addicted to the pleasures of the hunt - cruelly uses and mistreats his fellow-men. One day God's messengers come to test him: executing sentence immediately in just proportion to the huntsman's responses.<br></br> * William & Helen - William - long thought dead - unexpectedly returns at midnight from the crusades to marry his betrothed. Helen - relieved at his return - joyfully agree,s after initial misgivings: follows him on horseback into the night. Approaching the church in which they will celebrate their wedding: it is clear to Helen that all is not what it seems. But, with their mutual love strong enough to transcend death itself - what can possibly go wrong?<br></br> * The Fire King - Count Albert never returns from crusade: having being imprisoned by Saracens. Rosalie, his betrothed, swears to leave at once for Lebanon to find him. Rosalie succeeds - but alas, all is changed between them forever: and their parting is death itself.<br></br> * Frederick & Alice - Frederick breaks troth and abandons the beautiful Alice: sending her mad with grief. But Alice contrives to meet her faithless lover once more: beyond the grave.<br></br> * The Erl-King - The Erl-King (or Oak-King) sings for the soul of a human boy: who cringes for dear life within the arms of his father riding home through the dreary wood. But do spirits really have power to charm away the lives of the living?<br></br> (Introduction by Godsend)

9Bridal of Triermain
By Sir Walter Scott
Scott's The Bridal of Triermain is a rhymed, romantic, narrative poem which weaves together elements of popular English legend using dramatic themes. <br></br>This beautiful poem celebrates the exploits of a knight errant - Sir Roland De Vaux - as he seeks to rescue (and hopefully espouse) a beautiful maiden, Gyneth. Gyneth is the illegitimate daughter of King Arthur: doomed by Merlin 500 years previously to an enchanted sleep inside a magic castle. The enchantment can only be broken by a rescuer both brave and noble enough to overcome the temptations used successively to distract and overcome him, namely: fear, wealth, pleasure and pride.<br></br>(Introduction by Godsend)

12Lord of the Isles
By Sir Walter Scott
In stunning narrative poetry, the story begins during the time when Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick has been hunted out of Scotland into exile by the English and their allies. Bruce returns over sea from the Island of Rachrin: but is forced to land close to hostile forces at Artonish Castle on the seacoast of Argylshire. Seeking refuge from tempestuous seas, Bruce begs shelter from Ronald, Lord of the Isles: inadvertently on the day of his marriage feast to the beautiful Edith of Lorn.<br><br /> Bruce's very presence is enough to interrupt the nuptials and to break up the festivities: the guests quickly polarise into two armed and equally matched factions: one ready to raise Bruce to the Scottish crown, the other ready to slay him for desecration and murder. The combatants are dispersed with no bloodshed only by the combined offices of Lord Ronald himself, aided by a visiting Abbot: whereupon Bruce quickly removes himself to first the Island of Sky, and then Ayrshire: raising the an army willing to rout the English and re-establish Scottish independence. <br><br /> Bruce begins to win a steady stream of victories as his armies march inevitably towards Bannockburn. There, Bruce confronts Scotland's formidable enemy - led by the son of the Hammer of the Scots: the English outnumbering the Scots by more than two to one. <br><br /> - Can Bruce - the so-called fugitive, traitor, and turn-coat - succeed against the massed might of England?<br> - Will the beautiful Edith choose to side with her blood-relations - who fight for England; or with Lord Ronald, her betrothed - who marches to battle behind Scotland's Bruce? <br /> (Introduction by Godsend)

13Ivanhoe NL
By Sir Walter Scott

22Black Dwarf
By Sir Walter Scott

The Black Dwarf is the first of the “Tales of My Landlord” series, which also includes The Bride of Lammermoor and The Heart of Midlothian. The third preliminary chapter depicts two horsemen arriving at the Wallace Inn in Gandercleugh, where one of the horsemen relates the tale. The story proper is set on the Scottish borders during the reign of Queen Anne. The Jacobite movement is in its infancy, but the inhabitants of this part of the country have enough to quarrel about without politics inciting them to it. Several families of high and low birth bear no good intentions to each other, and a weird, brooding dwarf, who wishes ill on all of humanity, seems to direct and perpetuate the mayhem from his lonely cottage on Mucklestane Moor. 23Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field
By Sir Walter Scott

Marmion is an epic poem in six cantos, written in emulation of the ancient Scottish minstrel style which was of such great interest to Scott. Unlike its predecessor, The Lay of the Last Minstrel, this one contains "introductions" to each canto, in the guise of poetic letters which serve the purpose of linking the ancient historical setting with Scott's contemporaneous society - a device which attracted some criticism.<br></br>The story of Lord Marmion and his arch-enemy Harold de Wilton is told with Scott's familiar swirling dark flair, combining a complex tale of intrigue, inconstancy and deception with the historical details of the Battle of Flodden Field, in which the English forces routed those of Scotland, killing the Scottish king. - Summary by Peter Tucker

24Romance of Polar Exploration
By G. Firth Scott

While stories of the Polar explorers and their efforts to reach the Poles have been told again and again, the constant renewal of expeditions adds, every year, fresh incidents to the record, until it may almost be said that the fascination of the frozen regions is as inexhaustible as the list of Polar heroes is illimitable. Nor is the interest confined solely to the achievement of modern explorers. However great the results of their exertions may be, the fact that, in spite of all the advantages conferred by recent scientific discovery and modern appliances, the explorers of to-day have failed to penetrate the uttermost secrets of the worlds of ice, renders more impressively heroic the struggles of the earlier travellers, whose equipment, viewed in comparison with that of modern man, was apparently so inadequate and often inappropriate. <br></br> No series of Polar adventure stories would be complete without a prominent place being given to the earlier explorers, and especially to that British hero, Franklin, whose name is so inseparably associated with the history of Arctic exploration. The account of his daring voyages and of his tragic end, at the moment of victory, has already been given in many a form; but the tale is one which will stand re-telling for generations yet to come. In the present instance it has been of necessity briefly written, but in such a manner as will, it is hoped, without loss of interest, render clear a comparison of the conditions under which he and his brave companions worked and fought to their death, with those that existed for later expeditions and especially the expeditions of Nansen, Peary, and Abruzzi. <br></br> The Antarctic, equally with the Arctic, now commands the attention of man. In the South, as in the North, the British race has again produced explorers who have fought their way into the icy fastnesses. From the time that Captain Cook sailed round the unknown southern ocean, more than a century ago, the British flag has waved in the forefront of the advance. The work which Sir James Ross began, over half a century since, has now been carried farther than ever it was anticipated it could be. By the voyage of the Discovery, the Antarctic continent has been revealed to within five hundred miles of the Pole, and in the gallant exploits of the commander, Captain Robert Scott, there are many who see a repetition of all that made the name of Franklin so immortal. <br></br> The source of the information on which these stories are based (as is frequently mentioned in the text) is the personal narrative of the explorer concerned, where available; and if the interest aroused in any of them requires more to satisfy it than the exigencies of space renders possible in this volume, the attention which will thereby be drawn to the more comprehensive records will stand as a slight acknowledgment of the indebtedness of the writer of these re-told stories to the authors of the original narratives. - Summary by the Preface

26Ivanhoe
By Sir Walter Scott
- Summary by Wikipedia

32Journals of Robert Falcon Scott; Volume 1 of 'Scott's Last Expedition' (Version 2)
By Robert Falcon Scott

Captain Scott’s ill-fated journey to the Antarctic Pole in 1911 is part triumph, part tragedy – but also a mythic adventure story which has inspired books, articles, and films over the generations. As so often in such cases the ‘truth’ of the explorers’ experiences (and there were many important figures in the party besides Scott) is much more rich, varied, and fascinating than the boy scout stereotype. Few know for example how much time during the many months of the journey were spent in scientific researches which remain of huge value to this day. But what comes across most vividly in Scott’s fascinating and finally very moving diary account is the complexity of the man and his closest comrades who reached the Pole fatally too late (the Norwegian Amundsen has beaten them to it by many weeks), then died trekking home, facing tortuous weather conditions, dwindling food supplies, and that gnawing, bitter sense of defeat. Ironically Robert Falcon Scott is now far more famous than Amundsen: his triumph secured by history and by myth. For if Scott was finally an imperfect explorer, he was the perfect author of his own amazing tale. Scott’s account is introduced by Clements R. Markham, president of the Royal Geographical Society at the time of the expedition; and concluded by E.L. Atkinson, a member of Scott’s party and leader of the relief expedition which found the bodies of Scott and his comrades some months after their death in November 1912. - Summary by Steve Gough

Her acts lead her in the courtships of three completely different men, but in the end, fate chooses for her, and Cordelia emerges a changed person. A tale of mystery, blackmail and love, written in just 23 days by Leroy Scott, a reporter familiar with the intrigues and social scandals the public enjoys, as the story was also made into a silent film in 1923. - Summary by Rapunzelina

48Recruiting Songs
By Temple Scott
This rousing collection of poems is sure to bring out patriotic sentiments in us all. These works were written with the glories of victory in mind - victory based on dignity and basic human rights for all. The strident call to arms expressed here can't help but stir the soul and inspire the imagination with thoughts of a vanquished enemy and the triumph of a defender of truth and liberty. <br><br> The concept of hope, as elusive as it may be amid the field of battle, is always an asset when possessed by those in combat. This hope, this aspiration of a brighter future accompanied by a strident call to join the war effort is so aptly portrayed by poet Temple Scott. Here are a series of awe-inspiring songs of the splendor of victory, the anguish of defeat and, ultimately, the appeal to a higher power for guidance - in the words of Scott, "Though tempest-tossed and battle-scarred, we still aspire Thy way to tread". <br> - Summary by Bruce Kachuk

49Hosea: from The Holy Bible with Original Notes
By Thomas Scott
Hosea, whose prophecy we now enter upon, exercised his sacred office for a great many years: he predicted the captivity of the ten Tribes long before it arrived, yet he probably lived to witness its near approach. He is supposed to have been of the kingdom of Israel, though his prophecies frequently relate to Judah also His style is remarkably concise, sententious, and unconnected, though some parts are peculiarly pathetic, animated, and sublime. His general scope was to convince his people of their exceeding sinfulness, and to warn them by the terror, and lead them by the goodness, of God to repentance. - Summary by Introduction
