1ERIC EJ1016023: What Is The Role Of The Arts In A Primary School?: An Investigation Of Perceptions Of Pre-Service Teachers In Australia
By ERIC
The arts are an important compulsory subject area in Australian schooling. In 2014, the Australian National Curriculum for the arts is scheduled for implementation. While the arts may be a compulsory subject area and expected to be taught in classrooms by primary school teachers, current perceptions held by teachers may be different to the view held in the Australian National Curriculum. This paper explores the views of pre-service teachers, who will be future primary school teachers. Through the use of a survey, data was collected from two Australian universities to develop an understanding of what pre-service teachers think about the role of the arts in a primary school. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings provide perceptions about the role of artists in schools, visiting arts galleries, current arts engagement in their own lives and confidence levels to teach the arts. Suggestions are provided for teacher education providers, curriculum developers and policy advisors about ways to support and enhance positive perceptions of arts in primary schools throughout Australia. (Contains 2 tables.)

2Institute Of Ideas Arts And Society Forum: What Is Literature?
By Institute of Ideas
Institute of Ideas Arts and Society Forum: What is literature? Jean-Paul Sartre's famous manifesto, What is Literature?, published in his review Les Temps modernes in 1947, has always caused controversy with its theory of commitment in writing and its provocatively simple questions: what is writing? why does one write? and for whom? It seems to reject both intrinsic, art for artâs sake, and instrumental theories of the value of literature; seeing instead the value of a work of art as being constituted in an "appeal". Does his representation of the work of art, of literature in particular, as a âgiftâ between a free writer and a free reader help us understand anything about the value of art more generally or does it even fail to understand how literature works? Questions to think about What is Sartreâs theory of commitment in literature? Does it reduce literature to politics? Enslave it to a "party line"? If to write is to "disclose the world and to offer it as a task to the generosity of the reader", if it is "an act of confidence in the freedom of men", then is that enough to answer the question, why write? If a writer has only one subject - freedom - then is Sartre saying a lot or a little? Is Sartre right to claim that words have a power, are like 'loaded pistols'? Is there then a responsibility involved in taking up oneâs pen? Does it make some books evil, some good? Give them a power to change the world? Is it true that writers only write of the present day? That they write about the present and for the present? Are books really like bananas? Do "you have to eat them on the spot, where they've just been picked?" Who is the writer's public? Suggested readings: Sartre, What is Literature? George Orwell, Why I write

4What Is Arts @ 302
By City of Broken Arrow, OK
In 2014, voters in Broken Arrow approved a funding of $1.4 million to establish a creative arts center in the Rose District. This bond funding, combined with fundraising initiatives, led to the construction of the building that now houses Arts @ 302, the Brown-Kimbrough Center for Arts, Innovation, and Creativity on Main Street. With the General Obligation Bond Election approaching in April 2026, this election represents a crucial opportunity for the community to influence Broken Arrow’s future. The proposed projects aim to improve the city’s infrastructure and broaden cultural offerings, reflecting the residents' aspirations for a lively and thriving community.

20ERIC ED508130: What Is The Effect Of Full Inclusion Of EC Students In Regular Language Arts Classes On Student Performance In Reading?
By ERIC
The purpose of this action research study was to investigate the effect of full inclusion of EC students in regular Language Arts classes on student performance in reading. The study was instituted from the third week of the school and ran for an entire school year. The target population (an inclusion class of sixth graders) was identified. Data collection began with the Fall Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation (GRADE) test which counted as a pretest. Student scores for each school system quarterly grades were also collected. Other school system student scores were the 5th grade End of Grade (EOG) scores which were collected as a pretest for the 6th grade EOG. A preliminary check of the findings was done after the results of the Spring GRADE test, the posttest, were received. A t Test for non-independent samples yielded a significant difference between the means of the pretest and posttest of the GRADE test suggesting that the students' performance in reading had improved for this inclusion class. The other data showing student performance in the EOG and quarterly tests also yielded results that suggested that the students in this group experienced a significant improvement in their performance in reading. The EC sub group also showed very significant gains in reading scores on the quarterly tests. However, the EC students as a subgroup did not show any significant growth for both the GRADE and EOG scores. The following are appended: (1) Application to the Committee on Human Participants in Research (CHPR); (2) Consent to Participate in a Research Study; (3) Consent Statement and Inclusion Survey; (4) Teacher Letter; (5) Validity and Reliability Information for the GRADE Test; (6) Parent Letter; and (7) Triangulation Matrix. (Contains 3 tables.)

21ERIC EJ822325: A Restart Of What Language Arts Is: Bringing Multimodal Assignments Into Secondary Language Arts
By ERIC
This article presents student experiences within an 11th- and 12th-grade language arts course as a lens to examine how language arts teachers might embed multimodality, an awareness of student learning through not only print and verbal language activities but also visual, kinesthetic, aural, and spatial activities, in their courses as a means of developing stronger critical thinking. Examining these students' responses to the course highlights a need to rethink a tacit hierarchy within language arts classrooms that places print as most important and instead posit print texts as part of a wider range of communication options. (Contains 1 table.)

24ERIC EJ977358: "College Is A Good Place To Go To Become What You Want To Become": A Collaboration Between Liberal Arts Undergraduates And Urban Middle School Students
By ERIC
In the United States, there is a pressing need to bridge the divide between the higher education institutions where teachers are prepared and the school sites where they work with students. Linking the theoretical foundations of teacher education programs with practical experience in K-12 classrooms offers future teachers the fundamental opportunity to learn both in and from practice, developing a stance of inquiry about their teaching. These collaborations are particularly critical for urban classrooms where the cultural backgrounds and communication patterns of students so often differ from the predominantly mono-cultural body of future educators and where schools struggle to retain a stable corps of highly-qualified teachers. This article reports on the development, implementation, and outcomes of a partnership between Garrett College, a highly-selective private liberal arts college, and Worthington Charter School, a public K-8 charter school in Baltimore, Maryland. This partnership, which was initiated in 2007, launched the first of an annual series of College and Career Institutes for middle school students in the spring of 2009. Through research into the experiences of both groups of students, the authors find changed perspectives and strong relationships resulting from participation, each mediated by the individual's background and prior perspectives. They conclude that there is considerable value in bringing together individuals from disparate backgrounds as co-owners in a meaningful and joint educational endeavor. (Contains 3 tables and 2 notes.)

29ERIC EJ1018332: Arts Integration: What Is Really Happening In The Elementary Classroom?
By ERIC
Researching how Arts Integration is practiced in a primary school, this article explores how elementary teachers understand, implement, and experience Arts Integration. Weaving together personal experiences, teacher interviews, focus group sessions, classroom observations, and written texts, I investigate how the arts are often devalued in Arts Integration. Not only are the arts used for decorative purposes, but the arts component in Arts Integration is greatly diluted as well. Addressing what can be done to attend to the problem of devaluing the arts in the classroom, this essay holds implications for teacher education, Arts Integration and curriculum development.
