2ERIC ED573041: How Well Does High School Grade Point Average Predict College Performance By Student Urbanicity And Timing Of College Entry? REL 2017-250

By

This report is a companion to a study that found that high school grade point average was a stronger predictor of performance in college-level English and math than were standardized exam scores among first-time students at the University of Alaska who enrolled directly in college-level courses. This report examines how well high school grade point average and standardized exam scores predict college grades by the urbanicity of students' hometown and timing of college entry. Among recent high school graduates from both urban and rural areas of Alaska, high school grade point average was a better predictor of college course grades than were SAT, ACT, or ACCUPLACER scores. It was a more powerful predictor of college performance among students who entered college within a year of high school graduation than among students who delayed college entry. For students who delayed college entry, high school grade point average was a better predictor than were standardized exam scores in English, but that was not always the case in math. The following is appended: Methods. [For the companion report, "Developmental Education and College Readiness at the University of Alaska. REL 2016-123," see ED565798.]

3ERIC EJ1139902: How Well Do Trait Measures Of Achievement Predict Students' Perceptions Of The Link Between Personal Effort And Academic Performance?

By

The concept of Grit has gained momentum in the last several years as a better predictor of achievement than traditional measures, such as IQ. Duckworth, et al. (2007) found grit to be positively correlated to the Big Five personality dimension of conscientiousness, but not to IQ, causing the authors to hypothesize that grit is a good noncognitive supplemental predictor of academic success. The current study is a continuing interdisciplinary investigation of the relationship between college students' perceptions of the link between personal effort and academic performance, and the influence of trait measures such as grit and the Big Five personality dimensions on students' perceptions of the link between personal effort and academic performance (Mannahan & Gray, 2015). Results indicated a significant positive correlation between grit and motivation and a significant positive correlation between conscientiousness and motivation, but conscientiousness did not relate to any other items on the Effort and Performance Inventory. Similar to the findings of Duckworth, et al. (2007), grit was correlated with conscientiousness, but conversely, grit was not related to most of our measures of perceptions of personal effort and academic performance.

4Influence Of Spiritual Intelligence And Role Stress On Performance Auditors With Psychological Well-Being As A Moderate (Study At The Inspectorate Of South Sulawesi Province)

Community confidence in the accountant profession has now undergone significant changes as a result of some auditing failure cases. The performance of poor auditors in carrying out tasks can be affected by conditions where auditors are vulnerable to occupational stress. Working conditions that are less conducive can affect the performance of the auditor so as to influence the community's confidence in the auditor as an independent party in the auditing of financial statements. This research is a quantitative study with a descriptive approach. Method of collecting data using questionnaires shared directly on the internal auditor of the Inspectorate of South Sulawesi Province. The data used in the research is the primary data collected through questionnaire surveys. Data analysis uses multiple linear regression analyses and moderating regression analyses with interaction test approaches. The results showed that spiritual intelligence has a positive effect on the performance of Auditors, role stress negatively affects the performance of auditors, psychological well-being is able to moderate spiritual intelligence to the performance of Auditors, as well as psychological well-being unable to moderate the role of stress on the performance of Auditors in the Inspectorate of South Sulawesi Province. The implications of this research are expected to be the level of stress experienced by the auditor at the Inspectorate of South Sulawesi Province can be solved by implementing spiritual intelligence. The Spiritual intelligence owned by the auditor when it supports the psychological well-being, then the auditor will be able to control itself and encourage to improve the quality of its performance.

6The Influence Of Athletes’ Appraisals Of Stressors On Health, Well-being, And Performance

By

Competitive sport is a highly pressurized environment in which athletes experience competitive, organizational, and personal stressors (Moore et al., 2019). Athletes’ appraisals of stressors underpin emotional responses and coping efforts, influencing how they experience and respond in high-pressure environments (Lazarus, 1999). Despite some research linking appraisals with important outcomes (e.g., performance; Hase et al., 2019), a review of studies on primary and secondary appraisals and non-performance related outcomes (e.g., health, well-being) does not yet exist. This novel, mixed methods systematic review will synthesize the literature on athlete’s appraisals of stressors (both primary and secondary) with the aim of better understanding how they are linked to health, well-being, and performance. Following PRISMA guidelines, systematic literature searches of CINAHL, PsycINFO, PSYCArticles, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science were conducted. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to: (1) be published in peer-reviewed journals and written in English or French, (2) use a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods design, and (3) have measured primary and/or secondary appraisals among athletes and examined how these appraisals related to at least one outcome (i.e., health, well-being, or performance). After 4088 initial hits, abstract and title screening resulted in a 230 studies progressing to the full-text screening phase. full-text screening is currently in progress. Once full-text screening is complete data will be extracted, synthesized using meta-narrative synthesis (Greenhalgh et al., 2005), and the quality of the literature will be assessed using the MMAT (Hong et al., 2018).

7Goldilocks’ Goes People Management: Too Much, Too Little, Or Just Right? A Quantitative Study On The Optimal Level Of People Management For Well-being And Performance In The Dutch Healthcare Sector

By

Over the past decades, the role of line managers in determining the effectiveness of HRM has been a key focus for both scholars and practitioners (Kurdi-Nakra et al., 2022; Purcell & Hutchinson, 2007; Trullen et al., 2020). People management—which is a combination of two key elements: (1) the implementation of HR practices by line managers and (2) their supportive leadership behavior (Knies et al., 2020; Purcell & Hutchinson, 2007)—is shown to be positively related to employee and organizational outcomes. However, emerging research also highlights cases where people management, despite being well-intentioned, does not yield beneficial effects (e.g. Van Harten, 2016). These contrasting findings present an interesting avenue for further investigation. This project explores the possibility that the inconsistent effects of people management on employee well-being and performance stem from a nonlinear relationship. Specifically, we draw on the Too-Much-of-a-Good-Thing (TMGT) principle, which posits that high levels of a typically beneficial factor—such as people management—can reach an inflection point (an optimal level) beyond which the positive effects diminish or even turn negative (Pierce & Aguinis, 2013). Some empirical studies support the existence of the TMGT principle (Molines et al., 2020; Yu et al., 2022). However, this field of research remains in its infancy, and there is limited knowledge about the factors that determine the optimal level of people management (Mulder et al., under review). Our project aims to address this gap by investigating the nonlinear relationship between people management and outcomes and the factors under which people management reaches its optimal effectiveness, offering new insights into how managers can balance their efforts to maximize employee and organizational outcomes. One of these explanatory factors we aim to study in this project is the difference between the needed and offered people management support employees perceive. We propose that when employees perceive an ‘overinvestment’ - more support offered than needed – or ‘underinvestment’ - less support offered than needed – the impact of people management could be negative (Buunk et al., 1993; Deelstra et al., 2003).

8Influence Of Acute And Chronic Therapeutic Heating On Cognitive Performance And Well-being.

By

This study explores whether regular passive heat exposure (e.g., hot water bathing) can improve cognitive function, sleep, and well-being. Passive heat exposure has been shown to activate beneficial stress-response pathways, similar to exercise, and may be particularly helpful for those with reduced capacity to exercise. By replicating a recent study on cold-water immersion, which was shown to enhance sleep and executive function, we aim to determine if a similar frequency and dose of passive heat can achieve equivalent outcomes. Understanding these effects may support the use of heat therapy as an accessible intervention for brain and mental health.

9The Dark And Bright Side Of Unfinished Work Tasks: Predictability And Rumination As Antagonistic Mechanisms Explaining Its Link With Employee Performance And Well-being

By

The purpose of this daily diary study is to examine how unfinished work tasks, a stressor recently introduced as a meaningful negative aspect of work, are related to performance and employee strain. In contrast to previous studies, we hypothesize that unfinished work tasks may also unfold positive consequences regarding one's performance and reduce strain by increasing the predictability of the work tasks the employee will face on subsequent days. By helping the employee to better prepare and plan for the next day, they are likely to focus more on completing these tasks on the following working day. At the same time, unfinished work tasks reduce uncertainty about one's work and thus should reduce strain levels. For this reason, we introduce the predictability of work tasks as a mechanism to provide better insights into the impact of unfinished work tasks. However, unfinished work tasks have also psychological costs: It is well known that finishing work in the evening while several tasks remain uncompleted increases tension. Unfinished work tasks keep work-related information in memory, hindering proper detachment in the evening. We expect that this pathway via negative rumination explains why strain-levels remain elevated and performance impaired. In addition, we consider a boundary condition that can block the positive effects of predictability. In cases where employees are frequently disturbed by interruptions the next day, the effect of predictability on performance is weakened, such that the positive effects are significantly lower or possibly even disappear when employees report a high number of interruptions. In other words, frequent interruptions can undermine the positive performance effects of predictability. Interruptions should also affect the pathway via rumination, but elsewhere in the indirect effect: We expect that daily unfinished work tasks are more positively related to negative rumination when employees were frequently interrupted at the same day. This can be explained by an accumulation of stressors whose consequences goes beyond a linear effect.

11Political Trust As A Base For Distorted Political Performance Evaluations And Their Effect On Subjective Well-being

By

In this multinational study (based on international survey datasets and country-ranking indices), we aim to show that political trust is related to the ignorance of political performance problems, which ignorance, in turn, has a palliative function as it protects subjective well-being. We assume that political trust has a stronger positive effect on the evaluation of political performance in healthcare, education, and the economy (and indirectly on subjective well-being) if actual performance is more questionable.

13DTIC ADA054085: Review Of Soils Design, Construction And Performance Observations Overbank Structure, Old River Control Appendix B: Pumping Tests And Well Cleaning Operations, 1969-1970.

By

This appendix is the second in a series presenting the results of tests performed at intervals of several years on the relief wells at the overbank structure, Old River Control, near Natchez, Miss. The tests reported herein were performed in 1969 and 1970 by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) and included well pumping tests, analysis of well water samples, inspection of well screens with a borehole TV camera, and well sounding and cleaning operations. These tests were conducted to determine the decrease in efficiency of the relief wells since the latest pumping tests were conducted (1966) and since installation of the wells in 1957. Renovation attempts on four of the wells using chemical treatments and surging were not effective. A borehole TV camera was used to inspect several of the well screens prior to and after pumping and cleaning operations. Generally, the well screens appeared to be in excellent condition before pumping and cleaning. Very little sand or gravel was found in the slots of the screens except in well 11, where the screen was about 50 percent clogged with filter material. There were no noticeable chemical or biological deposits on the interiors of the screens. Chemical analyses of the water samples indicated that conditions are favorable for the buildup of incrustation in the wells. Initial 1969-70 pumping tests on the wells indicated an average specific yield of 33 percent of the original yield. After cleaning by surging, the specific yield increased to an average of 50 percent of the original yield.

14NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110012223: CMOS Imager Has Better Cross-Talk And Full-Well Performance

By

A complementary metal oxide/semiconductor (CMOS) image detector now undergoing development is designed to exhibit less cross-talk and greater full-well capacity than do prior CMOS image detectors of the same type. Imagers of the type in question are designed to operate from low-voltage power supplies and are fabricated by processes that yield device features having dimensions in the deep submicron range. Because of the use of low supply potentials, maximum internal electric fields and depletion widths are correspondingly limited. In turn, these limitations are responsible for increases in cross-talk and decreases in charge-handling capacities. Moreover, for small pixels, lateral depletion cannot be extended. These adverse effects are even more accentuated in a back-illuminated CMOS imager, in which photogenerated charge carriers must travel across the entire thickness of the device. The figure shows a partial cross section of the structure in the device layer of the present developmental CMOS imager. (In a practical imager, the device layer would sit atop either a heavily doped silicon substrate or a thin silicon oxide layer on a silicon substrate, not shown here.) The imager chip is divided into two areas: area C, which contains readout circuits and other electronic circuits; and area I, which contains the imaging (photodetector and photogenerated-charge-collecting) pixel structures. Areas C and I are electrically isolated from each other by means of a trench filled with silicon oxide. The electrical isolation between areas C and I makes it possible to apply different supply potentials to these areas, thereby enabling optimization of the supply potential and associated design features for each area. More specifically, metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) that are typically included in CMOS imagers now reside in area C and can remain unchanged from established designs and operated at supply potentials prescribed for those designs, while the dopings and the lower supply potentials in area I can be tailored to optimize imager performance. In area I, the device layer includes an n+ -doped silicon layer on which is grown an n-doped silicon layer. A p-doped silicon layer is grown on top of the n -doped layer. The total imaging device thickness is the sum of the thickness of the n+, n, and p layers. A pixel photodiode is formed between a surface n+ implant, a p implant underneath it, the aforementioned p layer, and the n and n+ layers. Adjacent to the diode is a gate for transferring photogenerated charges out of the photodiode and into a floating diffusion formed by an implanted p+ layer on an implanted n-doped region. Metal contact pads are added to the back-side for providing back-side bias.

15DTIC ADA459969: Performance Improvement In Quantum Well Lasers By Optimizing Band Gap Offset At Quantum Well Heterojunctions

By

We analyze the influence of the band gap offset at the quantum well (QW) heterojunctions on the performance of QW lasers. It is shown that, in addition to the strain, optimization of the band gap offset also leads to improved performance in QW lasers, especially in enabling a simultaneous attainment of ultralow threshold current and high speed. The improvement stems from the reduction of state filling in the QW lasers since the asymmetry between the conduction band and the valence band structures in the optical confining region is compensated by the corresponding optimal band gap offset at the QW heterojunctions. The results provide general guidelines to the design of high performance of QW lasers as well as suggest applications to other active laser devices.

16DTIC ADA297581: Investigation Of Normal Incident High Performance P-type Strained Layer InGaAs/AlGaAs And GaAs/AlGaAs Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors.

By

We have made excellent progress towards the program goals. A significant achievement was made in the development of a new compressively strained p-type InGaAs/AlGaAs QWIP grown on GaAs by MBE with very low dark current densities. This new QWIP achieved two color detection with detection peaks at 7.4 micrometers in the LWIR band and 5.5 micrometers in the MWIR band. This detector is under background limited performance (BLIP) at temperatures up to 67 K, with operation possible at temperatures greater than 85 K. The measured responsivity was found to be 40 mA/W for the LWIR peak, while a responsivity of 8 mA/W was found for the MWIR peak; all at T=77 K. In addition, the measured detectivity was found to be 1.06 x 10(exp 10) Jones at T=81 K and 1.0 V of applied bias. In addition, two new compressively strained p-QWIPs with detection peaks at 9.2 micrometers and 10.1 micrometers were characterized. Responsivities of 28 mA/W at T=45 K and V=-2.5 V and 1% mA/W at T=55 K and -1.0 V were measured at the 9.2 micrometers and 10.1 micrometers peaks respectively. The 9.2 micrometers p-QWIP has an estimated D* of 2.7 x 1O(exp 9) Jones, while the 10.1 micrometers peak p-QWIP has an estimated D*-of 1.04 x 10(exp 9) Jones. Finally, a Si-doped unstrained p-QWIP grown on (311) Si GaAs was characterized. This p-QWIP exhibits extremely symmetrical dark current characteristics and has two MWIR detective peaks at 3.0 micrometers and 5.2 micrometers. jg p.2

In this research project, we have demonstrated several novel strained layer p-type quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs) for the 3-5 um mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) and 8-14 um long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) detection. These normal incidence p-QWIPs employed the tensile and compressive strained layer quantum well structures to enhance the performance of the p-QWIPs in the MWIR and LWIR spectral bands. Peak detection wavelengths at 7.4, 8.4, 9.2 and 10.1 um with corresponding detectivities of 4x10(9), 1.66x10(10), 2.7x10(9) and 1.04x10(9) cm-Hz(1/2)/W were obtained for these QWIPs. In addition, a novel step bound to miniband InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs p-QWIP with a peak wavelength at 10.4 um and D*=4x10(9) cm-Hz(1/2)/W and a two-stack p-QWIP with peak wavelengths at 10, 5.4 and 4.8 um, D*=1.1x10(10) for the LWIR and 5.5x10(11) cm-Hz(1/2)W for the MWIR were obtained for these QWIPs. Finally, a tensile strain layer InGaAs/InAlAs p-QWIP with very low dark current, high detectivity and high BLIP temperature has also been demonstrated.

18DTIC ADA511483: Performance Evaluation Of Technology Demonstration For Dynamic Underground Stripping With Hydrous Pyrolysis Oxidation (DUS/HPO) Using A Single Well At Beale Air Force Base

By

Dynamic Underground Stripping (DUS) with Hydrous Pyrolysis Oxidation (HPO) Technology was demonstrated using a single well in a trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume at Beale Air Force Base. The performance of the demonstration technology was evaluated to determine the efficiency of TCE/PCE reduction using a single well with HPO process. Primary COC levels were observed for considerable declining trends in the monitoring wells installed in the treatment zone, with up to 85% decline in TCE levels and up to 91% decline in PCE levels. Additionally, the economic analysis showed that single well steam injection/extraction has the potential to be more cost-effective over a conventional treatment, such as pump-and-treat technology.

By

This project will test an existing conceptual model of home visitor PWB developed as part of the Supporting and Strengthening the Home Visiting Workforce (SAS-HV) project (Sparr et al., 2022). This study will examine associations between drivers of Early Head Start (EHS) provider well-being, professional well-being (PWB), and job performance—as assessed through measures of home visiting quality. It will examine whether these associations and providers’ workplace experiences vary as a function of provider race/ethnicity and EHS program community characteristics. This study is funded by a Secondary Analyses of Head Start Data grant from the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

39DTIC AD1018921: Military Personnel: Performance Measures Needed To Determine How Well DOD's Credentialing Program Helps Servicemembers

By

DOD reimburses the Department of Labor quarterly for unemployment compensation payments provided to former servicemembers. In 2015, DOD reported that unemployment compensation for veterans was $434 million. Differences between military and civilian occupational classification systems can make it difficult for servicemembers to identify civilian jobs that are comparable to their military occupational specialties. Section 2015 of Title 10 directed DOD to carry out a program to enable servicemembers to obtain professional credentials related to their military training that translate into civilian occupations. Senate Report 114-49 accompanying the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016 included a provision for GAO to review DODs credentialing program. This report (1) assesses the extent to which DOD implemented the statutorily required credentialing program and developed performance measures to guide the program; and (2) describes how DOD engages with states to enhance opportunities for servicemembers to attain credentials. GAO reviewed DOD policies and procedures and other documentation and interviewed relevant officials. GAO recommends that DOD develop and implement performance measures for its credentialing program. DOD did not concur with the recommendation, but GAO continues to believe that performance measures are needed to measure the success of the program, as discussed in the report.

40DTIC ADA373236: Development Of High Performance Multicolor Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors And Studies Of Enhancing Light Coupling And Radiation Effects In QWIPs

By

In this report, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of several high performance multi-color and broadband quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs) for both MWIR and LWIR applications. The report covers tasks performed during the period from March 3, 1998 through July 10, 1999. A very high sensitivity, high-strain, multi-color triple-coupled (TC-) QWIP using InGaAs/AlGaAs/InGaAs material systems has been developed in this project for LWIR multi-color detection. A two-stack InGaAs/AlGaAs/InGaAs TC-QWIP and InGaAs/AlGaAs TC-QWIP has been developed for the LWIR and MWIR dual-band detection. In addition, a high-strain InGaAs/GaAs TC-QWIP with and without two-dimensional (2-D) grating coupler has been designed, fabricated, and characterized for the LWIR detection. This device shows very high responsivity under 450 back-illumination. Several broadband (BB-) QWIPs have been developed for the LWIR detection. These include (1) two-stack, five-well n-type InGaAs/AlGaAs broadband (BB-) QWIPs with 3- and 7-period QWs in the unit cell, (2) 3- and 4-well n-type BB-QWIPs, and (3) two 3- and 4- well p-type BB-QWIPs. In addition, a three-stack InGaAs/AlGaAs/InGaAs BB TC-QWIP grown on GaAs substrate has been developed for LWIR detection, which has a FWHM spectral bandwidth twice larger than the single-stack TC-QWIP. Finally, a MWIR InGaAs/InAlAs TC-QWIP grown on InP substrate, operating up to T = 116K with excellent device performance, has also been demonstrated. Four journal papers and six conference papers have been published and presented from this work.

42Exposure To Nature Versus Relaxation During Lunch Breaks And Recovery From Work: Development And Design Of An Intervention Study To Improve Workers' Health, Well-being, Work Performance And Creativity.

By

This article is from BMC Public Health , volume 14 . Abstract Background: The objective of this research project is to understand and to improve workers’ recovery from work stress. Although recovery during lunch breaks is the most common within-workday break, it has received only minor research attention. Therefore, we will study whether lunch breaks including a relaxation session or exposure to nature have more favorable outcomes than usually spent lunch breaks concerning: a) recovery processes, b) health, c) well-being, d) job performance and e) creativity. We approach recovery by combining the theoretical frameworks of work and environmental psychology. Methods/Design: We conduct an intervention study in a sample of 268 knowledge-workers who engage in different lunch break activities for 15-minutes per day, two weeks in a row. We randomly assign participants to three experimental conditions: 1) exposure to nature, 2) relaxation and 3) control group (lunch break spent as usual). Online questionnaires before and after the intervention assess long term changes regarding recovery processes and the major outcome variables. Before, during and after the intervention, SMS and paper-pencil questionnaires measure the same constructs four times a day with fewer items. We also measure blood pressure and collect saliva samples to map cortisol excretion across the intervention period. A timed experimental task (i.e., the Alternative Uses Task) is used to examine differences in creativity between the three groups after the intervention period. Discussion: By combining the knowledge of work and environmental psychology about recovery and restorative experiences, by merging three recovery perspectives (settings, processes, and outcomes) and by using data triangulation, we produce valid results that broaden our view on mechanisms underlying recovery and enhance our understanding about their links to psychological, behavioural and physiological outcomes, resulting in a more comprehensive picture of work stress recovery in general. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration System NCT02124837. Registered 24 April 2014.

44ERIC EJ1077102: Comparing The Effect Of Blogging As Well As Pen-and-Paper On The Essay Writing Performance Of Iranian Graduate Students

By

In today's world, there are lots of methods in language teaching in general and teaching writing in particular. Using two different tools in writing essays and conducting a study to compare the effectiveness of these two tools namely blog and pen-and-paper was the basis of this study. This study used a quantitative true experimental design aimed at comparing the students' writing performance scores by using pen-and-paper essay writing and blogging among Iranian graduate students of University Putra Malaysia (UPM). The result of this study showed that the tools by themselves could not effect on the quality of writing essays and improvement in the students' writing performance. However, using technology and in this study, Internet can motivate the EFL learners to write more eagerly since they may like innovation in learning in contrast with traditional old methods of learning writing and practicing it. Yet it does not necessarily improve their writing performance only because of using computer and Internet. The Iranian graduate students of UPM found blog more interesting and motivating tool for writing, but it was not as easy using as pen-and-paper for them with which everyone is familiar. This research could find answers to the research questions posed at the beginning of the study and investigated the hypotheses presented then.

45TRAINING LOAD, IMMUNE SYSTEM, UPPER RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS AND PERFORMANCE IN WELL-TRAINED CYCLISTS THROUGHOUT A COMPETITIVE SEASON.

By

This article is from Biology of Sport , volume 30 . Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the leukocyte subset counts, serum immunoglobulin A, performance and upper respiratory symptoms (URS), as well as their interrelationships, of well-trained cyclists for a 29-week training season using monitored loads. The season was divided into three phases: preparatory (nine weeks), first competitive phase (nine weeks) and second competitive phase (11 weeks). The sample consisted of eight well-trained cyclists, aged 18 ± 2 years. Immunological parameters and performance were evaluated during weeks 1 (baseline), 10 (early first competitive phase), 19 (early second competitive phase) and 29 (end of the second competitive phase). The training loads (volume x rating of perceived exertion) were monitored daily while the monitoring of URS was performed every 15 days using the WURSS-44 questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and a Pearson correlation test with the significance level set at p ≤ 0.05. No significant differences were found for training load, leukocyte subset counts or serum immunoglobulin A among the three phases. However, serum immunoglobulin A was 50.9% below the control group values. URS were significantly higher during the preparatory period, and there were significant correlations between URS and training load (strain) in the preparatory period (r = 0.72, p = 0.032) and second competitive phase (r = 0.73, p = 0.036). In conclusion, indicators of training load without a significant change throughout the season did not significantly affect immune parameters measured; however, the increase of strain can cause an increase of upper respiratory symptoms throughout the season, but without loss of performance.

46DTIC ADA435542: Simulation Of Performance Of Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors

By

In this thesis the performance of a step quantum well infrared photodetector, designed by Kevin Lantz (June 2002) and experimentally studied by Michael Touse (September 2003) and Yeo Hwee Tiong (December 2004), was simulated in Matlab using the transfer matrix method. The results, obtained by the Matlab problem, are compared with the experimental results, in an attempt to make inferences about the optimum way of designing QWIP detectors. Simulation of the above implies numerical solution of the Schroedinger equation, using algorithms and methods, which give accurate results. In our approach, the transfer matrix method (TMM) was used with exponentials and Airy functions to represent the solutions to Schroedinger equation under zero and non-zero bias, respectively. The calculated results were compared with the experimental data and found to provide a good agreement which validated the accuracy of the model employed. In the final section of the thesis we examine and simulate in Matlab the application of the extended Kalman filtering (EKF) to an infrared photodetector as a target tracking mechanism to both maneuvering and non-maneuvering targets. When we used one sensor for tracking, the results were reliable provided that the target did not maneuver. In the case of a maneuvering target the results were significantly improved when we used both sensors for tracking.

47DTIC ADA260486: Determination Of 5-Bromo-2'-Deoxyuridine (BrdU) In Well Water By High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

By

A liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the analysis of 5-Br deoxyuridine (BrdU) in well water. The samples are injected directly onto a high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) without further sample preparation. Separation of BrdU from possible interferences found in well water was achieved by using a C-18 column and a mobile phase containing water and methanol. A programmable ultraviolet (UV) detector was used to monitor the effluent for BrdU. HPLC provides a rapid and reproducible method for the analysis of BrdU. High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), 5-Bromo- 2'deoxyuridine (BrdU), Ultraviolet (UV).

By

During this reporting period (11-01-93 to 01-31-94) we have continued to make significant progress towards the program goals. We have developed a new normal incidence p-type strained-layer InGaAs/InAlAs QWIP grown on InP by MBE. This PSL QWIP has achieved an ultra-low dark current and very high detectivity at 8.1 micrometers and 77 K. The detector is under background limited performance (BLIP) for T100 K, which is the highest BLIP temperature ever reported for a QWIP. A dark current density of 7x10(exp -8) A/sq cm and BLIP detectivity of 5.9x10(to the 10 power) Jones were obtained for this QWIP at 77 K. Other tasks performed during this period include: (i) Design, fabrication and characterization of a new two-color stacked BTM and BTC QWIP for 3-5 and 8-12 micrometers IR detection, (ii) design and fabrication and characterization of a normal incidence p-type compressive strained -layer InGaAs/GaAs QWIP grown on GaAs, and (iii) theoretical and experimental studies of parameter optimization for an InGaAs BTM QWIP. Detailed results and accomplishments are described in this report. GaAs/GaAlAs Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors(QWIPs), p-Type strained-layer InGaAs/GaAs QWIP, Intersubband absorption, Dark current, Responsivity, Detectivity, 2 Color stack QWIP.

By

During this reporting period, we have made excellent progress towards the program goals. A significant achievement was made in the development of a new compressionally strained p-type GaAs/InGaAs QWIP grown on GaAs by MBE. This new QWIP achieved two color detection with detective peaks at 8.9 um an 8.4 micrometers in the LWIR band and 5.5 micrometers in the MWIR band. This detector is under background limited performance (BLIP) at temperatures up to 70 K. The measured responsivity were found to be 24 mA/W and 45 mA/W for the two LWIR peaks respectively, while a responsivity of 13 mA/W was found for the MWIR peak; all at T=75 K. Th addition, a new InGaAs/AlGaAs on GaAs compressionally strained p QWIP was developed which exhibits extremely low dark currents and comparable responsivities when compared with the previous PCSL-QWIP. The measured responsivity was found to be 38 mA/W an 8mA/W at T=77 K, with the detective peaks at 7A and 5.5 micrometers, respectively. The detector is under BLIP conditions at T=63 K with applied biases from -3 V to +3 V. (jg)
