The author employs Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences to frame a discussion about the abilities of children on the Autism spectrum. Since children possess special gifts in visual/spatial areas, an argument is made to support this ability instead of "correcting" it into a more "normal" range. References from Dr. Temple Grandin's life are included. Dr. Grandin is an adult with Autism who is living a successful productive life as an Associate Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Since Howard Gardner discovered that there are several ways to be considered intelligent, the author makes a case for celebrating the differences and special contributions autistic individuals can make to society, even as these individuals must learn social and coping skills, without trying to cure these differences.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the qualities of creativity, drawing ability, and visual/spatial intelligence of selected third-grade students in the Hsinchu area of Taiwan, Republic of China. The population for this study included approximately 11,653 third-grade students from 99 public elementary schools. Subjects were randomly selected from 16 out of 99 elementary schools. The "Milne-Kasen Story Pictures" (A Test for Creativity), the "Young Visual Artist's Checklist", the "Portfolio Review Measurement", the classroom teacher's nomination of "Milne-Kasen Visual/Spatial Intelligence Checklist" were given to 427 selected students. Data were processed, analyzed, and reported using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that positive relationships exist between a child's creativity potential and self-image of artistic ability and local art educators' observations of students' artwork and classroom teachers' observations of student's art-related behaviors. There were significant differences in responses based upon the demographic factors of gender, community, age, and time of test taking. These findings should impact the delivery of art education to children at the elementary school level. In addition, it might influence the development of the art education curriculum in Taiwan. This scoping review aims to systematically map the existing literature on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP) tools developed to generate multimodal (visual, textual, and audio) summaries of the intensive care unit (ICU) journey and discharge experience. Survivors of critical illness often experience fragmented transitions of care due to inadequate communication about their ICU stay. Traditional discharge summaries tend to be clinician-centred and predominantly text-based, often excluding contextual and patient-understandable information. In contrast, emerging AI-driven technologies offer the potential to automatically generate personalised summaries that combine narrative text, visual timelines, and audio explanations, improving continuity of care and patient understanding. Despite the rapid advancement of AI applications in healthcare, there is currently no comprehensive review examining how such multimodal summary tools have been applied or developed specifically for the ICU context. This review will identify and describe existing tools, their output modalities (textual, visual, audio), target users (clinicians, patients, families), and reported outcomes, limitations, and implementation factors. The findings will inform the development of future AI-based solutions for ICU survivorship and recovery communication. This review also forms a key evidence base for the Critical Illness Brain Dysfunction Survivorship Plus (CIBS+) programme and supports ongoing NIHR and Wellcome-funded research into personalised post-ICU digital health tools.

A research group of fifth graders in one middle school who participated in the program was compared to a control group of fifth graders who had the social studies unit with no corresponding art unit. Evaluation results indicated that students in the research group performed better on a knowledge test and showed a positive impact on the Stroop Effect. Teachers indicated an increase in the use of visual/spatial elements in core subjects. With an abundance of research demonstrating a high association between working memory and intelligence, identifying the mechanisms contributing to this association poses an essential research question. Interference theories represent a promising approach and underline the importance of memory bindings as the ability to build and maintain arbitrary connections between memory items or items and their context. This study examines the role of memory bindings, specifically in visual working memory in explaining the association between working memory and intelligence. For this purpose, participants complete a Symmetry Span Task (Rummel et al., 2017) and Operation Span Task (Rummel et al., 2017) as indicators for working memory performance and the Hagen Matrices Test (Heydasch, 2014) and mini-q (Baudson & Preckel, 2016; Schubert et al., 2024) as indicators of general intelligence. A continuous Reproduction Task is additionally implemented and performance in this task is estimated by the Interference Model of Visual Working Memory (IMM, Oberauer & Lin, 2017). It is hypothesized, that the IMM’s parameters c (representing the strength of memory bindings) and kappa (representing the precision of memory representations) significantly mediate the association between working memory performance and intelligence. This will be tested using structural equation modeling.

We inquire into the potential impact of expert opinions on shaping public perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a dual emphasis on its broader societal implications and its specific ramifications for the workforce. This investigation extends to scrutinizing the perceived replaceability of jobs contingent upon the nature of work environments highlighted. To achieve this, our study assesses the average treatment effects associated with four distinct primes, encompassing expert perspectives on AI's societal and labor-related effects. We consider a spectrum of positive and negative arguments commonly encountered in public discourse on both facets. Subsequently, a secondary prime is introduced in proximity to a question concerning the substitutability of jobs by automated systems. Four unique primes accompany the question, each featuring images of individuals engaged in work, distinguished by qualifications required for the role and the perceived susceptibility of the job to AI. Our primary objective is to elucidate the efficacy of these primes in instigating perceptual shifts toward AI, encompassing societal perspectives and the employment landscape. Additionally, we seek to investigate the degree of malleability in opinions regarding AI-driven automation.

Previous research has established strong correlations between fluid intelligence and visual working memory capacity (e.g., Unsworth et al., 2014; Fukuda et al., 2010; Babic et al., 2019). However, such investigations in visual working memory typically rely on simple features as memory stimuli (i.e., colored circles, oriented lines). Recent studies have demonstrated that visual working memory capacity is increased for meaning stimuli compared to simple abstract shapes (e.g., Brady & Stoermer, 2022; Brady et al., 2016; Chung et al., 2023). Here, we examine the link between fluid intelligence and working memory capacity of meaningful stimuli (i.e., real-world objects) as well as simple feature stimuli (i.e., colored circles). Participants’ fluid intelligence level will be determined by their scores on Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices Test while visual working memory capacity is measured using a) a visual working memory task with real-world objects and b) a visual working memory task with colored circles. Afterwards, the correlation between these two performance measures will be assessed. In addition to fluid intelligence, we will also measure participants’ crystallized intelligence (assessed by the C-test) as knowledge regarding real-world objects may be related to an individual’s level of crystallized intelligence. While previous research suggests little evidence for a correlation between working memory capacity and crystallized intelligence such as vocabulary (Salthouse & Pink, 2008), it is possible that working memory capacity of real-world objects may correlate differently to crystallized intelligence than working memory capacity of simple feature items. Finally, we will also test attentional filtering using a novel task where participants judge the average orientation of specific colored lines among other colored lines as visual working memory as well as fluid intelligence has previously been linked to attentional control processes (e.g., Unsworth et al., 2014; Vogel et al., 2005).

The objective of the educational experiment is to motivate students to create artistic works by utilizing AI, guided by descriptive words, and improving their projects by applying them to different AI software. Intelligence testing is an important part of any individualized education plan; however, a verbal test measure may not be appropriate for the child with a physical disability, visual impairment, and/or the inability to speak. A child with a physical disability may not be able to point accurately or build a tower with blocks; a child with a visual impairment may not be able to identify the colors in the small boxes contained in the test, and a child who is unable to speak may not have the same command of language as a peer who is able to speak. In order for schools and others to have an accurate depiction of the intelligence of a child with a disability, alternate testing methods may need to be employed. It is in the best interest of every child to have an adequate assessment to identify his/her individual educational needs. The purpose of this paper is to present the special needs of children with a physical disability, visual impairment, and/or the inability to speak and to propose some alternative testing methods to make testing more appropriate for these children.

Depression is a mental illness that usually goes untreated in people and can have catastrophic consequences, including suicidal thoughts. Counselling services are widely available, but because depression is a stigmatized illness, many people who are depressed decide not to seek help. Therefore, it is essential to develop an automated system that can recognize depression in individuals before it worsens. In this study, a novel approach is proposed for identifying depression using a combination of visual and vocal emotions. Long short-term memory (LSTM) is used to assess verbal expressions and convolutional neural networks (CNN) to analyze facial expressions. The proposed system is trained using features of depression from the distress analysis interview corpus (DAIC) dataset and tested on videos of college students with frontal faces. The proposed approach is effective in detecting depression in individuals, with high accuracy and reliability.

Visual spatial skills are vibrant for success in science. The Visual spatial skills support individuals. The investigator not studied all the types of intelligence studied only visual spatial intelligence only. The normative survey method was employed. Sample for the study is restricted to 300 high school students only. The study was only high school students in Ramanathapuram educational District. Three dimensions of visual spatial intelligence namely mental rotation, mental folding and spatial visualization was studied. The difference between the gender, location of the student, class wise and type of scholar was investigated.

Communication theorists often make a distinction between two different ways in which a sign or a symbol can evoke meaning. In digital representation, the symbol's domain of reference is conceptually carved up into discrete units represented by purely arbitrary symbols. In analogical representation, the symbol retains a continuous correspondence with one or more dimensions of its referent. Recent scholarship has tended to emphasize the digital side, but this paper draws attention to aspects of analogical representation, arguing that the mental process through which viewers derive meaning from pictures is often based on implicit analogical thinking. Analogical thinking seems to play a major role in the evocation of meaning through abstract qualities and the control of the viewer's emotional engagement through point of view. The most obvious locus of analogical significance in film and television may be in editing. Analogical implications are central to a wide array of visual devices, and it is possible that in learning to make sense of visual communication, we also acquire an enhanced facility in analogical thinking. This study, which is part of a larger project that aims to make online math more accessible to students with visual impairments (VI), examines the text quality of math assessment items for students with VI who use screen readers. Using data from about 29.5 million students taking standard versions of the MAP Growth math assessment, and 48,845 students taking accessible versions, we identified high-quality items, those that measured achievement for both students with and without VI equally well, and low-quality items, which showed differences between the two groups of students. The researchers introduced three word embedding methods and three classifiers to predict item quality for accessible assessments. This work advanced our understanding of barriers, and used cutting-edge technologies to develop a new way to better present math content online to improve accessibility and increase the opportunity to learn math for students for students with VI.

Many studies show that g-loaded test scores can increase and decrease over time as a result of training, treatment, and educational interventions. We focus on the question to what extent increases or decreases in test scores also are increases or decreases in g. Based on a review of a large number of highly varied empirical findings we hypothesize that with regard to correlations between a vector of g loadings and a second vector a value of +1.00 means that variation in scores on the second variable is caused by biological factors, a value of –1.00 means that variation is caused by non-biological factors, and a value close to zero means that variation is caused by both biological and non-biological factors with roughly comparable effects. Five psychometric meta-analyses (MAs) were performed to test these premises. A sixth MA was performed to validate a simplified method in which Wechsler composite scores are used instead of subtest scores. We predicted a strong positive correlation between vectors of lowered IQ scores following inbreeding, and vectors of g loadings; a strong negative correlation between lowered IQ scores following visual impairment and hearing impairment in children on average aged < 13 years, on the one hand, and the vectors of g loadings on the other hand; and strong positive correlations between IQ score differences following schizophrenia, epilepsy, and giftedness on the one hand, and the vectors of g loadings on the other hand. Confirming our hypotheses, true correlations of .84 on inbreeding (K = 4; total N = 1,783); -.72 on visual impairment in children (K = 6; total N = 363); -.69 on hearing impairment in children (K = 2; total N = 1,287) were found. Contrary to our hypothesis, the exploratory MA on schizophrenia showed an uncorrected correlation of -.50 (K = 5; total N = 315). The exploratory MA on epilepsy showed an uncorrected correlation of .44, which is mildly supportive of our hypothesis (K = 7; total N = 445). The MA using a simplified method yielded an almost identical correlation as the previous more extensive one, implicating the feasibility of the new technique. Taken together, the findings of inbreeding, visual impairment, and hearing impairment increase the likelihood of the hypothesized link between g loadings and a dimension of biological causation. Limitations of the theory and implications for interventions aimed at increasing g are discussed.

On the other hand, findings from neuroscience proposed that the primate visual system consists of two major pathways, the ventral pathway for objects recognition and the dorsal pathway for spatial processing and attentive analysis. Previous studies seeking for visuo-cognitive factors of human intelligence indicated a significant correlation between fluid intelligence and the inspection time (IT), an index for a speed of object recognition performed in the ventral pathway. We thus presently examined a possibility that neural processing speed in the dorsal pathway also represented a factor of intelligence. Specifically, we used the mental rotation (MR) task, a popular psychometric measure for mental speed of spatial processing in the dorsal pathway. We found that the speed of MR was significantly correlated with intelligence scores, while it had no correlation with one’s IT (recognition speed of visual objects). Our results support the new possibility that intelligence could be explained by two types of mental speed, one related to object recognition (IT) and another for manipulation of mental images (MR).

THE RELATIONSHIP OF AUDITORY-VISUAL AND TACTUAL-VISUAL INTEGRATION TO INTELLIGENCE AND READING ACHIEVEMENT WAS INVESTIGATED. IN ADDITION, THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE TWO INTERSENSORY INTEGRATION TASKS TO EACH OTHER AND TO THE TYPE OF READING ERRORS MADE ON AN ORAL DIAGNOSTIC READING TEST WAS ALSO EXPLORED. THE SAMPLE WAS COMPOSED OF 121 WHITE FOURTH-GRADE BOYS DRAWN FROM A MIDDLE-CLASS SUBURBAN COMMUNITY. THE MEASURE OF TACTUAL-INTEGRATION REQUIRED THE MATCHING OF A GEOMETRIC SHAPE FELT, BUT NOT SEEN, TO ONE OF FOUR VISUAL CHOICES. THE MEASURE OF AUDITORY-VISUAL INTEGRATION REQUIRED SUBJECTS TO MATCH A RHYTHMIC AUDITORY PATTERN WITH ONE OF FOUR VISUAL DOT PATTERNS. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATED THAT AUDITORY-VISUAL INTEGRATION SKILLS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED TO INTELLIGENCE AND TO BOTH SILENT AND ORAL READING ABILITY, WHEREAS TACTUAL-VISUAL INTEGRATION SKILLS WERE NOT, THE FINDINGS IN THIS CASE DIFFERING MARKEDLY FROM THOSE OF BUCHNER (COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, 1964). Results obtained by other experimenters have demonstrated relationships between target detection performance and field dependence and between target detection performance and intelligence. This Note reports an attempt to verify this earlier work. During a series of field trials at Green bank, Queensland, soldiers were set the task of detecting stationary targets in dense jungle. Their detection scores were correlated with their scores on tests of field dependence and intelligence. The data failed to support the earlier findings. The detection tasks in this, and in two previous experiments, were similar in that stationary, camouflaged targets were used. However the detection tasks used in the two previous experiments correlated with tests of field dependence and intelligence, but the detection task used in this experiment did not. Research workers have generally assumed that a common factor contributes to performance over a wide variety of detection tasks. A general factor explanation is, however, not tenable for the data of this and other experiments. Research directed at defining factors that contribute to performance on particular detection tasks, and that can be measured independently of those tasks, may be more useful at this stage. than a search for a general target detection factor.
