Alcohol misuse is a major public health concern and falls into distinct development patterns throughout the lifespan (Meier et al., 2013; Jackson & Sartor). Prior investigations (Meier et al., 2013; Jackson & Sartor, 2016; Jackson et al., 2008) have identified four subtypes of alcohol use as: (a) a stable low drinker subtype, characterized by nondependence over time; (b) a developmentally limited subtype, characterized by decreasing use over time; (c )a late onset subtype, characterized by increasing use over time; and (d) a persistent subtype, characterized by stably high use over time. Key questions remain regarding the correlates of these patterns of alcohol use. One of these key questions is why some adolescents discontinue problematic drinking after young adulthood (i.e., a developmentally limited subtype) whereas others continue and experience chronic problems into later adulthood (i.e., a persistent subtype). Likewise, it is equally important to understand why some non-problem drinkers in adolescence go on to develop problems later in life, but others do not. To understand these key questions, a developmental perspective that considers age normative contexts (e.g., marriage, parenthood) may be useful. However, research to date has overlooked this perspective and instead has largely focused on alcohol-specific behaviors as impacting alcohol use trajectory patterns, without taking into account one’s environment and development as well (Windle, 2020; Zheng et al., 2019; Brunborg et al., 2018). Moreover, empirical work investigating childhood effects on later adult outcomes, in addition to investigating more developmentally proximal influences, such as young adulthood effects, on later adult outcomes is limited. Thus, this current study will broaden our understanding of alcohol use trajectories by incorporating salient developmental influences in young adulthood and its effect on later alcohol use. In addition, this study will incorporate early life experiences in adolescence as well as more proximal developmental experiences in young adulthood to comprehensively understand alcohol use patterns into early midlife. We hypothesize that developmentally-salient adult role transitional factors(e.g., romantic relationship involvement, parenthood, employment) are likely to be systematically related to alcohol use subtypes. This hypothesis is grounded in literature on turning points and on the circumstances that set into motion behavioral or psychological changes. The developmental period of young adulthood (i.e., ages 18 to 25) marks a peak of alcohol use as well as major role transitions such as parenthood, marriage and career establishment. Further, prior investigations have found turning points in young adulthood playing an important role in alcohol use. For example, in young adulthood being in a committed partnership (Barr et al., 2019), having a child (Little et al., 2009) and educational attainment (Bingham et al., 2005) are associated with reductions in alcohol use. A second key question that has received little attention in the empirical literature is whether and how alcohol subtypes are associated with health outcomes. Prior literature has found different subtypes are characterized by unique adult outcomes (Meirer et al., 2013; Maggs & Schulenberg, 2004). For example, across literature alcohol use patterns exhibited in the persistent subtype are characterized by the highest levels of risk for a host of poor health outcomes in adulthood, such as depression, anxiety disorders,substance use problems, eating changes and somatic symptoms . Further, in contrast to individuals falling under persistent subtype, individuals under the developmentally limited subtype exhibit a significant improvement of health outcomes into adulthood (Meirer et al., 2013). In other words, the developmentally limited subtype is characterized by a different pattern of outcomes in comparison to the persistent subtype exhibited in adulthood, where poor outcomes are illustrated in adolescence but improve across development. Based on prior research, four trajectory subtypes are hypothesized to be identified in growth mixture modeling (GMM) modeling. We will examine young adulthood transition factors among the four hypothesized alcohol subtypes. In addition, we will examine associations among alcohol subtypes identified in GMM analyses and subsequent health outcomes in early midlife. Investigating unique young adulthood transition factors within alcohol subtypes would contribute to our understanding of factors influencing the divergence of alcohol use patterns across development. Further, investigating associations between alcohol subtypes and health outcomes would provide insight into targeted prevention and intervention efforts. The primary aim, using a population-based sample from age 16 to 35, is to examine key transition factors in young adulthood within the four hypothesized alcohol subtypes and to examine associations among the alcohol subtypes identified and early midlife health outcomes.

The wavefunctional in quantum gravity gives an amplitude for 3-geometries and matter fields. The four-space is usually recovered in a semiclassical approximation where the gravity variables are taken to oscillate rapidly compared to matter variables; this recovers the Schrodinger evolution for the matter. We examine turning points in the gravity variables where this approximation appears to be troublesome. We investigate the effect of such a turning point on the matter wavefunction, in simple quantum mechanical models and in a closed minisuperspace cosmology. We find that after evolving sufficiently far from the turning point the matter wavefunction recovers to a form close to that predicted by the semiclassical approximation, and we compute the leading correction (from `backreaction') in a simple model. We also show how turning points can appear in the gravitational sector in dilaton gravity. We give some remarks on the behavior of the wavefunctional in the vicinity of turning points in the context of dilaton gravity black holes.

Commodity prices depend on supply and demand. With an uneven distribution of resources, prices are high at locations starved of commodity and low where it is abundant. We introduce an agent-based model in which agents set their prices to maximize profit. At steady state, the market self-organizes into three groups: excess producers, consumers, and balanced agents. When resources are scarce, prices rise sharply at a turning point due to the disappearance of excess producers. Market data of commodities provide evidence of turning points for essential commodities, as well as a yield point for non-essential ones.

Turning Points is a New American Schools design for comprehensive middle school reform coordinated by the Center for Collaborative Education (CCE) in Boston Massachusetts. It focuses on creating a professional collaborative culture and using data-based inquiry to improve teaching and learning for all students. Turning Points seeks to create high-performing schools, especially those serving high percentages of low-income students and students of color. The design is driven by one overarching goal--ensuring success for every student. Based on twelve years of research and practice in urban, rural, and suburban middle schools across the country, Turning Points helps middle schools to strengthen their academic core and to create caring and challenging learning communities that meet the needs of young adolescents. The design grew out of the seminal "Turning Points" report issued by the Carnegie Corporation in 1989, which concentrated on the considerable risks adolescents face as they reach the "turning point" between childhood and adulthood.

Developing a course for online study by off-campus students requires a major change of approach to teaching and learning. This study outlines the constructivist theoretical basis and the approach to teaching applied in the development of a humanities course. The study includes analysis of the turning points in the students' learning as identified in asynchronous discussion postings and evaluation feedback from a post-course questionnaire. High school dropout is commonly seen as the result of a long-term process of failure and disengagement. As useful as it is, this view has obscured the heterogeneity of pathways leading to dropout. Research suggests, for instance, that some students leave school not as a result of protracted life difficulties but in response to situations that emerge late in their schooling careers, such as health problems or severe peer victimization. Conversely, others with a history of early difficulties persevere when their circumstances improve during high school. Thus, an adequate understanding of why and when students drop out requires a consideration of both long-term vulnerabilities and proximal disruptive events and contingencies. The goal of this review is to integrate long-term and immediate determinants of dropout by proposing a stress process, life course model of dropout. This model is also helpful for understanding how the determinants of dropout vary across socioeconomic conditions and geographical and historical contexts.

This open access book examines how families and other social institutions interact to shape outcomes over the life course. It considers how to use research evidence to reduce social disadvantage through translation of evidence to support public policies and programs. The chapters focus on key life course stages such as early child development, adolescence, emerging adulthood, parenting, marriage, relationships and ageing, as well as examining experiences and outcomes for selected social groups such as Indigenous children, migrants and refugees, and gay, lesbian and bisexual groups. The book presents evidence using high-quality and recent data. With a focus on Australia, the volume provides new insights into how context shapes life course pathways and outcomes and a contrast to work that typically focuses on Europe and the United States. It will be of value to anyone interested in understanding how family background and life course pathways influence social disadvantage.

Quantum corrections to Thomas-Fermi (TF) theory are investigated for noninteracting one-dimensional fermions with known uniform semiclassical approximations to the density and kinetic energy. Their structure is analyzed, and contributions from distinct phase space regions (classically-allowed versus forbidden at the Fermi energy) are derived analytically. Universal formulas are derived for both particle numbers and energy components in each region. For example, in the semiclassical limit, exactly 1/(6\pi3^{1/2}) of a particle leaks into the evanescent region beyond a turning point. The correct normalization of semiclassical densities is proven analytically in the semiclassical limit. Energies and densities are tested numerically in a variety of one-dimensional potentials, especially in the limit where TF theory becomes exact. The subtle relation between the pointwise accuracy of the semiclassical approximation and integrated expectation values is explored. The limitations of the semiclassical formulas are also investigated when the potential varies too rapidly. The approximations are shown to work for multiple wells, except right at the mid-phase point of the evanescent regions. The implications for density functional approximations are discussed.

Matt Atkinson has worked as a ranger at both the Gettysburg and Vicksburg national military parks. He compared those two 1863 campaigns as turning points in the Civil War and explored why Gettysburg looms larger in historical memory than western theater battles such as Vicksburg.
