5ERIC ED423842: Creating Electronic Learning Environments: Games, Flow, And The User Interface.

By

A difficult task in creating rich, exploratory interactive learning environments is building an environment that is truly engaging. Engagement can be defined as the nexus of intrinsic knowledge and/or interest and external stimuli that promote the initial interest in, and continued use of a computer-based learning environment. Complete and total involvement in a given task is described by Csikszentmihalyi's Flow Theory. Flow Theory defines the difference between enjoyment and pleasure; an optimal experience is more of a manifestation of the former. The following elements of flow are manifested in computer games and learning environments: (1) task that can be completed; (2) ability to concentrate on task; (3) task has clear goals; (4) task provides immediate feedback; (5) deep but effortless involvement; (6) exercising a sense of control over actions; (7) concern for self disappears during flow, but sense of self is stronger after flow activity; and (8) sense of duration of time is altered. The quality of multimedia assets such as images, sounds, and animations, are a key factor in interesting users in a computer game; this is an important issue in the design and development of educational software. A table shows the relationships among flow, games, and design of computer-based learning environments. Contains 14 references. (AEF)

7Allowing The Advantaged User In A Network Centric System To Get Through The Disadvantaged Interface

By

Networks and network centric systems are a technology and industry that is growing and evolving daily. These systems play an integral part in most companies, industries, organizations, and governments. The United States Navy uses networks and network centric systems in multiple facets of their daily and long term operations. Whether on ships, submarines, aircraft, or land based facilities, the Navy has implemented network centric systems to take advantage of their processing abilities, organizational structure, information sharing and other benefits. Among these complex network centric systems exist interfaces. These interfaces often present complications and challenges that prevent key personnel from participating in information sharing and data transmissions, and that often hinder mission success. By taking a systems engineering approach to finding, isolating and categorizing the factors that create these interface complications, a solution or work around to these factors can be readily implemented. This study uses a systems engineering approach to identify those factors that cause disadvantaged interfaces within network centric systems and provides recommendations to these challenges so that advantaged users, those with real-time mission critical information, of network centric systems can maintain adequate use of their respective network centric systems for continued mission success.

11Are We Ready To Fulfil A Request Made By An App? Using The User-interface Dialog To Increase The Likelihood Of Getting Vaccinated Against Influenza.

By

The present study is a continuation of the research on the user-interface dialog (using the FLORA app) and its effectiveness compared to the monolog condition in increasing the frequency of influenza vaccination (https://osf.io/c4fx3). This time, we want to check whether adding a request for vaccination at the end of the conversation between the user and the interface can increase the respondents' estimated likelihood of getting vaccinated in the future.

12NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940011311: User's Manual For The HYPGEN Hyperbolic Grid Generator And The HGUI Graphical User Interface

By

The HYPGEN program is used to generate a 3-D volume grid over a user-supplied single-block surface grid. This is accomplished by solving the 3-D hyperbolic grid generation equations consisting of two orthogonality relations and one cell volume constraint. In this user manual, the required input files and parameters and output files are described. Guidelines on how to select the input parameters are given. Illustrated examples are provided showing a variety of topologies and geometries that can be treated. HYPGEN can be used in stand-alone mode as a batch program or it can be called from within a graphical user interface HGUI that runs on Silicon Graphics workstations. This user manual provides a description of the menus, buttons, sliders, and typein fields in HGUI for users to enter the parameters needed to run HYPGEN. Instructions are given on how to configure the interface to allow HYPGEN to run either locally or on a faster remote machine through the use of shell scripts on UNIX operating systems. The volume grid generated is copied back to the local machine for visualization using a built-in hook to PLOT3D.

13NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940018057: Integrating A Local Database Into The StarView Distributed User Interface

By

A distributed user interface to the Space Telescope Data Archive and Distribution Service (DADS) known as StarView is being developed. The DADS architecture consists of the data archive as well as a relational database catalog describing the archive. StarView is a client/server system in which the user interface is the front-end client to the DADS catalog and archive servers. Users query the DADS catalog from the StarView interface. Query commands are transmitted via a network and evaluated by the database. The results are returned via the network and are displayed on StarView forms. Based on the results, users decide which data sets to retrieve from the DADS archive. Archive requests are packaged by StarView and sent to DADS, which returns the requested data sets to the users. The advantages of distributed client/server user interfaces over traditional one-machine systems are well known. Since users run software on machines separate from the database, the overall client response time is much faster. Also, since the server is free to process only database requests, the database response time is much faster. Disadvantages inherent in this architecture are slow overall database access time due to the network delays, lack of a 'get previous row' command, and that refinements of a previously issued query must be submitted to the database server, even though the domain of values have already been returned by the previous query. This architecture also does not allow users to cross correlate DADS catalog data with other catalogs. Clearly, a distributed user interface would be more powerful if it overcame these disadvantages. A local database is being integrated into StarView to overcome these disadvantages. When a query is made through a StarView form, which is often composed of fields from multiple tables, it is translated to an SQL query and issued to the DADS catalog. At the same time, a local database table is created to contain the resulting rows of the query. The returned rows are displayed on the form as well as inserted into the local database table. Identical results are produced by reissuing the query to either the DADS catalog or to the local table. Relational databases do not provide a 'get previous row' function because of the inherent complexity of retrieving previous rows of multiple-table joins. However, since this function is easily implemented on a single table, StarView uses the local table to retrieve the previous row. Also, StarView issues subsequent query refinements to the local table instead of the DADS catalog, eliminating the network transmission overhead. Finally, other catalogs can be imported into the local database for cross correlation with local tables. Overall, it is believe that this is a more powerful architecture for distributed, database user interfaces.

16A Graphical User Interface For The Low Cost Combat Direction System

By

A technology vacuum exists in the small combatant and support ship units of the U.S. Navy. Newer combatant vessels are typically outfitted with state of the art Combat Direction and information processing systems, while their older sisters in the fleet are still using manual method to do the same tasks. These shipboard tasks, which include contact management, moving geometry calculations, intelligence compilation, area planning and navigation, are all performed manually on-board older fleet units. These manual methods are extremely slow, are subject to potentially disastrous errors and require intensive training to perform correctly. The current level of computer technology allows the automation of these tasks, providing an instant solution to the user, with a far smaller error rate than could be expected of manual methods. The prime objective of this thesis, The Low Cost Combat Direction System (LCCDS) User Interface, is to define the functional goals, constraints and general system design of a graphical user interface suitable for use aboard U.S. Navy vessels. Particular emphasis is placed on the design and implementation of a graphical display system, in the Ada programming language, necessary to interface the user to the capabilities of the LCCDS as a whole.

17DTIC ADP023802: EzHPC: Adopting A Program-wide, User-centered Design Approach To The EzHPC User Interface

By

The Engineer Research and Development Center Major Shared Resource Center (ERDC MSRC) has been tasked by the Department of Defense (DoD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) to adopt a program-wide design for the development of the recently introduced ezHPC user interface. The purpose of ezHPC is to provide all HPCMP users intuitive, efficient access to high performance computing (HPC) resources needed in their regular course of work. At the core of user-centered design is an emphasis on fully understanding HPC users and their work environment, enabling support for user needs, not developer concerns, to drive the design process. Fulfilling this goal requires the use of a variety of methods from the field of usability engineering For ezHPC, methods have included to date (1) inclusion of users as part of the design team, (2) a facilitated focus group session, (3) a usability walkthrough, (4) a usability evaluation, and (5) rapid prototyping. In adherence to user-centered design, a user group (UG) was formed to serve as participants in the design of the ezHPC software. ezHPC UG members participated in a recent workshop for the purpose of assessing and improving the usability of the program-wide version of ezHPC. Results are currently being used to guide the new design of the ezHPC interface using rapid prototyping. Prototypes are under development for regular reviews by the UG, followed by iterative refinement. This direct early involvement of users ensures more responsive, user-centered interfaces. Formal, large-scale usability evaluations are expected in the latter half of the software cycle.

By

A Friendly Interface to a Relational Algebra Database System was created on the Universal Relation concept. This concept allows the user to relate to the total database as a single relation. The user inputs a query using attributes of the single relation. The interface then creates the Universal Relation by way of relational algebra JOINs. Tuples of this relation are SELECTed according to constraints placed on attributes in the query (i.e. CITY = NEW YORK), and a PROJECTion of attributes desired is made from the result. Limitations of the interface are: 1. All relations in the database must be JOINable without data loss. 2. The query must start with a verb. (Author)

25DTIC ADA250095: Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP): The User Interface For The Fabrication Module Of The Rapid Design System

By

The Rapid Design System (RDS) is a feature based design, fabrication, and inspection system. Research and development of the RDS has been sponsored by the United States Air Force. The Fabrication Planning (FP) Module of the RDS is being developed by the University of Dayton. The FP module automatically creates a process plan for machining a metal part. The research addressed herein deals with the User Interface for the review and modification of a process plan. The Fabrication Planning Module automatically creates a plan using information from the Feature Based Design Environment (FBDE) of the RDS. It integrates this information with the information received from a program/database called MetCAPP(Tm). The process plan is created in a series of steps: feature translation, feature sequencing, setup generation, and operations generation. The purpose of the Planning Window and User Interface is to give a designer, machinists, or process planner the ability to automatically generate and manipulate a complete process plan.

By

The Naval Research Laboratory has been involved in research and development efforts in the areas of (1) automated routing of strike aircraft [ 1] (2) advanced 3D displays and interaction technologies, and (3) collaboration tools and protocols. This research has been conducted in order to advance the state of the art in each technology area, particularly for military command and control applications. This paper will concentrate on the research conducted in item (2), the results of which been incorporated in the STrike Optimized Mission Planning Module, STOMPM. The STOMPM testbed allows the user to load various terrain data, create strike related routing scenarios consisting of threats and targets, test the various routing algorithms and assess their performance, and visualize this information and interact with it in a natural setting. Two versions of STOMPM currently exist, version 1.0 (v1.O) and version 2.0 (v2.0). The STOMPM v1.O was primarily developed to test auto-routing technology, and does not include technology needed to run on advanced displays such as the Virtual Reality Responsive WorkBench, VRRWB (i.e ., STOMPM v1.O operates best on a computer monitor with a mouse/menu interface). The STOMPM v2.0 also includes autorouting technology (specifically autorouting algorithms which take into consideration fuel and tum constraints which are not included in STOMPM -v1 .0), but also includes a user interface that is well suited to running on more advanced displays such as the workbench. This paper will provide a high level description of both versions of the STOMPM testbed. Foil owing this discussion, we will describe state-of-the-art technologies in visualization, advanced displays and scene interaction capabilities that have been incorporated within STOMPM v2.0. We will conclude with a discussion of the advantages associated with the use of the workbench and also the interface that has been developed within STOMPM for the workbench.

28NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870014665: The Development Of A Prototype Intelligent User Interface Subsystem For NASA's Scientific Database Systems

By

The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has initiated an Intelligent Data Management (IDM) research effort which has as one of its components the development of an Intelligent User Interface (IUI).The intent of the latter is to develop a friendly and intelligent user interface service that is based on expert systems and natural language processing technologies. The purpose is to support the large number of potential scientific and engineering users presently having need of space and land related research and technical data but who have little or no experience in query languages or understanding of the information content or architecture of the databases involved. This technical memorandum presents prototype Intelligent User Interface Subsystem (IUIS) using the Crustal Dynamics Project Database as a test bed for the implementation of the CRUDDES (Crustal Dynamics Expert System). The knowledge base has more than 200 rules and represents a single application view and the architectural view. Operational performance using CRUDDES has allowed nondatabase users to obtain useful information from the database previously accessible only to an expert database user or the database designer.

29NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20100018593: Overview Of The Graphical User Interface For The GERM Code (GCR Event-Based Risk Model

By

The descriptions of biophysical events from heavy ions are of interest in radiobiology, cancer therapy, and space exploration. The biophysical description of the passage of heavy ions in tissue and shielding materials is best described by a stochastic approach that includes both ion track structure and nuclear interactions. A new computer model called the GCR Event-based Risk Model (GERM) code was developed for the description of biophysical events from heavy ion beams at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL). The GERM code calculates basic physical and biophysical quantities of high-energy protons and heavy ions that have been studied at NSRL for the purpose of simulating space radiobiological effects. For mono-energetic beams, the code evaluates the linear-energy transfer (LET), range (R), and absorption in tissue equivalent material for a given Charge (Z), Mass Number (A) and kinetic energy (E) of an ion. In addition, a set of biophysical properties are evaluated such as the Poisson distribution of ion or delta-ray hits for a specified cellular area, cell survival curves, and mutation and tumor probabilities. The GERM code also calculates the radiation transport of the beam line for either a fixed number of user-specified depths or at multiple positions along the Bragg curve of the particle. The contributions from primary ion and nuclear secondaries are evaluated. The GERM code accounts for the major nuclear interaction processes of importance for describing heavy ion beams, including nuclear fragmentation, elastic scattering, and knockout-cascade processes by using the quantum multiple scattering fragmentation (QMSFRG) model. The QMSFRG model has been shown to be in excellent agreement with available experimental data for nuclear fragmentation cross sections, and has been used by the GERM code for application to thick target experiments. The GERM code provides scientists participating in NSRL experiments with the data needed for the interpretation of their experiments, including the ability to model the beam line, the shielding of samples and sample holders, and the estimates of basic physical and biological outputs of the designed experiments. We present an overview of the GERM code GUI, as well as providing training applications.

By

The High Resolution Profiler (HRP) is one of the only oceanographic instruments that is capable of measuring turbulent velocity and temperature fluctuations in the abyssal ocean. It is a unique device, and consequently specialized communications, data conversion and analysis software are employed to examine the data it collects. This document describes a major upgrade of the software and hardware systems used to process data from the HRP. The bulk of the conversion occurred in 1996 prior to the Brazil Basin Tracer Release Experiment (BBTRE). During the upgrade process, a Graphical User Interface (GUI) was designed and implemented for accomplishing routine HRP data processing tasks.

41Design Module For Speech Recognition Graphical User Interface Browser To Supports The Web Speech Applications

By

The web speech API has made it possible to integrate audio data into web applications and make it a unique experience for all customers and users of modern applications. The website can only be accessed through devices equipped with a which stands for graphical user interface (GUI) and screen. For this to be done, there must be a physical attraction with such devices. This paper presents speech recognition using a web browser (SRWB) which permits browsing or surfing the internet with the use of a standard voice-only and vocal user interface (VUL) development. The SRWB system input from the users in form of vocal commands and covers these voice commands to HTTP requests. The SRWB system will send the voice commands to the web server for processing purposes and when the processing is done, the converted or translated HTTP response is outputted to the end-users in a voice format made audible with the attached loudspeakers. SAPI, developed by Microsoft, allows the use of SRWB in Windows applications. The algorithm is implemented by the system to achieve its goal for web content, classifying, analyzing, and sending important parts of web pages back to the end-user.

42Speech User Interface For Visually Impaired To Access The Synoptic Form Of Web Data

By

The vast information available in the web data is mostly inaccessible for blind and visually impaired since most information retrieval systems do not cater to their needs. The retrieval of the relevant information from multiple web documents in a synoptic form can be highly beneficial. A system with speech user interface for information retrieval of web-data in summarized form was developed. The system is speaker-independent and uses a domain specific language model. Query is formulated based on user's input which can be either in text or in voice form. The query is processed by a search engine, like Google, and a fixed number of relevant web documents are parsed and the textual content is extracted from them. This textual content is summarized and its corresponding speech along with the text is presented to the user. Through this method an enhanced solution which offers a natural and user-friendly way of communication for visually-impaired people is intended. The system is easy to be implemented in real time and its functioning is simple as compared to other existing systems.
