This year's Reith Lecturer is American theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer. Professor of Physics at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, he has been described as the \"father of the atomic bomb\" for his role in the Manhattan Project while Director of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory between 1943-45. In his Reith lectures entitled 'Science and the Common Understanding', he examines the impact of quantum and atomic theory on society.In his sixth and final lecture entitled 'The Sciences and Man's Community', Professor Oppenheimer explains how the \"House of Science\" helps us to understand the underlying profundities of the earth and our lives. He draws parallels between the construction of human society and the atom: each man is dependent on the next, and through the power of the collective, Man's power grows with the shared knowledge of individuals.

The MIT EECS department has long been a source of interdisciplinary research, however in recent years, the number of faculty members who have expanded their research portfolios to include aspects from the life sciences has risen dramatically. This trend is a perfect illustration of the department’s tag line: “EECS is everywhere” – our view that EECS modes of thinking are important tools in tackling many different domains of investigation. We will briefly highlight selected examples of EECS influences on life science problems, including computational biology algorithms, synthetic biology methods, nanodevices for therapy delivery, “lab on a chip” devices, computer-assisted surgery, novel medical sensors, medical image analysis methods for disease tracking, prosthetic devices, and others. ©2010 Microsoft Corporation. Dr. von Braun, Director of the Marshall Space Flight Center, spoke of the progress in the Saturn Program during his appearance before the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences. He was accompanied by Dr. Robert C. Seamans, Jr., Associate Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

There is an ongoing explosion in the amount and complexity of data collected by social and health scientists. Many of these are temporal data that describe time-evolving populations of individual people and their relationships between each other. Traditional training in social and health sciences does not contain a ‘data management’ course, and consequently most social and health scientists are under prepared to properly manage, manipulate, and archive the data that they collect. This has led to significant challenges and provides an opportunity to bring modern data management practices into the main stream of social and health sciences. This presentation will describe the growing use of relational databases: 1) in long-term studies of social and health issues in the developing world, 2) in building mathematical/computational models of human populations, 3) in the ‘mining’ and analysis of longitudinal population-based data, and 4) in the presentation and dissemination of those data. The presentation will end with a discussion of what may be needed to encourage social and health scientists to take more interest in data management and adopt more modern methods of managing their data. ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. Women do not contribute to the arts, sciences, and humanities commensurate with their talents and potential nor in proportion to the opportunities available to them. This study investigated variables or combinations of variables which best predict lower achievement and career motivation in women: self-esteem, fear of success, vicarious achievement ethic, home-career conflict, work-discrimination beliefs, sex-role orientation, risk-taking behavior, social structure, and perception of parents. A cross-cultural study was conducted of subjects drawn from various ethnic and socioeconomic subcultures in the United States and Iran. The subjects represent three age groups of women and men: high school, college, and women returning to college after an absence of at least five years. Data analysis of the nine predictor variables indicates that the impact of societal changes (legal, attitudinal, and social) has not yet removed the factors that are inhibiting women's achievement and career motivation. Responses were received from nine students. Analysis indicated that all respondents were in school, college, or a training program; eight respondents were attending Michigan institutions; students were majoring in a variety of fields; most respondents planned to pursue additional degrees; a third of respondents reported no serious educational problems; and students reported a variety of long term professional goals. Most respondents agreed that the CAS program had provided good preparation for college and a creative/motivational environment. Appendices include the questionnaire and a tabulation of responses to each question. Additional material includes program guides for the CAS for the years 1993-94 and 1994-95. The guides address program philosophy; student eligibility; and areas of specialization available at CAS including dance, global studies, language arts, math/science, theatre, visual arts, and voice/keyboard. The program's counseling service, living arts program, and media center are also described. Recommended course equivalencies and a summary of recent program highlights complete the guides. (DB)

The main aim of the study is to explore the role of self-assessment in EFL learning in developing lifelong language learning skills and in furthering the development of more comprehensive and thereby fairer assessment practices. The study explores how students perceived their own general and specific writing abilities in relation to syllabus goals and whether these perceptions are affected by self-assessment practices. The study is based on the theory that metacognitive skills are important for the development of autonomous learning skills. Two teachers and four groups of Swedish upper secondary students participated in the study during one school year. Using grades, students self-assessed the results of two written assignments. The teachers and eight student groups were also interviewed about their experiences. The results showed that at a group level the students were well able to assess their general writing results. At the individual level the results were more variable, partly depending on the type of writing activity assessed and the amount of self-assessment practice the students had had. The students and teachers were positive to the incorporation of self-assessment activities in the EFL writing classroom and saw it as a transferable skill that underpins lifelong learning in other subject areas. Self-assessment was considered as contributing valuable additional information to ordinary tutoring and testing. The implications are that syllabus goals that encourage student responsibility and autonomy are viable and realistic but students need to practice self-assessment to become adept at employing the approach. The results of a questionnaire sent to the users of the Health Sciences Information Service (HSIS) at the University of Kentucky are summarized by this report. Several observations were made from the data presented: (1) when a dependable information service is organized it gets used; (2) the number of individuals who report the use of HSIS through their libraries of first contact leads to the belief that a central regional service should be service given to libraries more than to indivuduals; (3) only five individuals responded negatively about the value of HSIS to them; (4) that half the respondents were not physicians indicates that medical library systems have an obligation to make their services accessible to other than physicians; and (5) the respondents' stating that the main value of HSIS is the provision of journal articles indicates that felt needs for access to journal materials are far from met through the existing library organizations.
