The reader will find herein a collection of unsolved problems in  mathematics and the physical sciences. Theoretical and experimental domains have each been given consideration. The authors have taken a liberal approach in their selection of problems and questions, and have not shied away from what might otherwise be called speculative, in order to enhance the opportunities for scientific discovery.

The present collection of problems is based on these courses and amplifies them considerably. Besides the classical boundary value problems, we have ineluded a large number of boundary value problems that have only generalized solutions. Solution of these requires using the methods and results of various branches of modern analysis. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, the US government set in motion a broad set of measures whose aim was to screen foreign applicants for entrance into the US, to try to identify those who it was felt might attempt to carry out further attacks. Since the 2001-02 academic year had already begun in most schools, and since it took time for these new measures to be put in place, the first impact was on foreign students applying for entry in the Fall of 2002. Our initial survey of graduate physics departments on visa issues was conducted in January and February of 2003, and asked departments to recount the experience of the international students they had accepted the previous Fall. We heard from 75% of all US graduate physics departments, and found that visa difficulties were widespread. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)

Unlike what some physicists and graduate students used to think, that physics science has come to the point that the only improvement needed is merely like adding more numbers in decimal place for the masses of elementary particles or gravitational constant, there is a number of unsolved problems in this field that may require that the whole theory shall be reassessed. In the present article we discuss thirty of those unsolved problems and their likely implications. In the first section we will discuss some well-known problems in cosmology and particle physics, and then other unsolved problems will be discussed in next section.

We present the first simulations within an effective theory of structure formation (ETHOS), which includes the effect of interactions between dark matter and dark radiation on the linear initial power spectrum and dark matter self-interactions during non-linear structure formation. We simulate a Milky Way-like halo in four different dark matter models and the cold dark matter case. Our highest resolution simulation has a particle mass of $2.8\times 10^4\,{\rm M}_\odot$ and a softening length of $72.4\,{\rm pc}$. We demonstrate that all alternative models have only a negligible impact on large scale structure formation. On galactic scales, however, the models significantly affect the structure and abundance of subhaloes due to the combined effects of small scale primordial damping in the power spectrum and late time self-interactions. We derive an analytic mapping from the primordial damping scale in the power spectrum to the cutoff scale in the halo mass function and the kinetic decoupling temperature. We demonstrate that certain models within this extended effective framework that can alleviate the too-big-to-fail and missing satellite problems simultaneously, and possibly the core-cusp problem. The primordial power spectrum cutoff of our models naturally creates a diversity in the circular velocity profiles, which is larger than that found for cold dark matter simulations. We show that the parameter space of models can be constrained by contrasting model predictions to astrophysical observations. For example, some models may be challenged by the missing satellite problem if baryonic processes were to be included and even over-solve the too-big-to-fail problem; thus ruling them out.

Strelkov (1905-1974) were no longer able to take part in the expansion and modernization of this book. The collection has been supplemented with problems by D. V. Sivukhin, which for a number of years were proposed for solution to students of the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute. A number of new problems were presented by V. L. Ginzburg, as well as S. P. Strelkov's colleagues, V. I. Shmalgauzen and A. A. Kharlamov. The new 5 11 "Relativistic Electrodynamics" was written by the untimely deceased V. A. Several problems were presented by V.L. Ginzburg. Problems 37, 131, 189, 338, 416 were selected from materials sent by Professor ter Haar of Oxford University during the preparation of the English edition of this problem book . The remaining problems were added by me, some of them were borrowed (often in a revised form) from the second volume of my "General Course of Physics". Other problems are published for the first time. Many of them were offered to students of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology . The ideas for some of these problems belong to the teachers of the Physics Department of the same institute. The authors of the problem book express their deep gratitude to all those who contributed to the improvement and expansion of this work.   The book uses continuous numbering of formulas for each problem, and the beginning of the numbering can be given in the problem statement, and the continuation in the answer (for example, formulas (269.1) - (269.3) are given in the problem statement 269, and formulas (269.4) - (269.6) - in the answer to this problem). The problem book is intended for students and teachers of physics departments of universities, physical-technical institutes and all other higher educational institutions where physics is the main discipline. The data processing of MAGSAT investigator B test tapes and data tapes, and tapes of selected data on 15 magnetically quiet days is reported. The 1980 World Chart spherical model was compared with the MAGSAT (3/80) and MAGSAT vector data were used in the models. An article on modelling the geomagnetic field using satellite data is included.

The objective of this research was to make use of a physically based social systems model, developed earlier, to study the determinants of city sizes and their national interactions. In particular, information on the role of a transportation systems in affecting city sizes was required. In this second part, the relation between the urban settlements and a potential mapping that is related to the land (its population density, material and energy resources, activities, products, and consumption) is outlined. The dependence of the urban settlement distribution on long-distance international trade is discussed. The emergence of a new major social institution, the large corporation which is competitive with the urban settlement, is discussed. The socio-economic effects of transportation systems, and their modernization is described. (Author)

This document consists of four units. The first of these views calculus applications to work, area, and distance problems. It is designed to help students gain experience in: 1) computing limits of Riemann sums; 2) computing definite integrals; and 3) solving elementary area, distance, and work problems by integration. The second module views calculus applications to atmospheric pressure. The material is geared to aid pupil understanding of the application of calculus to construct a mathematical model of the atmosphere. The third unit covers applications of multivariate calculus to physics. The user is expected to learn how to compute the Gradient, and to be able to use the Gradient to solve certain practical problems involving steepest ascent. The final module covers calculus applications to physics. The material is designed to instruct pupils how to: 1) be able to handle motion problems in polar coordinates, especially those concerning gravitational interaction; 2) state the relationships between Kepler's Laws and the Inverse Square Law; and 3) discuss the history and thought going into scientific development of an idea and the interaction between experiment and theory, at least in the context of planetary motion. All units include exercises with solutions; the first, third, and fourth provide model exams with answers. (MP)

Progress in the harmonic analysis of MAGSAT data is reported. Single-day data sets were subdivided into information on the sunrise side of the Earth and information on the sunset side of the Earth. Data for the main and external fields each demonstrate a clear and consistent systematic difference between the sets of data which was determined to be, due to ionospheric currents which differ from the sunset to the sunrise terminator. A toroidal field was analyzed for and determined to be an apparent toroidal field resulting from electric currents concentrated in the two terminators. Progressive elimination of auroral zone data demonstrates that the information presented does not arise from complications due to Birkeland currents.

Quasicrystals have intrigued and stimulated research in a large number of disciplines. Mathematicians, physicists, chemists, metallurgists and materials scientists have found in them a fertile ground for new insights and discoveries. In the quarter century that has ensued since the publication of the experimental observation of a quasiperiodic Al-Mn alloy \cite{shecht}, many different kinds of quasiperiodic alloys have been manufactured and studied. The physical properties of quasicrystals are no less interesting than the unusual structural properties that led to their discovery in 1984. In this review, I present some of the properties that characterize quasicrystals, briefly discuss several types of theories that have been put forward, and describe some new behaviors that might be investigated by experiment.

This textbook issue has been prepared to accompany later editions, and includes complete reference to all the problems and practical questions contained in Steele's "Popular Physics," "Popular Chemistry," "Hygienic Physiology," and "New Descriptive Astronomy."

Advanced technology helps educational institutes to improve student learning performance and outcomes. In this study, our aim is to measure and assess student engagement and collaborative learning in engineering classes when using online technology in solving physics problems. The interactive response system used in this study is a collaborative learning tool that allows teachers to monitor their students' response and progress in real time. Our results indicated that students have highly positive attitude toward using the interactive response system as a tool in education in order to improve collaborative learning and student engagement in classes. Consequently, student-learning performance has been improved considerably, and technology was successfully incorporated in engineering classes.

This article discusses some problems of mechanics and physics that lead to the solution of ordinary differential equations. The calculation of currents and voltages in electrical circuits using differential equations is a classic method for calculating circuits in electrical engineering. Mathematical analysis fully realizes itself in applied problems through differential equations.

Quiet-day data from MAGSAT were examined for effects which might test the validity of Maxwell's equations. Both external and toroidal fields which might represent a violation of the equations appear to exist, well within the associated errors. The external field might be associated with the ring current, and varies of a time-scale of one day or less. Its orientation is parallel to the geomagnetic dipole. The toriodal field can be confused with an orientation in error (in yaw). It the toroidal field really exists, its can be related to either ionospheric currents, or to toroidal fields in the Earth's core in accordance with Einstein's unified field theory, or to both.

The nucleus of 208Pb -- a system that is 18 order of magnitudes smaller and 55 orders of magnitude lighter than a neutron star -- may be used as a miniature surrogate to establish important correlations between its neutron skin and several neutron-star properties. Indeed, a nearly model-independent correlation develops between the neutron skin of 208Pb and the liquid-to-solid transition density in a neutron star. Further, we illustrate how a measurement of the neutron skin in 208Pb may be used to place important constraints on the cooling mechanism operating in neutron stars and may help elucidate the existence of quarks stars.

A SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE MEANS OF SOLVING A NUMBER OF BOUNDARY PROBLEMS OF MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS BY THE COLLOCATION METHOD IS PRESENTED. QUESTIONS CONCERNING EXISTENCE, AND CONVERGENCE OF APPROXIMATE SOLUTIONS FOUND WITH THIS METHOD ARE DISCUSSED. ESTIMATES OF THE SPEED OF CONVERGENCE OF APPROXIMATE SOLUTIONS TO THE EXACT SOLUTION ARE INCLUDED.

This article describes a model of Unitary Quantum Field theory where the particle is represented as a wave packet. The frequency dispersion equation is chosen so that the packet periodically appears and disappears without form changings. The envelope of the process is identified with a conventional wave function. Equation of such a field is nonlinear and relativistically invariant. With proper adjustments, they are reduced to Dirac, Schrödinger and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. A number of new experimental effects have been predicted both for high and low energies.

This study explored high school students' collaborative efforts in solving qualitative physics problems. It aimed to investigate whether and how confronting students with varying views help to improve their problem solving skills and develop better understanding of the underlying physics concepts. The varying views were provided to 18 grade 12 students by requiring them (a) to work in dyads on the problems during which they had to consider and confront each other's ideas; and (b) to consider, in a feedback session, multiple solutions to each problem, comparing the solutions with their own and reflecting on their mistakes. The study adopted F. Marton's theory of the structure of awareness as its theoretical underpinning--that is, the varying views would bring to the students' focal awareness, and thus enable them to discern, the different critical aspects of the problem situations. This would help them to develop conceptual understanding. The results show that confronting students with varying views can have three positive effects: (a) it enhanced students' understanding and improved their problem solving skill; (b) it induced students to reflect not only on the object of learning but also spontaneously to consider their approach to learning physics; and (c) it enabled students to see things differently and to consider, and possibly adopt, a new approach to learning physics. Importantly, the findings lend support to Marton's emerging theory. The paper ends with a discussion of the shortcomings and the educational implications of the study. (Contains 24 references.)
