A meta-analysis (Verhage et al., 2016) examining 95 studies found that there is transmission of attachment representations from parents to their children and that this relation is partially explained by differences in parental sensitivity. However, even after examining 95 studies, the authors also had to conclude, like their predecessor (Van IJzendoorn, 1995) who meta-analyzed 19 studies two decades ago, that there is a transmission gap between parental attachment representations and child attachment, i.e., the concordance between parents’ and children’s attachment cannot be fully explained by observed parental behavior. More recent and unpublished studies reported weaker effect sizes for transmission and the transmission was moderated by a number of factors, such as psychosocial risks and the age of the children. Verhage et al. (2016) speculate that “some children might be more resilient against negative influences”. Inspired by this speculation, we will investigate whether children’s differential susceptibility (to parenting) is a moderating factor (partly) explaining the transmission gap. According to the differential susceptibility hypothesis, children vary in how much they are affected by positive as well as negative parenting (Belsky, Bakermans-Kranenburg, & Van IJzendoorn, 2007; Belsky & Pluess, 2009; Ellis et al., 2011). Highly susceptible children shall, when exposed to adverse environments, show more psychological problems, but shall also flourish more when exposed to supportive environments. Less susceptible children shall be less affected by adverse or supportive environments. Using this hypothesis, we want to test parts of Verhage et al.’s (2016) model. Their theoretical model of intergenerational transmission of attachment will be investigated including child differential susceptibility factors and making use of the secure base script assessment of attachment representations in parents and children (see Figure 1). Besides sensitivity of the parent which has been found to be a mediator in previous research (Witte et al., under review), parental sensitive discipline might be an important mediator. When using sensitive discipline, parents employ non-coercive strategies such as distraction or explaining the rules to cope with difficult child behavior (Van IJzendoorn et al., 2022). Although related, parental sensitive discipline and parental sensitivity are distinct and complementary dimensions of parenting. Witte et al. (under review) found an association between parental attachment representations and parental sensitive discipline. Therefore, sensitive discipline might be a complementary mediator in the relation between the parent’s attachment representation and the parent-child attachment. We thus expand the model by Verhage et al. (2016) by adding sensitive discipline as a possible second mediator.

The experience-description gap, first formally described nearly two decades ago, captures a systematic difference in choice behavior based on how individuals learn about a lottery's payoff distribution (Barron & Erev, 2003; Hertwig et al., 2004). When individuals decide from description, their choices align with the fourfold pattern of prospect theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 2013): they overweight rare events and underweight common events; moreover, they seek risk in the loss domain, and avoid it in the gain domain. Conversely, when learning through experience, these patterns reverse: individuals underweight rare events and become risk-averse in the loss domain as well as risk-seeking in the gain domain (Barron & Erev, 2003; Hertwig et al., 2004). The extent to which agency influences this experience-description gap remains unclear. Previous literature has shown that individuals exhibit greater confidence in the chance of winning a lottery when they themselves can decide which lottery to play, thereby appearing more risk seeking (Langer, 1975). In addition, manifestations of two well-established cognitive distortions in gambing behavior, the near-miss effect* and the effect of personal control** , were found to be associated with activations of the brains reward system, increasing risk-taking behavior (Clark, 2010). Based on this research, we propose that having agency in sampling may enhance perceived control and involvement, leading to increased willingness to take risk in the gain domain. To explore the influence of agency on the experience-description gap in the gain domain, we designed an experiment where participants make choices from experience under two conditions. In the first condition, participants have agency—they freely sample outcomes and decide when to stop. In the second condition, conducted one week later, participants have to draw the same number of samples and experience the same outcomes in the same order as they did in the first session, but without the ability to stop at will. We hypothesize that preferences will differ based on whether participants had agency (operationalized by the possibility of self-determined stopping) during experience-based sampling or not (controlling for experienced frequencies and magnitudes of outcomes). Specifically, we hypothesize that participants will exhibit greater risk-seeking behavior when they have agency over the sampling process. This increased risk-seeking behavior will manifest in one or more of the following ways: A) Different probability distortion: Sampling with agency will result in less underweighting of small probabilities compared to sampling without agency. B) More risk-seeking behavior: Sampling with agency will result in a higher alpha value in the Constant Relative Risk Aversion (CRRA) value function, indicating a greater propensity to take risks. C) Both A) and B): Sampling with agency will result in both reduced underweighting of small probabilities and higher alpha values in the CRRA value function. We furthermore hypothesize that the influence of agency will be greater for males than females, as men are generally more agentic than women (Hsu et al. 2021). This study aims to clarify the role of agency in the experience-description gap and enhance our understanding of how control over information acquisition processes influences decision-making under risk. We use the same lotteries as in a previous study, where we established the description-experience gap. To maintain consistency and build on our previous findings, we invite the same participants to take part in this study. * The near-miss effect occurs when individuals perceive outcomes that are close to a win as more encouraging, even though they are technically losses. This can lead to increased motivation to continue gambling. ** The effect of personal control refers to the tendency of individuals to feel more confident and take greater risks when they believe they have control over the outcome of a game, even if this control is illusory.

The objective of this study was to examine the methods commonly employed in epidemiologic and biomedical research and to relate them to the methods traditionally used in the field of psychology. The intent of this report is to describe some of these methods and explain them in a clear and concise fashion. It is concluded that, despite the differences in terminology and frequent use of rates which are not found in psychology, the gap between biostatistics and psychological statistics is neither large nor complex. Because the methods of epidemiology, biostatistics, and psychology are based on common statistical principles, relatively few shifts in statistical thinking are required, other than an understanding of the terminology employed, for psychologists to attain a basic comprehension of epidemiologic findings.

The "Closing the Achievement Gap" series explores the Casey Foundation's education investments and presents stories, results, and lessons learned. This publication provides an in-depth look at Foundation support of community schools, including selected results and lessons learned. It also includes stories about one California school district's innovative parent engagement policy, the Harlem Children's Zone Practitioners Institute, parent organizing in Texas and Denver, and the Foundation's contributions to results measurement in the connections field. In today's funding environment, few programs can expect ongoing support from government agencies and foundations unless they can demonstrate that their services are achieving desired outcomes. Boards of directors, community members, and the people served also want to know if programs are getting results. The issue of results measurement can be thorny for school/community/family connections strategies, because it is difficult to define and demonstrate a causal link between program activities and improved student outcomes. To contribute to advancing meaningful results measurement among connections grantees, the Casey Foundation has invested roughly $600,000 in the development of results frameworks, reflection tools, and evaluation for connections programs. The "Brown v. Board of Education" decision of 1954 legally authorized equitable academic conditions and access for African-American students in the United States' public school systems. However, in actuality, Brown did not lead to substantial "de facto" changes in equity and access. The American public education system continues to confront wide disparity in the achievement of African-American students and their White counterparts due to racial discrimination. The disparity, commonly referred to as the academic achievement gap, has also given way to the emergence of racist education myths, such as: a) African-American students innately cannot learn; b) African-American students are incapable of competing academically with their White counterparts; and c) the academic achievement gap between the African-American and White student population is irreducible. In order to dispel these racially discriminatory myths, a new paradigm shift in public education in America must take place. This paradigm shift includes the immersion of diversity within both curricula and school policy. Such a shift would transform the predominantly one-culture curricula that is so detrimental to the academic achievement of African-American and other non-White students in an otherwise ethnically and racially diverse student population in the United States.

He recently wrote a piece for the Wall Street Journal arguing that political leaders and health experts have politicized the pandemic response by sending mixed messages, implementing hypocritical policies, and becoming distracted with areas of controversy rather than focusing efforts on more pragmatic goals. "Paterson Teachers for Tomorrow" is a project designed to attract high school students from Paterson, NJ to careers in teaching. This article is based on an exploration of high school students' sense of self, college awareness and preparedness, and academic achievement during a year-long pre-college program. Data indicate that students developed a strong self concept as capable learners through the structure, activities and opportunities to see themselves accomplishing their academic goals. The program also succeeded in raising college awareness by allowing the students to be on campus and see what it takes to get there and stay there. Finally the program increased student's academic skills through a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum that challenged students at every turn to be their best. (Contains 1 footnote.)

There is growing consensus among educators and policy makers that the gap in academic outcomes that exists along socio-economic and racial lines is the most pressing educational challenge of the day. Given their daily work teaching in public schools in the nation's lowest-income urban and rural communities, Teach For America teachers--or "corps members"--bring a valuable perspective to the public discussion of this achievement gap. This report is the result of a survey of nearly 2,000 of these teachers finishing their first and second years in the classroom, along with almost 200 incoming corps members who were just beginning their training. The survey addressed corps members' beliefs about causes of and solutions to the achievement gap, as well as their own experiences in the classroom. The major findings of this survey are: (1) Educators have the power to close achievement gaps; (2) Expectations of students--from teachers, schools, parents, the general public, and students themselves--are both a powerful tool and a powerful obstacle; (3) Funding, in itself, is not the answer; and (4) The general public has an inaccurate understanding of issues regarding the achievement gap. The growth of interdisciplinary health services research training programs across Canada has in part been due to acknowledgement of and efforts to bridge a gap between researchers, policy makers and practitioners. Consequently, a new breed of interdisciplinary health services researchers (many of whom have specialization in knowledge translation) are now ready to meet complex system demands only to find limited career opportunities. We argue that the investments for advancing interdisciplinary health services training have not been paralleled with post-training positions in academia and elsewhere, and change must occur.

This paper discusses the increasing cooperation between university business schools and foreign language departments in establishing effective language programs for business students, focusing on the development of a computer-assisted language learning course in business Spanish at the University of Texas, Austin. The course utilizes HyperCard computer card files of information in Spanish and English on six Venezuelan companies, based on transcripts of interviews with employees of the companies. The student can retrieve information about individual companies, specific employees and their jobs, translations of passages into English, pronunciation, usage, and grammar. The course is designed for intermediate-level students with a basic knowledge of Spanish who would like to learn business vocabulary and usage. The benefits of such a course to the business school and the foreign language department are also discussed. Samples of HyperCard files are provided. (MDM)

Most of the time, our thoughts are like a river. They flow consistently, one after the other. However, there is a gap in our thoughts. Becoming aware of that gap is a powerful way for us to work with them.

During 1988-91, the School, College, and University Partnership (SCUP) program at Northern Arizona University (NAU) provided services to disadvantaged students in seven rural high schools on or near the Navajo and Hopi reservations. Many of these students came from low-income families, lived in geographically isolated locations, and attended schools with limited resources. SCUP helped students develop the academic skills needed for higher education and provided support for the school-college transition. Based on partnerships between NAU, the Navajo and Hopi tribes, and the Northern Arizona School Board Association, SCUP consisted of an academic-year program and a summer program. The academic-year program served approximately 9,635 students in grades 7-12 and contained the following components: (1) dropout prevention efforts, including study skills training for seventh- and eighth-graders, teacher training in study skills development and cultural awareness issues, community-based study halls, and a bilingual culturally relevant parent involvement program; (2) career and personal development through career fairs, visiting career mentors, and student seminars; and (3) installation of computer-assisted instructional laboratories, followed by teacher and student training. The summer program (Nizhoni Academy)--an intensive 5-week experience at NAU--provided 498 students in grades 9-11 with 160 hours of instruction in English, mathematics, and career development. Instruction emphasized metacognition, concentrated learning, cooperative learning, process approach, and critical thinking skills. In addition, structured extracurricular activities exposed participants to many facets of college life. (SV)

The gap symmetries of superconductivity are studied in this work. It is found that the gap symmetries are simply determined by the 4-fold rotational symmetries of the coupling potential on neighbor sites. A local on-site coupling potential results in the on-site pairing with the conventional s-wave symmetry, but a coupling potential between the nearest neighbors or the next-nearest neighbors results in the pairing on neighbor sites with the $s^-$, $d_{x^2-y^2}$, $d_{xy}$, or $s_{x^2y^2}$ gap symmetries. It is proved that both isotropic and anisotropic gap functions are allowed by the 4-fold rotational symmetries of the coupling potential. Finally a numerical computation is performed to demonstrate the gap symmetries. This neighbor coupling provides a unified picture for the gap functions of the conventional and the high Tc superconductivity.

Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the width of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg ladder described by $\cH= J_\rl \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [ \vS_{j,a} \cdot \vS_{j+1,a} + \vS_{j,b} \cdot \vS_{j+1,b} ] + J_\rr \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [\lambda (S^x_{j,a} S^x_{j,b} + S^y_{j,a} S^y_{j,b}) + S^z_{j,a} S^z_{j,b}] $, where $S^\alpha_{j,a(b)}$ denotes the $\alpha$-component of the spin-1/2 operator at the $j$-th site of the $a (b)$ chain. We mainly focus on the $J_\rr \gg J_\rl > 0$ and $|\lambda| \ll 1$ case. The width of the spin gap as a function of $\lambda$ anomalously increases near $\lambda = 0$; for instance, for $-0.1 < \lambda < 0.1$ when $J_{\rm l}/J_{\rm r} = 0.1$. The gap formation mechanism is thought to be different for the $\lambda < 0$ and $\lambda > 0$ cases. Since, in usual cases, the width of the gap becomes zero or small at the point where the gap formation mechanism changes, the above gap-increasing phenomenon in the present case is anomalous. We explain the origin of this anomalous phenomenon by use of the degenerate perturbation theory. We also draw the ground-state phase diagram.

The regional gravity and magnetic features of the South Indian Shield were discussed. The prominent regional gravity low of 20 to 30 mgls over the charnockite terrain of South India, coupled with the correlation of a steep gravity gradient with a prominent shear zone to the north, can be interpreted in terms of increased crustal thickness in the South Indian high-grade terrain. There is some support for this from deep seismic sounding. The magnetic signature of the high-grade terrain is also distinctive, and Mishra argued that the Palghat-Tiruchi line might represent a Precambrian boundary such as a suture between two distinct crustal blocks.

The gap in academic achievement between blacks and whites is one of the most serious problems in education today. Recent evidence suggests that this gap may be reduced without impairing the performance of whites if students are allowed to work in cooperative learning teams, as team techniques have been shown to increase academic achievement more for minority students than for anglos. This study tests findings with a student team technique called STAD, for Student Teams-Achievement Divisions. STAD is a generic learning technique capable of being used for any subject area in which objective tests can be given. Its most important feature is student teams, which are composed of four to five students of different past achievement. Each team is a cross-section of the class in terms of sex and race as well as academic achievement. The teams are given worksheets to study in pairs or as a group through peer tutoring. Students are tested on the material studied in the teams twice each week, and the individuals' scores are contributed to their team scores. However, the scores are first transformed to remove the effect of past achievement on present performance. Team success is rewarded by means of a weekly class newsletter. The subjects of the study were 65 seventh grade students in two English classes in a Baltimore junior high school. Results indicate that STAD does increase achievement dramatically for blacks, but only minimally for whites. Implications for education are discussed. (Author/JM)

The requirement of validating a new donor for the LSGT used at DSTO has arisen due to changes in ingredient availability for local donor manufacture, and also the availability to import commercial donors from overseas. A donor (manufacture by Accurate Energetic Systems) has been selected for evaluation for use in the LSGT at DSTO by performance and LSGT characterisation. The donor specifications are identical to the donors used in the NOL LSGT and a calibration for the LSGT at DSTO has also been reviewed. The changes recommended in this report have been adopted by DSTO and the test will now be referred to as the DSTO LSGT (previously, the MRL LSGT).

One of the key concepts in the right to education is access: access to the means to fully develop as human beings as well as access to the means to gain skills, knowledge and credentials. This is an important perspective through which to examine the solutions to access enabled by Open Educational Resources (OER) and online learning. I don't think I've ever enjoyed being in a televised discussion more than this one. The piece was shown several times over the ensuing 24 hours by Sky. The Muslim woman's name is pronounced, fittingly, 'Shyster'. She wore the same hatchet-faced expression before and after the filming, and you may like to know she's a 'comedy writer' - for the BBC, it hardly need be said, like Kate Smurfwit. The overall goal of this grant has been to study the mechanisms by which non-genotoxic chemicals act. Specifically, the working hypothesis has been that chemical modulation of gap junctions could lead to many toxic endpoints, such as teratogenesis, tumor promotion, immune-reproductive- and neuro- toxicities. To test this hypothesis, we set up several aims: a) to develop new methods to measures to measure gap junction function (Fluorescence Recovery After Photo-bleaching and scrape-loading/dye transfer); b) to test if several known model non-genotoxic chemicals inhibit intercellular communication in several cell types; and c) to study the biochemical mechanisms by which various chemicals inhibit intercellular communication. Results of this 3 year study have produced a) three new validated in vitro methods to measure gap junction; b) produced overwhelming evidence that known non-genotoxic teratogens, tumor promoters, neuro-, and reproductive-toxicants can inhibit gap junction function; c) evidence suggesting several biochemical mechanisms by which these chemicals act; and d) helped develop a new theoretical framework for a biologically-based risk assessment model system.

The disparity in the college enrollment and graduation of women and men is persistent and troubling but not unique to Connecticut. Across the country, women college students outnumber men by almost 2.6 million and they earn 1.4 times more degrees. A snapshot of gender across colleges in Connecticut reveals the following findings: (1) Men first became a minority of college students in the late 1970s; (2) The gap cannot be explained by demographics; (3) Men disappear at every point along the educational pipeline; (4) Little is known about what men are doing instead of going to college; and (5) The gap is not likely to disappear soon.

In the process of searching the Hubble Space Telescope archive, we have serendipitously discovered three populous Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) clusters with ages that place them in the LMC `age gap.'. These clusters - NGC 2155, SL663, and NGC 2121 - turn out to have [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 and ages of ~4 Gyr. This puts them in the age gap between the intermediate-age LMC clusters, the oldest of which are ~2.5 Gyr old, and ESO121-SC03, which has an age of ~9 Gyr. The addition of these three clusters to the LMC age - metallicity relation has reduced the discrepancy between the age distribution of the LMC clusters and the field stars. Furthermore, it indicates that searches to find more clusters older than ~2.5 Gyr in the LMC are crucial to a better understanding of its global star formation history.
