4ERIC ED362554: Standard-Setting Study Of College Board Mathematics Level I And Mathematics Level II Achievement Tests For Use In Course Placement And Credit By Examination In Mathematics 305G At The University Of Texas At Austin--Fall 1991.

The Measurement and Evaluation Center of the University of Texas at Austin conducted a standard-setting study in 1991 to reassess the use of the College Board's Achievement Tests in mathematics, Level I and Level II for course placement and credit by examination in an elementary functions and coordinate geometry course. Students in 20 sections of the course were given either the Level I or the Level II test as part of the final examination. Test scores were obtained for 363 students who took the Level I math test and for 342 students who took the Level II math test. Test results were correlated with preliminary course grades obtained from the instructors. For each of the tests, score values indicated by six guidelines about decision scores in the professional literature were presented to the mathematics department to consider for selecting credit by examination scores and course placement scores. There were five possible decision scores for Level I and four for Level II. The prerequisite requirement for enrollment in the course was not changed, but the scores for receiving credit by examination were changed. Eight tables present study findings. (SLD)

The Wild at Heart Adventure forms part of The Manhood Experience manual which consists of six experiential training courses. It is the third course in this series and follows In the Heart of a Man (Course One) and   Reclaiming Manhood (Course Two).  This information forms a vital part in the delivery of this course and is not repeated here. In this training we encourage men to have a wider view of what is possible in being a man. We embrace the notion that there is no one "masculinity" but rather a diverse set of masculinities available.  Due to safety consideration and the higher level of facilitation and teamwork required the deliver this course effectively, Hearts of Men does not think it wise to distribute this specific course content without knowing that the required levels of training and supervision are in place. Hence it is being produced separately, although it forms an intergral part of  The Manhood Experience  training. The study took place in a laboratory school located in a Midwestern community with a population of about 100,000. The laboratory school was located on the campus of a comprehensive 4-year university. A university faculty member who was school-based taught a teacher education class within the laboratory school building. The impact of the course was examined through surveys administered to the laboratory school faculty who served as guest speakers, the university students enrolled in the course, and the laboratory school children who were involved in student teacher lessons. Data were analyzed using qualitative methodology. Results and implications for practice are discussed. The following are appended: (1) Survey for Primary Grade Students; (2) Survey for Intermediate Students; (3) Survey for University Students; (4) Survey for Faculty; and (5) Unitized Survey Results From PLS Faculty. A two-semester course in technical writing, developed at Hinds Junior College, is designed as a practical course which fulfills the junior college English requirements and helps students to develop the language skills they will need in the job market and in technical careers. During the first semester, students are guided in writing process explanations, instructions, definitions, descriptions of mechanisms, cause/effect analyses, and classification and partition analyses. Second semester students are instructed in writing summaries, letters, reports, and a research paper. Each kind of writing is treated as a unit of study for which each student receives an outline to use as a guide for reading and studying necessary chapters, for keeping up with assignments, and for test review. In course design, topic outline organization encompasses the structuring and sequencing of topics to be delivered in a learning environment. Recent studies in topic outline optimization revolve around massive open online courses (MOOCs) due to their abundance but not much has been studied on the traditional courses. This study investigates the organization of topic outlines in traditional introductory programming courses across Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) and evaluates the viability of the synthesized alternative topic outlines. Course syllabi were collected from 16 HEIs. A topic precedence graph (TPG) model that provides a structured overview of the introductory programming was created via a semi-supervised pairwise constrained k-means (PCK-Means) clustering to structure the topics which produced 20 topic clusters with strong topic cohesion within the clusters. The TPG showed that HEIs tend to start the outline similarly, followed by core programming topics with varied sequences, and divergent ways of ending the outline. Two anomaly clusters were identified as having topic titles grouped that do not seem to have a unifying topic. Limitations of the clustering algorithm are identified where it cannot identify semantic meaning between words which may affect its applicability in situations where topic titles are named inconsistently. From the TPG, alternative optimal and comprehensive topic outlines were synthesized via greedy and DFS graph traversal algorithms. However, these alternative outlines performed very poorly when compared with the evaluators' (n=19) arrangement of topic outlines due to some prerequisite topics being discussed in the latter part already. Overall, this study introduces a method to incorporate computer science technologies in structuring topics across HEIs and aiding educators in topic outline design but more research is needed before it can be implemented in a real classroom setting.

As J. Radford (2008) points out in "Psychology in its place," the question of what role psychology should play in Higher Education is merely a subsection of the question, what is (Higher) Education for? In light of the large number of psychology undergraduates who do not go on to pursue careers in psychology, Radford argues cogently for a re-evaluation of the content and purpose of the psychology degree. This article presents the author's response to J. Radford's paper. This brief response goes further to examine the coherence of the current provision for studying psychology in post-compulsory education in the UK, and to ask whether the time has come to think more widely about the role psychology could play in the education of all children in the UK, through its inclusion in the compulsory school curriculum. There are practical problems involved with introducing psychology into the compulsory school curriculum and, justifiably, teachers will say that the curriculum is already too crowded. The author stresses that it is possible, therefore, that greater integration of psychology into the school curriculum could have the effect of reducing the gender imbalance. In Radford's terms, the teachers' challenge is to decide how the discipline of psychology should be presented by psychology the subject at each educational level, taking into account the aims of the course, the aspirations of the students and, at higher levels, the requirements of professional bodies. A description is provided of an attempt at Harvard University to integrate course content with technology and the institutional setting. The course, "Communication in Societies," was aimed at non-science majors and explored the science and technology of communication and their effects on social organization. The objective was to impart an understanding of language and communication and enough command of scientific method and skills to mitigate the alienation from science found in so many students. The impact of the course on student attitudes toward science is examined, and the selection of course content, instructional methodology and grading patterns are discussed. Software and hardware used in the course are analyzed and a review is made of the problems involved in moving from experimental services to routine institutionalization. Attention is called to the needs to: 1) develop accounting procedures capable of projecting and comparing costs; 2) provide a better managerial structure for experiments; and 3) develop procedures which permit the handling of longitudinal data. A series of 12 appendixes gives complete details on the project. (Author)

The design of teacher education programs, including the preparation of teachers for working with information and communication technology (ICT), requires balancing of multiple considerations. Attention should be given to characteristics of students, requirements of education authorities and prospective employers, broader community aspirations, and local institutional imperatives, including university policies and resource constraints. The process of preparing for the re-accreditation of teacher preparation programs at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) provided an opportunity for review of the provisions for teaching and learning about ICT in the light of a changing policy environment for education. This paper describes how the existing degree program incorporates learning about ICT and discusses some adjustments being proposed to ensure that the revised program may better meet the needs of graduating teachers in the new millennium. The first section discusses the policy environment for ICT in teacher education, including mandated standards. Existing provision of ICT in teacher education at USQ is described in the second section, including three program elements (i.e., the core curriculum, optional minor study, and integration of ICT into general studies in education) and program deficiencies. The third section addresses integrating ICT in a revised teacher education program, including modeling the integration of ICT and facility needs. Contains 12 references. (MES)
