8The Performance Analysis Of Distributed Brillouin Corrosion Sensors For Steel Reinforced Concrete Structures.
By Wei, Heming, Zhao, Xuefeng, Kong, Xianglong, Zhang, Pinglei, Cui, Yanjun and Sun, Changsen
This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 14 . Abstract The Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA)-based optical fiber method has been proposed to measure strain variations caused by corrosion expansion. Spatial resolutions of 1 m can be achieved with this kind of Brillouin sensor for detecting the distributed strain. However, when the sensing fiber is wound around the steel rebar in a number of circles in a range of several meters, this spatial resolution still has limitations for corrosion monitoring. Here, we employed a low-coherent fiber-optic strain sensor (LCFS) to survey the performance of Brillouin sensors based on the fact that the deformation measured by the LCFS equals the integral of the strains obtained from Brillouin sensors. An electrochemical accelerated corrosion experiment was carried out and the corrosion expansion was monitored by both BOTDA and the LCFS. Results demonstrated that the BOTDA can only measure the expansion strain of about 1,000 με, which was generated by the 18 mm steel rebar corrosion, but, the LCFS had high sensitivity from the beginning of corrosion to the destruction of the structure, and no obvious difference in expansion speed was observed during the acceleration stage of the corrosion developed in the reinforced concrete (RC) specimens. These results proved that the BOTDA method could only be employed to monitor the corrosion inside the structure in the early stage.

12NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110023885: Swarms Of Micron-Sized Sensors
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A paper presents the concept of swarms of micron-sized and smaller carriers of sensing equipment, denoted generally as controllable granular matter, to be used in exploring remote planets and interplanetary space. The design and manufacture of controllable granular matter would exploit advances in microelectromechanical systems and nanotechnology. Depending on specific designs and applications, controllable granular matter could have characteristics like those of powders, sands, or aerosols, which would be dispersed into the environments to be explored: For example, sensory grains could be released into orbit around a planet, spread out over ground, or dispersed into wind or into a body of liquid. The grains would thus become integral parts of multiphase environments, where they would function individually and/or collectively to gather information about the environments. In cases of clouds of grains dispersed in outer space, it may be feasible to use laser beams to shape the clouds to perform specific functions. To enable the full utilization of controllable granular matter, it is necessary to advance the knowledge of the dynamics and controllable characteristics of both individual grains and the powders, sands, or aerosols of which they are parts.

13The Brighter-fatter Effect And Pixel Correlations In CCD Sensors
By P. Antilogus, P. Astier, P. Doherty, A. Guyonnet and N. Regnault
We present evidence that spots imaged using astronomical CCDs do not exactly scale with flux: bright spots tend to be broader than faint ones, using the same illumination pattern. We measure that the linear size of spots or stars, of typical size 3 to 4 pixels FWHM, increase linearly with their flux by up to $2\%$ over the full CCD dynamic range. This brighter-fatter effect affects both deep-depleted and thinned CCD sensors. We propose that this effect is a direct consequence of the distortions of the drift electric field sourced by charges accumulated within the CCD during the exposure and experienced by forthcoming light-induced charges in the same exposure. The pixel boundaries then become slightly dynamical: overfilled pixels become increasingly smaller than their neighbors, so that bright star sizes, measured in number of pixels, appear larger than those of faint stars. This interpretation of the brighter-fatter effect implies that pixels in flat-fields should exhibit statistical correlations, sourced by Poisson fluctuations, that we indeed directly detect. We propose to use the measured correlations in flat-fields to derive how pixel boundaries shift under the influence of a given charge pattern, which allows us to quantitatively predict how star shapes evolve with flux. This physical model of the brighter-fatter effect also explains the commonly observed phenomenon that the spatial variance of CCD flat-fields increases less rapidly than their average.

14Tracking Group Social Interaction In Young Adults Using Wearable Sensors - A Replication.
By Paula Wicher
This study aims to investigate how naturally occurring social dynamics in a real-world group interaction relate to participants' personality traits and their expressed liking for one another. Participants will attend data collection sessions in groups of approximately 10-15 individuals, engaging in a structured series of ice-breaker games and social interaction tasks. Throughout these activities, their body movements will be continuously recorded using head-worn wearable accelerometers. For each dyad (pair of participants), we will quantify their movement coordination (interpersonal synchrony) using wavelet coherence analysis of the accelerometer data. Prior to the in-person session, participants will complete a battery of questionnaires assessing personality and other individual traits. Immediately following the session, they will provide ratings of liking for each group member they interacted with. Data collection will span five experimental sessions, each composed of approximately 10-15 individuals previously unacquainted with one another. The sample will consist of students enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at University College London (UCL). To be eligible, individuals must be healthy, over 18 years of age, fluent in English, free from any major vision, hearing, or movement disabilities that could impair their participation, and able to attend the session in person. This study has received ethical approval from the UCL Research Ethics Committee (Approval ID: ICN-VW-24-03-2024A). The in-person data collection will take place at a spacious seminar room within the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, London. Movement data will be captured using head-worn mBient sensors, which are equipped with built-in accelerometers. Each session, lasting approximately 50 minutes, will be structured into four distinct parts: (1) whole-group activities, (2) team-based games, where participants are divided into two teams, (3) paired conversations, where participants are matched with a member from the opposing team for two rounds of discussion, and (4) a final mingling activity, where participants can move freely, interact, and enjoy snacks provided. Behavioural and trait data collection will follow a four-step sequence. Steps 1 and 2 will occur prior to the in-person experimental session. Step 1 involves participants completing demographic questions during the recruitment phase. Step 2 comprises the completion of individual trait questionnaires: - Personality: 20-item Big Five Inventory (BFI) - Social Anxiety: Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) - Attachment Styles: Relationship Questionnaire (RQ) - Autism: Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) - ADHD: Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1) - A new cultural homophily questionnaire, which we are piloting An acquaintance check will also be administered in this step to ensure participants assigned to the same session are not previously friends. After Step 2, participants attend the in-person data collection at UCL as described above. Then step 3 will take place immediately after data collection, where participants respond to liking question (“How much did you feel like you connected with this person?”) about each individual in the session, displayed alongside that person’s name and photo. They are also asked whether they wish the research team to share their contact details (yes/no). If both participants chose “yes,” the research team will exchange their details after the session. Step 4 will be a follow-up approximately two weeks later, involving questions about any continued contact or developing relationships with other participants from the session. This study primarily aims to replicate previous exploratory findings regarding the interplay between individual traits, trait homophily, interpersonal synchrony, and liking. Analyses will be conducted at both individual and dyadic levels. Research Questions: Individual level: 1. Do individual traits predict an individual's overall propensity to synchronise with others (personal-level synchrony)? 2. Do personal-level synchrony and individual traits predict an individual's general tendency to be liked by others (popularity) and their general tendency to like others (affinity)? Dyadic level: 1. Does homophily in personality traits predict the level of interpersonal synchrony observed within that dyad? 2. Do interpersonal synchrony, shared context (team/pair membership), and trait homophily predict the level of mutual liking reported within dyads? 3. Does interpersonal synchrony mediate the relationship between personality homophily and mutual liking?

18Limitations On The Use Of Acoustic Sensors In RF Breakdown Localization
By F. Le Pimpec
X-band accelerator structures, meeting the Next Linear Collider (NLC) design requirements, have been found to suffer damage due to radio frequency (RF) breakdown when processed to high gradients. Improved understanding of these breakdown events is desirable for the development of structure designs, fabrication procedures, and processing techniques that minimize structure damage. Using an array of acoustic sensors, we have been able to pinpoint the location of individual breakdown events. However, a more accurate localization is required to understand the interaction between the phonon or the sound wave with the OFE copper.

19Optimality Of Received Energy In Decision Fusion Over Rayleigh Fading Diversity MAC With Non-Identical Sensors
By D. Ciuonzo, G. Romano and P. Salvo Rossi
Received-energy test for non-coherent decision fusion over a Rayleigh fading multiple access channel (MAC) without diversity was recently shown to be optimum in the case of conditionally mutually independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) sensor decisions under specific conditions [1], [2]. Here, we provide a twofold generalization, allowing sensors to be non identical on one hand and introducing diversity on the other hand. Along with the derivation, we provide also a general tool to verify optimality of the the received energy test in scenarios with correlated sensor decisions. Finally, we derive an analytical expression of the effect of the diversity on the large-system performances, under both individual and total power constraints.

21Medical Remote Sensors In Tactical Networks
By Coates, Hunter R. and Urquidez, Gabriel R.
The use of vital sign data is a fundamental diagnostic process that is ubiquitous in the delivery of healthcare in military medicine. This process, while providing invaluable information for planning patient treatment, has historically come with administrative challenges in transcription and remote monitoring. New advancements in sensors technologies operating in tactical networks provide a unique opportunity to meet these challenges. This thesis expands upon previous Naval Postgraduate School CENETIX laboratory research into battlefield medicine by providing a qualitative analysis of COTS sensor capabilities within the U.S. Coast Guard network infrastructure. Due to the unique nature of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Defense, utilization of tactical networked radios within a mesh network for transmission of vital sign data is explored.

28NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140004927: Packaging Technologies For High Temperature Electronics And Sensors
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This paper reviews ceramic substrates and thick-film metallization based packaging technologies in development for 500degC silicon carbide (SiC) electronics and sensors. Prototype high temperature ceramic chip-level packages and printed circuit boards (PCBs) based on ceramic substrates of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and aluminum nitride (AlN) have been designed and fabricated. These ceramic substrate-based chiplevel packages with gold (Au) thick-film metallization have been electrically characterized at temperatures up to 550degC. A 96% alumina based edge connector for a PCB level subsystem interconnection has also been demonstrated recently. The 96% alumina packaging system composed of chip-level packages and PCBs has been tested with high temperature SiC devices at 500degC for over 10,000 hours. In addition to tests in a laboratory environment, a SiC JFET with a packaging system composed of a 96% alumina chip-level package and an alumina printed circuit board mounted on a data acquisition circuit board was launched as a part of the MISSE-7 suite to the International Space Station via a Shuttle mission. This packaged SiC transistor was successfully tested in orbit for eighteen months. A spark-plug type sensor package designed for high temperature SiC capacitive pressure sensors was developed. This sensor package combines the high temperature interconnection system with a commercial high temperature high pressure stainless steel seal gland (electrical feed-through). Test results of a packaged high temperature capacitive pressure sensor at 500degC are also discussed. In addition to the pressure sensor package, efforts for packaging high temperature SiC diode-based gas chemical sensors are in process.

29NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050229950: Characterization Of Polymer-Coated MEMS Humidity Sensors For Flight Applications
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Under NASA's Aviation Safety Program (AvSP), in addition to wind velocity and temperature, water vapor is considered one key factor in determining aviation weather, which is a substantial contributor to many general aviation (GA) accidents. The conventional and reliable humidity measuring methods such as radiation reflection or absorption have relatively high cost in addition to highly specialized operating and maintenance characteristics. This paper presents characterizations of inexpensive MEMS and capacitance type humidity sensors for their potential use on aircraft. If installed, these sensors are subjected to ambient environmental conditions as well as to different chemicals and deicing fluids used on aircraft. This paper reports the effect of different deicing fluids and chemicals on these inexpensive humidity sensors.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20060048497: Effect Of Embedded Piezoelectric Sensors On Fracture Toughness And Fatigue Resistance Of Composite Laminates Under Mode I Loading
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Double-cantilevered beam (DCB) specimens of a glass/epoxy composite material with embedded piezoelectric sensors were tested both statically and under fatigue loading to determine the effect of the embedded material on the Mode I fracture toughness and fatigue resistance compared to baseline data without the embedded elements. A material known as LaRC-Macrofiber Composite (LaRC-MFC (TradeMark)), or MFC, was embedded at the midplane of the specimen during the layup. Specimens were manufactured with the embedded MFC material either at the loaded end of the specimen to simulate an initial delamination; or with the MFC material located at the delaminating interface, with a Teflon film at the loaded end to simulate an initial delamination. There were three types of specimens with the embedded material at the delaminating interface: co-cured with no added adhesive; cured with a paste adhesive applied to the embedded element; or cured with a film adhesive added to the embedded material. Tests were conducted with the sensors in both the passive and active states. Results were compared to baseline data for the same material without embedded elements. Interlaminar fracture toughness values (G(sub Ic)) for the passive condition showed little change when the MFC was at the insert end. Passive results varied when the MFC was at the delaminating interface. For the co-cured case and with the paste adhesive, G(sub Ic) decreased compared to the baseline toughness, whereas, for the film adhesive case, G(sub Ic) was significantly greater than the baseline toughness, but the failure was always catastrophic. When the MFC was in the active state, G(sub Ic) was generally lower compared to the passive results. Fatigue tests showed little effect of the embedded material whether it was active or passive compared to baseline values.

35NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20150010225: Progress In The Development Of Mo-Au Transition-Edge Sensors For X-Ray Spectroscopy
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
X-ray microcalorimeters using transition-edge sensors (TES) show great promise for use in astronomical x-ray spectroscopy. We have obtained very high energy resolution (2.8 electronvolts at 1.5 kiloelectronvolts and 3.7 electronvolts at 3.3 kiloelectronvolts) in a large, isolated TES pixel using a Mo/Au proximity-effect bilayer on a silicon nitride membrane. We will discuss the performance and our characterization of that device. In order to be truly suitable for use behind an x-ray telescope, however, such devices need to be arrayed with a pixel size and focal-plane coverage commensurate with the telescope focal length and spatial resolution. Since this requires fitting the TES and its thermal link, a critical component of each calorimeter pixel, into a far more compact geometry than has previously been investigated, we must study the fundamental scaling laws in pixel optimization. We have designed a photolithography mask that will allow us to probe the range in thermal conductance that can be obtained by perforating the nitride membrane in a narrow perimeter around the sensor. This mask will also show the effects of reducing the TES area. Though we have not yet tested devices of the compact designs, we will present our progress in several of the key processing steps and discuss the parameter space of our intended investigations.

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20230000142: Using DSCOVR EPIC As A Transfer Radiometer To Scale Multiple VIIRS Sensors Over Tropical Earth Views
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The NASA CERES project provides Energy Balanced and Filled (EBAF) product climate-quality observed TOA and computed surface fluxes to the climate community. The CERES instruments are on board the Terra, Aqua, Suomi-NPP, and NOAA-20 satellites. The CERES project radiometrically scales the MODIS and VIIRS imager visible channel radiances to the Aqua- MODIS reference to retrieve consistent imager cloud properties between sensors, which are used to retrieve cloud properties required for converting CERES radiance observations into fluxes. The NPP, NOAA-20, and the future NOAA-21 VIIRS imagers will be in the same sun- synchronous orbit but spaced equally apart, which means that no simultaneous nadir overpasses (SNO) may be used to inter-calibrate the VIIRS imagers to each one another. Currently, the CERES project uses Aqua-MODIS to radiometrically scale between VIIRS imagers. Once the Terra and Aqua satellites start drifting toward the terminator, Aqua-MODIS can no longer be utilized as the transfer radiometer between VIIRS sensors and there will be no SNOs in common between either MODIS and or VIIRS imagers.\nThe DSCOVR satellite orbits the Lagrange-1 (L1) point about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) instrument on the Earth-facing side of DSCOVR takes images ranging from the UV to the NIR of the sunlit side of the Earth. While the EPIC sensor has no onboard calibration systems, multiple inter-calibration studies have indicated that the EPIC instrument response is radiometrically stable. The stability of the EPIC instrument allows it to be used as a transfer radiometer between all MODIS and VIIRS imagers and is especially suited for drifting orbits because EPIC imager frequently samples the Earth diurnally. The study will demonstrate the use of EPIC as a transfer radiometer to radiometrically scale the NPP and NOAA-20 VIIRS imagers. The scaling factors will be compared with the scaling factors using Aqua-MODIS as the transfer radiometer.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19720021821: Analytical Design Of Sensors For Measuring During Terminal Phase Of Atmospheric Temperature Planetary Entry
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
An analytical study was conducted to develop a sensor for measuring the temperature of a planetary atmosphere from an entry vehicle traveling at supersonic speeds and having a detached shock. Such a sensor has been used in the Planetary Atmosphere Experiments Test Probe (PAET) mission and is planned for the Viking-Mars mission. The study specifically considered butt-welded thermocouple sensors stretched between two support posts; however, the factors considered are sufficiently general to apply to other sensors as well. This study included: (1) an investigation of the relation between sensor-measured temperature and free-stream conditions; (2) an evaluation of the effects of extraneous sources of heat; (3) the development of a computer program for evaluating sensor response during entry; and (4) a parametric study of sensor design characteristics.

The development of fiber optic sensors for the detection of a variety of material parameters has grown tremendously over the past several years. Additionally, the potential for analytical applications of fiber optic sensors have become more widely used. New pH sensors have also been developed using fiber optic techniques to detect fluorescence characteristics from immobilized fluorogenic reagent chemicals. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using fiber optic sensors to detect the presence of Al(sup 3+) ions made in the process of environmental corrosion of aluminum materials. The Al(sup 3+) ions plus a variety of other type of metal ions can be detected using analytical techniques along with fiber optic sensors.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This 12-part report documents the data obtained from various sensor measurements taken aboard the Russian Express-A2 and Express-A3 spacecraft in Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO). These GEO communications satellites, which were designed and built by NPO Prikladnoy Mekhaniki (NPO PM) of Zheleznogorsk, Russia, utilize Hall thruster propulsion systems for north-south and east-west stationkeeping and as of June 2002, were still operating at 80 E. and 11 W., respectively. Express-A2 was launched on March 12, 2000, while Express-A3 was launched on June 24, 2000. The diagnostic equipment from which these data were taken includes electric field strength sensors, ion current and energy sensors, and pressure sensors. The diagnostics and the Hall thruster propulsion systems are described in detail along with lists of tabular data from those diagnostics and propulsion system and other satellite systems. Space Power, Inc., now part of Pratt & Whitney's Chemical Systems Division, under contract NAS3 99151 to the NASA Glenn Research Center, obtained these data over several periods from March 12, 2000, through September 30, 2001. Each of the 12 individual reports describe, in detail, the propulsion systems as well as the diagnostic sensors utilized. Finally, parts 11 and 12 include the requirements to which NPO PM prepared and delivered these data.

42NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20040071015: Advanced Video Guidance Sensor And Next Generation Autonomous Docking Sensors
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In recent decades, NASA's interest in spacecraft rendezvous and proximity operations has grown. Additional instrumentation is needed to improve manned docking operations' safety, as well as to enable telerobotic operation of spacecraft or completely autonomous rendezvous and docking. To address this need, Advanced Optical Systems, Inc., Orbital Sciences Corporation, and Marshall Space Flight Center have developed the Advanced Video Guidance Sensor (AVGS) under the auspices of the Demonstration of Autonomous Rendezvous Technology (DART) program. Given a cooperative target comprising several retro-reflectors, AVGS provides six-degree-of-freedom information at ranges of up to 300 meters for the DART target. It does so by imaging the target, then performing pattern recognition on the resulting image. Longer range operation is possible through different target geometries. Now that AVGS is being readied for its test flight in 2004, the question is: what next? Modifications can be made to AVGS, including different pattern recognition algorithms and changes to the retro-reflector targets, to make it more robust and accurate. AVGS could be coupled with other space-qualified sensors, such as a laser range-and-bearing finder, that would operate at longer ranges. Different target configurations, including the use of active targets, could result in significant miniaturization over the current AVGS package. We will discuss these and other possibilities for a next-generation docking sensor or sensor suite that involve AVGS.

45NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940031110: Operational Support For Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) Attitude Sensors
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) has several sensors that can provide observations for attitude determination: star trackers, Sun sensors (gimbaled as well as fixed), magnetometers, Earth sensors, and gyroscopes. The accuracy of these observations is important for mission success. Analysts on the Flight Dynamics Facility (FDF) UARS Attitude task monitor these data to evaluate the performance of the sensors taking corrective action when appropriate. Monitoring activities range from examining the data during real-time passes to constructing long-term trend plots. Increasing residuals (differences) between the observed and expected quantities is a prime indicator of sensor problems. Residual increases may be due to alignment shifts and/or degradation in sensor output. Residuals from star tracker data revealed and anomalous behavior that contributes to attitude errors. Compensating for this behavior has significantly reduced the attitude errors. This paper discusses the methods used by the FDF UARS attitude task for maintenance of the attitude sensors, including short- and long-term monitoring, trend analysis, and calibration methods, and presents the results obtained through corrective action.

46NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19970018375: Final Design And Integration Of Micro-Chip Inductive Edge Sensors For The Seven Segment Demonstrator. Testing Of Integrated Edge Sensors In Test Packages
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The contractor attended the critical design review and evaluated the presentations of other team members and presented data on the inductive edge sensor. The prototype micro-chip inductive edge sensor was evaluated, and devices were found to have a number of characteristics which made them unsuitable for installation on the seven segment demonstrator. The amplifier bandwidth was too low, the output drive current was too small, and there is an interaction between the digital circuitry and the amplifier that causes the amplifier to stop functioning. Therefore, the inductive edge sensors were not installed on the seven segment demonstrator. The contractor has participated in instruction, problem analysis, and provided technical assistance to NASA and its contractors for the development of 8 hexagonal mirror faceplates with electronics and edge sensors.

48NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830020268: High Density Schottky Barrier IRCCD Sensors For SWIR Applications At Intermediate Temperature
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Monolithic 32 x 64 and 64 x 1:128 palladium silicide (Pd2Si) interline transfer infrared charge coupled devices (IRCCDs) sensitive in the 1 to 3.5 micron spectral band were developed. This silicon imager exhibits a low response nonuniformity of typically 0.2 to 1.6% rms, and was operated in the temperature range between 40 to 140 K. Spectral response measurements of test Pd2Si p-type Si devices yield quantum efficiencies of 7.9% at 1.25 microns, 5.6% at 1.65 microns 2.2% at 2.22 microns. Improvement in quantum efficiency is expected by optimizing the different structural parameters of the Pd2Si detectors. The spectral response of the Pd2Si detectors fit a modified Fowler emission model. The measured photo-electric barrier height for the Pd2Si detectors is 0.34 eV and the measured quantum efficiency coefficient, C1, is 19%/eV. The dark current level of Pd2Si Schottky barrier focal plane arrays (FPAs) is sufficiently low to enable operation at intermediate temperatures at TV frame rates. Typical dark current level measured at 120 K on the FPA is 2 nA/sq cm. The operating temperature of the Pd2Si FPA is compatible with passive cooler performance. In addition, high density Pd2Si Schottky barrier FPAs are manufactured with high yield and therefore represent an economical approach to short wavelength IR imaging. A Pd2Si Schottky barrier image sensor for push-broom multispectral imaging in the 1.25, 1.65, and 2.22 micron bands is being studied. The sensor will have two line arrays (dual band capability) of 512 detectors each, with 30 micron center-to-center detector spacing. The device will be suitable for chip-to-chip abutment, thus providing the capability to produce large, multiple chip focal planes with contiguous, in-line sensors.

49NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19880000935: Development Of Response Models For The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) Sensors. Part 4: Preliminary Nonscanner Models And Count Conversion Algorithms
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Two count conversion algorithms and the associated dynamic sensor model for the M/WFOV nonscanner radiometers are defined. The sensor model provides and updates the constants necessary for the conversion algorithms, though the frequency with which these updates were needed was uncertain. This analysis therefore develops mathematical models for the conversion of irradiance at the sensor field of view (FOV) limiter into data counts, derives from this model two algorithms for the conversion of data counts to irradiance at the sensor FOV aperture and develops measurement models which account for a specific target source together with a sensor. The resulting algorithms are of the gain/offset and Kalman filter types. The gain/offset algorithm was chosen since it provided sufficient accuracy using simpler computations.

50NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19770011260: Space Shuttle Earth Observation Sensors Pointing And Stabilization Requirements Study
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The shuttle orbiter inertial measurement unit (IMU), located in the orbiter cabin, is used to supply inertial attitude reference signals; and, in conjunction with the onboard navigation system, can provide a pointing capability of the navigation base accurate to within plus or minus 0.5 deg for earth viewing missions. This pointing accuracy can degrade to approximately plus or minus 2.0 deg for payloads located in the aft bay due to structural flexure of the shuttle vehicle, payload structural and mounting misalignments, and calibration errors with respect to the navigation base. Drawbacks to obtaining pointing accuracy by using the orbiter RCS jets are discussed. Supplemental electromechanical pointing systems are developed to provide independent pointing for individual sensors, or sensor groupings. The missions considered and the sensors required for these missions and the parameters of each sensor are described. Assumptions made to derive pointing and stabilization requirements are delineated.
