This study will examine how engaging in a behavior that is generally considered to be unethical impacts an individual's self-esteem. The behavior will be lying and self-esteem will be measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale.

A quantitative analysis research method was used to investigate the self-esteem level and trauma symptoms of economically disadvantaged college students with trauma symptoms using the Rosenberg Self Esteem Questionnaire and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Screening Scale. After that, a 4-week expressive writing intervention was conducted to explore the impact of expressive writing intervention on the self-esteem of college students with trauma symptoms. In order to explore effective interventions to improve the self-esteem of college students with traumatic symptoms, and provide evidence-based online self-help solutions for college student work and group psychological counseling.

Decades of research have been published to understand the aetiology and pathophysiology of depression and there has been a particular focus on the potential role of self-esteem (Abramson et al., 1978; Kaltenboeck and Harmer, 2018). Although a relationship between low self-esteem and depression is well established, there is little agreement regarding the nature of the relationship between these two variables (Ortho and Robins, 2013). To date, no large-scale meta-analysis have been performed to investigate the effects of psychotherapies for adult depression and measuring the effects on the secondary outcome such as low self esteem.To help fill the gap, the finding suggests conducting a comprehensive meta-analysis to test the hypothesis whether psychotherapeutic intervention for depression has a co-occurring benefit on improving self-esteem.

Retention has been the answer to the problem of what to do with students who are unprepared for the academic and social demands of the next grade. Studies contend that children view retention as punishment and experience emotions such as fear, anger, and sadness when not promoted. Retention or nonpromotion can be defined as the practice of requiring a child to repeat a particular grade or requiring a child of appropriate chronological age to delay entry to kindergarten or first grade. This study (n=36) was designed to investigate the long-term impact of being retained in kindergarten or first grade on seventh and eighth grade students. The hypothesis was that retained students would score significantly lower than their nonretained peers on academic and self-esteem measures. Academic achievement was measured by the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS) and self-esteem was measured by the Self-Esteem Inventory School Form. Results supported the hypothesis that retained students had significantly lower academic achievement and self-esteem scores that the promoted pupils. Contains 12 references. (JBJ)

This study is designed to investigate if personality traits predict self-esteem differently between those that seem to be conformists versus nonconformists.

This research anchors in a worldwide increase of Internet and social media use. The age bracket of the 15-24 years old are the one that use the most the social media, with Instagram taking the lead of the most used social media in this age group (Gautier, 2022). We choose to work on this population, because the impact of social media on them is not trifling, indeed, for example, frequency of Instagram use is correlated with depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, anxiety related to general and physical appearance, and body dissatisfaction for young women (Sherlock & Wagstaff, 2019). The main objective of this study is to study the impact of Instagram’s use (frequency, duration, active or passive use) on the affects and the self-discrepancy on the young adults between 18 and 20 years old (male and female). We also considered the potential moderator or protector role of self-clarity and self-esteem on the link between Instagram, self-discrepancy and affects. The higher the intensity of (passive) Instagram use, the more the individual will feel negative affects. The less positive affects they will feel and the more significant self-discrepancy they will report. The higher the participants' self-esteem and/or self-clarity, the lower the impact of (passive) Instagram use on affects and self-discrepancies will be.

Research shows that hostility may lead to deleterious consequences for health, anger, aggressive behavior, and interpersonal relationships. This study investigated the relation of parents' hostility levels to both the self-esteem (SE) of college-aged participants and the adolescents' phenomenological assessments of parental authority. The 199 college students for this study came from two-parent families. Participants completed four questionnaires: (1) a mothers' authority questionnaire, (2) a fathers' authority questionnaire, (3) a SE scale; and (4) a demographic information sheet. Each parent filled out the Cook and Medley Hostility Scale. When comparing fathers' and mothers' hostility, paternal hostility more strongly predicted patterns of authority exercised in the home (both authoritarianism and authoritativeness), and adolescent self-esteem. The psychological disposition of hostility appears to affect the overt behavioral and emotional expressions of men more than of women -- hostile fathers seem more apt to interact with their children in abrupt, demanding, and controlling ways. The findings suggest that the behavioral and emotional consequences of hostility are different for men and women, which agrees with previous studies. The cross-sectional field survey examined the roles of mathematics anxiety, self-esteem, proactive coping, and test stress in mathematics achievement among 204 (151 females) randomly selected Year 8-10 Brunei secondary school students. The negative dimensions of mathematics anxiety, self-esteem, and proactive coping correlated negatively with mathematics achievement and were both poor predictors of and barriers to mathematics achievement. Both test stress components (intrusive and avoidance) also related negatively with mathematics grades and were poor predictors of mathematics achievement. In addition, females scored significantly higher on negative self-esteem and intrusive stress variables than males. Furthermore, mathematically less able students scored significantly higher on the negative mathematics anxiety and negative self-esteem domains than more able peers. Moreover, positive proactive coping was a good predictor of mathematics achievement. Overall, the findings have practical significance indicating psychological areas where attention, counselling efforts and educational interventions need to be directed to help the at-risk and vulnerable students.

During the course of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS), a tremendous amount of data will be collected on the educational, vocational, and personal development of high school graduates, and the personal, familial, social, institutional, and cultural factors that contribute to that development. Information of a correlational nature collected on a broad and representative sample of persons is available for use in establishing normative information and in providing construct validation for tightly controlled experiments conducted on an unrepresentative sampling of persons--e.g. college sophomores. These data are potentially most useful to psychologists and other researchers for generating hypotheses. The scope of the NLS survey is described briefly, as are the results on self-esteem and locus of control obtained from an analysis of the NLS data. The issues which can be studied by using NLS data on self-esteem and locus of control are also discussed. (Author/EVH)

This Study is about the impact of Instagram on the implicit self-esteem. The impact of Instagram is a result of social comparison. There are two different ways of social comparison: downward and upward comparison. Downward comparison would have a higher self-esteem as result, meanwhile upward comparison would result in a lower self-esteem. But the question is: Which parts of Instagram might have an impact on social comparison? We want to evaluate the numbers of likes and the content of pictures specifically on Instagram.

In 2004 I moved to the mid-west to be the person I thought I would spend the rest of my life with.   The relationship quickly soured, he was jealous, possessive moody, a chronic liar, emotionally abusive, and eventually physically abusive. I lost any confidence I had in myself. I had been an actress and performer, and an artist, and after several years with him, I was a broken person, too scared to even leave the house. Depression and fear we retaking over my life.  I wanted more than anything to learn to ballroom dance, there was a studio close to my home and it took years to build up courage enough to walk in those doors.  Dancing was the beginning of me finding my way back to myself. I became a professional ballroom dance instructor 8 months after my first lesson.  I have been a professional ballroom dancer since 2010 (covid has changed that). I have also been a burlesque dancer and was the creative director and choreographer of a burlesque troupe for 5 years.  I published my first novel last year, Beautiful, Frightening, and Silent. (currently a finalist for the Kindle Awards for the Horror Category). The novel deals with grief, surviving trauma, and domestic violence. A lot of my own experiences have found their way into my work. Social relationships form an important part of our lives and may impact how personality develops over time. Such effects may be narrated by people themselves in stories about relational influence of important others, but it is less clear whether themes of this influence are associated with actual changes. We expect that these results will provide insight into the importance of the perception of relational influence for broader development as well as satisfaction within that relationship. We will test the following research questions: 1. Do themes (i.e., communion, agency, redemption, contamination) of narrated relational influence and narrative valence (i.e., positive vs. negative word use) predict changes in Big 5 personality traits and self-esteem? 2. Pre-registration as part of an experimental psychology course.

The purpose of this practicum was to develop a program to increase high school juniors' and seniors' academic achievement by one grade level, their self-esteem by one level (as measured by the North York Secondary School Self-Concept Inventory), and to increase parent positive responses and interest in the program and its continuation. Examination of 41 Diversified Cooperative Training (DCT) students' cumulative records revealed that 15, or 37%, performed below their ability as proven by comparing the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of the Test of Cognitive Skills, Stanine scores on the Total Language portion of latest Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills, and the first semester grade in their English class. Pretest results of self-esteem inventories showed more than half of this group was below average. The problem was addressed by involving the parents of these students and implementing a 12-week program of Cooperative Consultation with the DCT students' English teacher and their parents. A teacher-made, self-enhancement program was also implemented. Although the objective of having all 15 of the students increase their academic attainment level was not achieved, 80% raised their English grade by one level. The desired level of increased self-esteem was not achieved. Parents showed an increase in positive responses and interest in the consultation program, and it was concluded that the program could be used to increase academic achievement. Sufficient time should be allowed for strategies in self-esteem to be effective. (Seven tables of data are included, and 28 references are attached. We plan to examine the impact of an adverse life event, bereavement, on self-esteem and life satisfaction of both members of a couple. We examine a number of moderators of the effect of bereavement on self-esteem and life satisfaction (i.e., type of relationship with the deceased: family versus non-family) and daily relationship interactions of the couple). We use a dyadic multi-wave longitudinal study with a daily diary component.

The current virtual study explored the impact of doll making on self-esteem. Thirteen participants participated in two conditions of wrap doll making. It was hypothesized that making a social-identity focused wrap doll would increase one’s sense of self-esteem, as compared to those who do not focus on social-identity. Pre- and post test measures of the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES; Rosenberg, 1979) and the Collective Self-Esteem Scale (CSES; Luhtanen and Crocker (1992) were utilized. A two-way mixed ANOVA revealed no significant changes in personal or collective self-esteem for participants in both conditions. However, qualitative data gathered from written responses using a questionnaire reflected three themes of social identity exploration for participants in both the experimental and comparison groups including 1) expressions of connection to one’s community or higher power, 2) expressions of self-empowerment, and 3) embracing the many pieces of one’s complex identity. Recommendations for future research are explored.

Interactional psychology is concerned with the identification of situational characteristics that enhance the prediction of behavior from knowledge of individual characteristics. Ability, self-esteem, and reward contingencies were examined as predictors of individual effort and performance. Hypotheses were developed using the interactionist approach. Sixty people were hired to work for one week in a simulated organization. Although characteristics of both people and the situation influenced effort and performance, there was no evidence of differential validity. The need to consider situational and individual difference characteristics as independent predictors is discussed and examples of future research questions are presented. Past emphasis on maximization of predictive validities without regard to situational effects on levels of performance is criticized. (Author)
