4More Than Machines? - The Attribution Of (In)Animacy To Robot Technology
We know that robots are just machines. Why then do we often talk about them as if they were alive? Laura Voss explores this fascinating phenomenon, providing a rich insight into practices of animacy (and inanimacy) attribution to robot technology: from science-fiction to robotics R&D, from science communication to media discourse, and from the theoretical perspectives of STS to the cognitive sciences. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, and backed by a wealth of empirical material, Voss shows how scientists, engineers, journalists - and everyone else - can face the challenge of robot technology appearing »a little bit alive« with a reflexive and yet pragmatic stance.

6ROBOT MECHANISM CONTROL BY USING HUMAN IRIS MOVEMENT & WITH BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY
By V.Sowmiya, K.M.Jaashika, Ahmed Mudassar Ali
In this generation, every people are tend to do their work with easy and more beneficial methodology with less stress and quick accessing. To do every aspects within an instinct we need an device which can work faster with high accuracy and simple accessing techniques. This will be possible by using mobile device to have easy accessing. To achieve these goals we have made use of the Bluetooth technology with an alternate of eye blink sensor to monitor the human iris movement and to control the robot to do what we need. Though the system parts cost may vary for this we have been making use of the mobile device to control the arduino uno, where this mechanism helps us to move from one place to another by an robot system with an eye blink sensor and ultrasonic sensor to sense the obstacles and it also helps us to reach our target. Using this robot mechanism we can have more advantage by reducing human work by moving to needed targets and accessing anything. We have also included sensors to have trouble-free execution. These all have been controlled by using the mobile application through buttons and voice commands.

22NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900016027: Out-reach In-space Technology Experiments Program: Control Of Flexible Robot Manipulators In Zero Gravity, Experiment Definition Phase
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The results obtained show that it is possible to control light-weight robots with flexible links in a manner that produces good response time and does not induce unacceptable link vibrations. However, deflections induced by gravity cause large static position errors with such a control system. For this reason, it is not possible to use this control system for controlling motion in the direction of gravity. The control system does, on the other hand, have potential for use in space. However, in-space experiments will be needed to verify its applicability to robots moving in three dimensions.

26NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900016248: Technology For An Intelligent, Free-flying Robot For Crew And Equipment Retrieval In Space
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Crew rescue and equipment retrieval is a Space Station Freedom requirement. During Freedom's lifetime, there is a high probability that a number of objects will accidently become separated. Members of the crew, replacement units, and key tools are examples. Retrieval of these objects within a short time is essential. Systems engineering studies were conducted to identify system requirements and candidate approaches. One such approach, based on a voice-supervised, intelligent, free-flying robot was selected for further analysis. A ground-based technology demonstration, now in its second phase, was designed to provide an integrated robotic hardware and software testbed supporting design of a space-borne system. The ground system, known as the EVA Retriever, is examining the problem of autonomously planning and executing a target rendezvous, grapple, and return to base while avoiding stationary and moving obstacles. The current prototype is an anthropomorphic manipulator unit with dexterous arms and hands attached to a robot body and latched in a manned maneuvering unit. A precision air-bearing floor is used to simulate space. Sensor data include two vision systems and force/proximity/tactile sensors on the hands and arms. Planning for a shuttle file experiment is underway. A set of scenarios and strawman requirements were defined to support conceptual development. Initial design activities are expected to begin in late 1989 with the flight occurring in 1994. The flight hardware and software will be based on lessons learned from both the ground prototype and computer simulations.

30Robot Companions: Technology For Humans
By Serge Kernbach
Creation of devices and mechanisms which help people has a long history. Their inventors always targeted practical goals such as irrigation, harvesting, devices for construction sites, measurement, and, last but not least, military tasks for different mechanical and later mechatronic systems. Development of such assisting mechanisms counts back to Greek engineering, came through Middle Ages and led finally in XIX and XX centuries to autonomous devices, which we call today "Robots". This chapter provides overview of several robotic technologies, introduces bio-/chemo- hybrid and collective systems and discuss their applications in service areas.

37Mobile Robot Self-Localization System Using Single Webcam Distance Measurement Technology In Indoor Environments.
By Li, I-Hsum, Chen, Ming-Chang, Wang, Wei-Yen, Su, Shun-Feng and Lai, To-Wen
This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 14 . Abstract A single-webcam distance measurement technique for indoor robot localization is proposed in this paper. The proposed localization technique uses webcams that are available in an existing surveillance environment. The developed image-based distance measurement system (IBDMS) and parallel lines distance measurement system (PLDMS) have two merits. Firstly, only one webcam is required for estimating the distance. Secondly, the set-up of IBDMS and PLDMS is easy, which only one known-dimension rectangle pattern is needed, i.e., a ground tile. Some common and simple image processing techniques, i.e., background subtraction are used to capture the robot in real time. Thus, for the purposes of indoor robot localization, the proposed method does not need to use expensive high-resolution webcams and complicated pattern recognition methods but just few simple estimating formulas. From the experimental results, the proposed robot localization method is reliable and effective in an indoor environment.

39Technology-based Communication Training To Reduce Loneliness In Young People: Experimental Investigation Of Communication Strategies With Social Robot Nao And Voice Assistant Alexa
By Jacqueline Boußard
Young adults account for the largest proportion of loneliness in society (Beam & Kim, 2020). One cause of strong feelings of loneliness can be, among other things, an experi-ence with rejection and a resulting hypersensitivity to rejection. A rejection-sensitive person is afraid of interpersonal relationships because of his or her fear of being rejected and therefore avoids social contacts, but this can exacerbate feelings of loneliness (Watson & Nesdale, 2012). To empower the social communication skills of young adults with rejection sensitivity, both voice assistants and social robots can provide varying degrees of support (Loveys, Fricchione, Kolappa, Sagar, & Broadbent, 2019). There is limited evidence on the extent to which different interactive technologies can help young adults cope with loneliness and the extent to which they can add value as interventions to reduce loneliness (Gasteiger, Loveys, Law, & Broadbent, 2021). The use of technology for loneliness intervention is particularly useful with young adults because they acquire technical skills naturally as they become familiar with information and communication technologies (Prensky, 2001). The object of this research is to investigate the extent to which an intervention with interactive technology successfully reduces feel-ings of loneliness in young people and considers the role of rejection sensitivity. It can be assumed that individuals with a high level of rejection sensitivity would not open in an inter-vention with real people, or would do so only with difficulty, due to their avoidance of social contact. There is also a lack of empirical evidence on how differently young people perceive hu-man-like attributes to interactive technology and how this ultimately affects communication training with these technology (Ananto & Young, 2021). Thus, there is a growing need for discourse on the extent to which social robots and voice assistants can serve as an inter-vention to combat loneliness in young adults, as this group of people is where the greatest need exists (Jones et al., 2021). To address this need, insights are needed into which technology is appropriate for as many young adults as possible and promises the greatest success. So, this study will follow the research question how differently technology-based communi-cation training with social robots, or the voice assistant affects young adults' feelings of loneliness, considering the human-likeliness of the interaction with these interactive tech-nologies. The research assumes that technology-based communication training can assist in relearning social communication with real social contacts. To this end, more detailed findings are needed on the extent to which young adults interact with both technologies with different degrees of human-likeliness and which of the two technologies can reduce post-intervention loneliness the most. Direct comparison of personal voice assistant and social robot will reveal the extent to which technology is more appropriate for young adults. It will be observed to what extent there is a possible amplification of the effect due to the rejection sensitivity of the interacting individuals.

40NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20100012838: Low-Cost Rescue Robot For Disaster Management In A Developing Country: Development Of A Prototype Using Locally Available Technology
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The use of robots in different fields is common and effective in developed countries. In case of incident management or emergency rescue after a disaster, robots are often used to lessen the human effort where it is either impossible or life-threatening for rescuers. Though developed countries can afford robotic-effort for pro-disaster management, the scenario is totally opposite for developing and under-developed countries to engage such a machine-help due to high cost of the machines and high maintenance cost as well. In this research paper, the authors proposed a low-cost "Rescue-Robot" for pro-disaster management which can overcome the budget-constraints as well as fully capable of rescue purposes for incident management. Here, all the research works were performed in Bangladesh - a developing country in South Asia. A disaster struck structure was chosen and a thorough survey was performed to understand the real-life environment for the prototype. The prototype was developed considering the results of this survey and it was manufactured using all locally available components and facilities.

43DTIC ADA458562: Human-System Technology: Human-Robot Interaction To Address Critical Navy Needs Of The Present And Future
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) is pleased to submit a report of progress on the project Human Systems Technology for the 2005 fiscal year. This fiscal year work began on May 1, 2005 and was completed on July 31, 2006. Also called Human-Centered Computing, this multidisciplinary field exploits advances in cognitive research together with those in computer science and related areas to optimize the cognitive, perceptual, and/or physical performance of experts and expert teams and the information systems that support them. The FY 2005 work focused in particular on the following: (1) psychophysical studies of tactile interfaces for sensory substitution or augmentation in complex tasks; (2) continued development of advanced algorithms for Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) from large data sets and associated investigations of displays and training principles to improve human abilities to recognize causal relationships; (3) fundamental studies of the trustworthiness of agents through a theory of adjustable autonomy; and (4) fundamental studies of exoskeletons for human performance enhancement. The work in each of these areas reflects the growing appreciation for the enormous potential that information technology has to leverage and amplify human capabilities. Realization of this potential requires a deep understanding of human cognition, perception, and/or locomotion; the relevant areas of computer science; and the nature of the human activity to be enabled. This report describes the progress that was made in each of these research areas in FY 2005. For each area the authors describe the objective of the work and the approach taken; provide a concise progress statement and an expanded description of accomplishments; and list relevant publications, awards, patents, and technology transfer activities.

47DTIC AD1009866: A Guide For Developing Human-Robot Interaction Experiments In The Robotic Interactive Visualization And Experimentation Technology (RIVET) Simulation
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Robotic Interactive Visualization and Experimentation Technology (RIVET) is a computer-based simulation system that was developed to merge game-based technologies with current and next-generation robotic development. The original design of RIVET specifically addressed engineering-related functionality, including the capability to test critical algorithms prior to field testing a robotic system, perform rapid consecutive test scenarios to find software bugs, and conduct algorithm verification across a wide spectrum of test scenarios. While these functional test procedures have been shown to be essential, the design of this game-based platform also lends itself to human-in-the-loop (HITL) experimentation. This technical report outlines the capabilities of RIVET as a Human Factors platform for HITL human-robot interaction (HRI) experimentation. It further provides a primer for HRI experimentation development for the nonprogrammer with example Torque Script files and step-by-step instructions to develop the virtual environment. Additional recommendations for collecting subjective and objective human data related to HRI are discussed.

4Where We Got the Bible: Our Debt to the Catholic Church
By Rev. Henry Grey Graham
In "Where We Got the Bible", the author, himself a convert from Calvinism, explains how the Catholic Church compiled the sacred text, how medieval monks preserved it, and how Catholic scholars first gave Christians the Bible in their own languages.<br><br> This little book about the Bible grew out of lectures which the writer delivered on the subject to mixed audiences. The lectures were afterwards expanded, and appeared in a series of articles in the Catholic press 1908-9, and are now with slight alterations reprinted. Their origin will sufficiently account for the colloquial style employed throughout. <br><br> There is, therefore, no pretense either of profound scholarship or of eloquent language; all that is attempted is a popular and, as far as possible, accurate exposition along familiar lines of the Catholic claim historically in regard to the Bible. It is candidly controversial without, however, let us hope, being uncharitable or unfair. (Adapted from the book)

6Treatise on Bread, and Bread-Making
By Sylvester Graham
Sylvester Graham, also known as the "Father of Vegetarianism", was a Presbyterian minister who emphasized clean eating. Graham endorsed the consumption of unprocessed foods, as close in kind as possible to those consumed by our wild ancestors. Whole-grain bread was a favorite topic of his, and in this treatise he expounds upon the origins, benefits, and production of the healthiest bread possible.<br><br> Graham's message about healthy living exploded in popularity after an 1832 cholera outbreak in New York City. On his lecture tour after the publication of A Treatise on Bread, and Bread-Making in 1837, he was thronged with admirers, although his lecture circuit was interrupted by angry butchers and commercial bakers. His ideas about the connection between food and physical and spiritual health inspired the Kelloggs, and the Graham cracker is named after him. (Summary by Tatiana Chichilla)

10Gentle Art of Tramping
By Stephen Graham

Stephen Graham tramped extensively around pre-revolutionary Russia, and with immigrants as they landed on the East coast of America and spread West. This book, published in 1926, is his practical guide to this mode of touring/travel. It is also a philosophical account of our desire to connect with nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson style. A prolific writer, Graham describes his love of nature, and his dislike of industrialization. Encouraging people to take up 'tramping' for pleasure (as opposed to vagabonding or homelessness), Graham offers practical tips and insights into travelling safely, with as much ease as possible, that are still applicable today. He hoped that his simple but beautifully written guide would ignite a love for nature and seeing the world, even on a shoestring budget; entertain readers with his often humorous observations and tales; and encourage other tramps to keep journals and share their adventures.
