The title of this volume, "Learning Languages in the Digital Age," focuses on the integration of technology to promote authentic and interactive communication within and outside the walls of the language classroom. Major innovations have shifted Internet use from a consumer to a participatory model; that is, previously, Internet users were placed in the role of consumers who had access to materials and information (this phase of Internet integration is commonly referred to as Web 1.0). Now Internet users can become producers of resources themselves (Web 2.0 is a term used to describe this shift in Internet use from a consumer model to a participatory model). While traditional consumer and communication applications continue, widespread participation as producers of resources has jumped dramatically. Blogging, podcasting, Wikis, and other forms of democratized media are all examples of applications that promise to challenge traditional systems and roles and to enhance the nature of language teaching and learning. This shift from consumer to producer allows language learners to take a more active role in the learning process, participate in authentic communication and create products that can serve as authentic assessment of language production. This volume provides the theoretical foundation for effective language teaching and learning while providing practical applications for the language classroom. Each of the three sections represents an important aspect of language education designed to promote best practices and to increase student achievement: (1) Embracing Technology: Tools Teachers Can Use to Improve Language Learning; (2) Teacher Education and Professional Development: Agents of Change; and (3) Teaching Culture through Divergent Paths.

7Information Modeling Of Complex Automated Process Control Systems, Based On Mivar Technology

By

The aim of our research is to create intelligent automated process control systems (DCS) and the study of possible applications of such control systems. In broad terms, can be considered as a process control system diagnostics and automated process control, process control can therefore be applied in the field of information security. Mivarnye model control systems are based on the software package BOA performing inference with linear computational complexity. Students successfully create a logical model mivarnye control systems for complex technological installations in the industry. The complex BOA is implemented based on cloud technologies and is available on the project website MIVAR www.mivar.org.

12DTIC ADA256366: Software Technology For Adaptable, Reliable Systems (STARS) Program. The Cleanroom Engineering Software Development Process

By

Cleanroom provides software developers with the basis for developing software under statistical quality control. Software is functionally verified and certified, not tested, using sampling techniques, thus permitting software developers to assert a mean time to failure (MTTF) for the software modules they develop. Under the STARS Contract, the IBM STARS team developed a process manual to assist software development organizations in adopting and installing the Cleanroom Engineering Software Development Process. This manual describes the process and verification activities required for performing a Cleanroom Engineering effort from the standpoint of specifiers, developers, certifiers, and managers. The manual was developed to support process improvement programs directed at improving software quality and development productivity by incorporating some or all of the Cleanroom Engineering software development technologies into their current software development process and practices.

14DTIC ADA230123: Improving Technology Insertion In Existing Air Force Weapon Systems Through The AFLC Modification Process

By

Current trends indicate that the majority of the aircraft that will be operating in the USAF in the year 2000 are already sitting on Air Force flight lines. These aircraft will be the backbone of our force structure well into the 21st century. However, these aircraft are aging. A key to the USAF retaining affordable combat capability is inserting evolving technologies into older weapon systems through the modification process. A review of Air Force policy on modification management reveals that technology insertion is not directed. Air Force Logistics Command (AFLC) has established several programs to facilitate technology insertion, but has not evaluated modification management to determine if technology insertion is being accomplished efficiently and effectively. In addition, there are numerous impediments and barriers to technology insertion. Improving technology insertion in existing weapon systems can only be done if AFLC System Program Managers make it a personal priority to ensure that technology insertion is accomplished on the weapon systems they manage.

By

A layered architecture is fundamental to the megaprogramming approach being followed by the Air Force/STARS Demonstration Project, as engineers develop the Space Command and Control Architectural Infrastructure application for NORAD and USSPACECOM. This layering strategy also applies to the Software Engineering Environment (SEE) being used to support the application development. This paper focuses on one particular SEE layer: a layer that leverages one of an organization's most valued assets - its process - and uses it as a basis for SEE integration. The activity to produce and use the PSE has yielded useful lessons learned which can guide other organizations as they pursue their own process-driven SEEs.

18DTIC ADA389565: DOD INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Software And Systems Process Improvement Programs Vary In Use Of Best Practices

By

With an annual information technology budget of about $20 billion, and tens of billions more budgeted for technology embedded in sophisticated weaponry, the Department of Defense (DOD) relies heavily on software-intensive systems to support military operations and associated business functions, such as logistics, personnel, and financial management. One important determinant of the quality of these systems, and thus DOD s mission performance, is the quality of the processes used to develop, acquire, and engineer them. Recognizing the importance of these processes to producing systems that perform as intended and meet cost and schedule commitments, successful public and private organizations have adopted and implemented software/systems process improvement (SPI) programs.1

19DTIC ADA292766: Leveraging Your Process Definition Investment To Support The Planning, Acquisition And Performance Of Software Projects (Software Technology For Adaptable, Reliable Systems (STARS) Program).

By

The STARS program was instituted to develop technology to support the megaprogramming of software systems, or systems in which software is a part. Developing software using the megaprogramming approach involves following a defined process to develop software, using the concepts of architecture-based and component reuse. STARS is currently in its technology demonstration phase, where the three STARS prime contractors are each paired with a military service team to use STARS megaprogramming concepts to develop and field a software system. Experiences by all three STARS contractors, as well as experience on all three STARS demonstration projects, have shown that defining enactable (or executable) processes is a time-consuming activity. Further, organizations are not taking full advantage of this investment from the standpoints of project and product-quality planning. The purpose of this paper is to describe how process definitions can be leveraged to support software project and software system acquisition planning, project management, and project performance.
