9ERIC EJ1062482: The Complementary Effects Of Empathy And Nonverbal Communication Training On Persuasion Capabilities

This paper investigates the possible complementary effects that training in empathy and nonverbal communication may have on persuasion capabilities. The narrative considers implications from the literature and describes an exploratory study in which students, in a managerial setting, were trained in empathy and nonverbal communication. Subsequent evaluations of these students by faculty evaluators and the students themselves provide preliminary evidence that training in empathy, on the one hand, and nonverbal communication on the other can be effective, but concurrent training in both of these is superior to concentration in only one. This is the first research report which deals with such concurrent training and its impact on persuasion effectiveness in business communication.

The topics explored in previous research on persuasion consisted of physical attractiveness, indirect knowledge of influence, tactics used by children and college age students, tactics used by women in different cultures, stereotypical tactics, and gender influence on persuasion. To date, there has been an absence of research on dating and single college age females and their use of nonverbal, verbal, liking and authoritative persuasion techniques on college age males, leading to the topics researched in this study. It was concluded that the nonverbal and liking persuasion techniques were the most effective. This study also found that females in relationships do not always get their way more often than females who are not in relationships. (Contains 52 references. 29ERIC ED573470: The Power Of Persuasion: A Model For Effective Political Leadership By State Chiefs. Linking State And Local School Improvement

State chiefs have new responsibilities under the Every Student Succeeds Act, but their formal powers are still limited. Despite these constraints, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) analysis finds that chiefs can make a difference by wielding their powers strategically, to build coalitions and persuade others. While turnover in the field is high, with 70% of current chiefs on the job less than two years, newcomers are taking their seats at a time of opportunity. Drawing on interviews with current and former state chiefs, authors Hill and Jochim identify chiefs' opportunities for influence in light of the ideas in Richard E. Neustadt's 1960 book, "Presidential Power and the Modern Presidents: The Politics of Leadership." The analysis and concrete examples are intended to help current and aspiring chiefs understand how to use their authorities as the basis of bargaining, build their professional reputation, and approach decision-making. Key takeaways include: (1) Chiefs should fully understand their own advantages and think hard about how to bargain effectively with others in the state capital and in school districts; (2) Developing new coalitions takes time and sustained attention. By pulling together broader coalitions than normally control education policy, chiefs can expand the horizons of possibility; (3) To build a personal reputation for effectiveness, a chief must have and be known to have strong and specific goals to build something new or to change the status quo--and communicate them to those affected or those who may serve as a source of support; and (4) In order to maximize power, chiefs must approach every decision as an opportunity to strengthen their future effectiveness. This paper is part of a series of publications from CRPE's "Linking State and Local School Improvement" initiative, meant to inform state education leaders, policymakers, and advocacy groups about how to best support promising local school improvement efforts.

In applying Ernest Becker's work on self-esteem to Erving Goffman's theory of interpersonal society, this paper suggests that Goffman's views about the politeness structure of face-to-face society might be viewed as largely grounded in a basic motivation for individuals to avoid anxiety due to loss of self-esteem. The paper uses this application as the conceptual basis of a model of interpersonal persuasion that consists of the elements self-esteem, social knowledge, a repertoire of strategies, and an instrumental orientation. The model is explicated and then partially tested by examining correlational data on indicants of the four elements of the model and actual success at persuasion in a laboratory dyadic communication setting. The reported results suggest general support for the model. (Author/FL)

The threat of nuclear war has been a possibility since the first atomic device was invented during World War II. From the end of World War II through the Cold War period, the greatest risk of nuclear proliferation was between the main superpowers at the time, the United States and the Soviet Union. U.S. nuclear deterrence doctrine promised mutually assured destruction (MAD): if the Soviets were to launch a nuclear missile at the United States, the United States would retaliate in such a way to ensure the annihilation of the Soviet Union. The global economic, social, and political environment has changed since the end of the Cold War; however, the threat of atomic warfare still exists with the emergence of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea as a nuclear threat. This thesis explores the question of whether the doctrine developed during the Cold War is still valid: Is the U.S. nuclear strategy sufficient to deter North Korea from attacking the United States and its allies in the East Asian region? In formulating an answer to the question, the author analyzed the motivations, perceptions, and intentions of North Korea’s regime from the country’s formation to present day. While it is clear that the original Cold War MAD doctrine will not work for North Korea, it is recommended that the right combination of MAD elements, conventional forces, UN sanctions, and negotiations will provide a chance for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula to become a reality.

38Computational Aspects Of Private Bayesian Persuasion

We study computational questions in a game-theoretic model that, in particular, aims to capture advertising/persuasion applications such as viral marketing. Specifically, we consider a multi-agent Bayesian persuasion model where an informed sender (marketer) tries to persuade a group of agents (consumers) to adopt a certain product. The quality of the product is known to the sender, but it is unknown to the agents. The sender is allowed to commit to a signaling policy where she sends a private signal---say, a viral marketing ad---to every agent. This work studies the computation aspects of finding a signaling policy that maximizes the sender's revenue. We show that if the sender's utility is a submodular function of the set of agents that adopt the product, then we can efficiently find a signaling policy whose revenue is at least (1-1/e) times the optimal. We also prove that approximating the sender's optimal revenue by a factor better than (1-1/e) is NP-hard and, hence, the developed approximation guarantee is essentially tight. When the senders' utility is a function of the number of agents that adopt the product (i.e., the utility function is anonymous), we show that an optimal signaling policy can be computed in polynomial time. Our results are based on an interesting connection between the Bayesian persuasion problem and the evaluation of the concave closure of a set function.

Elinor, the more sensible of the two, falls for Edward Ferrars, a match that seems much more suitable. All of these pleasant connections are, however, soon disrupted. Willoughby leaves and ignores Marianne. Elinor finds out an unexpected secret about Ferrars that puts her on her caution in pursuing their relationship. As these complications develop, Marianne soon finds herself distraught despite having attracted another suitor, the reliable, but older, Colonel Brandon. Elinor steps into the breach to try to help her sister regain her equilibrium. Both learn what a broken heart can feel like and adjust in their own separate ways.               <i>Love and Freindship</i> [sic] is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790, when Austen was 14 years old. <i>Love and Freindship</i> (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. A potential marriage prospect must make “sense” by bringing with it enough assets and income to permit the couple to continue to live in happy, idle leisure, complete with servants and a prestigious address.               This recording includes a selection of Jane Austen's letters, edited by Susan Coolidge and chosen from the collection of Austen's great-nephew, Edward, Lord Brabourne. It includes "Love & Freindship" and "Lesley Castle" both told through the medium of letters written by the characters. It also contains her wonderful "History of England" and a "Collection of Letters" and lastly a chapter containing "Scraps".<br /><br /> In these offerings, we may see the beginnings of Miss Austen's literary style. We may also discern traces of characters that we encounter in her later works. G. K. Chesterton in his preface, for example, says of a passage in Love and Freindship; "... is there not the foreshadowing of another and more famous father; and do we not hear for a moment, in the rustic cottage by the Uske, the unmistakable voice of Mr. Bennet?" Morland by name, Lackland by nature, Catherine, not altogether addicted to the heroine role in general, finds this greatness thrust upon her in the (fortunately, principally financial) fantasies of her would-be inamorato's father, the General.               The Watsons is one of two novels that Jane Austen left unfinished at her death in 1817. The premise of The Watsons was known to Austen’s family, and her niece Catherine Hubback wrote a novel using this premise entitled The Younger Sister that was published in 1850, albeit with considerable differences from the novel fragment Austen left behind. In 1871, Austen’s nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh published a revised and enlarged edition of his 1869 biography of Austen, and this second edition included the previously unpublished manuscript of The Watsons along with an introduction by Austen-Leigh.<br><br> In 1923, The Watsons appeared in print again, this time with the story continued by an author identified as L. Oulton. Unlike Hubback’s The Younger Sister, this publication is a true continuation of Austen’s The Watsons, including Austen’s text as she wrote it. Although Austen had not indicated chapter divisions in her text, Oulton’s continuation includes Austen’s text as the first five and a half chapters and supplements these with an additional thirteen and a half chapters as well as Austen-Leigh’s 1871 introduction. Austen’s text comprises just over half of the novel because Oulton’s chapters are so much shorter. With nineteen chapters total, this version of The Watsons is shorter than any of the novels Austen completed in her lifetime. Almost nothing is known about L. Oulton, not even what “L.” stands for nor whether this name is a pseudonym. The Oulton continuation of The Watsons fared poorly among the critics, but it has the distinction of being the first true continuation of The Watsons in a long line of The Watsons continuations; the trend of writing continuations of The Watsons has become increasingly popular with the rise of Jane Austen fan fiction, particularly in the 21st century. - Summary by David Purdy
