4ERIC ED315090: Online Searching And The Status Of Librarianship. An Inquiry, Spring 1988.

By

This study investigated the impact of online bibliographic retrieval on the librarian's professional self-image. The question of online searching and professional status is raised primarily in response to Brian Nielsen's work in 1980 and 1982, and also motivated by the relatively low volume of work on this topic since Nielsen. A major aim of this study was to evaluate whether Nielsen's predictions about online searching deprofessionalizing librarianship were beginning to be realized. The study consisted of 8 interviews, lasting from 45 minutes to 3 hours, with librarians who do and supervise online searching in a variety of disciplines and settings. Thirty-three questions were asked under conditions of privacy to establish the basic background facts of each respondent's situation, and to elicit their perceptions of the effect of online searching on: (1) their image; (2) their role as teacher or as intermediary; (3) their interaction with patrons and end users; (4) their careers; and (5) their own personal attitudes toward online searching and its impact on their professional status. It was concluded that, although automation has made many tasks more routine, its effects have been an enhancement. In most situations where searches were being negotiated, librarians felt that they gave patrons more individualized attention. Furthermore, librarians generally felt that the addition of a computer had a professionalizing effect on librarianship. Copies of the interview questions and privacy statement are appended. 11GARY ZELINSKI Aut. May 2025 A Walk Among Heroes Searching For America's Better Angels (online Audio Converter.com)

By

Gary Zelinski, author, essayist and photographer, captures a beautiful collection of stories about some of well-known, and some not-so-well-known, American heroes interred in Arlington National Cemetery.  “Zelinski does a masterful job weaving his photos and stories into something extraordinary. Reading about the two officers who lost their lives while serving at the NRO and Gary’s way of honoring their spouses’ service tells of the toll they also paid for our freedom. As a former Deputy Director of the National Reconnaissance Office, I know that these officers and many others resting at Arlington are our Nation’s unsung heroes who served while guarding our Nation’s secrets.” Steve Denker , Major General, USAF (Retired) https://garyzelinski.com/

12ERIC ED262823: High School Students, Libraries, And The Search Process. An Analysis Of Student Materials And Facilities Usage Patterns In Delaware Following Introduction Of Online Bibliographic Database Searching.

By

This report assesses the impact of instruction in online bibliographic database searching on high school students' use of library materials and facilities in three Delaware secondary schools (one public, one parochial, and one private) during the spring of 1984. Most students involved in the analysis were given a brief explanation of online bibliographic searching and instruction in search strategy. They were encouraged to prepare a search request for the topic they had selected for their research assignment. The databases used were selected by a professional librarian. Completed searches, containing documents of potential use to the students, were returned to the students. A critical incident analysis was conducted on the following data: copies of the bibliographies of the student papers (132); questionnaires completed by students in class at the time assignments were due (175); records of student searches (111); and interviews with cooperating school library media specialists (7 teachers and 3 librarians). Following an introduction, discussion of rationale, and description of evaluation design, this report presents observations and implications from data analysis on the following topics: student use of facilities; student material preferences; school library role in delivering documents; age of books used; currency of magazines used; focus of magazine use; use of online references; currency of online references; the most heavily used database; and cost of online searching. Sections on clarifying educational objectives and a summary and recommendations are included. Numerous appendices and tables support the research report. (THC)

21ERIC ED270113: Identification And Analysis Of Factors Affecting End Use Online Searching.

By

Mail surveys designed to determine the current status of end user online searching were sent to three populations: 473 faculty members in 12 departments at 20 universities, online search coordinators in 89 academic libraries, and 15 library school educators. Direct interviews with 10 university faculty members were also conducted. Faculty were surveyed with respect to access to computing resources, familiarity with online searching, and information sources supporting teaching and research needs. Online coordinators were surveyed to identify existing and proposed library-based programs for educating end users. Library science faculty were asked to assess the impact of end user searching on libraries and library school curricula. Direct interviews with faculty who were occasional online users dealt with an evaluation of online searching as an information support for teaching and research. Faculty results indicated a high level of familiarity with online searching but only a moderate level of end user searching. Low level of searching was attributed to lack of computing resources, familiarity with only limited systems, lack of funding, and lack of perceived need. The survey of online coordinators identified several existing or proposed library programs for educating users. The overall reaction of library educators was that library schools are attempting to prepare future librarians to work with a computer-literate end-user population interested in acquiring information directly. All of the faculty members interviewed endorsed the concept of end user searching, but most professed reluctance to do their own searching. It was concluded that a vacuum still exists between the potentially useful resources of academic libraries and the information needs of potential user groups. (Author/THC)

23Online Searching With Turn Cost

By

We consider the problem of searching for an object on a line at an unknown distance OPT from the original position of the searcher, in the presence of a cost of d for each time the searcher changes direction. This is a generalization of the well-studied linear-search problem. We describe a strategy that is guaranteed to find the object at a cost of at most 9*OPT + 2d, which has the optimal competitive ratio 9 with respect to OPT plus the minimum corresponding additive term. Our argument for upper and lower bound uses an infinite linear program, which we solve by experimental solution of an infinite series of approximating finite linear programs, estimating the limits, and solving the resulting recurrences. We feel that this technique is interesting in its own right and should help solve other searching problems. In particular, we consider the star search or cow-path problem with turn cost, where the hidden object is placed on one of m rays emanating from the original position of the searcher. For this problem we give a tight bound of (1+(2(m^m)/((m-1)^(m-1))) OPT + m ((m/(m-1))^(m-1) - 1) d. We also discuss tradeoff between the corresponding coefficients, and briefly consider randomized strategies on the line.

27DTIC AD1005137: Searching For Information Online: Using Big Data To Identify The Concerns Of Potential Army Recruits

By

In this report, we assess some empirical applications of web search data and discuss the prospective value such data can offer to Army recruiting efforts. We discuss three different toolsGoogle Trends, Google AdWords, and Google Correlatethat can be used to access and analyze readily available, anonymous data from Internet searches related to the Army and to Army service. We find that Google search queries can be used to better understand how interest in military careers has evolved over time and geographic location, and even identify the foremost Army-related concerns that potential recruits experience. Moreover, it is possible to predict with reasonable accuracy what non-Army related terms people are searching for in the months before or after an Army query. Finally, our results suggest that search terms can serve as a measure of propensity and can be used to predict the overall proportion of highly qualified Army accessions. We close with a brief discussion of the implications that can be drawn and fruitful areas for future research.

30ERIC ED352970: Online/CD-ROM Bibliographic Database Searching In A Small Academic Library.

By

The purpose of the project described in this paper was to gather information about online/CD-ROM database systems that would be useful in improving the services offered at the University of Findlay, a small private liberal arts college in northwestern Ohio. A survey was sent to 67 libraries serving colleges similar in size which included questions on: (1) whether the libraries offer online bibliographic services, CD-ROM searching, or both; (2) whether the services are equally available to all groups served by the library; (3) who pays for the services and how the fee is determined; (4) if libraries advertise their search capabilities, how they do so; and (5) where the online search workstation is located. Completed surveys were received from 57 institutions with a student population between 1,000 and 3,000. Most of the respondents offered both online and CD-ROM services. Virtually every library made search services available to both library staff and to faculty. Almost all of the libraries offered their search capacities to undergraduate students. About a third charged no fees for online search services. Of the two-thirds that charged, about half charged on the basis of connect time costs and half charged according to the status of the requester. Ninety percent of the respondents advertised their services through bibliographic instruction, in-library promotion, campus-wide promotion, and other methods. The search workstation is likely to be located in a room by itself, but many terminals are also found in the reference room. Librarians conducted online searches in the great majority of cases while patrons searched CD-ROM databases. Faculty research was the most common reason for conducting a search. Only a quarter of the respondents had a written policy for conducting searches. Nearly half of the respondents conducted fewer than six searches each month. A copy of the survey and cover letter sent to the libraries is appended. (Contains 32 references.) (KRN)

31ERIC ED411813: Twenty Years Of Training In Online Searching: Integrating The Internet With The Teaching Programme.

By

The Internet and its features such as e-mail; listservs; FTP and Telnet; navigators such as Archie, gophers, and the World Wide Web; and Web search engines have had a profound effect on the nature of online systems. This paper discusses the effect the Internet might have in the way online searching should be taught. The paper provides background on the history of online search instruction since the mid-1970s. Guidelines are provided to academic staff for ways to integrate these changes into their online search courses, for example: the basics of Internet searching, studying and evaluating World Wide Web Search engines, essentials of hypertext markup language (HTML), principles and practices of Web home page design, and rendering information services via the Internet. This paper represents an effort to isolate aspects relevant to current online searching techniques and to integrate these with established instructional methods. This same approach has been followed when discussing teaching online searching procedures: that is, to select and integrate relevant Internet procedures with the training program. The instructional objectives, learning content, and practical lessons are provided as examples, and serve as a frame of reference for further development by a specific training unit. (Contains 19 references.) (Author/SWC)

By

This paper discusses the results of a project designed to gather data that the Library Media Coordinators of DeKalb County (Georgia) Schools can use to evaluate several aspects of online searching in the county's secondary schools. The project, involving responses from library media specialists (LMSs) from 24 DeKalb secondary schools (5 junior high schools and 19 high schools), sought answers to the following research questions: (1) Is the amount budgeted per school for CLASSMATE online searching adequate? (2) How is online searching being used in each school and with what results? (3) What is the general feeling or perception of the LMSs toward its use? (4) Are more inservices or staff development programs needed in this area for LMSs and/or teachers? and (5) What can be done at the district level to enhance the use of online searching for the students? Overall, the report reveals that LMSs had a positive attitude toward online searching. Responses to the questionnaire, however, indicate improvements are needed in training LMSs and teachers in online service usage. The CLASSMATE Online Searching questionnaire and cover letter are appended. (GLR)

33Searching For Truth: Internet Search Patterns As A Method Of Investigating Online Responses To A Russian Illicit Drug Policy Debate.

By

This article is from Journal of Medical Internet Research , volume 14 . Abstract Background: This is a methodological study investigating the online responses to a national debate over an important health and social problem in Russia. Russia is the largest Internet market in Europe, exceeding Germany in the absolute number of users. However, Russia is unusual in that the main search provider is not Google, but Yandex. Objective: This study had two main objectives. First, to validate Yandex search patterns against those provided by Google, and second, to test this method's adequacy for investigating online interest in a 2010 national debate over Russian illicit drug policy. We hoped to learn what search patterns and specific search terms could reveal about the relative importance and geographic distribution of interest in this debate. Methods: A national drug debate, centering on the anti-drug campaigner Egor Bychkov, was one of the main Russian domestic news events of 2010. Public interest in this episode was accompanied by increased Internet search. First, we measured the search patterns for 13 search terms related to the Bychkov episode and concurrent domestic events by extracting data from Google Insights for Search (GIFS) and Yandex WordStat (YaW). We conducted Spearman Rank Correlation of GIFS and YaW search data series. Second, we coded all 420 primary posts from Bychkov's personal blog between March 2010 and March 2012 to identify the main themes. Third, we compared GIFS and Yandex policies concerning the public release of search volume data. Finally, we established the relationship between salient drug issues and the Bychkov episode. Results: We found a consistent pattern of strong to moderate positive correlations between Google and Yandex for the terms "Egor Bychkov" (rs = 0.88, P < .001), “Bychkov” (rs = .78, P < .001) and “Khimki”(rs = 0.92, P < .001). Peak search volumes for the Bychkov episode were comparable to other prominent domestic political events during 2010. Monthly search counts were 146,689 for “Bychkov” and 48,084 for “Egor Bychkov”, compared to 53,403 for “Khimki” in Yandex. We found Google potentially provides timely search results, whereas Yandex provides more accurate geographic localization. The correlation was moderate to strong between search terms representing the Bychkov episode and terms representing salient drug issues in Yandex–“illicit drug treatment” (rs = .90, P < .001), "illicit drugs" (rs = .76, P < .001), and "drug addiction" (rs = .74, P < .001). Google correlations were weaker or absent–"illicit drug treatment" (rs = .12, P = .58), “illicit drugs ” (rs = -0.29, P = .17), and "drug addiction" (rs = .68, P < .001). Conclusions: This study contributes to the methodological literature on the analysis of search patterns for public health. This paper investigated the relationship between Google and Yandex, and contributed to the broader methods literature by highlighting both the potential and limitations of these two search providers. We believe that Yandex Wordstat is a potentially valuable, and underused data source for researchers working on Russian-related illicit drug policy and other public health problems. The Russian Federation, with its large, geographically dispersed, and politically engaged online population presents unique opportunities for studying the evolving influence of the Internet on politics and policy, using low cost methods resilient against potential increases in censorship.

36ERIC ED258585: Searching The Online Public Access Catalog. Final Report.

By

A study of ways in which users conduct subject searches with an online public access catalog (OPAC) was performed at the College Park Campus of the University of Maryland. Both process (search patterns) and product (search results) variables were examined with respect to individual characteristics of 39 volunteers, many of whom were master's level (64%) library science (62%) students. The OPAC used is menu-driven, and provides access through author, title, combined author/title, subject (LC subject headings), keyword, and number; boolean searching was not fully implemented at the time of the study. Each subject was asked to complete two search tasks, one straightforward and easy to complete, and the other open-ended and more difficult. They were then asked to list the call numbers of relevant items and to fill out a questionnaire designed to ascertain user satisfaction and demographic information. Results were considered for three criterion measures: user satisfaction, number of hits, and relevancy score. It was found that (1) the subjects used the OPAC with relative ease and the degree of success and satisfaction obtained was relatively high; (2) most subjects preferred subject heading to keyword searching, and (3) there was no evidence of strong relationships between search type or search results and individual characteristics. 37ERIC ED267099: At Home With ERIC: Online Searching From Your Home Computer. "After Dark" Edition.

By

This manual provides information to aid home computer owners in performing literature searches of ERIC and other education and social science databases using the BRS Information Technologies "After Dark" system. Assuming some familiarity with printed ERIC indexes or online searches, this manual is divided into five chapters. It is suggested that potential searchers should study the first two chapters before going online. These chapters cover the basic concepts of developing a search strategy and the commands used by the BRS "After Dark" system. The third chapter disucsses various ways to modify the search strategy regarding the retrieval of too few or too many citations. The next chapter explains how to accomplish common types of non-subject searches: specific author, publications from a specific institution, speeches from a specific meeting, or certain types of publications. The final chapter provides basic information concerning other searchable databases: Educational Testing Service Test Collection; Exceptional Child Education Resources; Mental Measurement Yearbook; Psychological Abstracts; and Resources in Computer Education. Attachments include: Search Strategy Worksheet; ERIC Field Name and Abbreviations; "After Dark" Command Summary; Mandatory Level Descriptors; and Publication Type Codes. (PN)

38ERIC ED243483: A Survey Of Online Bibliographic Searching In The Reference Department Of A Medium-Sized University Library.

By

This paper describes the development of online bibliographic searching at Lamar University, a state-supported university in Beaumont, Texas, and the results of a 1983 users' survey evaluating satisfaction with online searching services. Online searching is defined and its advantages and disadvantages are briefly outlined. The equipment used in searching, the training of searchers, administrative procedures, charging practices, and publicity provided for online searching services are described. Two major findings of a survey of 33 users of online services (with a response rate of 67%) are reported: most searches were done in the areas of business, education, science, and technology; and many users stated that less than 50% of the citations generated were useful in their particular research. Recommendations for improving the service focus on equipment, facilities, statistical recordkeeping, continued user evaluation, and revisions of the library's procedures manual. Appendices provide data on the number of searches conducted, the most frequently searched databases, and average search costs by database. A sample search request form, promotional material on online searching, a sample user questionnaire, and a sample statistical recordkeeping form are also provided. (ESR)

39ERIC EJ1042709: Student Search Behaviour In An Online Public Access Catalogue: An Examination Of "Searching Mental Models" And "Searcher Self-Concept"

By

Introduction: This paper presents a qualitative exploration of university students' experience of searching an online public access catalogue. The study investigated how students conceptualise their searching process, as well as how students understand themselves as seekers of information. Method: Following a search task, thirty-eight university students were interviewed using a qualitative, semi-structured interview design. The interviews explored students' experience of searching, conceptualised aspects of their searches, their information seeking strategies, confidence in searching, and any difficulties encountered. Analysis: The interviews were analysed using a grounded theory approach. The analysis involved iterative review and constant comparison of the transcripts, including line-by-line open coding followed by a second round of focused coding. Results: The results of the project present an emergent theory that explores a set of conceptual patterns in students' searching mental model of online systems, a typology of searchers' perceptions of their information retrieval skills (i.e., their searcher self-concept), and categorisation of types of searchers. Conclusion: With increased knowledge of how students conceptualise their search process and view themselves as seekers of information, educators and information professionals can work more effectively with students to search for the literature of their disciplines. Similarly, system designers can devise interfaces that suit students' needs.

42Online Searching With An Autonomous Robot

By

We discuss online strategies for visibility-based searching for an object hidden behind a corner, using Kurt3D, a real autonomous mobile robot. This task is closely related to a number of well-studied problems. Our robot uses a three-dimensional laser scanner in a stop, scan, plan, go fashion for building a virtual three-dimensional environment. Besides planning trajectories and avoiding obstacles, Kurt3D is capable of identifying objects like a chair. We derive a practically useful and asymptotically optimal strategy that guarantees a competitive ratio of 2, which differs remarkably from the well-studied scenario without the need of stopping for surveying the environment. Our strategy is used by Kurt3D, documented in a separate video.

47ERIC ED411817: Distance Teaching In Online Searching.

By

Distance teaching of online searching poses a number of problems especially with regard to its practical aspects. The principles of sound instructional design and technological developments can, however, be used to develop a multimedia study package that can solve these problems and be used to teach end-users, information specialists as well as Information Science students. At the University of South Africa (Unisa), the Department of Information Science uses a multimedia study package to teach online searching and to make students aware of teaching principles. The Library Service offers online training courses for their end-users. Combining the experience and expertise of the Department and of the Library, the objective is to develop a multimedia study package that allows for independent study where the student need attend only the practical sessions. The application of instructional design to the study package is explained and examples are given of the content, objectives, learning events, teaching methods and media combinations. The study package is suitable for different levels of online searching and for people from both developed and under-developed environments. It also caters to adult learners' interests. The proposed package includes the use of printed media, videos, practical exercises, workshops, e-mail and use of the Internet. The package is based on the characteristics of distance teaching and multimedia study packages. (Contains 14 references.) (Author)
