2Strong-field Spatial Intensity-intensity Correlations Of Light Scattered From Regular Structures Of Atoms

Photon correlations and cross-correlations of light scattered by a regular structure of strongly driven atoms are investigated. At strong driving, the scattered light separates into distinct spectral bands, such that each band can be treated as independent, thus extending the set of observables. We focus on second-order intensity-intensity correlation functions in two- and multi-atom systems. We demonstrate that for a single two-photon detector as, e.g., in lithography, increasing the driving field intensity leads to an increased spatial resolution of the second-order two-atom interference pattern. We show that the cross-correlations between photons emitted in the spectral sidebands violate Cauchy-Schwartz inequalities, and that their emission ordering cannot be predicted. Finally, the results are generalized for multi-particle structures, where we find results different from those in a Dicke-type sample.

7Quantitative Assessment Of Birefringent Skin Structures In Scattered Light Confocal Imaging Using Radially Polarized Light.

Abstract The polarization characteristics of birefringent tissues could be only partially obtained using linearly polarized light in polarization sensitive optical imaging. Here we analyze the change in polarization of backscattered light from birefringent structures versus the orientations of the incident polarizations using linearly, circularly and radially polarized light in a cross-polarized confocal microscope. A spatially variable retardation plate composed of eight sectors of λ/2 wave plates was used to transform linearly polarized light into a radially polarized light. Based on the experimental data obtained from ex-vivo measurements on human scalp hairs and in-vivo measurements on hair and skin, we exemplify that the underestimation of the birefringence content resulting from the orientation related effects associated with the use of linearly polarized light for imaging tissues containing wavy birefringent structures could be minimized by using radially polarized light.

9Two-photon Scattering Of A Tightly Focused Weak Light Beam From A Small Atomic Ensemble : An Optical Probe To Detect Atomic Level Structures

We study two-photon scattering of a tightly focused weak light beam from a small atomic ensemble of two-level atoms (2LAs). This is similar to the scattering of photons from an atomic ensemble in a one-dimensional waveguide. The scaling of two-photon nonlinearity at single-photon resonance shows a non-monotonic behaviour with an increasing number of few identical 2LAs. The two-photon nonlinearity decays monotonically with an increasing number of atoms for incident photons detuned from single-photon resonance. Single-photon transport in two 2LAs is similar to that in a single V-type three-level atom (3LA). However two-photon transport in these two systems shows very different line-shapes. When single-photon transmission is zero in these systems, two transmitted photons are bunched together in a V-type 3LA, while their correlation is zero in two 2LAs. The difference in the two-photon line-shape persists for few 2LAs and 3LAs. Therefore, the two-photon scattering of a tightly focused weak light beam can be used as a probe to detect atomic level structures of different atoms with similar transition energies.

Light beams can be symmetric under different transformations: translations, rotations, mirror symmetries, duality transformations, etc. In this thesis, a systematic way of characterizing these symmetries is presented. Then, it is shown that light beams symmetric under different transformations can be used to control light-matter interactions at the nano-scale. Particular applications are developed, both theoretically and experimentally. Inducing a dual behaviour on a non-dual sample, the excitation of high multipolar order resonances and the measurement of circular dichroism using vortex beams are among them.

Despite the widespread use of translucent facades of large areas in the architecture of civil buildings, a large number of technical issues related to improving the strength and heat-shielding characteristics of the main materials for the manufacture of facade structures remain unresolved. This article discusses the main options for technical measures to ensure the required heat-shielding characteristics of translucent building envelopes, which directly affect the climate comfort in the premises of civil buildings with large glazing areas. The results of this study make it possible to streamline theoretical and technical information on ways to passively compensate for the influence of large glazing areas on the climatic characteristics of the air environment in civil buildings.

This article is from Nucleic Acids Research , volume 40 . Abstract The G-quadruplex architecture is a peculiar structure adopted by guanine-rich oligonucleotidic sequences, and, in particular, by several aptamers, including the thrombin-binding aptamer (TBA) that has the highest inhibitory activity against human α-thrombin. A crucial role in determining structure, stability and biological properties of G-quadruplexes is played by ions. In the case of TBA, K+ ions cause an enhancement of the aptamer clotting inhibitory activity. A detailed picture of the interactions of TBA with the protein and with the ions is still lacking, despite the importance of this aptamer in biomedical field for detection and inhibition of α-thrombin. Here, we fill this gap by presenting a high-resolution crystallographic structural characterization of the thrombin–TBA complex formed in the presence of Na+ or K+ and a circular dichroism study of the structural stability of the aptamer both free and complexed with α-thrombin, in the presence of the two ionic species. The results indicate that the different effects exerted by Na+ and K+ on the inhibitory activity of TBA are related to a subtle perturbation of a few key interactions at the protein–aptamer interface. The present data, in combination with those previously obtained on the complex between α-thrombin and a modified aptamer, may allow the design of new TBA variants with a pharmacological performance enhancement.

It is theoretically shown that storage and time-reversal of light pulses can be achieved in a coupled-resonator optical waveguide by dynamic tuning of the cavity resonances without maintaining the translational invariance of the system. The control exploits the Bloch oscillation motion of a light pulse in presence of a refractive index ramp, and it is therefore rather different from the mechanism of adiabatic band compression and reversal proposed by Yanik and Fan in recent works [M.F. Yanik and S. Fan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 083901 (2004); Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 173903 (2004)].

15The Effect Of Different Magnetospheric Structures On Predictions Of Gamma-ray Pulsar Light Curves

The second pulsar catalogue of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) will contain in excess of 100 gamma-ray pulsars. The light curves (LCs) of these pulsars exhibit a variety of shapes, and also different relative phase lags with respect to their radio pulses, hinting at distinct underlying emission properties (e.g., inclination and observer angles) for the individual pulsars. Detailed geometric modelling of the radio and gamma-ray LCs may provide constraints on the B-field structure and emission geometry. We used different B-field solutions, including the static vacuum dipole and the retarded vacuum dipole, in conjunction with an existing geometric modelling code, and constructed radiation sky maps and LCs for several different pulsar parameters. Standard emission geometries were assumed, namely the two-pole caustic (TPC) and outer gap (OG) models. The sky maps and LCs of the various B-field and radiation model combinations were compared to study their effect on the resulting LCs. As an application, we compared our model LCs with Fermi LAT data for the Vela pulsar, and inferred the most probable configuration in this case, thereby constraining Vela's high-altitude magnetic structure and system geometry.

This paper challenges the conventional interpretation of gravitational lensing as exclusive evidence of general relativity. While arcs and Einstein rings have been celebrated for their smooth uniformity, we argue that such uniformity is paradoxical, given that light is a wave traveling through turbulent three-dimensional galactic density fields. We propose an alternative density-based cumulative refraction model, in which light is refracted, not attracted, by successive high-density regions such as nebulae and star-forming complexes. We show that using mean galactic density is misleading, since it cannot even explain the formation of small satellites or moons, and only serves as a post hoc adjustment. Instead, localized high-density structures must be considered as the effective refractive agents. This interpretation explains why calculated deflection angles may differ from observed ones: the density values outside our solar system are essentially arbitrary assumptions. Thus, smooth arcs are not unique proof of spacetime curvature, but a result of three-dimensional irregularities being averaged into two-dimensional projections.

Intensive light pulse interaction with a dense resonant medium is considered. The possibilities of optical switching and pulse compression at realistic parameters of the medium are analyzed. Pulse shape transformation in different photonic band gap structures containing a dense resonant medium is studied. In particular the effect of dispersion compensation due to nonlinear interaction with a medium is reported. The possibility of pulse control with another pulse is considered in the schemes of co- and counter-propagating pulses. It is shown that a photonic crystal makes controlling more effective, at least in the case of co-propagating pulses.

At the request of MoD/DGW&T (Infrastructural Department) a literature research has been carried out on light construction materials, which might be suitable for application in protective structures. Because of the out-of-area operations with which the armed force is occupied these days, there is interest in light materials because of transport. The characteristics of light metal, ceramics, plastics en composites are given. It is not possible to specify one material as the most suitable. Each material has its positive and negative characteristics. The appropriateness of a material depends on the specific demands, which are not specified. It is advised to keep following the developments in the field of light weight materials and to fill up gaps in the knowledge of the dynamic behaviour of promising materials by testing them under blast and impact. Furthermore it is advised not to focus only on the choice of a good material, but to pay also attention to the construction aspects, such as the connections.

Light propagation in two Swiss cheese models based on anisotropic Szekeres structures is studied and compared with light propagation in Swiss cheese models based on the Szekeres models' underlying LTB models. The study shows that the anisotropy of the Szekeres models has only a small effect on quantities such as redshift-distance relations, projected shear and expansion rate along individual light rays. \newline\indent The average angular diameter distance to the last scattering surface is computed for each model. Contrary to earlier studies, the results obtained here are (mostly) in agreement with perturbative results. In particular, a small negative shift, $\delta D_A:=\frac{D_A-D_{A,bg}}{D_{A,bg}}$, in the angular diameter distance is obtained upon line-of-sight averaging in three of the four models. The results are, however, not statistically significant. In the fourth model, there is a small positive shift which has an especially small statistical significance. The line-of-sight averaged inverse magnification at $z = 1100$ is consistent with $1$ to a high level of confidence for all models, indicating that the area of the surface corresponding to $z = 1100$ is close to that of the background.

Spatio-temporal imaging of light propagation is very important in photonics because it provides the most direct tool available to study the interaction between light and its host environment. Sub-ps time resolution is needed to investigate the fine and complex structural features that characterize disordered and heterogeneous structures, which are responsible for a rich array of transport physics that have not yet been fully explored. A newly developed wide-field imaging system enables us to present a spatio-temporal study on light transport in various disordered media, revealing properties that could not be properly assessed using standard techniques. By extending our investigation to an almost transparent membrane, a configuration that has been difficult to characterize until now, we unveil the peculiar physics exhibited by such thin scattering systems with transport features that go beyond mainstream diffusion modeling, despite the occurrence of multiple scattering.

24Diffusive Transport Of Light In Three-dimensional Disordered Voronoi Structures

The origin of diffusive transport of light in dry foams is still under debate. In this paper, we consider the random walks of photons as they are reflected or transmitted by liquid films according to the rules of ray optics. The foams are approximately modeled by three-dimensional Voronoi tessellations with varying degree of disorder. We study two cases: a constant intensity reflectance and the reflectance of thin films. Especially in the second case, we find that in the experimentally important regime for the film thicknesses, the transport-mean-free path does not significantly depend on the topological and geometrical disorder of the Voronoi foams including the periodic Kelvin foam. This may indicate that the detailed structure of foams is not crucial for understanding the diffusive transport of light. Furthermore, our theoretical values for transport-mean-free path fall in the same range as the experimental values observed in dry foams. One can therefore argue that liquid films contribute substantially to the diffusive transport of light in {dry} foams.

The transport properties of channel delta-doped quantum well structures were characterized by conventional Hall effect and light-modulated Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect measurements. The large number of carriers that become available due to the delta-doping of the channel, leads to an apparent degeneracy in the well. As a result of this degeneracy, the carrier mobility remains constant as a function of temperature from 300 K down to 1.4 K. The large amount of impurity scattering, associated with the overlap of the charge carriers and the dopants, resulted in low carrier mobilities and restricted the observation of the oscillatory magneto-resistance used to characterize the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by conventional SdH measurements. By light-modulating the carriers, we were able to observe the SdH oscillation at low magnetic fields, below 1.4 tesla, and derive a value for the quantum scattering time. Our results for the ratio of the transport and quantum scattering times are lower than those previously measured for similar structures using much higher magnetic fields.

Abstract Light extraction efficiency (LEE) of AlGaN-based nanorod deep ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is numerically investigated using three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations. LEE of deep UV LEDs is limited by strong light absorption in the p-GaN contact layer and total internal reflection. The nanorod structure is found to be quite effective in increasing LEE of deep UV LEDs especially for the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. In the nanorod LED, strong dependence of LEE on structural parameters such as the diameter of a nanorod and the p-GaN thickness is observed, which can be attributed to the formation of resonant modes inside the nanorod structure. Simulation results show that, when the structural parameters of the nanorod LED are optimized, LEE can be higher than 50% and 60% for the transverse electric (TE) and TM modes, respectively. The nanorod structure is expected to be a good candidate for the application to future high-efficiency deep UV LEDs.PACS: 41.20.Jb; 42.72.Bj; 85.60.Jb

30Spin Orbit Interaction Of Light Mediated By Scattering From Plasmonic Nano-structures

The spin orbit interactions (SOI) of light mediated by single scattering from plasmon resonant metal nanoparticles (nanorods and nanospheres) are investigated using explicit theory based on Jones and Stokes-Mueller polarimetry formalism. The individual SOI effects are analyzed and interpreted via the Mueller matrix-derived, polarimetry characteristics, namely, diattenuation d and retardance {\delta}. The results demonstrate that each of the contributing SOI effects can be controllably enhanced by exploiting the interference of two neighboring modes in plasmonic nanostructures (orthogonal electric dipolar modes in rods or electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes in spheres).

As learning is a product of the interaction between certain concepts which are already present within an individual's mind, it is becoming increasingly important to determine the cognitive structures in relation to these concepts which are present within the minds of students. It has been said that the word association test, which is a technique that discloses the cognitive structure, provides an opportunity to evaluate the structure of connections between the creations of knowledge within the minds of individuals. This also includes the question as to whether these connections are considered logical or not. The goal of this study is to examine the cognitive structures of primary school Turkish pre-service teachers in regards to the concept of light. This also happens to be one of the basic concepts of science, by means of the word association test. The sample group within this qualitative research study was comprised of 35 pre-service teachers, who were all in the process of studying at the 3rd grade in the Department of Primary Education. The sentences formed by each of the pre-service teachers in regards to the concept of light were evaluated in terms of the categories developed by Ozata-Yucel & Ozkan (2015). Whilst the pre-service teachers generally associated the concept of light to the concepts of the sun, stars, light bulb, illumination, energy, light refraction, velocity of light, artificial light source, linear road, electricity, lamp and the moon, it was determined that the concept of light was to be related to the individual source and nature of light.

This study analyzed the textbooks titled "Arabic for Non-native Speaking Children", Level I by Zakirov, Mingazova, and Mukhametzyanov (2011), and "Arabic for Non-Native Speaking Children", Level II by Mingazova, Zakirov, and Mukhametzyanov (2013) which are used to teach Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) to elementary school children in Tatarstan. The textbooks were then evaluated in the light of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) criteria. Results showed that the textbooks do not meet the CEFR language teaching and learning criteria, as they focus on the reading and writing skills, not oral skills and communication. They focus on the Arabic alphabet letters and basic Arabic grammatical structures and categories. The words taught are selected based on whether they contain the alphabet letter under study, not on the basis of belonging to a certain semantic category. In addition, the textbooks have adopted a grammar-translation approach, not a communicative, functional approach. The study recommends restructuring the textbook aims, skills and subskills taught, language elements selected, syllabus design adopted, and language teaching approach followed so that focus is on learning Arabic for communication. The whole Arabic lesson should be conducted in Arabic (L2). The students should practice oral skills before they move on to reading and writing sentences and paragraphs. Published results on rotor burst containment with single materials, and on body armor using composite materials were used to establish a set of hypotheses about what variables might control the design of a weight-efficient protective device. Based on modern concepts for the design and analysis of small optimum seeking experiments, a particular experiment for evaluating the hypotheses and materials was designed. The design and methods for the analysis of results are described. The consequence of such hypotheses is that the device should consist of as many as four concentric rings, each to consist of a material uniquely chosen for its position in the penetration sequence.

Light scattering and transmission by rough surfaces are of considerable interest in a variety of applications including remote sensing and characterization of surfaces. In this work, the finite-difference time domain technique is applied to calculate the scattered and transmitted electromagnetic fields of an infinite periodic rough surface. The elements of Mueller matrix for scattered light are calculated by an integral of the near fields over a significant number of periods of the surface. The normalized Mueller matrix elements of the scattered light and the spatial distribution of the transmitted flux for a monolayer of micron-sized dielectric spheres on a silicon substrate are presented. The numerical results show that the nonzero Mueller matrix elements of the system of the monolayer of dielectric spheres on a silicon substrate have specific maxima at some scattering angles. These maxima may be used in characterization of the feature of the system. For light transmitted through the monolayer of spheres, our results show that the transmitted energy focuses around the ray passing through centers of the spheres. At other locations, the transmitted flux is very small. The technique also may be used to calculate the perturbance of the electromagnetic field due to the presence of an isolated structure on the substrate.

In this article, with the assumption of explicit isospin violation arising from the $f_0(980)-a_0(980)$ mixing, we take the point of view that the scalar mesons $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ have both strange and non-strange quark-antiquark components and evaluate the strong coupling constants $g_{f_0 K^+ K^-}$ and $g_{a_0 K^+ K^-}$ within the framework of the light-cone QCD sum rules approach. The large strong scalar-$KK$ couplings through both the $n\bar{n}$ and $s\bar{s}$ components $g^{\bar{n}n}_{f_0 K^+ K^-}$, $g^{\bar{s}s}_{f_0 K^+ K^-}$, $g^{\bar{n}n}_{a_0 K^+ K^-}$ and $g^{\bar{s}s}_{a_0 K^+ K^-}$will support the hadronic dressing mechanism, furthermore, in spite of the constituent structure differences between the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ mesons, the strange components have larger strong coupling constants with the $K^+K^-$ state than the corresponding non-strange ones, $g_{f_0 K^+ K^-}^{\bar{s}s}\approx \sqrt{2}g_{f_0 K^+ K^-}^{\bar{n}n}$ and $g_{a_0 K^+ K^-}^{\bar{s}s}\approx \sqrt{2} g_{a_0 K^+ K^-}^{\bar{n}n}$. From the existing controversial values, we can not reach a general consensus on the strong coupling constants $g_{f_0 K^+ K^-}$, $g_{a_0 K^+ K^-}$ and the mixing angles.

Physical principle of population inversion of electrons between subbands under the electron hole pair injection into the i-region of p-i-n heterostructure with quantum wells is proposed. The important features of this principle are the simultaneous generation of intraband (h nu somewhat > E(g)) radiation of near-infrared range and presence of metastable level. Spontaneous mid-infrared radiation (Lambda + approx 10 ... 20 micrometers) is observed from laser structures with InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The near-infrared laser diode structures with composite waveguide confining both near-infrared and mid-infrared radiation is designed and grown.

The nature of light-induced structures in attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of molecular systems is investigated theoretically. It is shown how nuclear dynamics affect these structures. We find that a theoretical three-surface model captures the main characteristics in the calculated spectra. Based on this model, nuclear dynamics is divided into different categories, each category having unique signatures in the absorption spectra. Finally, we discuss the possibility for experimental observation of light-induced structures in molecules.

A strong influence of illumination and electric bias on the Curie temperature and saturation value of the magnetization is demonstrated for semiconductor structures containing a modulation-doped p-type Cd0.96Mn0.04Te quantum well placed in various built-in electric fields. It is shown that both light beam and bias voltage generate an isothermal and reversible cross-over between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, in the way that is predetermined by the structure design. The observed behavior is in quantitative agreement with the expectations for systems, in which ferromagnetic interactions are mediated by the weakly disordered two-dimensional hole liquid.

The purpose of this paper is to serve as an introduction, for non-physicists, to the subject of light distribution in hollow structures. The motivation for light distribution is the importance of getting the maximum value from available light. We all recognize that photons cost money (one photon costs about $10(exp -25) to make) so we obviously want to try to make the maximum number of photons for a given cost. What is often overlooked, however, is that these photons have the highest value only if they are delivered to the right place in the correct quantity. This means that there is often substantial economic value in the high quality distribution of light. This problem is discussed from a very general perspective, in order to show the role of general optical films for manipulating light. The underlying physics at work in such films is described, and examples of common optical light distribution films are provided.

46Nonlinear Propagation Of Light In One Dimensional Periodic Structures

We consider the nonlinear propagation of light in an optical fiber waveguide as modeled by the anharmonic Maxwell-Lorentz equations (AMLE). The waveguide is assumed to have an index of refraction which varies periodically along its length. The wavelength of light is selected to be in resonance with the periodic structure (Bragg resonance). The AMLE system considered incorporates the effects non-instantaneous response of the medium to the electromagnetic field (chromatic or material dispersion), the periodic structure (photonic band dispersion) and nonlinearity. We present a detailed discussion of the role of these effects individually and in concert. We derive the nonlinear coupled mode equations (NLCME) which govern the envelope of the coupled backward and forward components of the electromagnetic field. We prove the validity of the NLCME description and give explicit estimates for the deviation of the approximation given by NLCME from the {\it exact} dynamics, governed by AMLE. NLCME is known to have gap soliton states. A consequence of our results is the existence of very long-lived {\it gap soliton} states of AMLE. We present numerical simulations which validate as well as illustrate the limits of the theory. Finally, we verify that the assumptions of our model apply to the parameter regimes explored in recent physical experiments in which gap solitons were observed.

49Dynamics Of Light Propagation In Spatiotemporal Dielectric Structures

Propagation, transmission and reflection properties of linearly polarized plane waves and arbitrarily short electromagnetic pulses in one-dimensional dispersionless dielectric media possessing an arbitrary space-time dependence of the refractive index are studied by using a two-component, highly symmetric version of Maxwell's equations. The use of any slow varying amplitude approximation is avoided. Transfer matrices of sharp nonstationary interfaces are calculated explicitly, together with the amplitudes of all secondary waves produced in the scattering. Time-varying multilayer structures and spatiotemporal lenses in various configurations are investigated analytically and numerically in a unified approach. Several new effects are reported, such as pulse compression, broadening and spectral manipulation of pulses by a spatiotemporal lens, and the closure of the forbidden frequency gaps with the subsequent opening of wavenumber bandgaps in a generalized Bragg reflector.

We demonstrate that structures made of light can be used to coherently control the motion of complex molecules. In particular, we show diffraction of the fullerenes C60 and C70 at a thin grating based on a standing light wave. We prove experimentally that the principles of this effect, well known from atom optics, can be successfully extended to massive and large molecules which are internally in a thermodynamic mixed state and which do not exhibit narrow optical resonances. Our results will be important for the observation of quantum interference with even larger and more complex objects.
