6DTIC ADA060493: Human Performance In Concurrent Verbal And Tracking Tasks: A Review Of The Literature.

By

The development of voice interactive computer systems (VIS) for the control of on-board aircraft systems is expected to result in reduced operator work-load and increased effectiveness of naval aviation crews. A data base is needed to provide answers to human factors engineering questions arising from this development. The research reported in sixteen major scientific journals, as well as in Psychological Abstracts, for the interval 1967-1977 inclusive, was examined for reports of investigations of human performance in concurrent verbal and continuous manual control tasks. A few readily available technical reports were also examined. Adequate experimental data are not available to form a data base to support human factors requirements of the VIS development. A comprehensive research program is needed to determine the extent of human operator performance capabilities in timeshared verbal and manual control tasks. (Author)

7DTIC ADA420625: Aircrew Performance Cutting-Edge Tech: Emerging Human Performance Enhancement Technology Vision In Support Of Operational Military Aviation Strategy

By

Using cutting-edge technology to create a human factors advantage in military operations will contribute to success on the battlefield of the future whether below the surface, on the surface, in the air, or in space. Human factors system selection in the past has appeared to be arbitrary and intermittent, with no unifying vision and apparently little or no coordination between the military services. Mature, timely applied technology will reduce risk and enhance combat capability. By decreasing mishaps during training and combat, there will be a reduced number of lost lives of highly trained and costly aircrew, while preserving training and combat assets (aircraft/unmanned vehicles). A concomitant increase in survivability through better understanding of human factors technology will ultimately give the modern aviation warrior a tactical edge throughout the full spectrum of combat and provide secondary benefits to the civilian aviation sector. This paper will explain currently available and emerging aviation human factors technological advances in today's military aviation weapons systems and recommend a vision (and direction) for the most promising, emerging aviation human factors-related technological advances. Emerging human factors areas addressed in this paper include fatigue; vision enhancement/refractive eye surgery; nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons; directed energy weapons; mishap reduction; service culture; situational awareness; spatial disorientation; simulation; and training. It is hoped that this vision will focus technological direction so that the advances may be incorporated more rapidly into operational aviation combat systems.

8DTIC ADA433110: Measurement Of Human Performance For Future Combat Systems Command And Control

By

Historically, Army acquisition has had difficulty conducting an adequate early assessment of the human dimension in system performance. Proactive research on human performance, however, is vital to achieving the unprecedented alliance of humans and machines anticipated with Future Combat Systems (FCS). This paper summarizes research methods and findings across four exploratory experiments focused on the command group of a small combined arms unit composed primarily of unmanned air and ground vehicles. Results are based on highly detailed objective measures of verbal and human-computer interaction and an array of subjective measures from expert and novice participants. Findings underscore potential problems in training and workload with FCS, and potential solutions through user-based involvement and proactive research to ensure technology complements human performance.

9DTIC ADA600954: Evaluation Of The Human/Extreme Environment Interaction: Implications For Enhancing Operational Performance And Recovery

By

The purpose of this research determines how hypoxia interacts with exercise and recovery to yield various metabolic responses that may affect performance and performance at high-altitude critical to mission success. Participants completed a maximal exercise test under normoxic conditions (975 m). Four experimental trials were completed including 60 minutes of cycling (70% of Wmax) followed by 6 h of recovery at four different simulated altitudes (0 m, 1667 m, 3333 m, or 5000 m) using a randomized, counterbalanced, cross-over design over the span of 4 weeks, with a minimum of 7 days between trials. Blood O2 saturation was measured via pulse oximetry every hour during the 6 h recovery period. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis pre- and 6 h post-exercise for analysis of mitochondrial related gene expression. Blood O2 saturation decreased with each increase in simulated altitude during recovery (0 m: 98 1%; 1667 m: 94 1%; 3333 m: 90 1%; 5000 m: 79 2%; p 0.05). Expression of PGC-1 , HK, and SOD increased significantly with exercise (p 0.05), but were not different between trials. Similarly, markers of oxidative stress indicated a time-dependent response following exercise for all variables (p0.05), but the two highest recovery altitudes (3333m and 5000m) demonstrated a partially attenuated this response for LOOH (p0.001). These data demonstrate no dose-response relationship between magnitude of hypoxic exposure and mitochondrial gene expression yet minor alterations in oxidative stress. Therefore, the paradox of mitochondrial function in response to acute and chronic exposure to hypoxia cannot be explained by the magnitude of hypoxia. Of additional interest in year three of this project series related to the evaluation of advanced instrumentation to determine changes in hydration status in parallel to established markers from urine and isotopic enrichment methodologies.

10DTIC ADA376631: Human Capital: Using Incentives To Motivate And Reward High Performance

By

This report discusses the role of incentive programs in motivating and rewarding federal employees to achieve high performance that Supports agency missions and goals. An agency's workforce defines its character and its capacity for performance. Thus, if federal agencies are to make major improvements in performance-based management as envisioned by the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA), they must strategically manage their most important asset-their human capital-to achieve results. Incentive programs can be an important part of performance management systems because they can serve to align employee performance expectations with agency missions and goals as well as reinforce personal accountability for high performance. Effective incentive programs that motivate all employees, and reward those employees, teams, and organizational units whose performance exceeds expectations, can help federal agencies maximize the results they achieve.

11DTIC ADA422127: The Application Of A Qualitative Model Of Human-Interaction With Automation: Effects Of Unreliable Automation On Performance

By

A visual search paradigm was used to examine the effects of information automation and decision-aiding automation in a target detection and processing task. Manual, information automation, and decision-aiding automation conditions were manipulated with the size of the distractor set. Participants were required to respond to the presence or absence of a target in a time-limited trial. Reliability level (90%, 70%, 50%) of the automation was manipulated as a between subjects variable. Each reliability level group was comprised of eight volunteers for a total of 24 participants. Results indicated that the information automation cue condition engendered an increase in correct responses and a reduction in search times, regardless of set size or automation reliability. On the other hand, the presence of a decision-aiding cue differentially affected performance on all dependent measures as a function of both set size and automation reliability, alone or in concert with an information automation cue.

12DTIC ADA258553: Modeling The Dynamics Of Mental Workload And Human Performance In Complex Systems

By

This program studied the relationship between subjective workload and human behavior and proposed a model of the dynamics of this relationship. Results of three simulation experiments are detailed in this report and show that simple linear identification algorithms are robust in online identification of noisy, nonlinear versions of the model. This model and the associated algorithms have the potential to enable online inferences of workload and could be used to prompt/invoke human aiding or automated systems to help reduce workload. Applications for such systems exist in aiding aircraft pilots; command, control, communication decision makers; and other personnel in dynamic, time constrained environments.

13DTIC ADA130443: Chronopsychological Approach For Optimizing Human Performance.

By

A new interdisciplinary science of chronopsychology is discussed with respect to its methods, concepts, theories, and applications, especially to shiftwork and transmeridian dyschronism ('jet lag'). Chronopshychology is introduced to show the impact of circadian rhythmic components, as seen in shiftwork and transmeridian flight environements, on human performance efficiency, feeling tones, fatigue, and sleepiness. The source materials on circadian components of human effectiveness in shiftwork and in a rapid deployment across many time zones suggest that the timing of the work period should be optimized on the basis of the fundamental circadian rhythms to assure the best time for work and rest. Differences between the adjustment of shiftworkers and jet travelers to new work environments are discussed, with suggestions on how to accelerate this process.

26ERIC ED504348: A Study On Value-Perception Priority Of Human Resource Development (HRD) Practitioners For Workplace Learning And Performance (WLP) In The Korean Context

By

The current research sought to measure the value-perception priorities of Korean HRD professionals based on a modified previously developed HRD value matrix. Findings show that Korean HRD practitioners perceived the learning process and performance-related values as more important than environmental factor-related values on both individual and organizational levels. Finally, significant differences were not found for the value-priority based on gender, year of experience, and occupations. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)

35NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20090014914: Human Factors Assessment Of Vibration Effects On Visual Performance During Launch

By

The Human Factors Assessment of Vibration Effects on Visual Performance During Launch (Visual Performance) investigation will determine visual performance limits during operational vibration and g-loads on the Space Shuttle, specifically through the determination of minimum readable font size during ascent using planned Orion display formats. Research Summary: The aim of the Human Factors Assessment of Vibration Effects on Visual Performance during Launch (Visual Performance) investigation is to provide supplementary data to that collected by the Thrust Oscillation Seat Detailed Technical Objective (DTO) 695 (Crew Seat DTO) which will measure seat acceleration and vibration from one flight deck and two middeck seats during ascent. While the Crew Seat DTO data alone are important in terms of providing a measure of vibration and g-loading, human performance data are required to fully interpret the operational consequences of the vibration values collected during Space Shuttle ascent. During launch, crewmembers will be requested to view placards with varying font sizes and indicate the minimum readable size. In combination with the Crew Seat DTO, the Visual Performance investigation will: Provide flight-validated evidence that will be used to establish vibration limits for visual performance during combined vibration and linear g-loading. o Provide flight data as inputs to ongoing ground-based simulations, which will further validate crew visual performance under vibration loading in a controlled environment. o Provide vibration and performance metrics to help validate procedures for ground tests and analyses of seats, suits, displays and controls, and human-in-the-loop performance.

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940007065: Measuring Human Performance On NASA's Microgravity Aircraft

By

Measuring human performance in a microgravity environment will aid in identifying the design requirements, human capabilities, safety, and productivity of future astronauts. The preliminary understanding of the microgravity effects on human performance can be achieved through evaluations conducted onboard NASA's KC-135 aircraft. These evaluations can be performed in relation to hardware performance, human-hardware interface, and hardware integration. Measuring human performance in the KC-135 simulated environment will contribute to the efforts of optimizing the human-machine interfaces for future and existing space vehicles. However, there are limitations, such as limited number of qualified subjects, unexpected hardware problems, and miscellaneous plane movements which must be taken into consideration. Examples for these evaluations, the results, and their implications are discussed in the paper.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20060017835: Stress, Cognition, And Human Performance: A Literature Review And Conceptual Framework

By

The following literature review addresses the effects of various stressors on cognition. While attempting to be as inclusive as possible, the review focuses its examination on the relationships between cognitive appraisal, attention, memory, and stress as they relate to information processing and human performance. The review begins with an overview of constructs and theoretical perspectives followed by an examination of effects across attention, memory, perceptual-motor functions, judgment and decision making, putative stressors such as workload, thermals, noise, and fatigue and closes with a discussion of moderating variables and related topics. In summation of the review, a conceptual framework for cognitive process under stress has been assembled. As one might imagine, the research literature that addresses stress, theories governing its effects on human performance, and experimental evidence that supports these notions is large and diverse. In attempting to organize and synthesize this body of work, I was guided by several earlier efforts (Bourne & Yaroush, 2003; Driskell, Mullen, Johnson, Hughes, & Batchelor, 1992; Driskell & Salas, 1996; Haridcock & Desmond, 2001; Stokes & Kite, 1994). These authors should be credited with accomplishing the monumental task of providing focused reviews in this area and their collective efforts laid the foundation for this present review. Similarly, the format of this review has been designed in accordance with these previous exemplars. However, each of these previous efforts either simply reported general findings, without sufficient experimental illustration, or narrowed their scope of investigation to the extent that the breadth of such findings remained hidden from the reader. Moreover, none of these examinations yielded an architecture that adequately describes or explains the inter-relations between information processing elements under stress conditions.

39ERIC ED298180: Directly Comparing Computer And Human Performance In Language Understanding And Visual Reasoning.

By

Evaluation models are being developed for assessing artificial intelligence (AI) systems in terms of similar performance by groups of people. Natural language understanding and vision systems are the areas of concentration. In simplest terms, the goal is to norm a given natural language system's performance on a sample of people. The specific program under study is a natural language query system, IRUS--an interface between the user and the information desired. IRUS is designed to serve as a general purpose interface to a broad range of databases and expert systems. A pilot study is discussed, which was conducted with early elementary school and preschool students to determine the appropriate language understanding level at which to administer the IRUS test. In the vision area, common measures of visual tasks are being analyzed in terms of their appropriateness to the vision system. This is the inverse of the language exploration that began with the tasks and created the measures. A review by the vision community of approaches they would use to compare human and machine vision will determine if looking for consistent benchmarks is a feasible approach. (SLD)

40ERIC ED373103: The EPIC Architecture For Modeling Human Information-Processing And Performance: A Brief Introduction.

By

EPIC (Executive Process-Interactive Control) is a human information-processing architecture that is especially suited for modeling multiple-task performance. The EPIC architecture includes peripheral sensory-motor processors surrounding a production-rule cognitive processor, and is being used to construct precise computational models for basic multiple-task situations. Some of these models are briefly illustrated here to demonstrate how EPIC applies to multiple-task performance, and helps to clarify some basic properties of human performance. Additional applications of EPIC to modeling human-computer interaction are briefly summarized. (Author)

41DTIC ADA495197: Validating Human Behavioral Models For Combat Simulations Using Techniques For The Evaluation Of Human Performance

By

As Department of Defense (DoD) leaders rely more on modeling and simulation to provide information on which to base strategic and tactical decisions, simulation credibility becomes more important. Prior to their use in simulations and analytical studies, DoD models are required to undergo the verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A) process in an attempt to establish an acceptable level of credibility. In general, the human behavioral model validation process, as outlined by the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO), is not extendable to meet requirements for validating the varied and complex behavioral models in use or under development for DoD simulations. This paper reviews several issues with validating human behavior representation (HBR) and identifies potential practices for enhancing the validation process for current and future human behavioral models for use in or application to combat simulations.
