The problem under investigation in this report was the low achievement level of some students in the ESEA Title I Schools in Kansas City, Missouri. It was felt that part of this low achievement was due to a negative feeling among some teachers regarding the ability of the children to achieve. Kansas City mental health professionals and educators sought to prove the hypothesis that negativism might be reduced if the teachers had an improved awareness of themselves and the inner city community and children. The research design included participating and non-participating teacher groups, a principal's group, and a supervisory personnel group. A semantic differential type of instrument was used for pre- and post-testing. Participants tended to be more positive toward concepts tested than did nonparticipants; and post-test scores tended to be more positive than did pre-test scores. Limitations, and recommendations for future research of this nature are included. (Author/DM)

We investigated the network structures of the Japanese stock market through the minimum spanning tree. We defined grouping coefficient to test the validity of conventional grouping by industrial categories, and found a decreasing in trend for the coefficient. This phenomenon supports the increasing external influences on the market due to the globalization. To reduce this influence, we used S&P500 index as the international market and removed its correlation with every stock. We found stronger grouping in this measurement, compared to the original analysis, which agrees with our assumption that the international market influences to the Japanese market.

We obtain restrictions on the universal baryon fraction, f_B = Omega_B/Omega_0, by assuming that the observed microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud are due to baryonic MACHOs in the halo of the Galaxy and by extracting a bound to the total mass of the Milky Way from the motion of tracer galaxies in the Local Group. We find a lower bound f_B > 0.29^{+0.18}_{-0.15}. Consistency with the predictions of primordial nucleosynthesis leads to the further constraint on the total mass density, Omega_0 < 0.2.

We consider automorphism groups of some countably categorical structures and their precompact expansions. We prove that automorphism groups of omega-stable omega-categorical structures have metrizable universal minimal flows. We also study amenability of these groups. This is a draft of a paper which will be extended by some other results.

We investigate the effect of static electron-phonon coupling, on real-time dynamics of spin and charge transport in $\pi$-conjugated polyene chains. The polyene chain is modeled by the Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian with dimerized nearest-neighbor parameter $t_{0}(1+\delta)$ for short bonds and $t_{0}(1-\delta)$ for long bonds, and long-range electron-electron interactions. We follow the time evolution of the spin and charge using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group technique, when a hole is injected at one end of the chain in its ground state. We find that spin and charge dynamics followed through spin and charge velocities, depend both on chain length and extent of dimerization, $\delta$. Analysis of the results requires focusing on physical quantities such as average spin and charge polarizations, particularly in the large dimerization limit. In the dimerization range 0.0 $\le$ $\delta$ $\le$ 0.15, spin-charge dynamics is found to have a well defined behavior, with spin-charge separation (measured as the ratio of charge velocity to spin velocity) as well as, the total amount of charge and spin transported in a given time, along the chain, decreasing as dimerization increases. However, in the range 0.3 $\le$ $\delta$ $\le$ 0.5, it is observed that the dynamics of spin and charge transport becomes complicated. It is observed that for large $\delta$ values, spin-charge separation is suppressed and the injected hole fails to travel the entire length of the chain.

We analyze particle dynamics on $N$ dimensional one-sheet hyperboloid embedded in $N+1$ dimensional Minkowski space. The dynamical integrals constructed by $SO_\uparrow (1,N)$ symmetry of spacetime are used for the gauge-invariant Hamiltonian reduction. The physical phase-space parametrizes the set of all classical trajectories on the hyperboloid. In quantum case the operator ordering problem for the symmetry generators is solved by transformation to asymptotic variables. Canonical quantization leads to unitary irreducible representation of $SO_\uparrow (1,N)$ group on Hilbert space $L^2(S^{N-1})$.

Group effectiveness is determined by many things. It takes long and exacting effort to discover the precise combination that unlocks the door to success. Although many of the forces that shape group behavior may be intangible, involving subtle factors of personality, much of group activity can be analyzed scientifically. In this booklet, the ninth of the New Directions for Student Councils series, the author introduces the reader to the complex study of forces that determine how well--or how badly--a group works. The study of group dynamics, no matter how scientific, will not provide an organization with all of the answers to all of its problems. The editors are confident, however, that if those who are involved in the student activities program understand factors that influence group work, the result can be more constructive group behavior and more dynamic activities. Topics under discussion in the booklet include: (1) group dynamics--what's it all about, (2) effective student leadership, (3) popular theories about leaders, (4) forces active in student groups, (5) the effective student group, (6) group behavior, and (7) evaluating leadership skills. This paper explores the group dynamics among three groups of students involved in collaborative learning in mathematical modelling activities. It reports how group dynamics were established and their influence on the students' mathematical problem-solving endeavours. Through video analyses, discourse structures were identified to suggest the dominant roles students play within the group. Frequency counts of the discourse structures accounted for the group dynamics that shape the effectiveness of the learning that takes place in the groups. Implications from the findings are discussed.

This article reports on the development of a scale used to assess and measure group dynamics during group supervision counselling courses (practicum and internship). A 20-item Likert-type scale was administered to 200 counsellors-in-training master's students. Reliability and validity data are described. An exploratory factor analysis yielded three factors that accounted for 64.4% of the variance. The results of the study support the assessment of group dynamics using the "Group Dynamics Inventory". Additionally, the study suggests the possible utility of the "Group Dynamics Inventory" as a teaching tool to help supervisors to monitor the dynamics in courses that involve group supervision in counsellor training settings such as practica, internships, and fieldwork placements

We show that the n-dimensional MICZ-Kepler system arises from symplectic reduction of a simple mechanical system on the cone over the rotation group SO(n). As a corollary we derive an elementary formula for its general solution. The punch-line of our computation is that the additional MICZ-Kepler $|\phi|^2/r^2$ type potential term is the rotational part of the cone's kinetic energy.

The report summarizes the recent joint research activities of thirteen experimental social psychologists from U.S. and European universities, who are informally organized to plan and conduct studied on conflict between individuals and groups.

This study compared and contrasted the effects of group dynamics using Strategic Air Command KC-135 officer aircrew members who operate under an integral crew concept and Military Airlift Command officer aircrew members who operate under a non-integral crew concept. The study compared level of group cohesiveness and intragroup communications between the two types of crew structures. It also examined the degree of confidence crewmembers had in the people with whom they flew, attitudes regarding flying safety norms, and the type of crew structure preferred in a combat environment. Finally, this study sought to determine if crewmembers perceived that navigators had a greater opportunity to assume a leadership role in the crew with whom they flew if performing their duties under an integral crew structure. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SMALL GROUP COMPATIBILITY AND ACHIEVEMENT IN THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM STUDY LABORATORY BLOCK PROGRAM WAS TESTED. STUDENTS IN 14 CLASSES FROM FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS WERE ASSIGNED TO FOUR-MEMBER LABORATORY GROUPS CLASSIFIED AS COMPATIBLE OR INCOMPATIBLE. GROUP CLASSIFICATION WAS VALIDATED BY OBSERVERS WHO WERE NOT AWARE OF THE INITIAL CLASSIFICATION. THE TWO CATEGORIES OF GROUPS WERE EQUATED FOR SCHOLASTIC ABILITY AND BIOLOGY ACHIEVEMENT. DATA INCLUDED EFFICIENCY RATINGS AND PARTICIPATION INDEXES DETERMINED BY OBSERVERS, AND FINAL TEST RESULTS. SPEARMAN RANK ORDER CORRELATIONS BETWEEN PREDICTED GROUP COMPATIBILITY SCORES, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM STUDY BLUE VERSION FINAL EXAMINATION SCORES, MEAN GROUP EFFICIENCY SCORES, AND GROUP PARTICIPATION INDEX SCORES WERE DETERMINED. Greatly expanded power, facilities, and communications/sensing requirements appear to demand a new structures technology for construction in space. Requirements to construct huge structural arrays with precision surfaces in space will need creative research efforts to identify practical structural elements and construction techniques. Requirements for advanced transportation structures were defined to respond to the space transportation theme. Because of the criticality of thermal structures to achieve lower cost transportation systems, renewed emphasis on technology in this area is recommended. A second technology needing renewed emphasis is the area of recovery and landing technology structures to permit full reuse of launch vehicle propulsion elements.

This paper will describe the authors' efforts to model the financial operations and organizational behavior of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (known by its French initials, GSPC), using Stella(R) version 9.0, a commercially-available system dynamics software package. The model aggregates empirical knowledge and collective expert opinion on the GSPC financial subsystem into a single cognitive tool.[1] Using the model for exploratory analysis suggests answers to questions such as how funding affects the quantity and type of GSPC operations, how the financial and operational aspects of the organization change over its life cycle, and what policymakers should expect next from the GSPC. Finally, the model allows users to see the full range of effects from different policy choices, including effects policymakers may not intend.

This paper describes an analytical study of language, culture, cognition, and their contribution to concepts in an upper ontology to support asymmetric and irregular warfare for the U.S. Marine Corps. This ontology is designed to interact with decision-support applications for fighting the global war on terror. The long-term goal of this effort is to understand and predict the actions of terrorist individuals and groups from diverse cultures. The fusion of language and cultural factors, such as religion, and their contribution to cognition is explored vis-a-vis ingroup-outgroup perceptions that influence and reflect thought patterns and behavior. The interaction between natural language, culture and cognition provides a way to augment an integrated upper ontology with language-related and cross-cultural concepts that can support intelligence analysts. This paper introduces two models that provide an insight into topics relevant to cognitive-information operations. The hypothesis and suggested experimental approach are focused on methods and metrics to generate group profiles and to detect an individual's group bias from selected word patterns.

This module is designed to facilitate communication among students and between students and teachers by conducting selected classroom exercises which will increase pupils' understanding of communication processes and improve their communication with each other. The module consists of a pretest, posttest, and four exercises entitled: Introductions, Getting Acquainted, Listening, and Problem Solving. The paper evaluates the use of group dynamics training for Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) aides in Ohio and assesses low income homemakers' adoption of group participation. The treatment group of aides was given week-long experimental group dynamics training which was coupled with nutrition and money management subject matter. A second group participated in two, day-long group dynamics training sessions, and a third group had no training in group dynamics except for a brief introduction. The aides studied were the total population of EFNEP aides in three Ohio Extension areas. Aides in the first two groups registered an increase in positive attitude toward group teaching over time. The second and third groups registered an increase in knowledge of group dynamics methods over time whereas the first group remained stationary. Regarding adoption of group methodology, the treatment group significantly attained the training objectives. The data indicate, however, that other factors besides training can influence aide adoption of group methodology. The data also show a substantial proportion of low income EFNEP homemakers desire some kind of group activity, especially rural women, metropolitan black women, and women with few years of schooling. We present a novel system of equations to describe the evolution of self-organized structured societies (biological or human) composed of several trait groups. The suggested approach is based on the combination of ideas employed in the theory of biological populations, system theory, and utility theory. The evolution equations are defined as utility rate equations, whose parameters are characterized by the utility of each group with respect to the society as a whole and by the mutual utilities of groups with respect to each other. We analyze in detail the cases of two groups (cooperators and defectors) and of three groups (cooperators, defectors, and regulators) and find that, in a self-organized society, neither defectors nor regulators can overpass the maximal fractions of about 10% each. This is in agreement with the data for bee and ant colonies. The classification of societies by their distance from equilibrium is proposed. We apply the formalism to rank the countries according to the introduced metric quantifying their relative stability, which depends on the cost of defectors and regulators as well as their respective population fractions. We find a remarkable concordance with more standard economic ranking based, for instance, on GDP per capita.

LONG-TERM GOAL. The ultimate goal is to develop and apply effective and robust computational tools for nonlinear dynamics of three-dimensional waves and wave groups. Of immediate interests are the spatial/temporal coherence of such waves and the nonlinear mechanism of such coherent structures. This work is the first step of a long-term effort to obtain robust realistic simulations of nonlinear wavefield evolution including wind, current, and shallow water (bottom variation) effects. OBJECTIVES: To develop and improve efficiency and robustness of the high-order spectral (HOS) method for longtime/ large-space simulations of nonlinear wave-field evolutions. To develop methodologies for data assimilation and forecasting of nonlinear wave-field evolution dynamics. To study the coherence of three-dimensional steep waves and the mechanism for the development of such coherence structures and properties.

Topics discussed: classes of problems, algorithmic representation of social dynamics, identify and evaluate soft metrics, mathematical models of strategic interactions, models for soft metrics, formalism for scenario specification, validation and technological challenges, knowledge bases and model refinement and concluding remarks.

The goals were to develop an expert consensus on the fundamentals and dynamics underlying fringe group formation and sustainment, to identify leading researchable questions that push at the boundaries of understanding and practice and to formulate some disruptive (i.e., transformative) strategies for acquiring the needed data.

We develop a general approach to the nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum impurity systems for arbitrary coupling strength. The numerical renormalization group is used to generate a complete basis set necessary for the correct description of the time evolution. We benchmark our method with the exact analytical solution for the resonant-level model. As a first application, we investigate the equilibration of a quantum dot subject to a sudden change of the gate voltage and external magnetic field. Two distinct relaxation times are identified for the spin and charge dynamics.

We implement the dynamical renormalization group (DRG) using the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation for the real-time nonequilibrium dynamics in hot plasmas. The focus is on the study of the relaxation of gauge and fermionic mean fields and on the quantum kinetics of the photon and fermion distribution functions. As a concrete physical prediction, we find that for a QGP of temperature T sim 200 MeV and lifetime 10 < t < 50 fm/c there is a new contribution to the hard (k \sim T) photon production from off-shell bremsstrahlung (q rightarrow q gamma and bar{q} rightarrow bar{q} gamma) at just O (alpha) that grows logarithmically in time and is comparable to the known on-shell Compton scattering and pair annihilation at O(alpha alpha_s).

We prove that in genus bigger than $2$, the mapping class group action on $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{C})$-characters is ergodic. This implies that almost every representation $\pi_1 S \longrightarrow \mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{C})$ is the holonomy of a branched affine structure on $S$, where $S$ is a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$.

We obtain exact analytic expressions for a class of functions expressed as integrals over the Haar measure of the unitary group in d dimensions. Based on these general mathematical results, we investigate generic dynamical properties of complex open quantum systems, employing arguments from ensemble theory. We further generalize these results to arbitrary eigenvalue distributions, allowing a detailed comparison of typical regular and chaotic systems with the help of concepts from random matrix theory. To illustrate the physical relevance and the general applicability of our results we present a series of examples related to the fields of open quantum systems and nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics. These include the effect of initial correlations, the average quantum dynamical maps, the generic dynamics of system-environment pure state entanglement and, finally, the equilibration of generic open and closed quantum systems.

This report contains the results of a study conducted to investigate the limits of boundary layer methods, both the integral and field type formulations, for calculating three-dimensional turbulent separated flows. Test cases used to assess the boundary layer calculations included the DFVLR prolate spheroid at angle of attack and the NASA-Ames Wing C. Comparisons between boundary layer calculations and experimental data are presented for these test cases along with observations, conclusions and recommendations. Dynamic equations for quantum fields far from equilibrium are derived by use of functional renormalisation group techniques. The obtained equations are non-perturbative and lead substantially beyond mean-field and quantum Boltzmann type approximations. The approach is based on a regularised version of the generating functional for correlation functions where times greater than a chosen cutoff time are suppressed. As a central result, a time evolution equation for the non-equilibrium effective action is derived, and the time-evolution of the Green functions is computed within a vertex expansion. It is shown that this agrees with the dynamics derived from the 1/N-expansion of the two-particle irreducible effective action.

This paper documents the dynamics of the social interactions within two small groups of sixth grade students as they solved problems and attempted to understand the concepts related to the nature of matter and molecular theory. Similarities and differences of social interactions between the two groups are compared, and interpretations presented for how students might build on one another's ideas to construct their own personal meanings of the scientific concepts. Evidence from videotape transcripts of student interactions and student writing showed that students changed individual language explanations of phenomena. The teacher provided the support necessary to collectively reconstruct scientific explanations. There was no evidence that more knowledgeable peers were present in this sixth grade class, except for those who could remember the scientific language provided by the teacher and the text, which has the implications for how teachers structure experiences, problem solving and group interactions in science. Students constructed more useful and meaningful understanding as a result of sharing ideas in scientific language during problem solving activities. (Author)
