The current study aims to investigate whether perceptual expectations based on statistical regularity influence the earliest stages of visual processing, indexed by the C1 visual evoked potential originating from the primary visual cortex. Electrophysiological data will be collected while participants are engaged in a target detection task at the centre of the screen and three types of stimuli sequences with differing levels of statistical regularity in the periphery. In predicted sequences (60% of all sequences), two gratings of the same orientation will be presented 5 times. In unpredicted sequences (20% of all sequences), gratings with the same orientation will be repeated 4 times but the 5th pair of gratings will be of different orientation, thus violating a previously established expectation of regularity. Lastly, unpredictable sequences (20% of all sequences) will contain grating pairs of 5 different orientations in random order, in which precise expectations about the orientations of grating stimuli cannot be established. In line with the predictive coding hypothesis, we expect to observe an increased amplitude of the C1 component in response to the 5th stimulus pair in the unpredicted sequence compared to the 5th stimulus pairs in the predicted sequence, indicative of a larger prediction error for stimuli that violate statistical regularities. These results will contribute to the debate on whether and how early sensory processing is gated by top-down factors.

The library shut down in the first COVID wave nearly two years ago and as a result, circulation dipped slightly. We introduce a notion of volatility uncertainty in discrete time and define the corresponding analogue of Peng's G-expectation. In the continuous-time limit, the resulting sublinear expectation converges weakly to the G-expectation. This can be seen as a Donsker-type result for the G-Brownian motion.

We provide an overview of the results we have attained in the last decade on the identification of quantum structures in cognition and, more specifically, in the formalization and representation of natural concepts. We firstly discuss the quantum foundational reasons that led us to investigate the mechanisms of formation and combination of concepts in human reasoning, starting from the empirically observed deviations from classical logical and probabilistic structures. We then develop our quantum-theoretic perspective in Fock space which allows successful modeling of various sets of cognitive experiments collected by different scientists, including ourselves. In addition, we formulate a unified explanatory hypothesis for the presence of quantum structures in cognitive processes, and discuss our recent discovery of further quantum aspects in concept combinations, namely, 'entanglement' and 'indistinguishability'. We finally illustrate perspectives for future research.

A total of 196 first year Principles of Economics I students participated in a study examining how students' expectations about their course and grades are related to the grades they actually receive. We empirically test whether there is a significant difference between the students' grade expectations and the actual grades they receive, and examine what factors contribute to this difference. In particular, we examine how much students' expectations about their grades are conditioned by specific student characteristics, as well as by their attitude/behaviour over the semester. We hypothesise that students, like many from Generation Y, often make confident but also false predictions about their ability, but as reality sets in, they modify their behaviour accordingly and set more reasonable, realistic expectations to achieve their desired goals. We find that they are indeed overoptimistic, but there appears to be a gap between their optimism and actual performance.

In consecutive quarters, two studies were conducted at a two-year vocational/technical college to determine how different goal structures within the learning environment could influence student expectations, achievement, and perceptions of the causes of learning outcomes. The first study investigated three goal structures (i.e., cooperative, individualistic, and cooperative with group competition), while the second added a "homogeneous group" cooperative condition. Study subjects were students from sections of a general psychology course, who were given expectation measures and individual achievement tests. In the cooperative condition, students worked in small groups during their section meetings to help prepare for exams, which were taken on individual and group bases. In the group competition condition, students similarly worked in groups, with the highest-scoring groups receiving bonus points. In the individualistic condition, students worked individually in their sections and participated in whole class discussions. In the homogeneous group condition, students selected their own small work group, as opposed to having these groups teacher-assigned. Results from the two studies provided a mixed pattern of findings. While the first study provided support for the cooperative model in terms of improved expectations and achievement, poor student performance in the second study greatly diminished the benefits of cooperation. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on a variety of school skills that preschool and kindergarten teachers expect children to display in regular kindergarten classrooms. The Skill Expectation Survey for Kindergarten Readiness was administered to 21 preschool teachers and 28 kindergarten teachers from two school districts in Kansas. The results of the survey indicated that preschool teachers had higher expectations than kindergarten teachers for kindergarten entry skills. Preschool teachers' expectations approximated kindergarten teachers' expectations of children's performance at kindergarten exit. (Author/PCB)
