1DTIC AD0260250: CONCEALMENT DESIGN BY ENGINEERING METHODS
By Defense Technical Information Center
An engineering method has been developed for minimizing the contrast of a Navy vessel under specified conditions. The purpose of this report is to describe the method and to illustrate the effectiveness of its use. The visual target selected to demonstrate the method was a destroyer. To facilitate the calculations, the form of the destroyer was simplified. A three dimensional model was employed approximating but reducing in complexity the general structure of the ship by retaining the actual side, top and front PROJECTEDAREAS. Although the sighting ranges of an aerial observer were minimized by the concealment paints, the sighting ranges of an observer at sea level are greater than for the same ship painted with standard Navy paint. The appearance of the two ships when viewed against the horizon sky from the front and from the rear. In the first case the lighter paint on the standard vessel has made it lighter than the background whereas the concealment paint makes it appear as a dark target. From the rear both are seen in the shadow and are dark targets, with the standard vessel slightly less visible.

4DTIC AD0801005: ENGINEERING METHODS FOR THE DESIGN AND SELECTION OF MATERIALS AGAINST FRACTURE
By Defense Technical Information Center
Various approaches to the brittle fracture problem were reviewed and evaluated in terms of their applicability for satisfying ATAC's need for engineering procedures to be applied to materials selection and design criteria for the prevention of fracture in the future use of high-strength materials. Linear-elastic fracture mechanics technology was selected as the most applicable approach. A comprehensive review of the state of the art in fracture mechanics technology is presented. The fracture mechanics data available in the literature for high-strength steels, aluminum and titanium alloys were reviewed and evaluated with respect to their validity as fracture toughness parameters. All applicable fracture toughness data are tabulated. Additional fracture toughness data were generated in the program for HP-9-4-25 steel, 7079-T6 aluminum and 6Al-4V titanium. Crack growth rates as a function of the stress intensity were also determined for the steel and aluminum alloys. Engineering procedures and criteria for utilizing fracture mechanics technology were developed.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
NASA's Advanced Engineering Environment (AEE) is a research and development program that will improve collaboration among design engineers for launch vehicle conceptual design and provide the infrastructure (methods and framework) necessary to enable that environment. In this paper, three major technical challenges facing the AEE program are identified, and three specific design problems are selected to demonstrate how advanced methods can improve current design activities. References are made to studies that demonstrate these design problems and methods, and these studies will provide the detailed information and check cases to support incorporation of these methods into the AEE. This paper provides background and terminology for discussing the launch vehicle conceptual design problem so that the diverse AEE user community can participate in prioritizing the AEE development effort.

14ERIC ED544736: Characterizing Design Learning Through The Use Of Language: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Engineering Designers. Research Brief
By ERIC
This analysis, that utilizes data from part of the Academic Pathways Study (APS) of the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), found that as a result of taking a course in engineering design and/or studying engineering for four years, students acquire engineering design language that is common to a larger community of practice as well as situated in their own programs and institutions of higher learning. The study also suggests that engineering design language shapes the knowledge that students have about engineering design. Finally, students did not always put this knowledge into practice, suggesting the need for educational improvements, as well as research to better define the kinds of knowledge necessary to bridge

16Engineering Methods For Robust Product Design : Using Taguchi Methods In Technology And Product Development
By Fowlkes, William Y., 1954-
This analysis, that utilizes data from part of the Academic Pathways Study (APS) of the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), found that as a result of taking a course in engineering design and/or studying engineering for four years, students acquire engineering design language that is common to a larger community of practice as well as situated in their own programs and institutions of higher learning. The study also suggests that engineering design language shapes the knowledge that students have about engineering design. Finally, students did not always put this knowledge into practice, suggesting the need for educational improvements, as well as research to better define the kinds of knowledge necessary to bridge

20DTIC ADA146934: Determining Managerial Methods Of Productivity Measurement Within Civil Engineering Design Units
By Defense Technical Information Center
The purpose of this thesis is to determine a managerial method for productivity measurement within a large level Civil Engineering Design Section. Current methods of productivity measurement were reviewed and found to be deficient. A relatively new method, Constrained Facet Analysis, was chosen. Design section inputs and outputs were determined. A data set was generated to a predetermined efficiency result. The Constrained Facet Analysis model was run using the generated data, and its computer output was compared to the predetermined efficiency result. The comparison showed identical results for the computer model and the predetermined efficiencies. The authors concluded that the computerized Constrained Facet Analysis model is an accurate and valid method of determining productivity within a base level Civil Engineering Design Section. The limitations of this method of productivity measurement are discussed. Further research, using data from real design sections, is recommended before implementation of the model. The model should be used as a managerial aid to improve organizational performance. It should not be used to evaluate manager's performance.

23DTIC ADA031252: Corps-Wide Conference On Computer-Aided Design In Structural Engineering. Volume X. Stiffness Methods, Frames, And Military Construction,
By Defense Technical Information Center
Matrix analysis, which employs the finite element method, is the accepted Corps technique for analyzing structures. It is a powerful tool for the analysis of two-dimensional continuums, as well as for the design of beams, trusses, and frames. Recent advances in interactive graphics will make these analysis even more useful to the designer. This paper briefly summarizes the basic concepts and coding procedures common to all program packages. This report deals with computer-aided design for building frames, specifically in the area of analysis programs. Three examples of the work done in the Sacramento District are provided. In recent years, architectural and engineering design for military construction has been complicated by new regulations and technical factors. Environmental and energy conservation considerations, the effects of rapid inflation on material and construction costs, and the effect of energy shortages have all added to the problem. With all the complex factors facing Corps designers, more effective use of the computer is required.

The system was developed to participate in the Association for Unmanned Vehicle System's (AUVS) First International Aerial Robotics Competition which was held in Atlanta, Georgia on the Georgia Tech campus on July 29th, 1991. As development time and budget were extremely limited, the team elected to attempt the design using concurrent engineering design methods. These methods were validated in an IDA study by Winner 1 in the late-1980s to be particularly adept at handling the difficulties to design presented by these limitations.

30DTIC AD0742341: Algorithmic And Computational Aspects Of The Use Of Optimization Methods In Engineering Design
By Defense Technical Information Center
The paper deals with the relationship of recent advances in optimization theory, algorithms, and computation to problems of engineering design. The use of point-based optimality criteria for sensitivity analysis is discussed using as an example the design of a cylindrical torsion bar. The use of branch and bound methods for handling nonconvex programming problems to get around the problem of multiple local solutions is illustrated with a problem of reservoir design. An automatic procedure based on a new language for describing mathematical functions is shown as a way to interface between algebraic descriptions of design problems and computer codes implementing more powerful algorithms. This is illustrated by a problem in the design of a space launch vehicle. The capability of converting any optimization problem to a separable problem--thus facilitating the computerized description of the problem--is illustrated by aspects of the design of a vertical corrugated transverse bulkhead. Finally, comments are made concerning the future relationship between optimal engineering design problems and algorithms for solving them.

31NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910000997: Global Optimization Methods For Engineering Design
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The problem is to find a global minimum for the Problem P. Necessary and sufficient conditions are available for local optimality. However, global solution can be assured only under the assumption of convexity of the problem. If the constraint set S is compact and the cost function is continuous on it, existence of a global minimum is guaranteed. However, in view of the fact that no global optimality conditions are available, a global solution can be found only by an exhaustive search to satisfy Inequality. The exhaustive search can be organized in such a way that the entire design space need not be searched for the solution. This way the computational burden is reduced somewhat. It is concluded that zooming algorithm for global optimizations appears to be a good alternative to stochastic methods. More testing is needed; a general, robust, and efficient local minimizer is required. IDESIGN was used in all numerical calculations which is based on a sequential quadratic programming algorithm, and since feasible set keeps on shrinking, a good algorithm to find an initial feasible point is required. Such algorithms need to be developed and evaluated.

Our efforts have focused on an architecture for the development of a design and modeling framework for knowledge-based engineering. Emphasis has been placed on generic methods applicable to both defense and commercial electro- mechanical systems. This report will address both the results of the small business innovation research program and subsequent investments by Ford Motor Company, Lockheed-Martin and other system manufacturers which have focused on engineering analysis, geometric modeling, meshing, visualization, and simulation methods. The report will also highlight the leveraging of in-house federal laboratory research programs, specifically, materials process design research within the Wright Laboratory, Materials Directorate. All of the above investments and interactions have contributed toward further advancing and applying knowledge-based engineering methods for integrated product and process design.

39NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20090007804: Use Of Probabilistic Engineering Methods In The Detailed Design And Development Phases Of The NASA Ares Launch Vehicle
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is in the midst of a space exploration program called Constellation to send crew and cargo to the international Space Station, to the moon, and beyond. As part of the Constellation program, a new launch vehicle, Ares I, is being developed by NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Designing a launch vehicle with high reliability and increased safety requires a significant effort in understanding design variability and design uncertainty at the various levels of the design (system, element, subsystem, component, etc.) and throughout the various design phases (conceptual, preliminary design, etc.). In a previous paper [1] we discussed a probabilistic functional failure analysis approach intended mainly to support system requirements definition, system design, and element design during the early design phases. This paper provides an overview of the application of probabilistic engineering methods to support the detailed subsystem/component design and development as part of the "Design for Reliability and Safety" approach for the new Ares I Launch Vehicle. Specifically, the paper discusses probabilistic engineering design analysis cases that had major impact on the design and manufacturing of the Space Shuttle hardware. The cases represent important lessons learned from the Space Shuttle Program and clearly demonstrate the significance of probabilistic engineering analysis in better understanding design deficiencies and identifying potential design improvement for Ares I. The paper also discusses the probabilistic functional failure analysis approach applied during the early design phases of Ares I and the forward plans for probabilistic design analysis in the detailed design and development phases.
