1DTIC ADA446888: Embracing Statistical Challenges In The Information Technology Age
By Defense Technical Information Center
Information Technology is creating an exciting time for statistics. In this article, we review the diverse sources of IT data in three clusters: IT core, IT systems, and IT fringe. The new data forms, huge data volumes, and high data speeds of IT are contrasted against the constraints on storage, transmission and computation to point to the challenges and opportunities. In particular, we describe the impacts of IT on a typical statistical investigation of data collection, data visualization, and model fitting, with an emphasis on computation and feature selection. Moreover, two research projects on network tomography and arctic cloud detection are used throughout the paper to bring the discussions to a concrete level.

2DTIC AD1003727: Airpower In The Information Age: Embracing TCP/IP Within Airborne Networks
By Defense Technical Information Center
Given the challenges posed by the Anti-Access Area Denial (A2/AD) threat, it is crucial for the military to possess agile and adaptive airborne networks. Current legacy airborne communication systems are not sufficient to meet this challenge due to the extreme limitations on the type of information that they can send combined with the lack of dynamic self-forming and adaptive characteristics need to operate in a non-permissive environment. In contrast, the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model provides an open and adaptive construct that has proved successful at seamlessly connecting large numbers of users to a vast array of applications. Airborne TCP/IP communication systems within DoD are currently in the infancy with systems like the Tactical Targeting Network Technology (TTNT) and the Multi-RoleTactical Common Data Link (MR-TCDL) appearing from the research labs. The U.S. military is now at a critical junction where decisions made today will have an enormous impact on the information sharing capabilities that will be available in the future A2/AD fight. Senior leaders must resist the temptation to be complacent with the current systems and instead forge ahead with a modern information age communications paradigm. Failure to do so will lead to a military paralyzed by the fog a war in the A2/AD environment due to the inability to rapidly and reliably share information.

Selected Papers From The 2007 Central States Conference The Title Of This Volume, "Learning Languages In The Digital Age," Focuses On The Integration Of Technology To Promote Authentic And Interactive Communication Within And Outside The Walls Of The Language Classroom. Major Innovations Have Shifted Internet Use From A Consumer To A Participatory Model; That Is, Previously, Internet Users Were Placed In The Role Of Consumers Who Had Access To Materials And Information (this Phase Of Internet Integration Is Commonly Referred To As Web 1.0). Now Internet Users Can Become Producers Of Resources Themselves (Web 2.0 Is A Term Used To Describe This Shift In Internet Use From A Consumer Model To A Participatory Model). While Traditional Consumer And Communication Applications Continue, Widespread Participation As Producers Of Resources Has Jumped Dramatically. Blogging, Podcasting, Wikis, And Other Forms Of Democratized Media Are All Examples Of Applications That Promise To Challenge Traditional Systems And Roles And To Enhance The Nature Of Language Teaching And Learning. This Shift From Consumer To Producer Allows Language Learners To Take A More Active Role In The Learning Process, Participate In Authentic Communication And Create Products That Can Serve As Authentic Assessment Of Language Production. This Volume Provides The Theoretical Foundation For Effective Language Teaching And Learning While Providing Practical Applications For The Language Classroom. Each Of The Three Sections Represents An Important Aspect Of Language Education Designed To Promote Best Practices And To Increase Student Achievement: (1) Embracing Technology: Tools Teachers Can Use To Improve Language Learning; (2) Teacher Education And Professional Development: Agents Of Change; And (3) Teaching Culture Through Divergent Paths.

The title of this volume, "Learning Languages in the Digital Age," focuses on the integration of technology to promote authentic and interactive communication within and outside the walls of the language classroom.
