A field study was conducted to evaluate how U.S. Navy Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) personnel would use a user-centric CDROM (UC-CD), the equivalent paper document (PAPER), and its republished Web version (RP-WEB) to complete several problems that represented their actual work (e.g., prepare weather briefs, retrieve specific METOC facts). A methodology was developed and used to log the time spent in subtasks (i.e., search for information, interpret information) on these problems. Military METOC personnel at two facilities were recruited as subjects. Results showed that the type of interface had general effects on performance. For example, the browse time for information was longer in three problems using the RP-WEB interface compared to using the PAPER document. The longer browse times were not due to Web downloading delays. Recommendations are provided for improved METOC interface design.

In this paper, we will investigate the scope and application of these blast guidance documents. Particular attention will be paid to each manual's performance and design objectives as implemented through their respective protection categories and resulting structural design requirements.

This study aimed at designing a model of instructional materials for Academic Writing Course focusing on research paper writing. The model was designed based on the Curriculum at the English Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Art Education of IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia. This model was developed in order to improve students' skill in writing research paper which is one of the prerequisite tasks before graduating from university. The steps of this research and development consist of needs analysis, document analysis, model design, model development, and model experimentation. The researchers conducted needs analysis to the fifth semester students and three academic writing teachers, in order to generate information dealing with the students' needs in academic writing course materials. The needs analysis and documents analysis were dug up through questionnaire, interview, and discussion among students and academic writing teachers. The documents analyzed in this study were syllabus, lesson plan, and the existing textbook. The model design used is derived from Borg and Gall (1983) and Sukmadinata (2008), in which there are four steps, i.e. (1) exploration phase; (2) model development phase; (3) model experimentation phase; and (4) dissemination and model implementation phase. The results of needs analysis questionnaire reveal that students need to be taught how to write academic writing in terms of journal article since it will be the final project of the students at the end of their study in university. Instructional materials with different strategies focused on research paper writing are needed by the students.

The designer had previously taken screenshots of the documents to display on a personal website, and over time, the original documents were lost due to hard drive failure. These screenshots of those original documents are the only files that could be found. This paper identifies three basic criteria for good business communications on an international level--clarity, effectiveness, and good will--and presents a model for effective information transfer via electronic media. It argues that electronic mail (e-mail) messages do not meet these criteria even though more and more domestic and international business communication is being conducted exclusively through electronic data transmission. It also points out that there are fundamental differences in the way people examine and react to the same information, depending on whether it is presented on a computer monitor screen or in print media. The paper examines these differences and develops a general set of principles for document design, layout, organization, and structure, to maximize efficient interpersonal information transfer via electronic media. These principles are reduced to a checklist that can be applied to the design and development of electronic business communications. The paper concludes that while most business communicators are aware of the potential impact of the media on their messages, this fact seems to be ignored when they use e-mail and electronic note systems. The application of a few simple design principles and the use of straightforward checklist can have rich potential rewards in developing successful and efficient electronic business communications. I had just started working at the Maxis Core Technology Group on "Project X" aka "Dollhouse", and Will Wright broughtthis code in one morning, to demonstrate his design for the motives, feedback loop and failure conditions of the simulatedpeople. While going through old papers, I ran across this print-out that I had saved, so I scanned it and cleaned the imagesup, and got permission from Will to publish it. This code is a interesting example of game design, programming and prototyping techniques. The Sims code has certainlychanged a lot since Will wrote this original prototype code. For example, there is no longer any "stress" motive. And thegame doesn't store motives in global variables, of course. My hope is that this code will give you a glimpse of how Will Wright designs games, and what was going on in his head atthe time! -Don Hopkins
