The first fair was held in 1977 and was organized by Jim Warren and Bob Relling. At the time, it was the biggest computer show in the world, intended to popularize the peronal computer in the home. This first fair took place on April 16-17, 1977, in San Francisco Civic Auditorium and Brooks Hall, and saw the debut of the Commodre PET, presented by Chuck Peddle, and the Apple II, presented by then 21-year-old Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. There were about 180 exhibitors, among them Intel, MITS, and Digitial Research. More than 12,000 people visited the fair. For both humans and machines, the ability to learn and categorize natural scenes as well as the objects within is an essential and important functionality. The bulk of this talk will focus on a computer vision model we developed recently to tackle to the problem of categorizing complex real-life images. To motivate this topic, I will present a series of recent human psychophysics studies on natural scene recognition. All these experiments converge to one prominent phenomena of the human visual system: humans are extremely efficient and rapid in capturing the overall gist of natural images. We can categorize a scene as a beach image or a rock concert image in literally a split of a second. Can we achieve such a feat in computer vision modeling? We propose here a generative Bayesian hierarchical model that learns to categorize natural images in a weakly supervised fashion. We represent an image by a collection of local regions, denoted as codewords obtained by unsupervised clustering. Each region is then represented as part of a `theme'. In previous work, such themes were learnt from hand-annotations of experts, while our method learns the theme distribution as well as the codewords distribution over the themes without such supervision. The Computers for Foster Families Program supports foster families by increasing computer and Internet access for some of the region's most vulnerable children.

This half hour video is a recording of an Elluminate training session from the February, 2010, cyberconference organized by the Capital Region Society for Technology in Education (CRSTE.org). The audio of the trainer (me) could be improved by recording the audio locally using a second laptop, an external audio recording device (such as a Samson Zoom H4) or by some other means, and then merging that audio with the recorded screen activity.

The first section contains items discussing the pros and cons of such use; the second section deals with organizational aspects of computer use in the schools; and advice for teachers is offered in the third section. The fourth section reviews specific software programs; the fifth section describes and evaluates programs in schools; and the final section samples research. (SR)

Thorton, and Gareth Locksley) examines the last phase of technological development, the communication phase, as it relates to computer technology in education; (2) "Computers in the Curriculum" (A. G. Shannon) examines the integration of computers into the school curriculum in light of the development of information processing technology; (3) "Intelligent Computer-Aided Instruction" (A. G. Shannon) discusses some controversial issues in artificial intelligence as signs of confusion about computers, and suggests that there is a philosophical basis for this confusion; and (4) "Computer Technology and the Curriculum: Some Questions" (A. G. Shannon) raises some concerns about the rapid inclusion of computer technology in the world of education, and questions some of the assumptions underlying the educational use of computers and their possible effects on the curriculum. Begun in 1979, the Waterways Project, which provides literary arts program experience for at risk students in New York City, is described in this paper. The Waterways Project was started as a service organization for small press publishers and writers. The paper recounts the project's involvement in book fairs, computer programming, a literary arts publishing program, and adult poetry workshops. The director of the project relates of several students' experiences with individualized lessons at the computer. The paper also describes the project's clientele, i.e., students with drug problems, high school dropouts, and youths in transition. The goal of the project is identified in the paper as giving students the encouragement to try to have their work published, which is intended to give them direction. An appendix containing the project's history concludes the paper. (MS)
