Teachers participating in technology training must move beyond training classrooms to apply teaching methods that facilitate technology integration in their classrooms. Most adoption literature comes from proponents of innovations and outcomes resulting from applications of innovations, but more case studies of teacher experiences in technology integration processes are needed to better understand how to facilitate integration. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent teachers: (1) alter their teaching methods; and (2) integrate technology into their classroom curriculum during and after a technology-training course designed to prepare teachers to use technologies to support their teaching and student learning. The course under investigation was offered in both online (OL) and face-to-face (F2F) delivery modes. Comparison of both modes of instruction on teacher professional development within the subject area of technology training and implementation was conducted. Case study methods were applied to gain an understanding of the experiences of teachers as they moved through an OL or F2F course designed to prepare teachers for integrating technology into the curriculum. Complementary data collection processes were used in each of the eight cases to provide depth and breadth in identifying and analyzing the barriers and processes affecting the impact of the training course. The study suggests that teachers increase their use of technology in the classroom during and after training in the process of integrating technology into the curriculum. Further, teachers do not alter their existing teaching methods as they integrate technology, but use technology in ways that support their current classroom practices. The study confirmed the existence of intrinsic and extrinsic barriers that interfere with teachers' abilities to integrate technology into the classroom curriculum. Several other factors that impact technology integration were noted in this study. (Contains 23 references.) (AEF)

This paper reports on a three-year study of a model that uses the tenets of constructionism to integrate technology into a constructivist curriculum. The model has been used in regular face-to-face courses, in interactive instructional television courses, and in an online course. The following three significant themes emerged from analysis of the data: (1) the nature and characteristics of successful learners; (2) the power of project-based instruction; and (3) the power of interaction and collaboration. The model has proved to be effective both from the standpoint of being able to achieve the course objectives and the students' view of their success and learning in the classes. This presentation will provide an overview of current human spaceflight operations. It will also describe how future exploration missions will have to adapt and evolve in order to deal with more complex missions and communication latencies. Additionally, there are many implications regarding advanced automation and robotics, and this presentation will outline future human-automation-robotic integration challenges.

According to Bloch´s Law, the perceived brightness of brief, low-intensity visual stimuli is determined by the total amount of light energy, that is, luminance x duration. This project poses the question whether this temporal luminance integration is observable across saccadic eye movements, that is, whether two brief flashed bars (henceforth “flashes”) presented in the same retinal position right before and right after a saccade are integrated in terms of luminance. Participants will first be fixating on a fixation cross (e.g. on the left side of the screen). As soon as the go-signal appears (a 100 ms flash in the middle of the screen), they will perform a saccade towards it as quickly as possible . After the flash disappears, a fixation point is presented where the center of the flash was to keep fixations steady. 40 ms after flash offset, a second flash, equiluminant to the first one, will be presented for 10 ms. In retinal coordinates, the position of the second flash can either be congruent with the first flash (same distance and direction relative to fixation) or incongruent (further to the right or left relative to fixation). Subjects are then asked to rate the perceived brightness of the post-saccadic flash. Furthermore, gaze and pupil dilation data will be collected.

This workshop grows out of the Research-Teaching Linkages working group of the National Academy for Integration of Research (NAIRTL). The group was established to focus on clarifying links between teaching and research, particularly on those sustaining the integration of research and teaching and learning. To date, NAIRTL has identified four research teaching linkages (research-led, research-orientated, research-based and research-informed teaching) to guide grant applicants and those wishing to publish in the research area of teaching and learning. These definitions are well grounded in the literature on research, teaching and learning internationally and served to provide a context for the session. The objective of the workshop was to discuss and critique the four ways of linking research, teaching and learning already provided by NAIRTL. This paper aims to examine the selected novels of Amitav Ghosh and highlight his existentialist conception of history and culture. The Circle of Reason, The Calcutta Chromosomes, The Hungry Tide, and The Shadow Lines are the novels chosen for this paper. He has realistically depicted the deplorable and difficult state of society, which is considered dynamic change in the society, in these novels

Originally coined to signify a style of pottery in southern Iraq, and by extension an associated people and a chronological period, the term "Ubaid" is now often used loosely to denote a vast Near Eastern interaction zone, characterized by similarities in material culture, particularly ceramic styles, which existed during the sixth and fifth millennia B.C. This zone extended over 2,000 km from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Straits of Hormuz, including parts of Anatolia and perhaps even the Caucasus. The volume contains twenty-three papers that explore what the "Ubaid" is, how it is identified, and how the Ubaid in one location compares to another in a distant location. The papers are the result of The Ubaid Expansion? Cultural Meaning, Identity and the Lead-up to Urbanism, an International Workshop held at Grey College, University of Durham, 20-22 April 2006.

Originally coined to signify a style of pottery in southern Iraq, and by extension an associated people and a chronological period, the term "Ubaid" is now often used loosely to denote a vast Near Eastern interaction zone, characterized by similarities in material culture, particularly ceramic styles, which existed during the sixth and fifth millennia B.C. This zone extended over 2,000 km from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Straits of Hormuz, including parts of Anatolia and perhaps even the Caucasus. The volume contains twenty-three papers that explore what the "Ubaid" is, how it is identified, and how the Ubaid in one location compares to another in a distant location. The papers are the result of The Ubaid Expansion? Cultural Meaning, Identity and the Lead-up to Urbanism, an International Workshop held at Grey College, University of Durham, 20-22 April 2006.

A chip-scale, highly-reconfigurable transmitter and receiver, which hetero-integrates Northrop Grummans novel phase-change switch (PCS) technology with commercial SiGe BiCMOS using 3D stacking has been demonstrated. Further miniaturization and performance improvements are being pursued through fully monolithic integration. The current state of the technology will be discussed followed by a discussion of the advantages, goals and challenges of fully monolithic integration.

A successful Web-based training (WBT) system must be highly adaptable to already existing training procedures and software in a special environment. In corporate environments internal communication and collaboration is usually standardized throughout the company. The success of a WBT system therefore mainly depends on the ability of the system to utilize the well known communication channels instead of defining new ones. WBT users do not want to deal with new software; companies have their standardized software packages installed on most of their computers and very often do not allow the installation of new ones. These considerations led to the design of GENTLE (GEnerated Networked Teaching and Learning Environment) as a flexible WBT platform rather than a fully integrated software package. This paper demonstrates the concept and features of GENTLE and describes the modules that make up the GENTLE system. Also outlined are the three steps to performing an online discussion using the high-level online collaboration tools of GENTLE. (AEF)
