This practitioner's guide was developed for instructors in schools and business and industry who need to gather materials and design, develop, and implement job-specific basic skills programs. It provides a practical model for establishing cost-effective basic skills and literacy programs. It also provides practical advice about how to use the information to develop instructional materials and basic skills job simulations. The guide covers the following ideas: why take a job-literacy approach?; what is literacy task analysis?; needs analysis; and conducting a literacy task analysis. A bibliography is included. Extensive appendixes provide a step-by-step walk-through for gathering or developing materials for a literacy program for a company or industry. They include site interview guidelines, materials for low-literate adult learners, vocabulary exercises, sample lessons, readability formulas, and resources. (KC)

The current economic and political environment has increased the pressure on higher education to deliver education that is cost-effective, standardized, and accessible. Summer bridge programs have traditionally been one of the economical ways to increase the access and retention of non-traditional, first-generation, or at-risk students. Retention efforts like summer bridge programs often require the collaboration of administrators and basic writing instructors who each may possess a different set of values and priorities. This article examines how administrators, basic writing instructors, and students define a successful summer bridge experience and how varying definitions of success influence programmatic revision.

Realizing the benefits of network-centric warfare -- in terms of improved access to high-quality information, speed of command, and dominant application of forces -- will require a synergy among three dimensions of change: technology, force organization, and team processes. To achieve the potential advantages of new technological capabilities requires that the military reexamine old rules of business and force-structures and recast them in ways that allow for increased flexibility and application of force where and when it is required. Experiments and exercises designed to explore alternative structures, processes, and the impacts of information technologies are complex, precisely because they force change in all three dimensions. The challenge of assessing the impacts of these changes in terms of individual, team, and overall organizational performance, are great. This paper describes an approach to dealing with the complexity of assessment described above through the application of bridge experiments that start with a blend of modeling and experimentation in the laboratory -- to thoroughly explore core concepts and test new assessment ideas under controlled conditions -- and scale to meet the challenges of field-level performance assessment by emphasizing those issues that proved to be performance drivers in the laboratory.

Abstract Lithiation and subsequent reaction with CO2 was applied to calix[4]arenes with different, equal or mixed, ether functions at the lower-rim site as well as tert-butylated or non-tert-butylated upper-rim positions. Whereas this reaction fails for symmetric calix[4]arene ethers with alkoxy residues greater than methoxy, the carboxylation of mixed methoxy-propoxy calixarene ethers is possible. In connection with this, several new monobridge-substituted calix[4]arenes were characterized with respect to their conformational behaviour in solution and the X-ray crystal structure of one key intermediate is taken into consideration.

Critical analysis of the literacy narrative assignment within the context of the other genres in a basic writing course complicates understandings of the political import of the assignment. While several advocates of the literacy narrative have argued that it has the power of what Jean-François Lyotard has called petits récits, the authors argue that the relationship of the literacy narrative to other genres can also diminish the value of the literacy narrative and create what Lyotard has termed a "differend." While still arguing for the value of the literacy narrative, authors present a narrative about curricular reform that demonstrates how students can learn to recognize how this genre circulates within the power/knowledge of academic writing. This critical reading of the literacy narrative genre leads the authors to call for a reconceptualization of the assignment as a productive "conflict" that can be utilized to reshape the entire curriculum of the course while still cultivating the skills of argumentation and analysis outlined in the course outcomes.

In this policy brief, a summary of the longer report of the same title, the authors situate the critical issue of preparation for the workplace in the broader context of students' constitutional right to an education that provides the knowledge, skills, experiences, and dispositions that are the foundations to be a productive citizen. They tie the renewed concern among educators, policymakers, business leaders, and the public at large about preparing students for competitive employment with their growing interest in preparing students to be effective citizens capable of safeguarding democracy and stewarding the nation toward a greater realization of its democratic values. They propose some necessary reforms to improve students' access to existing New York's career and technical education pathways. They also argue, high quality career pathways, including "9-14" programs that bridge secondary and postsecondary education, serve students best if they are constructed on a strong foundation of basic educational opportunity for all.
