5Ukraine To Block Access To Russia's Social Media Sites

By

In another round of sanctions in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday ordered the blocking of access to Russia's most popular social media websites and search engines. Ukraine has blocked access to Russia's most popular social media websites and search engines.Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko ordered the ban in another round of sanctions in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea. The president's office published the decree that he signed on Monday, which freezes the assets and bans the operations of hundreds of Russian companies in Ukraine. It also calls for blocking access to dozens of Russia's most popular websites, including the search engine Yandex, social media network VKontakte and the email provider Mail.ru.Most of the internet and media companies banned by Ukraine are privately owned and have grown over the past decades from start-ups working out of a basement to major international businesses.More than 11 million Ukrainians use the services of the search engine Yandex. As of Tuesday afternoon, all of the websites were accessible. It's not immediately clear when and how the government will enforce the ban.For the AP I'm SH from the Rivet World Desk.

19ERIC ED318050: Media Access And The Radical Right: Public Access To "Race And Reason."

By

Tom Metzger and his white supremacist movement, the White Aryan Resistance, attempt to build support with working class whites and youth to create white working class solidarity and racial separation. Metzger uses videotapes as one of the methods of bringing his racist and conspiratorial message to his audience. One such vehicle is "Race and Reason," his long-running show (created specifically to be shown on public access cable channels) dedicated to the purity of the White race. Metzger claims that a conspiracy controls the media, that he is denied access to the media, and that access to the media equals control of the listeners. This "repression" then is used to justify the movement's small following, to solidify support, and to justify violence. In Kansas City (Missouri), an application to place "Race and Reason" on the public access channel was met with considerable and protracted controversy and back-and-forth maneuvering, both in and out of the courts. (Fourteen references are attached.) (SR)

Many people from across the region heard the call for reinforcements and have come to put their bodies on the line. Prayer circles were formed to prevent the Dakota Access Pipeline from being built underneath the Missouri River. Four people were arrested Friday morning as the group decided not to move from the entrance of the construction site: https://unicornriot.ninja/2016/fight-protect-land-water-intensifies-around-construction-dakota-access-pipeline/

21ERIC ED283168: Media Access To Pretrial Discovery Documents: Beyond Reach?

By

The press and public should have access to pretrial discovery documents in civil litigation when matters of public concern are at issue. Recently, the Supreme Court expanded the public's First Amendment right of access to criminal proceedings, and based on that, some lower courts have granted access to civil trials. In its decisions establishing public right of access to criminal court proceedings, the Supreme Court established that (1) the requested right of access must be rooted in judicial history, and (2) access must serve important public interests, particularly the opportunity for the public to assess how well the judicial system functions. Access to civil discovery documents meets both these criteria, and therefore the public and press should have a First Amendment right to examine such material. Courts refusing access to pretrial discovery documents have relied on the Supreme Court's opinion in "Seattle Times Co. v. Rhinehart.""Rhinehart" arose from an action for defamation and invasion of privacy filed by the head of a "spiritualist church." But "Rhinehart" is inapplicable to most cases in which access has been sought. Several courts have recognized that public interest demands access in certain cases, and this view should be adopted widely. Continued secrecy prevents the press and public from learning about matters which may affect them directly. (Six pages of footnotes are included.) (AEW)

By

The author examines the relationship between the military and the media since the early days of the Vietnam War and analyzes the factors contributing to the mistrust that grew between the armed forces and the press. The author focuses on the development of the 1992 Joint Doctrine for Public Affairs as a practical tool for reducing tension and providing press access to the battlefield. In the information age, media coverage of military operations will be an even more significant part of the strategic and operational equations. The author's analysis reflects the duality of the relationship and the efforts of both communities to find a practical compromise.

The title of this volume, "Learning Languages in the Digital Age," focuses on the integration of technology to promote authentic and interactive communication within and outside the walls of the language classroom. Major innovations have shifted Internet use from a consumer to a participatory model; that is, previously, Internet users were placed in the role of consumers who had access to materials and information (this phase of Internet integration is commonly referred to as Web 1.0). Now Internet users can become producers of resources themselves (Web 2.0 is a term used to describe this shift in Internet use from a consumer model to a participatory model). While traditional consumer and communication applications continue, widespread participation as producers of resources has jumped dramatically. Blogging, podcasting, Wikis, and other forms of democratized media are all examples of applications that promise to challenge traditional systems and roles and to enhance the nature of language teaching and learning. This shift from consumer to producer allows language learners to take a more active role in the learning process, participate in authentic communication and create products that can serve as authentic assessment of language production. This volume provides the theoretical foundation for effective language teaching and learning while providing practical applications for the language classroom. Each of the three sections represents an important aspect of language education designed to promote best practices and to increase student achievement: (1) Embracing Technology: Tools Teachers Can Use to Improve Language Learning; (2) Teacher Education and Professional Development: Agents of Change; and (3) Teaching Culture through Divergent Paths.

41How To Get Access To The NHL Playoffs With Jim Hughson Who Gave Complete Sports Media A Preview

By

Well this was a great day in the history of the Complete Sports media podcast.   We welcomed in Jim Hughson an icon in Canadian sports broadcasting.  He has been the lead play by play man for Hockey Night in Canada since 2009.  He has been the by play play voice for the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos. Jim is in the Hockey Hall of Fame for his broadcasting prowess and has won numerous other awards. We were able to connect with him just before he heads to Toronto to be the lead voice for the NHL playoffs. He will start by covering both the Toronto Vs Columbus and the Montreal vs Pittsburgh play in series.  This year with the Covid 19 Pandemic shutting down the league and canceling the rest of the regular season we are in unprecedented times.  With the NHL poised to resume with a 24 team playoff in two bubble cities in Toronto and Edmonton we are on the verge of a memorable summer of hockey!  We were able to look ahead a bit to the tournament and talk about the uniqueness and improvisation that Jim and his broadcast team will have to face.   We also spoke at length about Jim and his life. It was one of my favorite hours in my life and can't wait to share it with you.  Jim is going to go down as one of the best broadcasters to ever live and we were honoured to have him join us today!  I hope that you enjoy it half as much as I did.    Take Care,   All the best, Love yah, Bye for now
