We provide a comprehensive description and offer an explanation for the sizes of the faintest known galaxies in the universe, the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way and Andromeda. After compiling a consistent data set of half-light radii (r_{1/2}) and luminosities, we describe the size-luminosity relation of dSphs by a log-normal distribution in r_{1/2} with a mean size that varies as a function of luminosity. Accounting for modest number statistics, measurement uncertainties and surface brightness limitations, we find that the size-luminosity relations of the Milky Way and Andromeda dSph populations are statistically indistinguishable, and also very similar: their mean sizes at a given stellar luminosity differ by no more than 30%. In addition, we find that the mean size, slope and scatter of this log-normal size description of Local Group dSphs matches onto the relation of more massive low-concentration galaxies. This suggests that the stellar sizes of dSphs are ultimately related to their overall initial baryonic angular momentum. To test this hypothesis we perform a series of high resolution N-body simulations that we couple with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. These predict the same mean size and slope as observed in dSph satellites. At the same time, these models predict that the size-luminosity distributions for satellite galaxies around similar host-halos must be similar providing a natural explanation as to why the size distributions of Milky Way and Andromeda satellites are similar. Although strong rotation is currently not observed in dSphs, this may well be consistent with our angular-momentum-based explanation for their sizes if the disks of these galaxies have become sufficiently stirred through tidal interaction.

Research findings identifying the most effective class size are found to be inconclusive. Some studies have found small classes more effective, others have favored large classes, and some have found no differences in learning effectiveness due to class size. A number of these studies are cited and points of agreement noted. In a second section alternative organizational schemes are described that might be suitable for school systems faced with declining enrollments. (MLF)

This article is from International Journal of Obesity (2005) , volume 38 . Abstract As portion size has increased in the United States, greater concern has arisen regarding the positive relationship between portion size and consumption, and how this relationship may negatively impact weight management. This article is a summary of a roundtable discussion from the Forefronts in Portion Size Conference held in Philadelphia, PA, USA in May 2013. The roundtable included four discussants, five speakers who had presented research on various components of portion size at the conference, two organizers and the moderator. Topics discussed included methods to reduce portion size that can assist with reducing energy intake, societal norms about portion size, values associated with portion size and methods to promote smaller portion sizes. Areas needing additional research were also identified.

The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) < 10.3 or M_r > -19.5, where M_r is the r-band absolute magnitude, k-corrected to z = 0.1) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) > 11.4 or M_r < -21.4) are by dynamical mass. At fixed mass and luminosity, the sizes of low-mass galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 10.45 and M_r ~ -19.8) are relatively less sensitive to their colors, color gradients and axis ratios. On the other hand, the sizes of intermediate-mass (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 10.85 and M_r ~ -20.4) and high-mass (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 11.25 and M_r ~ -21.0) galaxies significantly depend on those parameters, in the sense that larger red early-type galaxies have bluer colors, more negative color gradients (bluer outskirts) and smaller axis ratios. These results indicate that the sizes of intermediate- and high-mass red early-type galaxies are significantly affected by their recent minor mergers or rotations, whereas the sizes of low-mass red early-type galaxies are affected by some other mechanisms. Major dry mergers also seem to have influenced on the size growth of high-mass red early-type galaxies.

This study examines what children learn about animals. The mental models that children reveal through their talk when they are faced with several different types of representations are reviewed. These representations are provided by robotic models in a museum, preserved animals in a museum, and preserved animals borrowed from a museum and presented in a school setting. The features of an animal, which are defining ones for a child, can be revealed by obtaining representations from the child of specimens that the child has viewed. These representations may be written descriptions, oral descriptions, drawings, or three-dimensional models. The museum study was conducted with groups of pupils on school visits to the Natural History Museum in London where the children's spontaneous conversations at preserved animal or robotic models were recorded. In the classroom study, preserved museum animals were taken to a school for individual children's responses to a series of pre-determined questions to be recorded. Overall, anatomical features were cited more often than behavioral or habitat features. Some pupils linked anatomical features to where the animals lived and to certain behaviors. In the classroom, pupils related their observations to their own previous experience such as seeing the animal in the woods, on the television, or in the zoo. The analyzed museum conversations suggest that children simply use their everyday knowledge and understanding to interpret what they see and to allocate everyday names using anatomical clues as their guide. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) seeks to provide practitioners information about "what works in education." One challenge in understanding "what works" is that effect sizes may not be comparable across studies, which limits the ability to compare the relative effectiveness of multiple interventions. One factor that consistently relates to the magnitude of effect sizes is the type of outcome measure. This paper uses WWC study data to examine differences in average effect sizes by outcome measure type. Controlling for other factors and using advanced meta-analysis, effect sizes found on researcher and developer measures are substantially larger on average than those found on independent measures not related to the intervention under study or the study authors. One implication of this finding is that the WWC should consider whether findings based on researcher and developer measures should be differentiated from those based on independent measures to meet the evidence needs of all WWC stakeholders.

Cloud development, the onset of precipitation and the effect of aerosol on clouds depend on the structure of the cloud profiles of droplet size and phase. Aircraft measurements of cloud profiles are limited in their temporal and spatial extent. Satellites were used to observe cloud tops not cloud profiles with vertical profiles of precipitation-sized droplets anticipated from Cloudsat. The recently proposed CLAIM-3D satellite mission (cloud aerosol interaction mission in 3D) suggests to measure profiles of cloud microphysical properties by retrieving them from the solar and infrared radiation reflected or emitted from cloud sides. Inversion of measurements from the cloud sides requires rigorous understanding of the 3-dimensional (3D) properties of clouds. Here we discuss the reflected sunlight from the cloud sides and top at two wavelengths: one nonabsorbing to solar radiation (0.67 micrometers) and one with liquid water efficient absorption of solar radiation (2.1 micrometers). In contrast to the plane-parallel approximation, a conventional approach to all current operational retrievals, 3D radiative transfer is used for interpreting the observed reflectances. General properties of the radiation reflected from the sides of an isolated cloud are discussed. As a proof of concept, the paper shows a few examples of radiation reflected from cloud fields generated by a simple stochastic cloud model with the prescribed vertically resolved microphysics. To retrieve the information about droplet sizes, we propose to use the probability density function of the droplet size distribution and its first two moments instead of the assumption about fixed values of the droplet effective radius. The retrieval algorithm is based on the Bayesian theorem that combines prior information about cloud structure and microphysics with radiative transfer calculations.

Magnitude of effect (ME) statistics are an important alternative to statistical significance. Why methodologists encourage the use of ME indices as interpretation aids is explained, and different types of ME statistics are discussed. The basic concepts underlying effect size measures are reviewed, and how to compute them from published reports even when results are incompletely reported is explained. Effect size measures are increasingly important, especially since the American Psychological Association publication manual explicitly suggests that they be reported. (Contains 25 references.) (SLD)
