2DTIC AD0715943: A Comparison Of Aircraft And Ground Vehicle Stopping Performance On Dry, Wet, Flooded, Slush-, Snow-, And Ice-Covered Runways

By

A study was made of the stopping performance of an instrumented C- 141A four-engine jet transport and several instrumented ground vehicles on 50 runways in the United States and Europe. It is shown that measurement of the stopping distance of a diagonal-braked ground vehicle provides a meaningful measure of the slipperiness of a wet runway, and permits accurate prediction of the stopping distance of an aircraft under varied runway slipperiness conditions as well as a means for realistic calculation of crosswind limitations. It is also shown that aircraft stopping performance on a wet runway can be considerably improved either by grooving the runway or by use of a porous surface course.

3Growth Laws And Self-similar Growth Regimes Of Coarsening Two-dimensional Foams: Transition From Dry To Wet Limits

By

We study the topology and geometry of two dimensional coarsening foams with arbitrary liquid fraction. To interpolate between the dry limit described by von Neumann's law, and the wet limit described by Marqusee equation, the relevant bubble characteristics are the Plateau border radius and a new variable, the e?ective number of sides. We propose an equation for the individual bubble growth rate as the weighted sum of the growth through bubble-bubble interfaces and through bubble-Plateau borders interfaces. The resulting prediction is successfully tested, without adjustable parameter, using extensive bidimensional Potts model simulations. Simulations also show that a selfsimilar growth regime is observed at any liquid fraction and determine how the average size growth exponent, side number distribution and relative size distribution interpolate between the extreme limits. Applications include concentrated emulsions, grains in polycrystals and other domains with coarsening driven by curvature.

5DTIC ADA584200: Photonic Crystal Fabrication In Lithium Nobate Via Pattern Transfer Through Wet And Dry Etched Chromium Mask

By

The need to fabricate photonic crystals from lithium niobate (LN) with accurate feature sizes is important to the development of optoelectronic devices. This paper reports a fabrication process to dry etch X-cut LN at a submicron scale using electron beam lithography and chromium as a hard mask. The chromium mask was used for both dry-etching and wet-etching in a unique method. Problems and solutions found during fabrication are presented. Arrays consisting of 400 nm diameter holes with a high aspect ratio were etched in LN, creating photonic crystals modeled to transmit light in the infrared spectrum.

16Evaluation Of Friction Stir Processing Of HY-80 Steel Under Wet And Dry Conditions

By

This thesis describes the microstructural and mechanical property changes associated with Friction Stir Processing (FSP) of HY-80 steel under dry and underwater conditions. HY-80 is a low-carbon alloy steel that is used in a quenched and tempered condition and is highly susceptible to hydrogen assisted cracking associated with conventional fusion welding. FSW/P (400 RPM/ 2 IPM) was conducted using a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride tool having a pin length of 6.35 mm. Two sets of processing runs were completed on HY-80 plates, 6.35 mm in thickness, one dry and the other under seawater. Analysis of the residual hydrogen content revealed little change in hydrogen content associated with FSW/P. Detailed microstructural characterization (optical and scanning electron microscopy) with emphasis on the differences in the distribution of constituent phases in the rolling, transverse and normal planes was carried out. Microstructural analysis of the “plan-view” section at the tool extraction sites of FSW/P samples was executed. Mechanical properties of these samples were evaluated by tensile, microhardness, and Charpy V-notch impact resistance tests. The results indicated that austenitization occurred within the stir zones and subsequent cooling influenced the final microstructure and properties. The thermomechanically affected zone displayed a gradual change in near-equiaxed austenitic grain size towards both the tool axis as well as the base plate with little grain shape change throughout. These results have been rationalized on the basis of expected temperature and deformation fields generated setup in these steel samples and the nature of phase transformations occurring in low carbon steels such as HY-80.

17DTIC AD0683348: PSYCHROMETRIC PROPERTIES OF HELIUM-WATER VAPOR MIXTURES: A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEMPERATURE, PRESSURE AND HUMIDITY, AND WET-AND DRY-BULB TEMPERATURES

By

With man's increasing interest in exploring the ocean at greater and greater depths, it was found necessary to replace the nitrogen of the normal atmosphere with helium to provide a breathing gas for those living at ambient ocean pressure. This led to a need for a knowledge of the psychrometric properties of helium at pressures up to several hundred pounds per square inch. This investigation has resulted in: (1) the development of psychrometer, (2) the development of a psychrometric equation for the helium-water vapor system, and (3) the development of a computer program which makes it possible to print out psychrometric charts for any ocean depth.

20Where Do Wet, Dry, And Mixed Galaxy Mergers Occur? A Study Of The Environments Of Close Galaxy Pairs In The DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey

By

We study the environment of wet, dry, and mixed galaxy mergers at 0.75 < z < 1.2 using close pairs in the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. We find that the typical environment of mixed and dry merger candidates is denser than that of wet mergers, mostly due to the color-density relation. While the galaxy companion rate (Nc) is observed to increase with overdensity, using N-body simulations we find that the fraction of pairs that will eventually merge decreases with the local density, predominantly because interlopers are more common in dense environments. After taking into account the merger probability of pairs as a function of local density, we find only marginal environment dependence of the fractional merger rate for wet mergers over the redshift range we have probed. On the other hand, the fractional dry merger rate increases rapidly with local density due to the increased population of red galaxies in dense environments. We also find that the environment distribution of K+A galaxies is similar to that of wet mergers alone and of wet+mixed mergers, suggesting a possible connection between K+A galaxies and wet and/or wet+mixed mergers. We conclude that, as early as z ~ 1, high-density regions are the preferred environment in which dry mergers occur, and that present-day red-sequence galaxies in overdense environments have, on average, undergone 1.2+-0.3 dry mergers since this time, accounting for (38+-10)% of their mass accretion in the last 8 billion years. Our findings suggest that dry mergers are crucial in the mass-assembly of massive red galaxies in dense environments, such as Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in galaxy groups and clusters.

22How Do The Work Environment And Work Safety Differ Between The Dry And Wet Kitchen Foodservice Facilities?

By

This article is from Nutrition Research and Practice , volume 6 . Abstract In order to create a worker-friendly environment for institutional foodservice, facilities operating with a dry kitchen system have been recommended. This study was designed to compare the work safety and work environment of foodservice between wet and dry kitchen systems. Data were obtained using questionnaires with a target group of 303 staff at 57 foodservice operations. Dry kitchen facilities were constructed after 2006, which had a higher construction cost and more finishing floors with anti-slip tiles, and in which employees more wore non-slip footwear than wet kitchen (76.7%). The kitchen temperature and muscular pain were the most frequently reported employees' discomfort factors in the two systems, and, in the wet kitchen, "noise of kitchen" was also frequently reported as a discomfort. Dietitian and employees rated the less slippery and slip related incidents in dry kitchens than those of wet kitchen. Fryer area, ware-washing area, and plate waste table were the slippery areas and the causes were different between the functional areas. The risk for current leakage was rated significantly higher in wet kitchens by dietitians. In addition, the ware-washing area was found to be where employees felt the highest risk of electrical shock. Muscular pain (72.2%), arthritis (39.1%), hard-of-hearing (46.6%) and psychological stress (47.0%) were experienced by employees more than once a month, particularly in the wet kitchen. In conclusion, the dry kitchen system was found to be more efficient for food and work safety because of its superior design and well managed practices.

23DTIC ADB005327: Effects Of Terrain On The Propagation Of Microseismic Waves And Implantation Characteristics Of Air-Delivered Sensors At Fort Huachuca, Arizona Wet- And Dry-Season Conditions

By

To obtain a quantitative basis for experiment design decisions regarding evaluation of seismic intrusion detector (SID) systems, test areas were selected and special seismic and environmental field experiments were conducted. This report discusses the selection of the SID test areas, their wet- and dry-terrain characteristics, and the procedures for collecting environmental data and conducting seismic response tests (i.e. man-walking, drop-hammer, M151 wheeled and M577 tracked vehicles, ambient and induced noises). Also presented are experimental detection distance data on the hand-emplaced miniaturized SID (MINISID), and experimental data on the depth of penetration and angle of impact of the air-delivered seismic intrusion detector/short (ADSID/S). This report also presents a theoretical system for modeling the quantitative effects of the terrain on SID detection performance and methods by which SID test results can be extrapolated from one site condition to another. This system has been implemented on the AEWES computer and involves: (1) Acquisition of terrain and seismic data for input to the model; (2) Exercising the model for each set of terrain factor data; and (3) Portraying the performance predictions for each set of terrain and seismic factor data.

24NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20170003749: Scale Dependence Of Land Atmosphere Interactions In Wet And Dry Regions As Simulated With NU-WRF Over The Southwestern And Southeast US

By

Large-scale forcing and land-atmosphere interactions on precipitation are investigated with NASA-Unified WRF (NU-WRF) simulations during fast transitions of ENSO phases from spring to early summer of 2010 and 2011. The model is found to capture major precipitation episodes in the 3-month simulations without resorting to nudging. However, the mean intensity of the simulated precipitation is underestimated by 46% and 57% compared with the observations in dry and wet regions in the southwestern and south-central United States, respectively. Sensitivity studies show that large-scale atmospheric forcing plays a major role in producing regional precipitation. A methodology to account for moisture contributions to individual precipitation events, as well as total precipitation, is presented under the same moisture budget framework. The analysis shows that the relative contributions of local evaporation and large-scale moisture convergence depend on the dry/wet regions and are a function of temporal and spatial scales. While the ratio of local and large-scale moisture contributions vary with domain size and weather system, evaporation provides a major moisture source in the dry region and during light rain events, which leads to greater sensitivity to soil moisture in the dry region and during light rain events. The feedback of land surface processes to large-scale forcing is well simulated, as indicated by changes in atmospheric circulation and moisture convergence. Overall, the results reveal an asymmetrical response of precipitation events to soil moisture, with higher sensitivity under dry than wet conditions. Drier soil moisture tends to suppress further existing below-normal precipitation conditions via a positive soil moisture-land surface flux feedback that could worsen drought conditions in the southwestern United States.

25NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900012574: Radiometric Tests On Wet And Dry Antenna Reflector Surface Panels

By

The results of X-band noise temperature tests on two types of antenna surface panels are presented. The first type tested was a solid antenna panel, while the second type was a perforated panel with 3/16-in.-diameter holes. Measurements were made at 8.45 GHz using an X-band radiometric system. Included in this article are measured noise temperature contributions from: (1) thermal diffusive white paint on solid and perforated panels, and (2) water sprayed on both painted and unpainted perforated panels. Experiments on perforated panels were restricted to the 3/16-in.-diameter hole panels formerly used on Deep Space Network 64-m antennas. Rigorous calibration equations, applicable to a variety of antenna panel and dichroic plate test configurations, are presented. It was demonstrated that an accurate, stable radiometric measurement system of the type used for the results of this research makes it possible to obtain information that would be much more difficult to obtain using other techniques.

35NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910018807: Effect Of Grinding On The Fatigue Life Of Titanium Alloy (5 Al-2.5 Sn) Under Dry And Wet Conditions

By

The principal factors in the performance of aerospace materials are strength-to-weight ratio, fatigue life, fracture toughness, survivability and, of course, reliability. Machining processes and, in particular, grinding under adverse conditions have been found to cause damage to surface integrity and affect the residual stress distribution in the surface and subsurface region. These effects have a direct bearing on the fatigue life. In this investigation the effects of grinding conditions on the fatigue life of Titanium 5 Al-2.5Sn were studied. This alloy is used in ground form in the manufacturing of some critical components in the space shuttle's main engine. It is essential that materials for such applications be properly characterized for use in severe service conditions. Flat sub-size specimens 0.1 inch thick were ground on a surface grinding machine equipped with a variable speed motor at speeds of 2000 to 6000 rpm using SiC wheels of grit sizes 60 and 120. The grinding parameters used in this investigation were chosen from a separate study. The ground specimens were then fatigued at a selected stress and the resulting lives were compared with that of the virgin material. The surfaces of the specimens were examined under a scanning electron microscope, and the roughness and hardness were measured using a standard profilometer and microhardness tester, respectively. The fatigue life of the ground specimens was found to decrease with the increase in speed for both dry and wet conditions. The fatigue life of specimens ground under wet conditions showed a significant increase at the wheel speed of 2000 rpm for both the grit sizes and thereafter decreased with increase profilometry, microhardness measurements and scanning electron microscopic examination.

38NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19800003834: Behavior Of Aircraft Antiskid Braking Systems On Dry And Wet Runway Surfaces. A Slip-velocity-controlled, Pressure-bias-modulated System

By

The braking and cornering response of a slip velocity controlled, pressure bias modulated aircraft antiskid braking system is investigated. The investigation, conducted on dry and wet runway surfaces, utilized one main gear wheel, brake, and tire assembly of a McDonnell Douglas DC 9 series 10 airplane. The landing gear strut was replaced by a dynamometer. The parameters, which were varied, included the carriage speed, tire loading, yaw angle, tire tread condition, brake system operating pressure, and runway wetness conditions. The effects of each of these parameters on the behavior of the skid control system is presented. Comparisons between data obtained with the skid control system and data obtained from single cycle braking tests without antiskid protection are examined.

43DTIC AD0472539: CRATERING CHARACTERISTICS OF WET AND DRY SAND

By

Thirty-seven 1-lb spheres of TNT were individually exploded at various depths of burst in a sand test pad. Of these, 19 detonations were conducted in a dry sand-medium and 18 in a wet-sand medium at comparable depths of burst. The craters produced were accurately surveyed by using a bridge and probe assembly. The result of these crater surveys are shown on topographic maps. In addition to topographic measurements, volumetric measurements of the craters, ejecta measurements, and medium density, moisture content, grain size distributions are presented. The experimental procedures, equipment test area, and sand medium are discussed in detail. The comparison of crater characteristics of wet- and dry-sand environments are discussed and the results presented in tables and graphs. In addition to the crater characteristics, the formation of intracone structures, shock-agglutinated missiles, and the reduction in size of the sand grains composing the medium are discussed.

45DTIC ADA303241: Evaluating The Effects Of The Wet And Dry Processes For Including Crumb Rubber Modifier In Hot Mix Asphalt.

By

The conventional method of modifying an asphalt cement (AC) with Crumb Rubber Modifier (CRM) is to blend and 'react' ground CRM particles (16 mesh and finer) in the AC, prior to mixing with the aggregate to produce hot mix asphalt (HMA). This is known as the 'wet process.' The 'dry process', where CRM is added directly to the aggregate, has historically used larger granulated CRM particles with an objective of 'rubberizing the aggregate.' Recently, a few states have successfully tried a new concept of adding exclusively minus 80 mesh CRM directly to the aggregate. This in effect combines the dry process method with the wet process objective of modifying the AC. Adding the same CRM 'dry' versus 'wet' substantially lessens modification costs, but most feel the CRM 'reaction' is very limited. The primary objective of this study was to compare the performance effects of adding the same ground CRM to HMA by the wet versus the dry process. Secondary objectives were to: (1) use the SUPERPAVE binder tests to determine the effects of ground CRM in both a reacted and unreacted state and (2) determine how the gradation of ground CRM affects binder and mix properties in both processes. (MM)

46DTIC ADB155185: Task 89-06: Determination Of The Bioequivalence Of HI-6 And Atropine When Delivered By Wet/Dry Autoinjector Or Syringe In Sheep: A Pharmacokinetic And Efficacy Evaluation

By

A study was instituted in sheep to compare efficacy against Soman and the pharmacokinetics of atropine and HI-6 by wet/dry autoinjector and by syringe. The efficacy in sheep against Soman of Atropine/HI-6 delivered by wet/ dry autoinjector was also compared to the efficacy of atropine/pralidoxime chloride when syringe. The aging rate of GD was also determined in sheep erytrocytes. There were no statistical differences in the LD50's of sheep treated with atropine/HI-6 using syringes of wet/dry autoinjectors. A PR was determined for atropine/HI-6 treatment. Based on analyses of HI-6 and atropine pharmacokinetic parameters there were no statistically significant differences in the two injection techniques. The aging rate of sheep RBC's is highly dependent upon the GD-AChE incubation temperature.

47Comparative Study Of Mass Transfer In Wet And Dry Osmotic Dehydration

The differences in the external osmotic medium, dry or dissolved osmotic agent and its concentration (constant or variable) can significantly influence the kinetics of mass transfer. The objective of this work was to compare water and solute transport during the osmotic dehydration of strawberry pieces under different external conditions, wet or dry osmotic agent, with varying  types of sugar (sucrose, fructose and isomaltulose). The evolution of the liquid phase concentration as well as the net fluxes under the different scenarios was described and modelled. Results showed that mass transfer kinetics were higher when the concentration of the external medium was variable, in the wet process slightly superior than in the dry process.

Back in the day before automobiles, a good horse trainer and veterinarian was the equivalent of “Mr Goodwrench”. A badly behaving or unhealthy equine was equivalent to breaking down on the highway or running out of gas on a lonely stretch of highway somewhere in Utah. My sources tell me that most of the training methods are ok, but stay away from the medical tips unless you are prepared to become the poster boy or girl for the local SPCA. Listen with tongue in cheek, and check with a professional before attempting any of these techniques on a real animal.<br /> (Mike Vendetti, narrator)
