One purpose of this research is to develop models of cognitive processes in understanding mechanical systems. A particular focus was on the processes in mentally animating the representation of a mechanical system, and the contribution of animation graphics in comprehension. Several studies, involving eye fixations, verbal protocols, and process tracing, indicated that mental animation was difficult for individuals who were not knowledgeable about mechanics. Animation did help them determine the motion of individual components, but animation alone did not entirely compensate for the subject's difficulty in identifying relevant features and ignoring irrelevant features. These subjects included college students, professional mechanics, and high school graduates applying for positions as firemen or policemen in New York City. A second goal of the research was to analyze the differences among individuals who are performing analytic reasoning tasks. The cognitive processes in a widely used, nonverbal test of analytic intelligence, the Raven Progressive Matrices Test, were analyzed using experimental and modelling techniques. Two processes that were found to distinguish average and superior performance are the ability to induce abstract relations and the ability to dynamically manage a large set of problem solving goals in working memory. This paper examines the mathematical conversations of middle school students as they use computer-mediated graphic representations to construct a shared understanding of the basic concepts of probability under two conditions. The first condition used graphical representations to depict important abstract relationships visually, and the second condition used animation to augment the graphic representations to see if animation helped students grasp abstract relationships. Thirteen pairs of students (11 boys and 15 girls) divided themselves into the two condition groups. The analysis of student think-aloud protocols focused on how the visual and dynamic elements of the computer-based graphical representation influenced students' interpretations of the mathematical concepts. Data suggest that students with access to animated representation had qualitatively different mathematical discussions than those who had only the static representation. The conversations of students who used animated representations used a narrative structure and were richer than those of the students who used static representations. A series of studies is presented using algorithm animation to teach computer algorithms. These studies are organized into three components: eliciting students' preferences, developing algorithm animation guidelines, and evaluating the effects of using algorithm animation in the classroom. Many systems for creating computer animations have been designed. These systems reflect the designers' confidence that visual representation is a valuable technique for conveying conceptual knowledge. Little formal experimentation has been carried out to determine whether such animations are beneficial in teaching the algorithms presented. Also, formal guidelines have not been developed for either design or use of these animations. This work addresses both concerns. Student preference for animation does not predict student performance on a post- test to measure learning. Several types of labeling (data, steps, actions) were examined and a variety of effects were found. One of these effects was that a text description of the algorithm increased accuracy on conceptual questions. Also, students are more accurate on a post-test if they are allowed to design their own data sets than if they use experimenter-defined data sets. Finally, use of the animations was evaluated in a classroom-type setting. All students were given a lecture on an algorithm. Adding a laboratory in which the subject controlled the animation and data sets led to more accurate performance than a lecture only or than a lecture with experimenter-preprepared data sets. This work has implications for the design and use of animated algorithms in teaching computer algorithms and for the design of laboratory experiences for beginning computer science courses.

Richard Hardy, a member of the British gentry, tries to resolve problems in his marriage as he travels with a psychiatrist. The book is to a great extent autobiographical. H. G. had read some brilliantly composed articles by a writer who wrote under the name Rebecca West. In one piece she called H. G. "pseudo-scientific." He contacted her and asked what she meant. When they met for lunch, it was the beginning of a very intense and volatile relationship. Soon she was pregnant, so he divided his time between her and his wife Jane with their two sons. After World War I, Rebecca became more demanding. She wanted him to divorce Jane. Finally, in 1923 Wells told Rebecca she should either get serious about her writing or break off their relationship. The criticism stung her. After a speaking tour in the U.S., she returned newly independent, and the two went their separate ways. In this novel H. Interestingly, in a fictitious confrontation Britain declares war on Germany. Willie falls in love with Nettie, but when she elopes with an upper-class man, Willie resolves to kill them both. Throughout the novel there is present in the sky a large comet which gives off a green glow. As Willie prepares to shoot the lovers, two battleships appear and begin shelling the coast, causing Willie to nearly lose his targets. As the comet enters the atmosphere, it gives off a green gas which envelopes everyone including Willie, who falls asleep. Willie wakes up a changed man. He is able to reason so clearly that he realizes the foolishness of his plan for revenge. Other people have changed too. The Discovery of the Future is a 1902 philosophical lecture by H. G. Wells that argues for the knowability of the future. It was originally delivered to the Royal Institution on January 24, 1902. Wells begins by distinguishing between "two divergent types of mind," one that judges and attaches importance principally to what has happened in the past and one that judges and attaches importance principally to what will happen in the future. To the former he attributes the adjectives "legal or submissive," "passive," and "oriental," and to the latter the adjectives "legislative, creative, organizing, or masterful," and "active," calling it "a more modern and much less abundant type of mind."... Confessing himself to be among "those who believe entirely in the forces behind the individual" rather than in individuals themselves as determining causes, Wells argues that there is "no reason why we should not aspire to, and discover and use, safe and serviceable, generalizations upon countless issues in the human destiny." Wells devotes the last part of his text to speculations about "the question what is to come after man," considering it "the most persistently fascinating and the most insoluble question in the whole world."
