2ERIC EJ1073826: Introducing Laptops To Children: An Examination Of Ubiquitous Computing In Grade 3 Reading, Language, And Mathematics

By

This study examines the achievement outcomes accompanying the implementation of a Grade 3 laptop or so-called "ubiquitous computing" program in a Quebec school district. CAT3 reading, language, and mathematics batteries were administered at the end of Grade 2 and again at the end of Grade 3, after the first year of computer implementation. Overall gain was found in all three content areas, but was differential when compared with the norms of the CAT3. Additionally, some evidence suggested a differential gain for lower and middle-level learners during the school year. Teachers were administered an instrument called the "Technology Implementation Questionnaire" (TIQ) that assessed the purposes and extent of technology integration. Negative correlations were found in reading achievement gain for items associated with the higher use of communicative, evaluative, and creative uses of computers. Open-ended teacher responses indicated the need for more professional support for instructional implementations of computing.

5DTIC ADA456812: Scaling Task Management In Space And Time: Reducing User Overhead In Ubiquitous-Computing Environments

By

Advances in computing and networking are prompting users to change their expectations about the availability of computing. Instead of making primary use of a single machine, users may expand their computer-supported tasks across multiple locations, and they may work on some tasks for days or even months. It is well known that such tasks typically involve several applications and information resources, making it a chore to rebuild the state of devices and software for resuming a task interrupted somewhere else or sometime ago. Unfortunately, current systems offer little support for scaling task management in space and in time, and consequently users are torn between taking advantage of increasingly pervasive computing systems, and the price (in attention and skill) that they have to pay for using them. This dissertation describes a new approach to the scalability of task management in space, across heterogeneous environments, and in time, allowing users to recover tasks interrupted long ago. The approach is based on high-level models of what users need from the computing environment for each of their tasks. Such models are exploited at run-time by an infrastructure that automatically configures the computing environment, on demand, on behalf of users. The author presents an architectural framework that grounds his approach, and that embodies new system design principles that hold independently of the particular infrastructure implementing the framework. As part of the framework, he presents a utility-theoretic model that enables finding the best match between user needs and the capabilities and resources in the environment. He evaluates his research from three perspectives: from the user's perspective, from the software architect's perspective, and from a systems perspective.

8Microsoft Research Audio 104027: Ubiquitous Context-Aware Computing: Experience And Emerging Challenges

By

Standing at the crossroads of the ActiveCampus Project and the Campus of the Future Project, it is appropriate to pause and consider what we've learned, and what that foretells. I will argue that a new feature of developing everyday software is 'failure as a normal mode of operation', and that this implies a need for advances in both software development techniques and application design methods. Key lessons will be drawn from several of the projects that I've conducted over the last five years. ©2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

9ERIC ED433766: Assessment Of The Impact Of Ubiquitous Computing. AIR 1999 Annual Forum Paper.

By

This paper describes implementation of one private university's strategic plan which includes provision of laptop computers to all entering freshmen and faculty since fall 1996. The background and context of the development of this plan is summarized, as are the 10 assessment instruments, both standard and in-house, being used to measure the effectiveness of the entire plan. The computing component has involved hiring of 17 academic computer specialists to provide faculty support, revamping the school's Information Systems Support Center, and establishment by faculty of a special initiative to develop effective uses of computers in instruction. Preliminary evaluation findings indicate: significantly higher usage of computers by students, significantly higher computer skills among faculty, and improved attitudes toward computers. Among academic outcomes, there is evidence that the computing initiative has had a positive impact with the retention rate of first-year students higher than in the past. However, in non-computer areas, there was some evidence that the initiative might have impacted students so that they may be less rounded than previous students. (Contains 11 references.) (DB)

14Security-related Research In Ubiquitous Computing -- Results Of A Systematic Literature Review

By

In an endeavor to reach the vision of ubiquitous computing where users are able to use pervasive services without spatial and temporal constraints, we are witnessing a fast growing number of mobile and sensor-enhanced devices becoming available. However, in order to take full advantage of the numerous benefits offered by novel mobile devices and services, we must address the related security issues. In this paper, we present results of a systematic literature review (SLR) on security-related topics in ubiquitous computing environments. In our study, we found 5165 scientific contributions published between 2003 and 2015. We applied a systematic procedure to identify the threats, vulnerabilities, attacks, as well as corresponding defense mechanisms that are discussed in those publications. While this paper mainly discusses the results of our study, the corresponding SLR protocol which provides all details of the SLR is also publicly available for download.

20Microsoft Research Audio 104321: Exiting The Cleanroom: On Ecological Validity And Ubiquitous Computing

By

Over the past decade and a half, considerable time and money has been invested in the realization of ubiquitous computing. Yet iterative design is still difficult and rare, which limits the speed with which the field can move forward. Based on the literature and interviews with 28 developers, we show how issues of sensing and scale cause ubicomp systems to resist iteration, prototype creation, and ecologically valid evaluation. Our work has focused in particular on a tool for enabling qualitative techniques for need finding and early stage design and testing. We present our work on the Momento tool, and discuss a series of studies that was conducted using Momento including a diary study, a field study of an early prototype desktop/mobile application, and a field study of a Wizard-of-Oz mobile prototype. ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. 23ERIC EJ697372: Ubiquitous Computing--Are We Crazy? Point/Counterpoint

By

The push for ubiquitous computing (UC) relies on an understandable and well-intentioned belief that teaching and schooling need to be transformed. This view appears credible based on large-scale criteria, such as test scores relative to other countries, drop-out rates, and economic changes. And the use of technology to achieve this goal is attractive, given the dramatic advances that have recently taken place. But the history of our schools tells us that reform that ignores teachers' views doesn't work. Teachers need to buy in if sustainable change is going to happen in classrooms. Veteran teachers often initiate rookies by telling them to ignore the newest educational fad because whatever they are already doing will come back in fashion soon enough.

24ERIC EJ876862: Implications Of Ubiquitous Computing For The Social Studies Curriculum

By

In March 2002, members of the National Technology Leadership Initiative (NTLI) met in Charlottesville, Virginia to discuss the potential effects of ubiquitous computing on the field of education. Ubiquitous computing, or "on-demand availability of task-necessary computing power," involves providing every student with a handheld computer--a situation with enormous repercussions for education and teacher education. Over a two-day period, participants engaged in intensive discussion of the issue of ubiquitous computing and developed seven conclusions. This paper, written by the representatives from social studies organizations, seeks to examine the specific implications of these seven conclusions for the field of social studies education. The paper discusses the concept of ubiquitous computing and the impact this technology shift may have on social studies curricula, teacher preparation, software development, and research agendas.

26Ubiquitous Computing: Big Brother's All-Seeing Eye - Part 1

By

An "Everyware" world, as Adam Greenfield calls it, is a world in which computers are embedded and merged seamlessly everywhere in the environment. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags communicate their position and other information constantly in a vast network. Everyday objects become "searchable" as if they were part of the interconnected world wide web. In this interconnected internet of things, scientific management and surveillance of people and the environment we inhabit becomes possible, and marketers' ultimate dreams come true. 29A Calculus Of Mobility And Communication For Ubiquitous Computing

By

We propose a Calculus of Mobility and Communication (CMC) for the modelling of mobility, communication and context-awareness in the setting of ubiquitous computing. CMC is an ambient calculus with the in and out capabilities of Cardelli and Gordon's Mobile Ambients. The calculus has a new form of global communication similar to that in Milner's CCS. In CMC an ambient is tagged with a set of ports that agents executing inside the ambient are allowed to communicate on. It also has a new context-awareness feature that allows ambients to query their location. We present reduction semantics and labelled transition system semantics of CMC and prove that the semantics coincide. A new notion of behavioural equivalence is given by defining capability barbed bisimulation and congruence which is proved to coincide with barbed bisimulation congruence. The expressiveness of the calculus is illustrated by two case studies.

We present our work on the Momento tool, and discuss a series of studies that was conducted using Momento including a diary study, a field study of an early prototype desktop/mobile application, and a field study of a Wizard-of-Oz mobile prototype. ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. Over the past decade and a half, considerable time and money has been invested in the realization of ubiquitous computing. Yet iterative design is still difficult and rare, which limits the speed with which the field can move forward.

43Ubiquitous Computing

By

In an age when computing and communications is happening on anything and everything imaginable, Matt and Michael reached out to Paul Grizaffi of Magenic to discuss the proliferation of the Internet of Things as well as the convergence of so many devices that used to be discrete components requiring space, attention and connections that had to be closely monitored. With the Internet of Things and, more to the point, the spread of Ubiquitous Computing that goes even beyond the Internet of Things, we chatted and geeked-out on some developments in tech that have changed our everyday realities (we went on a tangent on how these technologies are filtering into musical instruments). 45DTIC ADA440112: Solar: Towards A Flexible And Scalable Data-Fusion Infrastructure For Ubiquitous Computing

By

As we embed more computers into our daily environment, ubiquitous computing promises to make them less noticeable and to avoid information overload. We see, however, few ubiquitous applications that are able to adapt to the dynamics of user, physical, and computational context. The challenge is to allow applications flexible access to these sources, and yet scale to thousands of devices and sensors. In this paper we introduce our proposed infrastructure, SOLAR. In SOLAR, information sources produce events. Applications may subscribe to interesting sources directly, or they may instantiate and subscribe to a tree of operators that filter, transform, merge and aggregate events. Applications use a subscription language to describe the tree, based on event streams registered in a context-sensitive naming hierarchy. SOLAR is flexible: modular operators can be composed to produce new event streams. SOLAR is scalable: it distributes operators across host called Planets, and it re-uses common subgraphs in the operator network.

47DTIC ADA410383: Feasibility And User Acceptance Of A Personal Weight Management System Based On Ubiquitous Computing

By

With the fast development of information and communications technology, devices with some computing power are becoming increasingly abundant in the average home, The trend for these devices to also be provided with intercommunication functionality opens up new possibilities for health care, The availability of ubiquitous computing allows the individual to perform health-related measurements, review data or consult guidelines independent of place or time, thus providing the individual with a better means to follow certain treatment programs In this study, we set out to implement a system based on ubiquitous computing for the application of weight management using behavioral feedback, The goals were a) to gain insights in the technical feasibility and caveats of such a system as a basis for setting up more advanced and generic infrastructures, and b) to study the degree to whether people are actually willing to use such a technology-laden system for their health management The results lead us to the conclusion that such a system is possible with the current technology, although many issues need to be solved before generic architectures and implementations are a reality, and that many people, especially those who have serious weight problems, are eager to use such a system.

50ERIC EJ873677: After Installation: Ubiquitous Computing And High School Science In Three Experienced, High-Technology Schools

By

There are few studies of the impact of ubiquitous computing on high school science, and the majority of studies of ubiquitous computing report only on the early stages of implementation. The present study presents data on 3 high schools with carefully elaborated ubiquitous computing systems that have gone through at least one "obsolescence cycle" and are therefore several years past first implementation. The data from these schools shows how the elements of a 1:1, wireless environment are being deployed in these science classrooms, and the effects of the environment on science content, data analysis, labs and other uses for visualizations, and classroom interaction. While some positive effects are clearly seen in these classrooms, five years or more into the innovation, problems remain, and school cultural factors seem to play an important role in teacher uptake and integration of the technology. Implications for teacher learning are discussed. (Contains 13 figures and 3 tables.)
