Student transfer processes from the California Community Colleges (CCC) to the California State University (CSU) have been simplified somewhat over the past few years, but they remain complex and confusing for most transfer students, according to students, administrators, and staff at several community colleges and CSU campuses. Transfer processes--from planning and course-taking at a community college to applying to and enrolling at a CSU campus--remain burdensome for students, despite the services provided by institutions and the implementation of the new associate degree for transfer (AD-T). Many transfer students, to make it through, employ strategies that were described to us as trial and error. College administrators, staff, and students said that students need more help interpreting transfer requirements. These findings are based on research by the Education Insights Center (EdInsights) examining policies and practices in California that support student transfer from the community colleges to the CSU. Previous research has documented the complexity of transfer processes in California. In 2010, the state enacted the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act to streamline transfer from the community colleges to the CSU by creating a new degree, the AD-T. This research examined how students experience policies and practices related to transfer from community colleges to CSU in the context of the AD-T, which was implemented in 2012. Findings are drawn from interviews with 26 administrators and staff at six community colleges and four CSU campuses, and from focus groups at the four CSU campuses with 64 students who had successfully transferred from a community college. The following are appended: (1) Research Methodology; (2) Comparison of Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and CSU GE-Breadth Requirements; and (3) Comparing Transfer Requirements for Business Administration Majors at Two CSU Campuses. A sequence of studies compared two types of discrimination formation: errorless learning and trial-and-error procedures. The subjects were three boys and five girls from a university preschool. The children performed the experimental tasks at a typical match-to-sample apparatus with one sample window above and four match (response) windows below. Each of the children performed eight tasks, each involving a fifty-two slide presentation in eight different sessions. The errorless and trial-and-error tasks were alternated. The task slides were pictures of geometric figures that were rotated at different angles from the sample orientation of 0 degrees. Results revealed that the design of the tasks was insufficient for the purposes of the experiment. No errorless learning occurred, because criterion discrimination was too difficult. Subsequent experimentation with adults indicated that the tasks were too similar to permit the desired comparisons. (MH)

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Vicarious trial-and-error (VTE) is a behavior observed in rat experiments that seems to suggest self-conflict. This behavior is seen mainly when the rats are uncertain about making a decision. The presence of VTE is regarded as an indicator of a deliberative decision-making process, that is, searching, predicting, and evaluating outcomes. This process is slower than automated decision-making processes, such as reflex or habituation, but it allows for flexible and ongoing control of behavior. In this study, we propose for the first time a robotic model of VTE to see if VTE can emerge just from a body-environment interaction and to show the underlying mechanism responsible for the observation of VTE and the advantages provided by it. We tried several robots with different parameters, and we have found that they showed three different types of VTE: high numbers of VTE at the beginning of learning, decreasing numbers afterward (similar VTE pattern to experiments with rats), low during the whole learning period, and high numbers all the time. Therefore, we were able to reproduce the phenomenon of VTE in a model robot using only a simple dynamical neural network with Hebbian learning, which suggests that VTE is an emergent property of a plastic and embodied neural network. From a comparison of the three types of VTE, we demonstrated that 1) VTE is associated with chaotic activity of neurons in our model and 2) VTE-showing robots were robust to environmental perturbations. We suggest that the instability of neuronal activity found in VTE allows ongoing learning to rebuild its strategy continuously, which creates robust behavior. Based on these results, we suggest that VTE is caused by a similar mechanism in biology and leads to robust decision making in an analogous way.

In this paper, we address the problem of global transmit power minimization in a self-congiguring network where radio devices are subject to operate at a minimum signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) level. We model the network as a parallel Gaussian interference channel and we introduce a fully decentralized algorithm (based on trial and error) able to statistically achieve a congiguration where the performance demands are met. Contrary to existing solutions, our algorithm requires only local information and can learn stable and efficient working points by using only one bit feedback. We model the network under two different game theoretical frameworks: normal form and satisfaction form. We show that the converging points correspond to equilibrium points, namely Nash and satisfaction equilibrium. Similarly, we provide sufficient conditions for the algorithm to converge in both formulations. Moreover, we provide analytical results to estimate the algorithm's performance, as a function of the network parameters. During the late thirteenth century and early fourteenth century, the English in medieval Europe fought in two wars: the Scottish Wars of Independence followed by the Hundred Years War. The final engagements of the Scottish Wars of Independence mentally, culturally, and physically changed English notions of what tactics and strategies should be used in warfare. From these experiences, the English learned lessons from Scottish methods of war that helped them devise a tactical fighting system that would eventually transform the ideals of chivalry and its application in warfare. The English then employed their new tactical fighting system decisively against the French during the Hundred Years War. During the early stages of the Hundred Years War, the French in turn learned hard lessons fighting against the English and attempted to adjust their tactics to counter the new English fighting system. This paper explores what techniques were learned by the English from the Scots, and how the English then modeled and improved on Scottish tactics to defeat the Scots then employ them against the French.

Fifty years of planning in the Georgia statewide system of public higher education is reviewed. Based on planning completed by survey experts in 1933 and a 1940 re-study of conditions in the university system, recurrent themes were identified including the following: the geographic distribution of institutions and programs, the role of general education, and the preparation of public school teachers. A 1949 report that addressed these recurrent themes as well as institutional functions, postwar adjustments, and future financing, is discussed. Attention is also directed to: planning as ad hoc problem solving, a study of the state's need for nurses and other paramedical personnel, statewide planning in the 1960s, the Governor's Commission to Improve Education, the Regents Study of Community Colleges, a study of the appropriate role of each institution within the university system and the appropriate scope of its activities, the Governor's Committee on Postsecondary Education, the Second Governor's Committee, studies to assess progress being made toward state-level goals and objectives in postsecondary education, a study committee on finance, and the Regents Needs Assessment Study. This study investigates how humans learn to adapt their actions to changes in environmental conditions. We will use physical reasoning in simulated altered gravity as a model system to understand adaptability. To that end, we will test adult participants in a virtual physical reasoning and trial-and-error learning task while altering vestibular-gravitational signaling in controlled lab-setting.
