The individual chapters address synergies and intersections between comics and videogames via a diverse set of case studies ranging from independent and experimental projects via popular franchises from the corporate worlds of DC and Marvel to the more playful forms of media mix prominent in Japan. Leaders of the CPB-PBS "Ready To Learn" Initiative understand the important role parents and caregivers play in ensuring young children's healthy development and academic learning. In order for young children, especially those living in traditionally underserved communities, to succeed at school and thrive outside of the classroom, educational involvement by the adults who care for them is essential. Therefore, like other respected public media programs that seek to support and educate families and their young children, "Ready To Learn" has made parents and home experiences an integral part of its work from the very beginning. The research reported in the Parents and Caregivers Study (Parents Study) builds on work that Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), and SRI International (SRI) began in Year 1 of the Ready To Learn Initiative through the Context Studies and have continued through Year 2 with the Preschool Pilot Study of PBS KIDS Transmedia Mathematics Content, infusing technology and transmedia into early childhood classrooms. The purpose of the Parents Study, especially when paired with the Context Study of the Use of Technology and PBS KIDS Transmedia in the Home Environment, is to make sense of what we are learning about transmedia in the classroom by considering and exploring connections to technology and media use at home. As the researchers discuss in detail, respondents to their parent survey and their focus group participants provided insight into and explanation of technology and media use in homes with young children. In particular, they learned that parents associate technology--and some devices more than others--with potential for learning. Researchers also discovered the varied and sometimes conflicting roles parents play when monitoring, limiting, or supporting technology use at home. Likewise, they attempted to uncover what it means for parents to find an experience with technology beneficial for learning and how they decide which activities are best for learning. These findings are only the beginning in understanding the truly complex and dynamic experience of families using technology and media at home, and how that use relates to in-school learning experiences. Characters are a vital aspect of today’s transmedia practices. Combining theories on fictional persons from Japanese and Euro-American practices, this book discusses video game characters embedded in our popular media culture in which they are constantly produced and re-imagined. This book introduces the dynamic game character, a type of game character with a development structure that consists of multiple outcomes in a game. Through their actions and choices, players can influence these game characters’ identities and affect their possible destinies. Games subvert the idea that fictional persons must maintain a coherent identity. This book shows that dynamic game characters challenge strategies of top-down control through close readings of the Mass Effect series, Persona 5, Hades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and more. It is directed to all scholars interested in the topics of transmedia storytelling, video games, characters, and Japanese narratology.

This paper describes the theoretical foundation for a work in progress project of developing a mobile learning solution for sloyd education named Talking Tools (TT). Being a learner in a multimodal, blended learning environment entails both consuming and creating own content using a number of media sources and tools. For sloyd education, this multimodal learning experience can be seen as transmedia storybuilding, in which dynamic content facilitates learning by multiple and flexible stimulations. The learning process is the learners' own stories created through their transmedia learning experiences. We will look at the learning process of learners using the mobile learning solution from of a socio-cultural perspective of appropriating tools for learning. An exploration of social movement media practices in an increasingly complex media ecology, through richly detailed cases of immigrant rights activism. For decades, social movements have vied for attention from the mainstream mass media—newspapers, radio, and television. Today, many argue that social media power social movements, from the Egyptian revolution to Occupy Wall Street. Yet, as Sasha Costanza-Chock reports, community organizers know that social media enhance, rather than replace, face-to-face organizing. The revolution will be tweeted, but tweets alone do not the revolution make. In Out of the Shadows, Into the Streets! Costanza-Chock traces a much broader social movement media ecology. Through a richly detailed account of daily media practices in the immigrant rights movement, the book argues that there is a new paradigm of social movement media making: transmedia organizing. Despite the current spotlight on digital media, Costanza-Chock finds, social movement media practices tend to be cross-platform, participatory, and linked to action. Immigrant rights organizers leverage social media creatively, even as they create media ranging from posters and street theater to Spanish-language radio, print, and television. Drawing on extensive interviews, workshops, and media organizing projects, Costanza-Chock presents case studies of transmedia organizing in the immigrant rights movement over the last decade. Chapters focus on the historic mass protests against the anti-immigrant Sensenbrenner Bill; coverage of police brutality against peaceful activists; efforts to widen access to digital media tools and skills for low-wage immigrant workers; paths to participation in DREAM activism; and the implications of professionalism for transmedia organizing. These cases show us how savvy transmedia organizers work to strengthen movement identity, win political and economic victories, and transform public consciousness forever.

How the blurring of media forms - transmedia - became the default for how we experience narratives, and how that cultural transformation has redefined the worlds of education, entertainment, and our increasingly polarized public discourse. Over the past decade, the power of narrative has been unleashed with awesome and terrifying consequences, and it has been consumed in its blurred media forms by millions of people as news, entertainment, and education. Imagining Transmedia, edited by Ed Finn, Bob Beard, Joey Eschrich, and Ruth Wylie, explores the surprising ways that narratives working across media forms became the default grammar for both media consumption and personal expression and how multiplatform storytelling creates new media literacies and modes of civil discourse. Understanding this shift reveals transmedia as an essential building block of media literacy today. Transmedia is how we create, interpret, and participate in our increasingly mediated society. It extends beyond popular culture into professional and public spheres while, at the same time, it fuels the misinformation and polarization that have contributed to America's fraying civic discourse. Reaching beyond traditional academic analyses, this probing collection of essays and conversations features transmedia practitioners sharing their experiences and inviting readers to imagine the types of multimodal stories and experiences they might create. Prioritizing conversation over a single unified theory, each section of this volume pairs thematically linked essays from international contributors with a dialogue between authors to create an accessible, practical synthesis of ideas.

The CPB-PBS Ready To Learn initiative, funded by the U. S. Department of Education, brings engaging, high-quality media to young children who may be at risk for academic difficulties due to economic and social disadvantages. The initiative aims to deliver early mathematics and literacy resources on new and emerging digital platforms such as tablet computers, interactive whiteboards (IWBs), and smartphones, as well as better-established technologies such as computers, video displays, and gaming consoles, and to create learning experiences that leverage the unique capabilities of these various technology platforms. The 2012 Context Study of the Use of Technology and PBS KIDS Transmedia in the Home Environment is an important part of the multiyear summative evaluation by Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), and SRI International (SRI) of the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative. The study responds to a need to understand family patterns of media and technology use at home--a need recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), and PBS. This Home Study extends the survey and focus group analyses produced in the authors' 2012 Ready To Learn Parent Study by analyzing how Ready To Learn families adopt, use, and report benefitting from technology and PBS KIDS transmedia in their homes. A total of 14 low-income families with children ages 2-8, participated in the Home Study (seven on the east coast, seven on the west coast) and were given a laptop, a tablet computer, and a guide directing them to available PBS KIDS transmedia content such as online games, tablet apps, and television programs. The authors used strategic sampling methods to maximize participation and diversity within their sample. On both coasts they attempted to enroll families that represented a range of technology use and comfort. On the east coast, researchers called eligible families enrolled in the 2012 Ready To Learn Prekindergarten Mathematics Pilot Study on a rolling basis until seven families agreed to participate. On the west coast, eligible families were stratified based on language(s) spoken in the home, whether the family had a home computer, and whether the family had home Internet access. To ensure that families were selected randomly, they used a lottery system to rank families, and then called them in order until seven families agreed to participate. This study confirms results from other work, showing that although the digital divide persists, low-income families are increasingly using new forms of technology, in addition to television, for entertainment, communication, and information-seeking. Children in particular often use the websites and apps associated with their favorite television programs and characters, making the Ready To Learn push to create transmedia timely. Often children are using technology on their own, particularly when they have access to easy-to-use devices like iPads. Families in this study firmly believed that technology could be beneficial and educational for their children, but they were also concerned with its potential to interfere with other important aspects of childhood--active, outdoor play, for example. Parents try to impose limits and remain, if not involved, at least aware of what their children are doing when they are using technology. But the realities of busy lives and the ease of using devices like tablets and smartphones away from parents' gaze, make it difficult for them to keep up. (Contains 3 tables and 3 footnotes.) Transmedia play is a new way to understand how children develop critical media literacy and new media literacies through their interactions with contemporary media that links stories and structures across platforms. This essay highlights five characteristics of transmedia play that make it particularly useful for learning: "resourcefulness," "sociality," "mobility," "accessibility," and "replayability," and explains how each characteristic relates to digital and media literacy education.
