Recent advances in radio astrometry with the VLBA have resulted in near micro-arcsecond accurate trigonometric parallax and proper motion measurements for masers in star forming regions. We are now poised to directly measure the full 3-dimensional locations and motions of every massive star forming region in the Milky Way and for the first time to map its spiral structure. Such measurements would also yield the full kinematics of the Milky Way and determine its fundamental parameters (Ro and To) with 1% accuracy. Coupled with other observations this would yield the distribution of mass among the various components (including dark matter) of the Milky Way.

To determine whether less able readers could use the strategies they had been taught, a study investigated the transfer effects of training in the use of graphic organizers and summary writing on readers' recognition of the compare/contrast text structure. Subjects, 70 freshmen at a western New York state college of liberal arts and sciences in a required developmental reading/study skills course, were randomly assigned to an experimental or a control group and divided into four ability levels for each group according to raw score performance on the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test comprehension subtest. Subjects were given instruction on eight readings consisting of scientific expository text, each of which had a comparison-contrast internal organization; they then took an evaluation posttest consisting of four scientific comparison-contrast passages. Results indicated that transfer of training to real-world tasks did occur at each of the ability levels tested. However, training in the strategy did not appear to have any effect on the subjects (as compared to those in the control groups), except for the lowest ability group which apparently did benefit from the training. This chapter delves into the detailed structure of an atom, building on the concepts introduced in the previous chapter. It explains that an atom consists of three main subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. The main purpose of this study is to determine the gifted students' self-efficacy of educational technology for technology and design. It is also aimed to find out whether there is a statistically significant difference in terms of the gender, the special talent area, the type of school, the grade level, the education level and income rate of families, and the preference of using information and communication technologies. In this study quantitative method was preferred and descriptive screening model was used since it was aimed to determine the students' self-efficacy. The research was conducted with 1.376 pupils who were students in twelve Science and Art Centers in different regions of Turkey. As a data collection tool, "The Self-Efficacy of Educational Technologies for Technology and Design Scale" developed by Author (2019) was used. The scale was prepared in 5-point Likert type and consisted of 4 sub-factors with 20 items. It was found that the four-factor structure explained 52.45% of the total variance for the concept to be measured. Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient value of the scale was a =0.89. According to the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) results, the items of the scale were grouped under the title of sub-factors as "Technology and Design", "Problem Solving", "Appropriate Tool Selection and the Use of Technology". The scale was found to be highly compatible in terms of current compliance values. According to the results of the research, it was found that the gifted students' self-efficacy of educational technology for technology and design was at "Good" (x-bar=3.86 / x-bar=77.26). In addition, while there was no significant difference in terms of the gifted students' self-efficacy of educational technologies for technology and design according to the gender variable, statistically significant difference was found according to the special talent area, the type of school, the grade level, the education level and income rate of their families, and the preference of using information and communication technologies. According to the results of the research, it is observed that gifted students were at "Good" level in terms of the results of the sub factors "the Use of Technology", "the Problem Solving Skills and the Appropriate Tool Selection and the Technology and Design". By the way it can be said that the individualized education program and individual talent recognition program that special talented individuals follow in Science and Art Centers generally meet the efficiency gains.

Introduction. The subject of this work is the number, composition and structure of personnel of research organisations subordinate to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, located in regions that differ in terms of research and development conditions. Such information can be useful in identifying stable characteristics of the personnel model of a scientific organisation for the formation of a system of restrictions that will allow in the future to develop an optimal personnel model of a scientific organisation for a given target criterion.  Methods. To achieve this goal, theoretical (analysis) and empirical (structuring the available data, generalization, classification, comparison) research methods were used. The empirical base of the research was information on the number and composition of personnel of scientific organisations subordinate to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, presented in the database of the statistical observation form, Form ZP-Science.  Results and Discussion. A review of the number, composition and structure of personnel of research organisations is carried out for a sample of 278 organisations in several regions of Russia, differing not only in the number of scientific institutions represented on their territory under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, but also in socio-economic conditions.  Conclusion. The analysis made it possible to identify the characteristics of the personnel model of a scientific organisation subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, which is resistant to differences in the regional environment.

We have studied the archetypal Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum radio galaxy, PKS 1934-638, using the Australian Long Baseline Array, augmented with two new telescopes that greatly improve the angular resolution of the array. These VLBI observations represent the first scientific results from a new antenna in NZ and the first antenna of the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). A compact double radio source, PKS 1934-638, has been monitored over a period of 40 years, and the observation described here provides the latest datum, eight years after the previous observation, to aid in the study of the long-term evolution of the source structure. We take advantage of these new long baselines to probe PKS 1934-638 at the relatively low frequency of 1.4 GHz, in order to examine the effects of optical depth on the structure of the radio source. Optical depth effects, resulting in the observation of frequency dependent structure, may have previously been interpreted in terms of an expansion of the source as a function of time. Expansion and frequency dependent effects are important to disentangle in order to estimate the age of PKS 1934-638. We show that frequency dependent structure effects are likely to be important in PKS 1934-638 and present a simple two-dimensional synchrotron source model in which opacity effects due to synchrotron self-absorption are taken into account. Evidence for expansion of the radio source over 40 years is therefore weak, with consequences for the estimated age of the radio source.

A qualitatively new, much more liberal and efficient organisation of science is proposed and justified, in connection with growing debate about further role and development of fundamental science. Although the key ideas can be explained with the help of "common sense" arguments accessible to a "general" audience, they are based on the rigorous analysis within the recently advanced "universal concept of complexity" (physics/9806002, physics/0211071), which can be applied, due to its universality, also to science structure itself considered as a complex system. We demonstrate thus the application of the ultimate criterion of completeness of a system of knowledge (and viability of related intelligence) that should be able to derive consistent, provable, and practically relevant conclusions about its own purpose, sense, evolution, and current state.

Public NOVA Science Seminars Evolution and the Structure of the Natural World Feb 3, 2012 - Dr. Ilya Temkin This Video is of the science seminar on Friday, February 3, 2012 in the CE Forum on the Annandale Campus. The seminar, by Dr. Ilya Temkin, is titled “Evolution and the Structure of the Natural World.” Temkin is a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian) and the American Museum of Natural History (New York). Every general biology textbook begins with the exposition of the biological hierarchy, the enormous range of levels of biological organization extending from microscopic scale of molecules to the scale of the entire biosphere. It is typically used to show the incredible range and complexity of biological disciplines but adds little to the discussion of its significance. Temkin will attempt to show that the hierarchical organization of life is essential for understanding of how life works and evolves. More specifically, he will examine striking similarities of biological processes across hierarchical levels - from regulation of gene expression to ecological interactions - and its relevance to the origin of species. Temkin’s main scientific interest is how life evolves. His work on marine bivalves took him all around the world, including field work in Australia, Thailand, Mexico and Mozambique among other places. His interest in evolution includes human cultural evolution, particularly the history of musical instruments. He has written a few scientific articles on the evolution of musical instruments. He also builds and plays different musical instruments based on archaeological finds and as a musician has played extensively, including recent performances at the Library of Congress and Hillwood Museum in Washington, D.C. We use time-domain electromagnetic simulations to determine the spectral characteristics of the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Arrays (HERA) antenna. These simulations are part of a multi-faceted campaign to determine the effectiveness of the dish's design for obtaining a detection of redshifted 21 cm emission from the epoch of reionization. Our simulations show the existence of reflections between HERA's suspended feed and its parabolic dish reflector that fall below -40 dB at 150 ns and, for reasonable impedance matches, have a negligible impact on HERA's ability to constrain EoR parameters. It follows that despite the reflections they introduce, dishes are effective for increasing the sensitivity of EoR experiments at relatively low cost. We find that electromagnetic resonances in the HERA feed's cylindrical skirt, which is intended to reduce cross coupling and beam ellipticity, introduces significant power at large delays ($-40$ dB at 200 ns) which can lead to some loss of measurable Fourier modes and a modest reduction in sensitivity. Even in the presence of this structure, we find that the spectral response of the antenna is sufficiently smooth for delay filtering to contain foreground emission at line-of-sight wave numbers below $k_\parallel \lesssim 0.2$ $h$Mpc$^{-1}$, in the region where the current PAPER experiment operates. Incorporating these results into a Fisher Matrix analysis, we find that the spectral structure observed in our simulations has only a small effect on the tight constraints HERA can achieve on parameters associated with the astrophysics of reionization.
