Exercise - You need to find a way to elevate your heart rate for 150 minutes a week MINIMUM. This doesn't have to be in a gym, you just need to find a way to elevate your heart rate. 4. Vulnerability - Be vulnerable, try new things! Meet new people! We know this is hard to do during covid, but there are ways to do it safely.  "Look after yourself, put yourself in vulnerable positions, try new things and you will find new moments of happiness and that is the pursuit of excellence. Preregistration for experiment investigating the effect of cognitive load on multiple-goal pursuit.

Visual cues such as borders are important to a pursuit tracking task. Four protective materials were evaluated in the BLASER tracking simulator using 2 target vehicles; one vehicle had a high contrast aiming patch, the other did not. The purpose of this study was to determine possible performance differences attributable to the use of two different target vehicles while using laser ocular protective materials. Nine volunteers used an optical tracking device in the BLASER tracking simulator to track targets moving at a constant angular velocity of 5 mrad/sec under both bright and dawn/dusk ambient light conditions. The dawn/dusk ambient light condition was created by inserting a 2.7 OD neutral density filter in the optical pathway of the tracking device. Each volunteer completed five trials under each possible combination of ambient light level, absence or presence of the target patch, and laser filter condition. Analysis of Variance for the horizontal standard deviation scores revealed highly statistically significant main effects for light level and filter condition, as well as a light level x filter interaction.

During the first crisis of the early 1990s, higher education institutions in Maryland experienced a decline in public funding and were consequently forced to compete for scarce resources. By 1992, higher education appropriations as a percentage of the state general fund had fallen to 11.1%; a decrease of 2.4% in just 2 years. Some improvement had been made by fiscal year (FY) 1995: Adjusting state funding support by full-time equivalent enrollments for FY 1995, community colleges had realized significant gains in their funding level from 1990 and independent institutions had recovered their level of support. Public four-year institutions, however, still remained significantly below their 1990 levels. The 1995 state legislative session resulted in further decreases for the four-year institutions. In response to the general frustrations over funding, leaders from the three segments developed a coordinated strategy in 1996 to focus on the total general fund support rather than individual shares. The ultimate goal of the group was to increase the average general fund appropriations and increase the state's higher education investment to 14% of its general fund budget by FY 2002. While the coordinated strategy was not completely implemented, it did result in an increase in general fund support for FY 1997 by $33 million from FY 1996 and conflict between the segments has been reduced. This book chronicles five decades of struggle to introduce family planning into one of the largest, most complex countries in sub-Saharan Africa: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Interweaving details of major political, social, and economic events into the history of family planning in DRC (formerly Zaïre), the book analyses the achievements and setbacks of five decades of programmatic work. President Mobutu’s 1972 discourse on Naissances Désirables (desirable births) opened the door to organized family planning programs, which gained considerable momentum in the 1980s despite societal norms favoring large families. Two pillages and armed conflict paralyzed development work during the decade of the 1990s, and family planning was one of multiple public health programs that struggled to regain lost ground in the 2000s. With new donor funding and implementing agencies, the 2010s witnessed rapid programmatic expansion and improved strategies. By 2018, family planning was operating as a well-oiled machine. But progress is fragile. The book ends by tracing the deleterious effects of the colonial period to contemporary programming and individual contraceptive use. It asks hard questions about donor financing. And it details the six conditions needed to accelerate family planning progress in the DRC, in pursuit of providing millions of Congolese women and men with the means of controlling their own fertility. The book will be of interest to development and public health researchers and practitioners, as well as to historians of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We present a simple and stable numerical method to approximate the ground state of a quantum many-body system by multiple determinant states. This method searches these determinant states one by one according to the matching pursuit algorithm. The first determinant state is identical to that of the Hartree-Fock theory. Calculations for two-dimensional Hubbard model serve as a demonstration.

This paper demonstrates that if the restricted isometry constant $\delta_{K+1}$ of the measurement matrix $A$ satisfies $$ \delta_{K+1} < \frac{1}{\sqrt{K}+1}, $$ then a greedy algorithm called Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) can recover every $K$--sparse signal $\mathbf{x}$ in $K$ iterations from $A\x$. By contrast, a matrix is also constructed with the restricted isometry constant $$ \delta_{K+1} = \frac{1}{\sqrt{K}} $$ such that OMP can not recover some $K$-sparse signal $\mathbf{x}$ in $K$ iterations. This result positively verifies the conjecture given by Dai and Milenkovic in 2009.

Eight United States colleges and universities were selected for the study: Purdue University (Indiana), University of California at Los Angeles, Stanford University (California), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Temple University (Pennsylvania), Cornell University (New York), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Howard University (District of Columbia). All have SROPs as well as graduate departments that have enrolled alumni of these programs. At each institution two SROP alumni were profiled (one a beginning doctoral student and another advanced candidate), along with at least one faculty member who had served as advocate and mentor to the students, and an administrator who managed the SROP. The report provides narrative summaries of each interview with a photograph of the individual and personal and academic data appearing at the beginning. An appendix is a directory of SROP programs across the nation. (JB)

The Pursuit of Happiness is an essay by Charles Dudley Warner originally published in the Century Magazine (December 1900). The author questions the wisdom in this phrase, "the pursuit of happiness", which became the "new gospel" for the American people after it was used in the American Declaration of Independence (1776). The problem, Warner begins, is that "Instead of simply being happy in the condition where we are...we say that to-morrow, next year, in ten or twenty or thirty years, when we have arrived at certain coveted possessions or situation, we will be happy." Most people, in the author's estimation, view happiness as that state of being achieved when you have attained your goal of wealth, knowledge or power. He concludes with the suggestion that "we need to consider that happiness is an inner condition, not to be raced after". This is a Ralat Readings recording.
