An increasing body of evidence suggests that transitioning from school to adult life can be challenging for young people with intellectual disability. Transition from secondary school includes preparation of students before leaving the school environment and may continue several years into adult life. Transition challenges may include isolation, mental health problems, and reduced participation in employment and tertiary education. Some literature indicate links between poor post-school outcomes, and ineffective collaboration between school systems, disability services, and employers. Yet, consolidated evidence to understand how young people themselves experience transition from school is needed. The aim of this scoping review is to draw together current literature reporting what young people with intellectual disability say about transitioning to life after school. Methods: Using the Joanna Briggs scoping review methodology and the population, concept, context (PCC) framework, a systematic strategy will identify peer-reviewed qualitative research and grey literature reporting the voices of young people with intellectual disability to better understand personal experiences of transition to life after school. The PCC framework outlined in this section directed the research question and the development of the search strategy for this study. Population The population in this review will be young people with intellectual disability aged 15-30 years to capture a broad transition period. This age range reflects the varied definitions of what constitutes a young person. Increasing evidence also indicates that the transition to adulthood often extends well into the 20s or even later (1, 22), particularly for people with intellectual disability (23). There is no universally accepted definition of intellectual disability, and language use changes over time and in different contexts. Therefore, for the purposes of this scoping review a broad approach to searching will be taken, utilising a range of current and older terms including disability or disabled or handicap; intellectual, learning, and developmental; cognitive impairment; and mental retardation to include US literature prior to 2013. The term ‘mental retardation’ is now considered derogatory in most English speaking countries, and was officially removed from the DSM-5 and ICD-11 in 2007, but was retained in some publications for several years. The use of the term also persisted in US federal policies until 2010, when President Obama signed the legislation required to replace the term with intellectual disability (24). The final rule was adopted in January 2013 (25). Concept The concept or phenomenon of interest to be explored in this scoping review is the experiences of young people with intellectual disability transitioning to life after school. This phenomenon incorporates three key phases for which varying terminology is used within the literature before, during and after transitioning. In the context of this scoping review, the search strategy will include terms that relate to: a) planning for the end of secondary education, which should take place several years in advance, b) the time of leaving high school and moving and settling into what comes next, for example, c) living independently, community participation, education and training, and/or employment. Therefore research and grey literature about any post-school setting will be considered, including on post-secondary education, disability services, and the wider community. However, if used as a main search string, these terms may narrow the results significantly, so it is likely the settings will be considered in the extraction phase to help organise the review and analysis. Context Literature reporting young people’s own experiences and views on the transition to adulthood will be prioritised to better understand what they consider important about their transition from school. Young people have a moral and ethical right to be involved in decisions that impact their lives, in line with the UN Convention of Rights of the Child (UNCRC) (26) and UN Convention of Rights of Persons with Disability (UNCRPD) (27). The searches will be for qualitative research involving young people with intellectual disability as participants, and grey literature that focuses on what is important to young people. Qualitative study designs including, but not limited to, phenomenological, grounded theory, ethnographic, action research and narrative inquiry will be considered. Papers that include a range of perspectives will be included so long as the views or experiences of young people themselves can be clearly distinguished in the findings. Where voices of parents, educators, service providers have been included, the reviewers will prioritise the perspectives of young people. The review will explore scope and foci of topics, identify gaps in current evidence, and highlight approaches and methods used by investigators to include young peoples’ voices. Database searches for relevant qualitative research will include ERIC via Proquest, Ovid MEDLINE, selected EbscoHost databases, and Web of Science. Non-indexed and grey literature such as policies and reports will be searched via TROVE, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, and Google (with URL control and by crawling key agency websites). Studies will be selected using a three-step process: i) managing search results and removing duplicates, ii) title and abstract screening by two independent reviewers, and iii) full text review of included articles against inclusion criteria by two independent reviewers. Data will be tabulated and presented in a narrative summary, aligning with the objectives and scope of this review. Discussion: Review findings will inform policy makers, educators and disability support organisations of transition challenges experienced by young people with intellectual disability. The findings will enable the design and implementation of more accessible and holistic transition to address barriers in the process, ensuring future guidelines reflect the voices of those they intend to support.

In reviewing the research of experimental psychology, genetic psychology, and psychopathology, the author finds the data show: (1) the extreme importance of the period between the third and sixth year when the Oedipus situation of the child is resolved and when he takes the first step in the use of reason; (2) the importantce of the latency period between the second stage of childhood and puberty which corresponds to the sublimations necessary for the intellectual tasks to be performed emotively; (3) the processes of conditioning which bring into play the instrumental means of knowledge and a system of motivations for knowledge; and (4) current teaching practices as they correspond to systems of values and not to "scientifically objective" data. This protocol outlines an intended study relating to the transition of people with intellectual disabilities from school and childhood to adult life. A systematic scoping review (Tricco, 2018) will be undertaken to establish and summarise what is currently known about the perspectives, lived experiences and goals of young people with intellectual disabilities and their family members about this transition. Through understanding how this area has been studied to date and what is already known on this topic, the review also aims to identify if there are gaps in the literature that suggest a need for further research in this area.

The Narrative was first published in 1850, and was widely distributed by the Abolitionist Movement. It was one of the catalysts for the rise of anti-slavery public opinion in the years leading up to the Civil War. Though Olive Gilbert's writing about Sojourner takes on a patronizing tone at times (a weakness of some Abolitionists), The Narrative of Sojourner Truth remains a moving and historic document, chronicling the struggles of African-Americans under slavery and the life of a truly remarkable woman. The Mikado is the ninth of the 14 Gilbert and Sullivan musical collaborations. It opened in 1885, had the second longest run for any work of musical theatre of the time, and remains the most frequently performed Gilbert and Sullivan. It was adapted as a children's book by W. S. Gilbert entitled The Story of The Mikado, which was Gilbert's last literary work (and published posthumously). It is a retelling of The Mikado, with various changes to simplify language or make it more suitable for children.<br><br>This is that children's book. The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipu is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert, their ninth of fourteen operatic collaborations. It opened on 14 March 1885, in London, where it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances, which was the second longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that, in Europe and America, at least 150 companies were producing the opera. The Mikado remains the most frequently performed Savoy Opera, and it is especially popular with amateur and school productions. A comic operetta which is a satire on the themes of fashion and pretension and hero-worship. Bunthorne is a poet who pretends to be highly "idealised" in order to impress the ladies. They all worship him, except for Patience, the dairy maid, who is the only one he loves. However, his grand plan goes awry with the arrival of Grosvenor who is more idealised and more poetical then he is. The ladies all flock after Grosvenor instead, until Bunthorne curses him with poor fashion sense and stoutness! But will the curse bring Bunthorne his Patience? Iolanthe is a fairy banished from fairyland for the crime of marrying a mortal. Her half-fairy, half-human son Strephon is a fairy down to the waist, but his legs are human. He loves Phyllis, but she is courted by the whole House of Lords and the Lord High Chancellor himself! Strephon decides the only way to win his love is to go into Parliament, with the help of his mother and all his fairy aunts. None of them understand politics, but that doesn't matter. He will soon make some changes, starting with throwing the Peerage open to competitive examination! But how will Phyllis react when she catches Strephon with an impossibly young and very beautiful lady who he claims is his fairy mother? <br><br>This is a spoken "poetic" version of the libretto written by W. Sir William Schwenck Gilbert was an English dramatist, librettist, poet and illustrator best known for the fourteen comic operas (known as the Savoy operas) produced in collaboration with the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan. The most famous of these include H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and one of the most frequently performed works in the history of musical theatre, The Mikado. Sojourner Truth (born Isabella Baumfree) was born into slavery in 1797 (or thereabouts) in Swartekill, Ulster County, New York. This narrative, as told by Sojourner Truth to her friend Olive Gilbert, recounts to the best of her recollection what she and her family endured while they were the legal property of other human beings. These life experiences served as the catalysts for her becoming, in her later years, an outspoken abolutionist and women's rights activist. Her forgiving attitude toward those who once treated her and her loved ones with such cruelty is an example for all who would aspire to heal and move on from traumatizing life experiences. The voice of Olive Gilbert comes through in this narrative, and together, she and Sojourner Truth build a compelling case against slavery. - Summary by Holly Jenson

In typical Gilbert and Sullivan "Topsy Turvy" style, the King of Barataria has gone missing! He was stolen as a baby and raised in secrecy as one of two gondoliers (nobody knows which) and his wife would like very much to know where he is! The Grand Inquisitor appears in Venice to take both Gondoliers to a life of luxury and rulership - but is dismayed to discover that both are reluctant to leave their wives behind. Somehow two husbands have managed to acquire three wives, and nobody is happy at the idea of marrying a vulgar fraction! <br><br> This is a spoken "poetic" version of the libretto written by W. S. Gilbert, where a full cast of voices brings the sparkling wit of Gilbert to the fore, and will enhance understanding and appreciation of this comic light opera. Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan fame also wrote non-musical plays without Sullivan as a partner. Here is a dramatic play far afield from the comedy musicals we often think of when we hear Gilbert's name: Prince Florian of Spain arrives on The Island of Broken Hearts, peopled by "we maidens all (save one [their dwarf protector]) [who] have dearly loved, and those we loved have died. We, broken hearts, knit by the sympathy of kindred woe, have sought this isle far from the ken of man; and having loved, and having lost our loves, stand pledged to love no living thing again."
