We test the effect of an intervention aimed at encouraging pro-social bystander reactions to online hostility in a field experiment on Facebook.

This pre-analysis plan outlines our approach to analyzing data from the National Center for Health Statistics,on opioid overdose deaths (OOD) at the county level, specifically for the third wave of the Opioid Epidemic (OE).The third wave accounts for the rise in the use of synthetic opioids from year 2013 until present. For our analysis, we will particularly be focusing on the years 2013-2019 for which we have obtained the mortality data. Our focus is to investigate the impact of social connections on OOD by designing a statistical analysis framework. The data includes information on the number of OODs in different counties in the United States, and we plan to use this data to estimate the effect of social connections on these deaths. The analysis is divided into an exploratory phase (2013-2017) and a confirmatory phase (2018-2019).

"Boomers and Political Extremism – the Facebook Effect" will investigate the influence of Facebook usage on the political beliefs of Baby Boomers in comparison to Generation X and Millennials. This study aims to explore how different generations engage with social media, specifically Facebook, and its potential role in shaping extremist political views. By analysing patterns of social media use and political ideologies across age groups, the study seeks to unravel generational differences in susceptibility to radicalisation and provide insights into the impact of online platforms on extremist ideologies.

This article is from International Archives of Medicine , volume 6 . Abstract Background: Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of June 2012, Facebook reports more than 1 billion active users. Objective of study was to evaluate the effect of Facebook on the social life, health and behavior of medical students. Methodology: It was a cross sectional, observational and questionnaire based study conducted in Dow University OF Health Sciences during the period of January 2012 to November 2012. We attempted to interview all the participants who could be approached during the period of the study. Participants were MBBS students, while all students of other courses and programs were taken as exclusion criteria. Approximately 1050 questionnaires were distributed to participants. Fifty questionnaires were rejected due to incomplete answers, yielding 1000 usable responses for an approximate 95% response rate. Informed verbal consent was taken from each participant. Study was ethically approved by Institutional Review Board of Dow University of Health Sciences. All the data was entered and analyzed through SPSS 19. Result: Out of total 1000 participants, males were 400 (40%) and females were 600 (60%). Participants were in the age group of 18–25 years with a mean age of 20.08 years. Most of the participants were using Facebook daily (N = 640, 64%) for around 3–4 hours (N = 401, 40.1%). Majority of them (N = 359, 35.9%) believed that they were equally active on Facebook and in real life while few believed their social life became worse after start using Facebook (N = 372, 37.2%). Most of the participants admitted that they were considered as shy in real world (N = 390, 39.0%) while in the world of Facebook they were considered as fun loving by their friends (N = 603, 60.3%). A large number of participants (N = 715, 75%) complained of mood swings. Conclusion: Youngsters are willing to compromise their health, social life, studies for the sake of fun and entertainment or whatever satisfaction they get after using Facebook. What we observed in our study was that although majority of our subjects showed multiple signs of Facebook addiction, they don’t realize it and if even they realize it they don’t want to quit Facebook and even if they want to quit, they can’t. Our observance concluded that majority of the users are highly addicted.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of using Facebook on improving English Language Writing Skills and Vocabulary Enrichment among University of Jordan Sophomore Students, and to answer the study questions: Are there any statistically significant differences (α=0.05) in the writing mean scores of sophomore students that can be attributed to the teaching method (i.e. Facebook vs. conventional)? Are there any statistically significant differences (α=0.05) in the vocabulary mean score of sophomore students that can be attributed to the teaching method (i.e. Facebook vs. conventional)? To achieve the study goals and to answer its questions, a random sample was selected which consisted of (30) sophomore students from the University of Jordan and distributed to experimental group (15) students and control group (15) students. The control group was taught by the conventional way, while the experimental group was taught by the use of Facebook. Data were collected and analyzed to answer the questions using the pre-test, post-test, means and standard deviations, MANCOVA to check differences on pre and posttest for the dimensions of the test, ANCOVA to check differences on pre and posttest for total score, Test /Re-test to check the internal reliability of the test using person correlation. Results showed positive effect of using Facebook on improving the students’ writing skills and vocabulary enrichment of the experimental group, compared to the control group. Based on the results, the researcher recommended to focus on Facebook usage as a teaching and learning tool and motivating the teachers to adopt and apply Facebook in their writing and vocabulary teaching.

Despite the growing prominence of Facebook in the lives of college students, few studies have investigated the potential of these innovative web-based communication tools for engaging students in academic discussions. This study used a pre-test, post-test design in two introductory-level courses at a large public university to compare students' (n = 107) perceptions of, attitudes toward, and perceived learning associated with two different online discussion tools: the Facebook group forum and a university-sponsored online tool. Although pre-course surveys indicated that few students enjoyed online discussions, post-course analysis revealed significant changes in students' opinions regarding the value and functionality of web-based discussion forums, with Facebook as their clear preference. Students who participated in Facebook discussions enjoyed the site's familiarity, navigability, and aesthetically appealing interface. Facebook users also reported that they were able to become better acquainted with classmates, felt like valued participants in the course, and learned more course material. This study suggests that, if used appropriately, Facebook may help to increase college student engagement in certain learning contexts by cultivating classroom community and stimulating intellectual discourse.

Group work and fieldwork were found to enhance interdependence/cooperation of participants, as well as strengthen their understanding of STSE issues. Participants found it difficult to find a balance between the different perspectives afforded by STSE studies. A number of recommendations are offered to strengthen teacher preparation in an Egyptian context.

This study examines the use of Facebook Markup Language (FBML) to design an e-learning model to facilitate teaching and learning in an academic setting. The qualitative research study presents a case study on how, Facebook is used to support collaborative activities in higher education. We used FBML to design an e-learning model called processes for e-learning resources in the Specialist Learning Resources Diploma (SLRD) program. Two groups drawn from the SLRD program were used; First were the participants in the treatment group and second in the control group. Statistical analysis in the form of a t-test was used to compare the dependent variables between the two groups. The findings show a difference in the mean score between the pre-test and the post-test for the treatment group (achievement, the skill, trends). Our findings suggest that the use of FBML can support collaborative knowledge creation and improved the academic achievement of participatns. The findings are expected to provide insights into promoting the use of Facebook in a learning management system (LMS).
