Gunaydin, Selcuk, Yilmaz, and Hazan (2018) provided evidence for status quo preference in resolving mate selection trade offs. The present experiments are modeled after Gunaydin et al. Study 1b. As in that study, participants will be randomly assigned to one of two conditions: the trustworthy partner, attractive alternative condition or the attractive partner, trustworthy alternative condition. The main difference compared to Gunaydin et al. Study 1b is that in the present experiments the scenarios will describe a situation where commitment level to the partner is likely to be lower.

This open access book, summarising the research conducted at this Jean Monnet Chair, seeks to identify the ethical spirit of European Union (EU) values. EU integration began at the economic level; human rights were only added at a later stage. Finally, the Lisbon Treaty turned the EU into a ‘Union of values’ by enshrining certain concepts in Art 2 TEU. This provision can be seen as a hub linked to various other provisions of EU primary and secondary law. The values contained therein have, amongst others, been applied to two areas (digitalisation and non-financial reporting, partly in sports), and further specified in others (health and partly in sports). This book analyses the evolution of values (ratione temporis) and the questions of who is entitled and who is obliged (ratione personae). Besides the external perspective (ratione limitis; e.g., Brexit), it focuses on the composition of the EU’s common values (ratione materiae). As Art 2 TEU can be viewed as a hub, it is essential to focus on various relations, not only between values, but also between values and other provisions of EU law, as well as other concepts. Based on this description of the status quo, the book subsequently addresses a possible future direction, arguing for an additional narrative (trust), an additional value (environmental protection), and a more communitarian Union. In closing, apart from the classical commitment of the EU and the Member States to uphold the values of the EU, the book discusses the level of individuals and values as virtues. Various figures and tables complement this overview of the status quo of the Union of values and outline of its future direction.

Abstract Rather than conforming to the assumption of perfect rationality in neoclassical economic theory, decision behavior has been shown to display a host of systematic biases. Properly understood, these patterns can be instrumentalized to improve outcomes in the public realm. We conducted a laboratory experiment to study whether decisions over health insurance policies are subject to status quo bias and, if so, whether experience mitigates this framing effect. Choices in two treatment groups with status quo defaults are compared to choices in a neutrally framed control group. A two-step design features sorting of subjects into the groups, allowing us to control for selection effects due to risk preferences. The results confirm the presence of a status quo bias in consumer choices over health insurance policies. However, this effect of the default framing does not persist as subjects repeat this decision in later periods of the experiment. Our results have implications for health care policy, for example suggesting that the use of non-binding defaults in health insurance can facilitate the spread of co-insurance policies and thereby help contain health care expenditure.

The title of this monograph, "Occupy Honors Education," refers to the Occupy Movement that originated in the United States in New York's Zuccotti Park in 2011 and to the principles that informed the movement and its resistance to an economic status quo benefitting the top one percent in America. Importantly, however, the editors encourage readers to note that the concerns articulated by the Occupy Movement about diversity, access, and inclusion parallel the formulation provided earlier by Finnie D. Coleman in "The Problem with Diversity: Moving Past the Numbers," the closing chapter of the first National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) diversity monograph, "Setting the Table for Diversity," edited by Lisa L. Coleman and Jonathan D. Kotinek, and published in 2010 (see ED566710). The editors of this volume conceived of education generally, and honors education specifically, to be bound up with preparing graduates to engage the democratic process productively. The questions of who is represented in that educated population, whether or not there are differences in access, and who is included in decision-making processes are integral to the honors mission. The Occupy Movement articulated principles for action that highlight how traditional structures in US culture are inadequate to address these concerns. The voices highlighted in this monograph add depth and value to the conversation about diversity in honors and provide a vision for how honors can lead the way in achieving inclusive excellence.

Dr. Michael Klein played a vital role in placing maternity care at the heart of family medicine. He advocated for family-friendly birth practices, the re-introduction of midwifery and the elimination of routine intrusive interventions like episiotomy. These professional themes are central to Dr. Klein’s first book, but Dissident Doctor is also a personal memoir of a man who was born to left-wing parents in the McCarthy era, moved to Canada during the Vietnam War, and cared for his wife, filmmaker Bonnie Klein, after she suffered a series of major strokes in 1987. We spoke with Dr. Klein in November.

Although education pays off handsomely in the United States, children from low-income families attain less education than children from more advantaged families. In this article, Cecilia Elena Rouse and Lisa Barrow investigate why family background is so strongly linked to education. The authors show that family socioeconomic status affects such educational outcomes as test scores, grade retention, and high school graduation, and that educational attainment strongly affects adult earnings. They then go on to ask why children from more advantaged families get more or better schooling than those from less advantaged families. For low-income students, greater psychological costs, the cost of forgone income (continuing in school instead of getting a job), and borrowing costs all help to explain why these students attain less education than more privileged children. And these income-related differences in costs may themselves be driven by differences in access to quality schools. As a result, U.S. public schools tend to reinforce the transmission of low socioeconomic status from parents to children. Policy interventions aimed at improving school quality for children from disadvantaged families thus have the potential to increase social mobility. Despite the considerable political attention paid to increasing school accountability, as in the No Child Left Behind Act, along with charter schools and vouchers to help the children of poor families attend private school, to date the best evidence suggests that such programs will improve student achievement only modestly. Based on the best research evidence, smaller class sizes seem to be one promising avenue for improving school quality for disadvantaged students. High teacher quality is also likely to be important. However, advantaged families, by spending more money on education outside school, can and will partly undo policy attempts to equalize school quality for poor and nonpoor children.

We will conduct a systematic scoping literature search to provide a comprehensive overview of the landscape of health economic evaluations of interventions in health promotion and prevention in germany. Additionally, a qualitative analysis of the identified publications will be conducted to identify best practice examples. The search will be conducted in three databases: Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase and Web of Science Core Collection. The review decision process will be detailed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses in the extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The search strategy was developed by a team of three researchers. At least three researchers with different disciplinary background will perform the screening, selection and analysis to ensure the rigor and quality of the process and reduce interpretation bias.

Over the course of their history, bilateral Sino-Japanese relations have experienced a paradoxical relationship of autonomy and interdependence, mutual respect and suspicion, and admiration and condescension. The approach these regional powers take towards their bilateral relations -- whether it is competition, cooperation, or the status quo -- will circumscribe the framework for regional stability in the coming decades. To the casual observer, the cultural animosities stemming from World War II atrocities might indicate that diplomatic relations will be forever troubled. However, mutually beneficial economic ties have always existed between these two compatible economies. This thesis unravels the complex relationship by examining the salient diplomatic, economic, and security issues. It finds that the doomsayers who cite virulent anti-Japanese nationalism in China are too pessimistic and the liberally inclined advocates of economic interdependence are too optimistic. It also finds that security concerns in the Taiwan Straits and the East China Sea have generally been quelled by the pragmatic political elites on both sides, who have managed to diffuse any potential escalation into armed conflict. Thus, the future for Sino-Japanese relations portends a continuation of the status quo, with bounded fluctuations between the optimists and the doomsayers.
