Setting Speed Limits - Vermont Local Roads Program 1994 - Video VH-330 - Addressing municipal responsibility for setting safe speed limits on local roads, this video describes the traffic engineering survey to determine reasonable and safe speed. Six factors are considered in the survey: road characteristics, 85th percentile speed, roadside development and access, curves and hazardous locations, pedestrian activity and parking practices, and accident history. Final determination of an appropriate speed limit is not addressed, but the importance of proper signage and incorporating speed limits into local ordinance are emphasized.

We are interested to research how memory abilities contribute to numerical estimation tasks. Recall is an ability that is essential to many of our daily tasks, of which most require memory of some kind. A common finding when researching free recall of sequentially presented items are effects of recency and primacy, i.e. easier recall for the first and last items presented in a sequence (e.g. Murdock, 1962). Primacy and recency effects have also been shown to influence human decision making. For instance, candidates who perform on the first or last position are typically evaluated more favourably. It is, however, unclear how much primacy and recency effects in decision making can be explained by memory recall. In two previous experiments, we investigated how participants estimated the average of sequences of only numbers and found that the serial position weight of an item in this averaging task correlated higher with the recall probability of an item on this position in the free recall task when participants did not know which task lie ahead (randomly interpersed; r=0.6, Exp. 1) than when they did know which task lies ahead (blocked such that the first half of sequences were averaging tasks, and the second half were free recall tasks; r=0.38, Exp. 2). These correlations were mainly due to recency effects. Differences arising from such knowing or not knowing were investigated in recall tasks by Oberauer (2003) who called these procedures "pre-cueing" and "post-cueing", respectively. For a third experiment, we aim to generalize our findings to a cued recall task in which participants are presented not solely by a number, but a number associated to an object. As objects, we use shopping carts filled with six random products, each from a different product category. We aim to replicate our findings of numerical averaging from our first two experiments. Further, we try to get a more general understanding on contribution of memory to numerical estimation and thus include a further task in our experiment: summation. Interestingly, Scheibehenne (2019) found that participants especially rely on the middle items of a sequence when summing numbers up. This would suggest an opposite contribution of memory to this task. More likely, however, participants use different strategies when averaging and summing (possibly even adjusting for a bias in recency and primacy).

What's Not Working in the Vermont Mental Health Systems is a regular program produced by Marj Berthold for Cahnnel 17/Town Meeting TV viewers.

This pamphlet presents guidelines and tips for parents on setting limits for the behavior of young children. The need for limits and the goal of teaching children self-control are explained. Some general guidelines for limit setting are provided which include making the limits age-appropriate, recognizing the child's need for practice and repetition and to test or try out new limits, and understanding the importance of follow through and a calm, definite attitude. Next, specific tips for setting limits are presented: (1) be specific and clear; (2) be simple, brief, and to the point; (3) state directions positively; (4) use hard-line phrases selectively; (5) offer alternatives for unacceptable behavior; (6) replace threats with clear expectations and consequences; (7) eliminate questions you really don't mean to ask; (8) avoid labeling; (9) avoid ambivalent words; (10) replace authoritarian words; (11) offer choices when possible; (12) avoid comparisons with other children; and (13) use external references (e.g., clock, activity, signal) for setting limits. Additional suggestions concerning timing and limit setting include establishing routines, pointing out the sequence of activities, allowing time for transition from one activity to another, recognizing that it can be hard for children to stop an activity, and preparing children for new situations. The September 1988 newsletter of Commission VII (Counseling and Psychological Services) of the American College Personnel Association contained a survey addressing the issues of sexual intimacy in the training and practice of counselors, psychologists and educators. Approximately 800 surveys were mailed to the commission members. Participation in the survey was voluntary and anonymous. A total of 75 questionnaires were returned from 30 states. The most useful information from this survey is that which suggests a lack of awareness and training in some specific areas. One cause for concern is the number of therapists and clients who believe that social relationships during therapy or after termination are acceptable. The second major concern is the lack of training reported concerning dual relationships and erotic transference and countertransference. Finally, it appears that there is still much uncertainty concerning the propriety of social and romantic relationships between educators and students and supervisors and supervisees. This is disturbing due to reports that such relationships are harmful to the students and may even model future inappropriate sexual behavior with clients or students. Although the data resulting from the current survey are limited due to the low return rate, the comments of the respondents should be cause for reflection on the training and examples of behavior that are provided in college and university counseling centers. If Supersymmetry (SUSY) has a compressed spectrum the current limits from the LHC can be drastically reduced. We take possible `worst case' scenarios where combinations of the stop, squark and gluino masses are degenerate with the mass of the lightest SUSY particle. To accurately derive limits in the model, care must be taken when describing QCD radiation and we examine this in detail. Lower mass bounds are then produced by considering all the 7 TeV hadronic SUSY and monojet searches. The evolution of the limits as the mass splitting is varied is also presented.

This document reports data relevant to cost-benefit evaluation of noise limits for Navy shipboard compartments. It relates noise effects, determined from subjective responses of personnel, to shipboard sound levels. It provides a procedure for determining noise-limit goals based on subjective noise effects, and proposes such goals for various types of compartments. Sound level data of existing ships are presented for estimating the amount of noise control required to meet present or proposed noise limits.

In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I have noticed one of my coworkers, a fellow senior software engineer, often interrupts people during their meetings with his comments and thoughts. While I'm not against voicing opinions during a meeting, he does it so often that he takes over meetings. Some of his points are off-topic. He'll cut off the presenter or another colleague (who displayed good etiquette) mid-sentence, not letting them finish their thought and derailing the flow of the meeting. In our last meeting I tried to quickly respond to his interjections rather than let him finish so we can keep the meeting moving. I thought he would take the hint to think a little more before interrupting. Ineffective so far. I think next time I will recommend that all questions and concerns be held to the end so we can get through all the meaningful content before letting him speak. I have no problems struggling through the workday, but I have problems not falling into work in my free time. I have a lot of friends, a lot of hobbies, I'm definitely not bored outside of work. But still I always have this inner desire to open and read the workchat when I have a free minute, or finish an interesting feature in the evening instead of reading an interesting book. I can't say it makes me unhappy in some way or affects my private life - I still will go and see a friend if I'm invited and still will attend my yoga class on a normal schedule - but this \"\"desire\"\" distracts me sometimes and that's not normal either. Data collected by the GEO600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null results, placing new upper limits on the strength of the pulsar's gravitational wave emission. A model emission mechanism is used to interpret the limits as a constraint on the pulsar's equatorial ellipticity.
