The operation and implementation of the aircraft integrated data system AIDS are described. The system is described as an engineering tool with strong emphasis on analysis of recorded information. The AIDS is primarily directed to the monitoring of parameters related to: the safety of the flight; the performance of the aircraft; the performance of the flight guidance system; and the performance and condition of the engines. The system provide short term trend analysis on a trend chart that is updated by the flight engineer on every flight that lasts more than 4 flight hours. Engine data prints are automatically presented during take-off and in the case of limit excedance, e.g., the print shows an automatically reported impending hotstarts on engine nr. 1. Other significant features are reported.

Results obtained include the definition of a simplified stress test schedule for terrestrial solar cells based on the work performed during the first program year, and the design and fabrication of improved jigs and fixtures for electrical measurement and stress testing. Implementation of these advanced techniques for accelerated stress testing is underway on three solar cell types. In addition, review of the literature on second quadrant phenomena was begun and some preliminary second-quadrant electrical measurements were performed. Results obtained at the first down time for 75 C B-T testing and biased and unbiased T-H pressure cooker testing of type F cells showed little or no degradation in electrical parameters. Significant physical effects (large solder bubbles) were noted for type F cells subjected to the pressure cooker stress test.

This handbook is directed toward reliability engineers who need to be familiar with the mathematical-probabilistic-statistical techniques for predicting the reliability of various configurations of hardware. The material in standard textbooks is not repeated here; the important points are summarized, and references are given to the standard works.

The purpose of this thesis was to test the validity of the hypothesis is that the civilian service industry does a better job maintaining facilities and utility systems than the Air Force civil engineering community. The researcher looked at several sectors of the US service industry and compared their preventive maintenance programs to the Air Force Recurring Work Program (RWP). The researcher reviewed contemporary Air Force and civilian literature on preventive maintenance (PM), performed case studies on two civilian maintenance departments, and conducted personal interviews with military and civilian maintenance managers. This data were collected to compare the RWP with civilian PM programs and determine if specific practices were used in the civilian programs that improve the RWP. Analysis of the results of the study indicated that the hypothesis was not entirely correct; the Air Force RWP was found to be one of the most comprehensive maintenance management systems studied. Since the Shuttle Challenger accident in 1986, communities across NASA have been developing and extensively using quantitative reliability and risk assessment methods in their decision making process. This paper discusses several reliability engineering applications that NASA has used over the year to support the design, development, and operation of critical space flight hardware. Specifically, the paper discusses several reliability engineering applications used by NASA in areas such as risk management, inspection policies, components upgrades, reliability growth, integrated failure analysis, and physics based probabilistic engineering analysis. In each of these areas, the paper provides a brief discussion of a case study to demonstrate the value added and the criticality of reliability engineering in supporting NASA project and program decisions to fly safely. Examples of these case studies discussed are reliability based life limit extension of Shuttle Space Main Engine (SSME) hardware, Reliability based inspection policies for Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) turbine disc, probabilistic structural engineering analysis for reliability prediction of the SSME alternate turbo-pump development, impact of ET foam reliability on the Space Shuttle System risk, and reliability based Space Shuttle upgrade for safety. Special attention is given in this paper to the physics based probabilistic engineering analysis applications and their critical role in evaluating the reliability of NASA development hardware including their potential use in a research and technology development environment.

Reliability engineering practices are presented from two primary perspectives: part reliability engineering and system reliability engineering. Unlike many reliability documents, this document establishes a clear distinction between the tools and terminology which are associated with each perspective. The context is oriented toward mechanical reliability applications within reliability engineering. Such topics as: (1) the mechanisms of mechanical failure, (2) mechanical failure theories, (3) part failure data evaluation, (4) system failure data evaluation and (5) failure mode evaluation tools for systems are discussed.

Research on using Bayesian statistical methods and on probabilistic modeling of failure processes is described. Emphasis is on developing mathematical models for describing the growth of surface and penny shaped cracks in structural materials and on assessing the integrity of software via a new model for software. Initial work on a paradigm for information fusion is discussed and issues such as sensor reliability, sensor sabotage, adversarial sensors and sensor parleying are introduced.

The "RAMCAD" workshop summarized in this document reviewed the prospects for integrating reliability and maintainability into undergraduate engineering curricula. RAMCAD stands for Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability in Computer-Aided Design. The workshop was sponsored by Air Force human resources departments and attended by a cross-section of university faculty members, industrial organizations, and other Air Force organizations. The paper briefly describes the goals and organizational format for the workshop and then provides synopses of participants' presentations and panel discussion. A final section offering conclusions observes that because academic and government participants disagree as to the best approach for integrating reliability and maintainability into the engineering curriculum, and due to the complexity of the issues, none of the suggestions discussed at the workshop promise to be effective in the near term though they may have significant impact by the turn of the century. Handling, identifying, and correcting faults are significant concerns for the software manager because (1) the presence of faults in the operational software can put human life and mission success at risk in a safety critical application and (2) the entire software reliability process is expensive. Designing an effective Software Reliability Engineering (SRE) process is one method to increase reliability and reduce costs. This thesis describes a process that is being implemented at Marine Corps Tactical System Support Activity (MCTSSA), using the Schneidewind Reliability Model and the SRE process described in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Recommended Practice in Software Reliability. In addition to applying thc SRE process to single node systems, its applicability to multi-node LAN-based distributed systems is explored. Each of the SRE steps is discussed, with practical examples provided, as they would apply to a testing facility. Special attention is directed to data collection methodologies and the application of model results. In addition, a handbook and training plan are provided for use by MCTSSA during the transition to the SRE process.

Objectives were listed for four areas: engineering science, reliability physics, module development, and module performance and failure analysis. The engineering science efforts are to develop module design requirements for large-scale photovoltaic (PV) applications and to develop generic module and array design and construction technology to meet the needed performance, safety, reliability, and system interfaces. The reliability physics effort is to develop the technology for 30-year life modules. The module development efforts are to transfer new technology to PV manufacturers and their products, and to evaluate these advanced modules. The module performance and failure analysis efforts are to determine PV module performance, to identify needed development, and to assess suitability for large-scale use.
