Newsletter preparation is discussed from the standpoint of purpose, information gathering, writing techniques, format, production, and the mailing list. A Suggested Programmed Learning Manual is offered, and the use of the manual in extension worker training is discussed. An experiment was conducted to investigate three topics of current interest in education: critical thinking, programed instruction, and aptitude-treatment interaction. Thirty college students and 31 ninth graders with extreme discrepancies between their verbal and quantitative aptitude scores were taught eight principles of class reasoning by random assignment to one of two versions of a programed instruction unit. One version contained verbal examples and scientific terminology; the other substituted letter symbols for the scientific words. It was hypothesized that if adaptation of instruction to individual differences is an efficacious practice, then students who were highly verbal would learn better from the verbal program version and students with low verbal aptitude would benefit from the symbolic version. Although there was a slight tendency in the hypothesized direction, in no instance was the interaction between program version and discrepancy type significant at the .05 level. However, it was demonstrated that class reasoning principles can be taught by means of a relatively short instructional program and that such instruction will transfer to understanding of conditional reasoning principles. STEP SIZE, ITEM DIFFICULTY, AND PERSONALITY VARIABLES WERE CONSIDERED BEFORE HYPOTHESIZING THAT STUDENTS OF EQUAL ABILITY WHO ARE STRONGLY MOTIVATED TO ACHIEVE WILL PREFER MORE DIFFICULT TEACHING FRAMES THAN STUDENTS WITH A STRONG "FEAR OF FAILURE." MEASURES OF ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION AND HOSTILE PRESS (MOTIVATION THROUGH FEAR OF FAILURE) WERE USED TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF PROGRAM DIFFICULTY, DEFINED AS ERROR RATE, ON ACHIEVEMENT. GRADE 8 STUDENTS WERE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO 6 TREATMENTS TO LEARN SET THEORY FROM LINEAR PROGRAMS, HALF WITH CONSTRUCTED RESPONSES. SELF-PACING WAS ALLOWED. SCORES ON PRE-AND POST-TESTS OF ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTITUDE WERE COMPARED BY RIGOROUS SIGNIFICANCE TESTS, GIVING CONSIDERABLE IMPORT TO THESE CONCLUSIONS. STUDENTS HIGH ON HOSTILE PRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION WERE HIGH ACHIEVERS. 43ERIC ED061924: Self-Programmed Control: A New Approach To Learning.

This paper introduces a program for dealing with two affective detractors from learning: (1) a negative attitude toward school, and (2) personal problems. The program consists of three basic interacting components: (1) Self Programmed Control Technique Series--a method giving persons greater control over involuntary personality traits; (2) Psycho-Cybernetics--a guide to life; and (3) Shortcut Learning Techniques--a means of allowing students to experience immediate learning reinforcement. In a trial use at East Los Angeles College, the program has shown that attitudes toward school have been modified positively as indicated by a 250% increase in Brown-Holtzman scores and that the occurrence of personal problems have dimished as indicated by a drop in Willoughby scores from the 72nd to the 38th percentile. Also the results of an anonymous questionnaire given to 236 students revealed that the number of students having excessive behavior in certain problem areas, such as smoking, drinking, and drug use, was lessened at the program's end. Actual improvement in grades and number of units completed were found to correlate with the affective changes. The ease of implementing the program and various ways of inexpensively incorporating it into a school's curriculum are also discussed. (AL)

44Laboratory Calculations: A Programmed Learning Text

This paper introduces a program for dealing with two affective detractors from learning: (1) a negative attitude toward school, and (2) personal problems. The program consists of three basic interacting components: (1) Self Programmed Control Technique Series--a method giving persons greater control over involuntary personality traits; (2) Psycho-Cybernetics--a guide to life; and (3) Shortcut Learning Techniques--a means of allowing students to experience immediate learning reinforcement. In a trial use at East Los Angeles College, the program has shown that attitudes toward school have been modified positively as indicated by a 250% increase in Brown-Holtzman scores and that the occurrence of personal problems have dimished as indicated by a drop in Willoughby scores from the 72nd to the 38th percentile. Also the results of an anonymous questionnaire given to 236 students revealed that the number of students having excessive behavior in certain problem areas, such as smoking, drinking, and drug use, was lessened at the program's end. Actual improvement in grades and number of units completed were found to correlate with the affective changes. The ease of implementing the program and various ways of inexpensively incorporating it into a school's curriculum are also discussed. (AL)
