This specification defines the objectives, criteria, and configuration, and establishes the requirements for performance, design, test and qualification of the starting subsystem (SS) for the prototype model supersonic transport airplane. Differences between the prototype and production airplanes are described. The SS provides for starting and windmill braking of the engine, drives the accessory drive subsystem (ADS) and its attached accessories in the engine disconnect mode, and supplies ground source or engine bleed air to the environmental control subsystem (ECS).

The MAPSE is the foundation upon which an APSE is built and will provide comprehensive support throughout the design, development and maintenance of Ada software. This specification establishes the requirements for the Application Software Program of the IDAMST System. This program, the Executive Software and the EHARS Software are the segments of the Operational Flight Program (OFP). The paragraphs below describe the IDAMST software specifications for the Application Software. This computer program together with the Executive will be executed in the IDAMST avionics processors for control and integration of the avionics system elements to satisfy mission requirements. This software contains a top level control structure and lower level controller/calculator modules. The control system includes a master sequencer, a request processor, a configurator and a subsystem status monitor. The lower level modules are organized into Operational Sequencers (OPS), Specialist Functions (SPEC), Display Processes (DISP) and Equipment Processes (EQUIP).

This specification establishes the requirements for performance, design, test, and qualification of a computer program identified as Operational Flight Program (OFP), Executive Software for the Integrated Digital Avionics for the Medium STOL Transport (IDAMST). The IDAMST Executive Software Systems provides the system software services for the application software. It has been divided into three major functions denoted as Master Executive, Local Executive and Monitor Executive Functions. These functions provide services for the execution of real-time applications, data bus management, system control, common data utilization and Remote Terminals communication.

This dissertation deals with two related problems: development of a methodology for achieving memory and computation efficiency of computer programs, and the use of this methodology in very high-level programming and associated automatic program generators. Computer efficiency of programs has many aspects. Usually additional memory saves computation by avoiding the need to recompute certain variables. Our emphasis has been on reducing memory use by variables sharing memory space, without requiring recomputation. It will be shown that this also reduces computation overhead. The most significant savings are due to sharing memory in iterative steps. This is the focus of the reported research.

This specification establishes the requirements for performance, design, test, and qualification of a set of computer program modules identified as the Kernel Ada Programming Support Environment (KAPSE) of the Ada Integrated Environment. The KAPSE provides several facilities to the Ada Programming Support Environment, which can be grouped into the following five Computer Program Configuration Items: (1) SIMPCOMP - Database Operations on Simple and Composite Objects; (2) ACCECAT - Access Control and Categorization of Database Objects, and the Manipulation of User-Defined Attributes; (3) MULTPROG - Invocation of and Communication Between Multiple Ada Programs, plus Multi-User and Multi-KAPSE Support and Synchronization; (4) HISTARCH - Configuration and System Management, with History, Archiving, Backup, and Recovery; and (5) RTS - Run-Time Support for the Execution of Ada Programs, including Language-Defined Input/Output Packages. Following the November 2006 launch of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F17 spacecraft, work was begun at the University of Texas at Dallas on the development of ground software for the routine production of geophysical data records from the F 17 SSIES-3 instrument package data that is provided to UTD by the scientists at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The SSIES-3 sensors include the Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA), the Drift Meter (OM), the Scintillation Meter (SM), the Electron Sensor (ES), and the Plasma Plate CPP). The primary accomplishment this year was the refinement of the integrated software package used to routinely convert the raw data to time-tagged geophysical parameters. A basic production level software package has been created that processes the RPA, DM, SM, and ES sensor data. The current version of this software was delivered to AFRL for implementation there. An investigation of problems with density measurements produced by the Plasma Plate has led to that sensor being disabled until ionospheric conditions change. While the RPA algorithm is functioning well, it is expected, based on past experience, that as larger volumes of data are processed further refinement will be required.

A key decision in the development of high assurance software is that of choosing a formal methods tool. This paper describes a methodology to select a formal methods tool for use in the development of high assurance software. Some of the factors that make a tool suitable to the task can be evaluated with a desk check, while others can only be appreciated by hands on testing. We describe the application of our methodology to a broad set of currently available formal methods tools, including a hands-on evaluation of one of the tools. The impact of the tools on the project development is also discussed.

An experimental evaluation of two advanced technology combustor concepts was conducted to evolve and assess their capability for operation on broadened properties fuels. The concepts were based on the results of Phase I of the Broad Specification Fuel Combustor Technology Program which indicated that combustors with variable geometry or staged combustion zones had a flexibility of operation that could facilitate operation' on these fuels. Emphasis in defining these concepts included the use of single pipe as opposed to duplex or staged fuels systems to avoid the risk of coking associated with the reduction in thermal stability expected in broadened properties fuels. The first concept was a variable geometry combustor in which the airflow into the primary zone could be altered through valves on the front while the second was an outgrowth of the staged Vorbix combustor, evolved under the NASA/P&W ECCP and EEE programs, incorporating simplified fuel and air introduction. The results of the investigation, which involved the use of Experimental Referee Broad Specification (ERBS) fuel, indicated that in the form initially conceived, both of these combustor concepts were deficient in performance relative to many of the program goals for performance emissions. However, variations of both combustors were evaluated that incorporated features to simulate conceptual enhancement to demonstrate the long range potential of the combustor. The interim report details the process followed in the development by the University of Missouri of 20 module specifications for a competency based training program to prepare curriculum consultants for educational programs serving handicapped children. Major project goals are said to include the systematic identification of competencies, the design of instructional modules, and the packaging of modules in a form to facilitate use by other training institutions. This Structural Test Requirements Program is designed to provide the necessary ground test requirements to support the overall HSIP objectives. The Structural Test Requirements portion of the HSIP covers the ground tests which are required during the design development and qualification of rotary-wing / VTOL aircraft. The structural test requirements specification addresses composite and metallic components. Through a comprehensive survey of existing specifications and related documents for structural testing of rotary-wing/VTOL aircraft, key test technology elements such as static, fatigue, durability and damage tolerance have been assessed for suitability to future aircraft systems, and evaluated for applicability into the test requirements specification. In cases where no adequate test requirements exist, this program has developed those requirements. A draft test specification was developed and presented to various representatives of the helicopter industry and government agencies at a Government/Industry Forum. Comments received from the forum participants were evaluated and incorporated, if appropriate, into a final revised specification.

This volume describes the subprogram designated as Executive which has the abbreviation EX in the program listing (Volume XII). Historically, the label Main Program has been given to that primary software routine that encompasses the main body of program calculation and requires a large amount of execution time. The interrupt routine is one that temporarily preempts execution of the Main Program in order to initiate a subroutine of time dependent nature. Here, however, the time dependent and sequential nature of the Submarine OMEGA software has boosted the interrupt routine to eminence and reduced Main Program to the state of marking time, or idling. Main Program will initiate the executive routine at start-up and then will continually check core until interrupted.

This specification describes the two computer programs which accomplish the ground readiness testing of the IDAMST system. The functional performance requirements design constraints and standards to be used in developing the IDAMST ground test and the computer programs are specified. These computer programs will be executed in the IDAMST core processors prior to a mission in order to accomplish the operational readiness testing of the IDAMST core elements and various IDAMST subsystems.

This document contains the computer program performance specification CPPS for the system controller (SC) unit which is part of Integrated Electronic Warfare System (IEWS). This system is described with emphasis on the relation between the SC and various units. Functional descriptions of all SC computer operations are provided which include all input, processing, and output requirements. The SC computer program shall provide IEWS with the capability to evaluate emitter signal parameters which have been characterized by the signal sorter, assess the threat situation and initiate appropriate defensive responses. In addition, this computer program shall monitor the status of several system units and supply control signals to adapt to various operating conditions. The computer program shall also supply various data for display and instrumentation purposes. The executive shall control the real time operation of the computer program. It shall schedule the execution of overlapping programs, handle all input/output operations, monitor program execution and take corrective action as required to maintain acceptable program execution.

An experimental evaluation was conducted to assess the impact of the use of broadened properties fuels on combustor design concepts. Emphasis was placed on establishing the viability of design modifications to current combustor concepts and the use of advanced technology concepts to facilitate operation on Experimental Referee Broad Specification (ERBS) fuel while meeting exhaust emissions and performance specifications and maintaining acceptable durability. Three different combustor concepts, representative of progressively more aggressive technology levels, were evaluated. When operated on ERBS rather than Jet A fuel, a single stage combustor typical of that in the most recent versions of the JT9D-7 engine was found to produce excess carbon monoxide emissions at idle and elevated liner temperatures at high power levels that were projected to reduced liner life by 13 percent. The introduction of improved component technology, such as refined fuel injectors and advanced liner cooling concepts were shown to have the potential of enhancing the fuel flexibility of the single stage combustor.

The CLASFYT program is described in detail. The program produces a one-channel universal-formatted classification file. Trajectory coefficients and a composite set of tolerance values are calculated from five acquisitions of radiance values in each of the training fields corresponding to up to ten agricultural products. These coefficients and tolerance values are used to classify each pixel in the test field of the same segment to be the same agricultural product as one of the training fields, none of the products or a screened pixel.

An assessment is made of the results of Phase 1 screening testing of current and advanced combustion system concepts using several broadened-properties fuels. The severity of each of several fuels-properties effects on combustor performance or liner life is discussed, as well as design techniques with the potential to offset these adverse effects. The selection of concepts to be pursued in Phase 2 refinement testing is described. This selection takes into account the relative costs and complexities of the concepts, the current outlook on pollutant emissions control, and practical operational problems.

The use of broad specification fuels in aircraft turbine engine combustion systems was examined. Three different combustor design concepts were evaluated for their ability to use broad specification fuels while meeting several specific emissions, performance, and durability goals. These combustor concepts covered a range from those having limited complexity and relatively low technical risk to those having high potential for achieving all of the program goals at the expense of increased technical risk.

The software modules which comprise the IGDS/TRAP Interface Program are described. A hierarchical input processing output (HIPO) chart for each user command is given. The description consists of: (1) function of the user command; (2) calling sequence; (3) moduls which call this use command; (4) modules called by this user command; (5) IGDS commands used by this user command; and (6) local usage of global registers. Each HIPO contains the principal functions performed within the module. Also included with each function are a list of the inputs which may be required to perform the function and a list of the outputs which may be created as a result of performing the function.

Activities this year have been largely devoted to the adaptation of the ground software to accommodate the very low levels of solar activity, to continued examination of the robustness of the procedures to recover for single event upsets, and to the analysis and post-mortem associated with a malfunction of the ion drift meter on the F17 spacecraft. The low levels of solar activity have led to a significantly contracted ionosphere that resides predominantly below the satellite altitude. Such a condition leads to the dominance of H+ in regions where O+ might be expected to be the major ion. This condition has required the re-programming of some of the logic associated with ground software processing for the retarding potential analyzer (RPA) and the ion drift meter. Extensive analysis of the F17 drift meter data, and the physical configuration of the sensor, has been undertaken following a malfunction that rendered the instrument inoperable. During this reporting period, various failure modes were investigated and compared with the temporal history of the instrument performance. The most likely failure mode has been identified and a detailed analysis has been provided to AFRL.

The purpose of this document is to provide a technical description of the components of the recommended near-term DMA modern programming environment (MPE). This document includes descriptions of the DMA MPE tool bearing host (TBH) and software life cycle tool support environment for the near-term MPE configuration. The tools described are the one which best satisfied the requirements and constraints of the DMA environment at the time this document was produced. The implementation of this system should have the recommended tools or equivalent tools which satisfy the criteria and constraints of the DMA MPE. Only the FORTRAN and COBOL languages are addressed in this document.

In order for a submarine to successfully determine its current position from the phase information received, it must know the phase velocity of the incoming wave along the path, and the path length. To obtain a more accurate estimate of submarine position, one must consider a number of effects (magnetic, day/night (diurnal), ground conductivity, and variations in radius of the earth) that cause position to deviate from that calculated using constant velocity over an assumed perfect sphere. The OMEGA Navigation System is based on measurement of the phase of several transmitters operating in the 10-14 kHz electromagnetic spectrum. It has been established that the 8 proposed OMEGA transmitters will cover the earth with signal levels adequate to permit that phase measurement. It is also accepted that signals in this spectrum propagate through a waveguide made up of two concentric spheres--one sphere the earth, the other the ionosphere. Under ideal conditions a simple phase measurement would suffice to locate a receiving station precisely. However, the walls of the waveguide are not perfect and are affected by several parameters, specifically the effect of the sun on the ionosphere; earth's magnetic field; ground conductivity, and others. These imperfections in the waveguide walls cause changes in the propagation of the electromagnetic signal, the phase velocity, which reduce the accuracy of the phase measurement.

A FORTRAN II computer program is described which evaluates the equations for the explosion induced whipping motions of ships. A shortened version of the program is also described. This version determines just the still water vibration frequencies and mode shapes of a ship, as these are often of interest in circumstances other than explosion loading.

270 BARRELS OF SPECIFICATION JP-4 jet fuel were produced by hydrorefining 890 barrels of raw Geokinetics shale oil under severe operating conditions in a continuous process development unit. On a once thru basis the yield of JP-4 off the hydrotreater was about 35 volume % of the feed. Preliminary estimates of plant investments and economics indicate that for the combination severe hydrorefining and hydrocracking, an 85 volume % yield can be attained based on total refinery energy input. Capital investments and manufacturing costs do not appear to be excessive for a shale oil refinery. (Author)

This document provides the functional specification of the Terminal-To-Host Protocol (THP) as used in the AUTODIN II packet switched Network. THP provides the user (human or process) interface into the AUTODIN II protocol structure. Through a THP Command Language (TCL), a user requests and controls Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) services, and THP data packaging and Network Virtual Terminal (NVT) services. The NVT service will permit limited data exchange between normally incompatible terminals and/or host processes. This document also contains many examples of the THP design and implementation in the AUTODIN II MCCU.

The Combat Training Centers (CTCs) have two missions: (1) Provide tough, realistic combined arms training in which the unit to be trained must exercise all of the battlefield operating systems (BOSs) in accordance with AirLand battle doctrine; and (2) Provide a data source for training, doctrine, organization and equipment improvement. The BCTP is considered to be a CTC, specializing in training exercises for command staff training at the Brigade, Division and Corps levels. These training exercises, known as Warfighter Exercises (WFXs), and the system that supports them, are described extensively in supporting reports, described in the references section of this report. The purpose of this document is to describe how the data from rotations at the BCTP will be integrated into the databases at the CTC Archive at ARI-POM.

This report is a computer program development specification for the Surface Wave Analysis System (SWANS). Included in the Appendix are sections on the generation of synthetic seismograms, and linear inversion theory in geophysics, and frequency variable filters.

We briefly present Java PathExplorer (JPAX), a tool developed at NASA Ames for monitoring the execution of Java programs. JPAX can be used not only during program testing to reveal subtle errors, but also can be applied during operation to survey safety critical systems. The tool facilitates automated instrumentation of a program in order to properly observe its execution. The instrumentation can be either at the bytecode level or at the source level when the source code is available. JPaX is an instance of a more general project, called PathExplorer (PAX), which is a basis for experiments rather than a fixed system, capable of monitoring various programming languages and experimenting with other logics and analysis techniques

The Yamabico Research Group at the Naval Postgraduate School is actively pursuing improvements in design and implementation of applications for it's family of autonomous mobile robots. This paper describes a new high level language for controlling the Yamabico- 11, surnamed OOPS-MML (Object-Oriented Program Specification for a Mobile robot Motion control Language). Conceptual goals included a user friendly, high level interface coupled with an abstract, efficient and compartmentalized architecture to employ a path tracking and motion control application developed at NPS. The result is a robust and flexible robot control system that is intended to be implemented and employed onboard the Yamabico- 11.

Applicable data was categorized and processed according to vehicle usage and trip parameters with consideration of payload (cargo, people, size) and driving cycles. A mission that maximizes the fuel potential savings for the total 1985 vehicle fleet was selected. Mission requirements that have a bearing on conventional and hybrid vehicle performance and characteristics were identified and formulated and a reference ICE vehicle was selected that meets or exceeds all requirements while maintaining within applicable constraints. Specifications for vehicle performance were established based on mission requirements, mission related vehicle characteristics, and fuel consumption.

The AMPS Program Specification delineates the AMPS Program requirements consistent with the resources defined in the AMPS Project Plan. All subsidiary specifications and requirements shall conform to the requirements presented. The requirements hierarchy for the AMPS program is illustrated. A brief description of each of the requirements documents and their intended use is provided.
